Police forces have also searched the offices of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Madrid as part of an ongoing inquiry into “possible systemic corruption” within the nation’s refereeing committee. Barca had already been pulled into that case when judge Joaquin Aguirre Lopez claimed earlier in the September that the Catalan giants may have benefited from corrupt officiating.

DID YOU KNOW?

Prosecutors filed a complaint against Barcelona back in March regarding payments of more than €7.3 million that were paid to firms owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira – the former vice-president of the RFEF refereeing committee – over the course of a 17-year period.

Barca have maintained their innocence throughout, claiming to have paid an external consultant for “technical reports related to professional refereeing” – which they consider to be common practice. Aguirre said in early September that no evidence had been found so far of Negreira paying referees to influence matches, but the case has now taken another twist.

Reyna starts match on bench, againSubbed on in 78th minuteDortmund win 1-0Getty WHAT HAPPENED?

Felix Nmecha's lovely first-time strike stole the headlines as Borussia Dortmund earned their first win of the Champions League group stage, with a brilliant three points on the road against Newcastle. The German international scored the lone goal of the match on a rainy Tuesday evening.

Dortmund shotstopper Gregor Kobel may deserve the praise on the night, though, as he made an astonishing save in the 57th minute to deny striker Callum Wilson. The England international replaced an injured Alexander Isak just 17 minutes into the match, but never found his groove.

It's an incredibly important three points earned for Terzic's side, but they leave the Toon's ground knowing they were lucky to get by without conceding. Caught flat in the attack more often than not, the Black and Yellow lacked a connecting presence from their midfield to attack. It's time to give Reyna that connecting role, with his first start of the season.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Having just returned from injury towards late September, Reyna made his first Dortmund appearance of the season on October 7, but has yet to start a match for his club this season. German international and club legend, 34-year-old Marco Reus, has been occupying the 10 role for Terzic's side, but the Bundesliga legend simply cannot keep up with these performances week-in and week-out.

It's time Dortmund give Reyna, who has provided a spark off the bench for them of late, a starting role to see what he can do. The Black and Yellow have scraped by with narrow victories of late, with this being their second-consecutive 1-0 win in all competitions. Terzic's side, however, now sit second in their UCL group, which is an excellent showing in this year's so-called Group of Death.

With this being the halfway point of the group stages, there's no doubt that the competition is set to heat up.

Getty ImagesUSMNT IMPACT

Lert's be honest, if there was a match to start Reyna in, it was Tuesday's tie against Newcastle. He looked brilliant for the USMNT in their friendlies against both Germany and Ghana, and then came off the bench on the weekend to provide an incredible spark for the Bundesliga side in a narrow 1-0 victory. His benching has to be disappointing for Berhalter and the USMNT, because they need Reyna to get consistent minutes at this level. There is nothing better than a UCL night under the lights for a player to find himself again.

For Reyna, it's all about fighting for a starting role now. He needs to get going, and fast, as the USMNT are next back in action on November 16 in a clash vs Trinidad & Tobago.

The USWNT legend – and now retired NWSL champion – joined the CBS Sports GOLAZO show to talk about her recent victory with Gotham FC.

Krieger played all 90 minutes in the final, and at 39-years-old in her final season, made the NWSL Best XI for her incredible campaign. It was her final career games prior to retirement, and her storied career – which included two World Cup wins – came to an end in historic fashion.

WHAT KRIEGER SAID

On 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Esther Gonzalez's game-winning header…

"So she's doing it in training. And then we're like, alright, let's just apply this to the game and we're good. And it actually we executed it perfectly. And so that was my run. I turned around. And she's she's always been there and so I couldn't believe it that it actually works. I mean, I couldn't believe it, but it worked. And we were so we were so happy in that moment. And it we needed that goal and that exact moment and it was amazing."

For Krieger, though, it was about ending her storied career on the best note possible – and everyone, from teammates to her head coach Juan Carlos Amoros, were in onit.

"I mean, incredible I can't even put into words right? A player dreams of this ending to their career and not many get it this way. So I know I have to be super grateful and I feel super lucky that this is the way it's turned out because it's not every day that you gets to enjoy this moment exactly the way that you envision it. And so, obviously, the playoffs we knew were going to be very difficult. We squeaked in, you know, in that last game at my retirement game, that's when we found out and so I was so ecstatic to be able to have the opportunity to play at least three more games. And so my coach was saying this, at the end of every huddle, he was saying, 'this is not Ali Krieger’s last game.'

"That was like the whole theme of the playoffs. And so I think the team really rallied behind me they wanted to not only win for themselves and for our team, but for me, and I thought that that was so incredible, and I was just so motivated that much more to want to give everything because they were given everything for me. And that was such a good feeling as the leader and the captain to really carry this this team and this organization to the top."

CBS Sports' show host, Kate Abdo, lifted the curtains on Carragher's spat with Messi and revealed that the Argentine declined to make a cameo appearance as he did not want to share screen space with the former Liverpool midfielder, even after he picked the 2022 World Cup winner over Cristiano Ronaldo and hailed him as the greatest of all time. Abdo then also reminded Carragher that Messi had earlier called him 'a donkey' after the pundit criticised the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner for choosing to join Paris Saint-Germain, whereas, Ronaldo chose to ignore him in the same show during a Champions League game while the Portuguese star was at Manchester United.

Nonetheless, Messi's recent impact on Inter Miami and American football, notably leading his team to the US Open Cup finals and securing their first-ever Leagues Cup victory, would likely make CBS more interested in having Messi appear on their broadcast.

Real Madrid's ideal Jude Bellingham back-up – or midfield partner? Ex-Man City wonderkid Brahim Diaz finally earning his shot at the Bernabeu big time

The former AC Milan loanee is finally starting to reach his potential in the Spanish capital after being shipped out to Italy for three seasons

It was like Jude Bellingham's celebration, only slightly awkward. Brahim Diaz had just made a mockery of the RB Leipzig defence, weaving past three defenders before curling an audacious attempt into the top corner. He careened off in joy, and mimicked Bellingham's signature post-goal pose, standing in front of the traveling Real Madrid support, arms spread, a showman accepting his adulation. Bellingham was missing that night, but Real had their ideal replacement.

When Bellingham doesn't play, Real Madrid should really collapse. After all, a knock to the English midfielder means Los Blancos have to make do without their top scorer, top provider of assists, and most apparent attacking threat. This team doesn't entirely revolve around Bellingham, but it comes pretty close.

It is a concern, then, that the former Borussia Dortmund star is set to miss at least two more weeks after spraining his ankle against Girona. But Madrid have a viable backup in a player who, less than six months ago, didn't seem to have a future at the club. Diaz, part promising loanee, part exile, has returned from a successful spell at AC Milan.

And after spending three years away, the attacking midfielder has finally announced himself to the Santiago Bernabeu – serving as an ideal backup to one of the world's best. Madrid have played six games without Bellingham and Diaz has started all six, scoring four goals and assisting another. Carlo Ancelotti's men have won all of them.

So, Madrid are left with a perfect second option, a match-winner too good to be a backup, yet not so vital that he can crack the starting XI every week. For Diaz, it's the culmination of a four-year journey, one that started with a lauded move to the Spanish capital, and has now reached its conclusion with a top prospect finally starting to realise his potential.

GettyA promising signing for Man City

Man City thought they had landed the next David Silva. A scouting mission to Spain found Diaz, then 16 years old. Had another deal, four years before, gone through, though, Diaz would not have been available at any price. Barcelona reportedly had everything sewn up with Brahim, then 12, in 2011. Diaz had expressed his desire to join the famous La Masia academy. His father had verbally accepted the agreement, having worked in conjunction with the same scout who lured Ansu Fati to Catalonia.

But the Malaga ownership stepped in, made an even more enticing offer to Diaz's father, and kept the playmaker at the club. Since he had not yet turned 16, and was therefore unable to sign a professional contract, the Blaugrana couldn't buy him. Four years later, Man City sorted the agreement that Barca never could.

Diaz's time in Manchester was admittedly mixed. He impressed for City's youth team, playing a vital role for an U23 side that finished second in the youth Premier League. There was scattered talk in the City academy that they had their Silva replacement wrapped up. Still, with the actual Silva still strutting his stuff in Manchester, and Kevin de Bruyne occupying his preferred position, Diaz sought a move. He refused to sign a contract extension, and made it clear that he wanted a fresh start. Madrid were the first to act, securing the 19-year-old's signature for £15 million ($19m)in January 2019 – a good deal for City considering Diaz could leave for nothing the following June.

Despite his immense promise, Diaz made just nine appearances for Pep Guardiola's side, scoring twice and never completing a full 90 minutes.

AdvertisementGettyMadrid, AC Milan and back again

If City's side was difficult to break into, then Madrid's looked impossible. Los Blancos didn't play with a No.10 at the time of Diaz's arrival, while the emergence of Vinicius Jr on the left, and staying power of Luka Modric in the middle meant that the teenager struggled for minutes. He sat on the bench for almost 18 months, making 21 appearances in all competitions, accepting brief cameos and the occasional start in games that didn't matter.

Milan noticed his potential, though, and offered Los Blancos €1 million (£866,000/$1.1m) to bring Brahim in on loan. They wanted a buy option, but Real refused. There was a player in there somewhere. And Diaz showed just how good he could be. One year in Milan became three, the attacking midfielder functioning as the central cog in a fluid, expansive system. Finally, Diaz could operate as a sole No.10.

In his first season at the club, he scored four and assisted three in 15 Serie A starts, leading the Rossoneri to a second-placed finish. His level of performance brought more significant financial commitment out of Milan, who paid €6.5m (£5.6m/$7m) to bring Brahim back – this time on a two-year loan deal. It seemed to benefit all parties. Diaz won Serie A in his second year, making 52 league starts across his second and third seasons. Madrid, for their part, received nearly €8m in loan fees for a player they acquired for just over €15m.

GettyStaking his claim in Spain

A return to Madrid had always been the goal. According to , Los Blancos' board were in constant contact with their loanee during his Italian vacation. His father never moved to Italy. Brahim may have loved Milan, but Madrid never strayed from his mind.

Real affirmed their commitment to him with a lucrative contract extension agreed in February 2023 – while Diaz was still playing for Milan. And this summer he returned to the club, more experienced and well-positioned to fight for a spot in the side. Bellingham's arrival, of course, complicated things, but the departure of Karim Benzema left Ancelotti's squad shallow in attack. At the very least, there remained room for Diaz to be an impactful backup.

And he has seized every possible opportunity. Diaz has scored eight and assisted three in 28 appearances this season. He seems an ideal fit in Ancelotti's diamond formation, operating as either a No.10, or on the right side of the manager's split striker formation. Bellingham, Vinicius, Rodrygo – Diaz has made things happen in conjunction with all of them. His €15m price-tag now looks like a steal.

SKYBellingham's perfect backup?

His main remit, though, has been to replace the player who should be irreplaceable. There is no getting near Bellingham – statistically or otherwise. He is too good, too impactful, and too marketable for anyone to step in for. Diaz has not tried to be the new Bellingham.

Instead, he has offered something different. Diaz is an unpredictable, buzzing presence. He drops between the lines, plays on the half turn, and looks for cute angles and tight spaces. He's not powerful as much as sneaky, slithering away from defenders with a series of feints, dips and darts. His goal against Leipzig was a perfect example.

Diaz only needed less than 10 touches, start to finish. He received the ball near the right sideline, spun around one defender, bounced off another, cut inside a third, and curled a shot into the top corner – all without looking at the goal. It was an instinctive moment of brilliance, a fine footballer creating something out of nothing – and providing the pivotal moment in a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Jaedyn Shaw's stock rises, Alex Morgan provides a spark and questions rise about Twila Kilgore – USWNT Winners and Losers from the Gold Cup group stage

The U.S. fell short in the final game of a group stage that provided interim boss Twila Kilgore, and her players, plenty of lessons.

Well, that Mexico loss let the air out of the balloon a bit, didn't it? Prior to it, the U.S. women's national team was riding high on the back of two wins over the Dominican Republic and Argentina. Things were going well – the young stars were firing, the veterans were holding their own.

And then Mexico happened.

2-0 to El Tri, a huge loss for the USWNT, but a historic humbling, one that served as a harsh reminder that this team is still a work in progress. That loss in the third game doesn't erase the good of the first two, but it certainly does overshadow it.

There was plenty of good during the Gold Cup group stage, plenty of moments to look at and find hope in. There was also a decent amount of bad, particularly in that third game. In that Mexico defeat, the U.S. looked a whole lot like the team that limped out of last summer's World Cup and not the one that has been building so diligently to escape it.

The Gold Cup isn't over. The knockout stage is now calling, and the U.S. have a lot of work to do if they want to end this tournament with a trophy in hand.

GOAL takes a look at the USWNT's biggest winners and losers from the Gold Cup group stage…

GettyWINNER: Jaedyn Shaw

The old saying states that if you're good enough, you're old enough. It's been made very, very clear that Shaw is good enough to contribute to this team.

Shaw, still just 19, was the star of the show against Argentina, scoring twice in the 4-0 win. That's now four goals in just even caps for the teenager, who has never shown a single sign of fear despite playing under the USWNT microscope.

Fitting Shaw in isn't easy, though. The U.S. is loaded in the attack with talent and this Gold Cup group is even missing a few players, names like Mallory Swanson, Alyssa Thompson and Catarina Macario who could surely start any given game.

Shaw, though, has proven that she's a player that deserves to be involved. She's too talented right now and her ceiling is too high in the future. Let her use these games to get that extra little bit of experience before the Olympics, when she could be poised for a real breakout.

On form, Shaw has earned that Olympic chance already. If what we've seen so far is any indication, she could be next up in the long line of USWNT stars.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Becky Sauerbrunn

Sauerbrunn will have been the first to raise her hand and acknowledge it. She's made so few during her illustrious USWNT career, which is what made Monday's even more impactful.

"I made a mistake," she said atfter the game. " It's very obvious that it was all on me. I probably should have done anything [other] than what I did.

"As a veteran, you have some rough days at the office and tonight is definitely a rough day. But luckily, you’ll have another day at the office and it’s just what you make out of it."

The 38-year-old defender is currently fighting for one last tournament, one last chance to play on the big stage. With Naomi Girma having already locked down one centerback spot, the question has become who will partner her, with there being several contenders for that job.

Sauerbrunn is one of those contenders, but Monday's performance won't have helped her case. Her lack of pace made Monday a difficult night for her and the USWNT defense. Girma, of course, is a player that can help cover some of that up and Sauebrunn's experience is invaluable. The question is if that'll be enough to keep her in it for the Olympics.

You have to remember that Sauerbrunn wasn't even originally in this squad, too, and was only called in as an injury replacement for Alana Cook. That makes it seem like she faces an uphill fight already, and Monday's performance has made that hill a bit steeper.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Olivia Moultrie

Another young star on the rise, Moultrie is finding her feet with the USWNT.

It's a shame we didn't see any more of her after her brace against the Dominican Republic. She was fantastic in that match, continuing her ascendance even earlier in her career than can be expected. You have to remember that Moultrie was anointed as next up at age 13. Now 18, she's living up to and exceeding the hype.

After that opening-game brace, it felt like this would be a perfect tournament to really toss Moultrie into the deep end. By resting her against Argentina, an understandable choice, she'd be ready to go against Mexico, right? Wrong, unfortunately.

The hope is that we'll see more of Moultrie because she has earned it. The young midfielder is clearly the future, and that future could be coming faster than many are ready for.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Rotation for the sake of it

Twila Kilgore promised rotation, which makes sense. Three games close together for a group in preseason form… it makes sense to move things around.

What doesn't make sense, though, is rotating at the expense of developing young players. There's a time for everything, sure, and Monday night's loss to Mexico really did feel like a time for young players, not veterans.

Veterans are what we got, though. The two centerbacks, Sauerbrunn and Dahlkember, were a combined 78 years old. The first two players off the bench, Morgan and Lynn Williams, were both over 30. Alyssa Naeher started in goal, while Crystal Dunn started at left-back, too.

All of this for a game that, essentially, didn't mean too much. The USWNT had already booked a spot in the knockout stages, largely through the play of their young stars. Those stars need every second available to them if they want to be ready for the Olympics this year and, if the performance fo some of the veterans was any indication, they may be needed as soon as possible.

Why didn't we see more of Shaw and Moultrie? Why did Jenna Nighswonger start just one of the three games? Korbin Albert played plenty, too, and surely took her chance, but why weren't some of the other new faces given a similar opportunity?

It'll be interesting to see how Kilgore balances it all going into the knockouts. There's no more room for error or rotation or rest. Will she place her trust in some of the young guns, for better or worse, or will she hope to ride veterans to a trophy? Whichever we she goes, it'll likely have a pretty big impact on the road to France this summer.
