Arthur backs captain Babar: 'We have to allow him the time to grow'

“It’s not a crime to make mistakes as long as you learn from those mistakes,” said Pakistan’s director of cricket after the side’s underwhelming World Cup campaign

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Nov-2023Babar Azam is still learning as captain, and deserves to be backed. This is what Pakistan’s director of cricket Mickey Arthur said, after wrapping up an underwhelming World Cup campaign with a 93-run loss to England.Pakistan finished with five losses in nine matches and had struggled through the middle of the league stage, losing to India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa all in a row. Babar’s own form wasn’t quite to expectation, given the extremely high standards he often sets in white-ball cricket. He averaged 40 and struck at 82.9, hitting five fifties and making a high score of 74.As a result, Babar’s captaincy has come under significant scrutiny at home. He had been the top-ranked ODI batter, and Pakistan had been the top-ranked ODI side as recently as September. But poor campaigns in both the Asia Cup and World Cup have now changed the outlook on his leadership.Related

“I get behind Babar – he is very, very close to me,” Arthur said after the loss to England. “He’s a young guy that needs to be taken on the journey with. He needs to be shown the ropes. He’s still learning all the time. We know he’s a very, very fine batsman. He learns every day with his captaincy.”Babar has had the ODI reins for over three years now, and at 29 has played international cricket for more than eight years.”He’s growing and we have to allow him the time to grow,” Arthur said. “And in order to do that, you make mistakes. It’s not a crime to make mistakes as long as you learn from those mistakes and as a group, we’ve made a lot of mistakes this World Cup. But if this group grows and learns from it, we’ve got the core of a very, very good side.”In terms of what went wry for Pakistan in this campaign, Arthur made two major observations. The first was that Pakistan only appeared the kind of side that can put up a seriously big score – as teams like India, South Africa, and Australia frequently do – when Fakhar Zaman plays a big innings.”Batting-wise, we have to become a 330-350 team,” he said. “The teams that are doing that and doing that consistently are the teams that are in the semi-final. And I don’t think we’ve done that consistently enough. We do that when Fakhar Zaman comes off and we can’t just be relying on one-on-one player.”The second observation was on the bowling. Naseem Shah’s injury-forced absence, Arthur said, put Pakistan’s attack off kilter. Among those who are seen to have underperformed the most in this Pakistan campaign, is Haris Rauf, who took 16 wickets at 33.31, but went at 6.74 an over.”The one thing we know is that Haris Rauf doesn’t normally bowl with the new ball. When you lose Naseem Shah, you have to find somebody to bowl with a new ball. We’ve been working hard on him with a new ball, and he bowled okay in patches. But when he bowls with an older ball – that’s what he’s used to.”It’s not an excuse. Our bowling equilibrium was out of kilter because Naseem Shah provides the consistency, where it allows Shaheen Shah [Afridi] to attack, and then you can attack with your legspinner and you attack with Haris Rauf. So, the equilibrium was upset but that is no excuse at all because quite frankly we haven’t played well enough.”

Alejandro Garnacho in trouble after driving to Manchester United training in 'illegal car'

Garnacho has been caught by driving a car that is untaxed and therefore not legal to drive. The Argentina international is thought to have arrived at Carrington after head coach Ruben Amorim's departure, with his future seemingly lying away from Old Trafford.

The United Kingdom government's MOT registry shows tax has not been paid on the car having been due all the way back in October. The punishment for such breaches is a possible out of court settlement alongside a fine of £30 with one-and-a-half times the outstanding tax amount. If Garnacho does nothing, the situation could escalate to the point of a criminal offence at the magistrates' court, with the penalty either £1,000 or five times the amount of tax chargeable – whichever is the higher fee.

Alongside fellow outcasts Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, Garnacho has been told he can only use United's training facilities after 5pm, once the rest of the playing squad has departed. There hasn't been much movement in securing outgoing transfers for that quintet, though Garnacho is said to be attracting interest from Premier League sides like Chelsea.

Salt calls IPL auction snub 'confusing': 'I expected to be picked up'

He was expected to be in high demand following a successful debut season with Delhi Capitals and his current England form

Cameron Ponsonby20-Dec-2023Phil Salt has described his IPL omission as “confusing” after he went unsold at the 2024 mini auction.Salt was expected to be in high demand following a successful debut season with Delhi Capitals where he averaged 27.25 with a strike-rate of 163.91. But despite a base price of 1.5 crore, the England opener went unsold.”It was a confusing morning,” Salt said in the moments after he’d scored a second consecutive T20I hundred for England against the West Indies. “I expected to be picked up, having gone there last year and done well and after the year that I’ve had, but these things happen. It’s part of the lottery of an auction, it happens in draft processes as well. There’s a few lads in our dressing room who are going to have a very good Christmas and I’m over the moon for them.Related

“I was a bit confused but it can happen. There’s no bad cricketers on the list at the IPL. It’s one of those things.”England opener had purposely slept in late in order to miss as much of the auction as possible, with his agent giving him texts to update on how things were going. The timing of Salt’s snub is particularly incongruous given his international form which has seen him score back-to-back centuries for England who have won two on the bounce to tie their five-match series against the West Indies at two apiece. Until four days ago, Salt hadn’t scored a professional T20 hundred, now he has made two.”It was probably a little bit of it, subconsciously,” Salt said of whether his IPL snub had motivated his innings of 119 today. “I’m very aware of how lucky I am to be here playing cricket.”I’m playing good cricket, I’m doing what I came out here to do. More importantly than that, the boys have really pulled together and shown what a good team we are. The West Indies are a very good side that we’re playing against so to win back-to-back games and force the decider in a couple of days’ time, I’m chuffed.”Salt’s innings of 119 off off 57 balls in Trinidad was the highest-ever score in T20I by an English player and backed up his effort of 109 not out off 56 on Saturday.Salt had spoken previously of his disappointment at failing to turn starts in an England shirt into big scores, a trait that he has brought to an emphatic close in the last 72 hours.Alongside captain Jos Buttler, the pair has combined for back-to-back hundred run partnerships, with their effort in Trinidad the fastest century stand in England’s history, coming off just 52 balls.”When we’re in the middle, it’s more getting me back in my box,” Salt said of Buttler’s advice whilst the pair were batting together. “It’s either ‘you’re doing really well’ or ‘drop it down a gear’. We’ve had some good conversations away from the game, we’ve enjoyed spending time around each other as a group so we’re going nicely.”England went on to score 267 for 3, their highest ever T20 score and the second highest by a Full Member nation. Salt himself reached his century off 48 balls, muscling 10 sixes along the way.”I’ve worked specifically on hitting sixes over the off-side. I’ve always been good at hitting the sight screen and going over the leg-side. When Jason Holder took the pace off wide and I hit it over the offside, something Jos said to me was ‘teams can’t bowl to you’. That’s an area I’ve been working on for a good while so it’s good to see it’s working.”

Hundred faces MLC clash as 2024 fixtures are announced

Battle for big names set to intensify as rival northern-hemisphere tournaments go head-to-head

Matt Roller23-Jan-2024The Hundred will clash with Major League Cricket (MLC) for the first time in 2024. The two leagues will be in direct competition for the world’s leading men’s players in late July, after narrowly avoiding an overlap last year.MLC, which launched last year and is backed by Indian and American investors, announced last month that its second season will launch on July 4 and conclude “by early August”, with dates and fixtures due to be finalised imminently. The ECB announced the Hundred’s fixture list on Tuesday, with The Oval hosting the opening men’s and women’s matches on July 23.The Hundred will also go up against an England men’s international in 2024, after a dedicated window last year. England’s third Test against West Indies starts on July 26, which will rule those involved out of at least the first week of the Hundred. There will not be a clash for England’s women, who finish a T20I series against New Zealand on July 17.ESPNcricinfo understands that the Hundred is unlikely to clash with the Caribbean Premier League in 2024. The men’s and women’s finals will again be held at Lord’s on August 18 and while CPL dates are yet to be finalised, a source said that it is unlikely to start until the final week of August as things stand. But the clash with MLC will pose a major challenge in terms of availability. Last year, the inaugural MLC final took place two days before the Hundred started and 19 players – including Tim David, Heinrich Klaasen and Sunil Narine – made at least one appearance in both leagues, highlighting the reliance on a similar player pool.Related

The ECB have made clear their concern about the launch of a new lucrative franchise league during the northern hemisphere summer and told centrally-contracted players that they would not be given No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for MLC. Jason Roy was the only Englishman to feature last summer and is expected to return to LA Knight Riders for at least some of the 2024 season. The ICC voted last year to introduce a global limit of four overseas players per team in franchise leagues, which MLC currently exceeds – though the cap only applies to new leagues. Richard Thompson, the ECB’s chair, spoke to the this week about leagues which are “basically international tournaments masquerading as domestic competitions”, with reference to MLC.MLC paid its top earners around US$175,000 (£137,500) in its inaugural season to play a minimum of five games, while the Hundred’s highest men’s salary is £125,000 (US$159,000) for a minimum of eight games. Men’s Hundred salaries have been frozen for the 2024 season, with the ECB currently weighing up the merits of opening the tournament up to private investors from 2025.

AUSTIN, Texas – San Diego FC's Hirving Lozano is relishing his first MLS All-Star experience, though he admits will be odd to face opponents from Liga MX – a league he knows well.

“It’ll be strange to go up against teams from my country, but we have to go out and win,” the Mexican forward said ahead of Wednesday’s match at Q2 Stadium.

While Lionel Messi’s availability remains uncertain, Lozano hopes to share the field with the Argentine star.

“It would be great for all of us – for the league and especially for the fans, who are the most important,” he said.

Lozano sees the All-Star Game as a valuable chance to connect with elite players across MLS.

“It’s a really special experience," he said. "There are a lot of high-level players here. Hopefully, we get the win, and everyone enjoys the game – you can see the quality on both sides, from Liga MX and MLS."

Since arriving this season at expansion club San Diego FC, Lozano has made an immediate impact. With six goals and six assists in just 19 appearances, he’s helped lead the team to the top of the Western Conference.

“I’m really happy with how I’ve adapted,” he said. “I’m enjoying myself, getting to know players from other teams – it’s been a great experience.”

Reflecting on the level of competition in the U.S., Lozano said, “MLS is a league that really emphasizes physicality, speed, and strength. You see a lot of powerful, fast players. It’s very different from some of the countries where I’ve played before.”

San Diego will kick off their Leagues Cup campaign on July 29 against Pachuca, the club at which Hirving Lozano made his professional debut – and a place he still calls home.

"It will be a very special moment," he said. "I came out of Pachuca, it’s my home. It’s a very important part of my life and my football career. Honestly, playing against them will be a very special moment. It’s something beautiful – hopefully it’ll be a great match."

Saharan bemoans 'rash shots' from India: 'We didn't spend enough time in the middle'

The India captain however is proud of his team and wants to take all the learnings further into his career

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2024India’s captain Uday Saharan felt that a few rash shots by the batters, coupled with their inability to spend any significant length of time at the crease, were the main reasons behind the team falling short in the final of the Under-19 World Cup.”It was fine. We played a few shots and couldn’t spend some time on the surface,” Saharan said after India went down by 79 runs to hand Australia their fourth title. “We were prepared for it but we couldn’t execute well. That is where we went wrong.”Australia, after electing to bat, rode on Harjas Singh’s fifty and a useful cameo in the death by Oliver Peake to post 253 for 8 from their 50 overs. Kohli not in favour of Impact Player: 'Not every team has a Bumrah or Rashid'

“One extra batter is the reason why I am playing with a 200-plus strike rate in the powerplay”

ESPNcricinfo staff18-May-2024Virat Kohli has admitted that he is not in favour of the Impact Player rule, as it is “disrupting the balance” of the game. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter said he was concerned that there is no longer an “equal battle between bat and ball” as bowlers now expect to get hit for a boundary every single delivery, and batters such as himself are forced to score at a high rate right from the powerplay.Kohli is the latest player to speak out against Impact Players, echoing the sentiments of his India captain Rohit Sharma, who had said last month that he was “not a fan” of the rule.”I agree with him [Rohit]; I say it how it is. If you see in this IPL, okay, entertainment is [on] one side, but the bowlers are feeling like what they should do [to restrict the batters],” Kohli told Jio Cinema. “I have never experienced anything like it where bowlers think they will concede a four or a six every ball. This is a very high-level of cricket, and in my opinion, it shouldn’t be that dominant [in one aspect]. There is a beauty in having an equal battle between bat and ball.”Not every team has a [Jasprit] Bumrah or a Rashid Khan or a mystery bowler. So what will you do? I am telling you, one extra batter is the reason why I am playing with a 200-plus strike rate in the powerplay. I know there is a batsman coming in at No. 8 as well.”As a batsman, I can say this rule is good, but the match should be exciting. Only fours and sixes are not exciting in cricket. Exciting is that you can defend 160 as well. So I think a bit of balance has been tipped over.”Related

Kohli, who will be turning 36 later this year, will be playing his sixth T20 World Cup since his first in 2012, having also played in four ODI World Cups since 2011. Kohli said that the “energy” at a competition like a World Cup always helps him get “pulled in”.”I can say I am hungry as ever. If I don’t have the hunger, you will not see me in the tournament,” he said. “If I don’t have that mindset, I cannot play… Once the team atmosphere builds up, it’s a beautiful journey. We had one in the last [ODI] World Cup [as well]. We really enjoyed the World Cup.”Unfortunately, we could not finish it off, but we had a really enjoyable time as a team. People loved watching us as well, and I am sure that we will have a really good tournament this time as well.”While referring to the ODI World Cup last year, where India fell short in the final against Australia in Ahmedabad, Kohli said there was no regret at having lost the match. Instead, he recalled the only two instances when he “had a heartbreak”, both of which happened to be in the year 2016.”One was the [T20] World Cup. I was in a space where I was feeling no matter what, I could do it,” Kohli said, looking back at India’s defeat to West Indies in the semi-final in Mumbai. “But those no-balls and this and that, that took me a long time to get over. The next day I was literally drained and couldn’t get out of my room. It was very hard on me.”And then when we lost the IPL final here [in Bengaluru]. It felt like that was written in the stars – from the position we were in and then reached the final. We were chasing 200-odd [209], and in nine overs, we were 100-something without loss. When AB [de Villiers] got out, we needed 68 [actually, 71] off 42 balls with eight wickets in hand. If you look at it, you feel like how did you lose that game?”Virat Kohli on MS Dhoni: “He finished so many games. He was the only one who knew what he was doing”•Associated Press’I have learnt by failing again and again’Kohli has batted at a strike rate of 155.16 so far this season, his highest across any IPL he has played in. His previous best was 152.03 in 2016, when he had come close to breaching the 1000-run mark in a single edition.Earlier this season, Kohli had even brushed off the strike-rate debate, and hit back at those speaking “from a box”. Kohli felt he didn’t need to “tell anyone what sort of player I am, or what my ability is”.”I never asked anyone how to win games for your team. I have learnt it myself – by being in that situation, by failing again and again,” he said. “You can win the odd game for your team, but if you are doing it again and again, it’s not by chance.”Kohli gave the example of MS Dhoni, who is regarded as among the best finishers in limited-overs cricket. He said that while Dhoni was often criticised for taking a game deep, he still came out successful.”I always say that watching it from the outside and living that moment yourself are two very different things,” Kohli said. “People used to often say about Mahi that why he takes it to the 20th over or the 50th over. But he finished so many games. He was the only one who knew what he was doing. No one else knew but he knew, and [he] won the games. For me, that is muscle memory. He knew that if he could take it to the last over, he would see it through.

“We have had some great memories, [and] great partnerships together playing for India. So that’s always a great occasion when people see us together playing on the field”Virat Kohli on playing against MS Dhoni in the IPL

“My mindset was different. I would always say, ‘Mahi , let’s finish it in the 19th, or the 49th’. If he is batting with me, then it’s different; but if he is batting alone, then there is no chance [of him finishing it off early]. He take it till the end, and the opposition would be like he would finish it with one six.”So I never felt that I should go and tell someone that don’t say all this. I know what I can do on the ground. I don’t need any approval, or assurance, that I played so well.”Ahead of RCB’s final group game, against Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Kohli looked forward to playing against Dhoni yet again, unsure if it would be the last time they would face off in the IPL.”It’s going to be a great game. Me and him playing again together – maybe for the last time, you never know,” Kohli said. “That’s a special thing. We have had some great memories, [and] great partnerships together playing for India. So that’s always a great occasion when people see us together playing on the field.”
