USACA expelled by the ICC

After 52 years as the ICC’s member governing body in the USA, the USA Cricket Association was expelled following a unanimous vote at the ICC’s board meeting on Thursday

Peter Della Penna22-Jun-2017After 52 years as the ICC’s member governing body in the USA, the USA Cricket Association (USACA) was expelled following a unanimous vote at the ICC’s board meeting on Thursday during the AGM in London. The expulsion ends a turbulent tenure that included three suspensions handed down by the ICC since 2005. While USACA was able to get its affairs in order to have the first two suspensions lifted, there was no way back from its most recent reprimand in 2015.”We would hope that this puts a final line on the matter,” ICC chief executive David Richardson said when asked about USACA’s expulsion in a conference call with reporters following the vote on Thursday. “Whether they decide to take legal action is obviously their decision but we would be ready to oppose it if need be.”USACA had threatened to take the ICC to court in the event of being expelled but Richardson says the ICC has proven it is standing on firm ground and does not expect the decision to be overturned by any legal challenge USACA might attempt. USACA president Gladstone Dainty and executive secretary Sankar Renganathan did not respond to ESPNcricinfo’s requests for comment on the expulsion.”Don’t forget they’ve already taken the matter to the ICC Dispute Resolution Committee on an expedited basis attempting to stop the board and full council from considering the expulsion of USACA at these meetings,” Richardson said. “The arbitrator found in favor of the ICC and found the ICC had acted rationally and was quite entitled to take the decision to expel USACA.”An ICC Americas-led caretaker administration has been overseeing cricket operations in the USA since USACA’s suspension in 2015 and Richardson said they would continue to organise national team activities in the interim until the ICC approves a different governing body to replace USACA. A USA women’s squad was announced earlier this week to tour Scotland for a T20 Qualifier, reaffirming Richardson’s stance, since 2015, that USA’s players should not be punished as a consequence of USACA’s troubles.”The whole process, from suspending USACA to expelling them, the whole objective was to unite the cricket community in the United States behind a national governing body that represented everybody,” Richardson said. “So the first step will be creating the governance infrastructure to fill that void and represent the whole cricket community bearing in mind the size of the country.”Coming with that will be the competition structures that need to exist, the development pathway, everything that a national governing body needs to get involved in. Over the next 12 months, that will be developed slowly but surely. At the same time [that USACA has been expelled], up until now the board has taken the approach that we don’t want to prejudice people playing cricket in the United States. So at the moment we have got an American office and within that office we have staff tasked with looking after the cricket community to ensure that at least the minimum is done to keep cricket going.”USACA had faced numerous problems in recent years, mainly to do with governance. The board also struggled to escape from crushing debt, currently listed at more than $4 million, though a large chunk of that came about as a result of exorbitant legal fees racked up from court battles waged by the board, including one relating to the disputed general elections of 2012. The money owed to lawyers ate into the organisation’s ability to fund national team activities, with various national camps and tournaments either postponed or canceled as a result. The USA Cricket Association had been suspended three times since 2005 under president Gladstone Dainty•Peter Della Penna

But the final straw leading to expulsion was USACA’s refusal to ratify an ICC-approved constitution, one aimed at curing governance woes by way of proposed term limits for board members as well as redefined positions on the board to reduce the powers of the incumbent executive. Instead, USACA ratified an alternate, edited version at a special general meeting on April 8, escalating the battle with the ICC before it reached its tipping point on Thursday. Richardson had sent a letter to USACA’s leadership following the vote at the April 8 AGM, warning them that the decision to ratify an altered version of what the ICC had presented to them ‘seriously undermined’ their chances of having suspension lifted.USACA’s path to expulsion was set in motion more than five years ago during the events leading into the disputed 2012 general election. Based on the results of a member compliance audit, the incumbent USACA board took the decision to disenfranchise 32 out of 47 voting-eligible league members in highly controversial circumstances. Many of the league presidents who were disenfranchised had publicly voiced opposition to USACA president Gladstone Dainty in a conference call several months prior to the election, which Dainty and most of the incumbent board eventually won in a landslide. However, it proved to be a pyrrhic victory for Dainty and the rest of the board because the majority of the disenfranchised leagues broke off to form the American Cricket Federation rather than pursue reinstatement with USACA. Under the ICC membership guidelines at the time, a member needed to be the “sole governing body” for administering cricket in their country. If more than two governing bodies existed with both claiming to have superiority, it could be seen as a violation of the statute and grounds to have membership status suspended. In fact, this particular scenario was a contributing factor to USACA’s first suspension in 2005.The ICC initially aided USACA by amending the wording of the Associate membership statute 3.1. Rather than the “sole” governing body being the ICC’s member in a given country, the ICC would recognise the governing body – at the ICC’s own discretion – that is “responsible for the administration, management and development of cricket in the country.” The ICC subsequently encouraged ACF leagues to rejoin USACA in an effort to mend fences. But ACF leadership spurned this approach and though a Dainty-led board won re-election again in 2015, the victory was short-lived as the ICC suspended USACA later that summer. An ICC report, which was presented to the world body’s members ahead of the suspension vote at the 2015 ICC annual conference, laid out numerous flaws with USACA. Among them, the ICC found that USACA did not represent the majority of clubs and leagues around the country and that the general consensus of stakeholders found USACA ‘unprofessional and not trustworthy’.The ICC subsequently laid out 39 terms and conditions for USACA to be reinstated. USACA was able to meet many of the requirements, but the main sticking point was the new constitution. The ICC has since formed a series of advisory groups in four key areas to help design the framework for a successful governance model in the future. It is expected these advisory groups will continue to work with ICC Americas staff until a governing body is designated to fill the vacancy left by USACA, a process expected to take a minimum of one to two years.

PSG’s £259m Star Issues Transfer Response To Saudi Links

The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga, which seems to take place every summer in the transfer window’s version of Christmas, has taken yet more twists and turns in recent days, with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal blowing things more open than ever. The Frenchman, frozen out at Paris Saint-Germain and left out of their pre-season tour of Japan, has found himself in somewhat of a standoff with the Ligue 1 club. Either he leaves now, or he signs a new contract, is the reported stance of the club. There is no option to simply see out his contract, and leave in amicable fashion on a free deal next summer, according to reports. So, here we are. Two stubborn parties, both with hands at the ready, waiting to fire the first, and deciding shot in a saga that continues to drag.It seems as though even record-breaking money won’t change Mbappe’s position on the matter, too, speaking out for the first time since the Al-Hilal reports.

Kylian Mbappe issues first transfer response

Taking to Twitter to speak for the first time since the transfer rumours, Mbappe responded to a Tweet from basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, which read: “Al Hilal you can take me. I look like Kylian Mbappe.”

The star striker couldn’t help but respond to Antetokounmpo, Tweeting out a number of laughing emojis.

The response almost highlights the elephant in the room, as Mbappe somewhat acknowledges the rumours, without, of course, providing his answer.

Leaving football on the biggest cliffhanger of the transfer window so far, Mbappe certainly has a big decision to make.

In a potential clue over the striker’s future, sources told Relevo that Al-Hilal’s bid and PSG’s stance doesn’t change things for Mbappe, saying: “These things do nothing but reinforce the determination of the player, who has a year on his contract that cannot be ignored.

“If he has to stay on the bench, he will stay, we’ll see how long because the Champions League arrives right away… If they are winning, then everything is fine, but how do you have a player like that in the stands if things are not going well.”

How much did Al-Hilal bid for Kylian Mbappe?

According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG have accepted a bid of €300m (£258.27m) from Al-Hilal to sign their want-away forward. Meanwhile, as per James Benge of CBS, the Saudi Arabian club have offered Mbappe €700m (£602.63m) over the course of the season, in what is an eye-watering amount.

It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman accepts the deal or not, but if he does, the breakdown of his wages will be truly staggering.

As per TalkSport, Mbappe would earn €58.33m (£50.22m) a month, €13.3m (£11.45m) a week, and €1.9m (£1.64m) per day.

That also works out to be €79.9k (£68.79) an hour.

It will speak volumes if Mbappe rejects such an offer to stay at PSG, who will be left in the frustrating position of facing the prospect of losing their star man for free next summer.

In the battle between the two parties, it’s hard to see right now just who will come out on top at the end of it all.

Roston Chase walked away from the West Indies Players’ Association/Cricket West Indies’ annual awards ceremony with two of the biggest prizes: the Cricketer of the Year Award, and the Test Cricketer of the Year Award. In addition, the offspin-bowling allrounder from Barbados was also named Emerging Cricketer of the Year and Regional Four-Day Cricketer of the Year. Stafanie Taylor, who is currently leading West Indies’ women’s team at the World Cup in England, was the Women’s Cricketer of the Year.Men’s Test and ODI captain Jason Holder took home the ODI prize, while big-hitting allrounder Andre Russell – who is currently serving a one-year ban for breaking anti-doping whereabouts regulations three times in a 12-month period – won T20I Cricketer of the Year at the ceremony in Jamaica on Friday night. That Chase was in the spotlight all night was no surprise, given the fighting innings he produced on several occasions in Test cricket over the past year when West Indies were in a hole. Chase made his Test debut in July 2016, and has three hundreds and three fifties in ten Tests at 48.53. Four of these six fifty-plus scores came after his team were four down for less than 70, and one half-century came despite having to go off the field after taking a blow to the elbow off a bouncer from Pakistan quick Mohammad Amir. His hundred in the second innings of that same Test, in Dominica, brought a struggling West Indies to within six balls of saving the match – he was batting on 101 not out off 239 balls when No. 11 Shannon Gabriel was dismissed. Another of the hundreds, 137 against India in Jamaica last August, got the job done, helping West Indies bat out 104 overs and draw despite being 48 for 4.

Manchester United: Red Devils Legends Sparks De Gea Debate

To say that David de Gea's Manchester United career ended with a period of poor form would be an understatement. The Spaniard seemed to make mistake after mistake, culminating in the Red Devils' FA Cup final defeat against local rivals Manchester City.

Truth be told, United cut ties at the right time to bring in a far more modern shot-stopper in the form of Andre Onana. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper is everything that De Gea is not, with his ability to play from the back particularly impressive – as you can this in this footage.

De Gea, meanwhile, often struggled with his distribution, limiting Erik ten Hag's system from the back.

Despite his clear drop-off, however, Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke still believes that the Spain international is better than Onana in what is a controversial take, to say the least.

Dwight Yorke delivers David de Gea verdict

Speaking to OLBG, via Goal, Yorke went as far as saying that fans will soon be asking for De Gea back. He said: “I've said before that Man United need to be careful what they wish for with losing David de Gea. For all the good De Gea has done for Man United, the way his career ended was really bad. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt Man United now they've bought Andre Onana.

"Be careful what you wish for. De Gea is the Golden Glove winner, a high-profile player who has made mistakes, like the rest of us. De Gea winning the Golden Glove is like winning the Golden Boot and being the top scorer at the club but still getting replaced by the football club. That does not resonate well with me.

“In my opinion, Onana is not as good as De Gea and people need to watch him very carefully. I've seen Onana before, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish with how fast the game is and how often you are pressured.

"Onana tries to be an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper sometimes. I will be watching this guy very closely, and the people who have criticised De Gea and wanted him to leave will probably be the ones who will be calling him to come back. I'm hoping that doesn't happen for Man United’s sake.”

Is Andre Onana better than David de Gea?

It's certainly an interesting take from Yorke, considering how well Onana performed for Inter Milan last season as the Serie A club suffered Champions League final heartbreak at the hands of Manchester City.

Compared to De Gea last season, as per FBref, Onana had a better save percentage, conceded less goals per 90, completed more passes per 90, and stopped more crosses.

So, if De Gea is currently a better goalkeeper than Onana, it is not the stats that Yorke has used to form his opinion, it seems.

We're sure the former Inter man will prove the Manchester United legend wrong throughout the season, whether he admits it, or not.

Indeed, the stats certainly show that United are not getting a worse keeper than De Gea. But rather, they are quite likely instead getting a major upgrade.

Opener Imrul Kayes adjusting to No. 3

While Imrul Kayes has been told to prepare to bat at one-down against Australia and is happy to perform the role the team wants him to, he admits it’s not the easiest switch to make

Mohammad Isam22-Aug-2017

Of his 28 Test appearances, Imrul Kayes has opened the batting on 25 occasions•AFP

Imrul Kayes has been told to prepare to play at No. 3 in next week’s first Test against Australia, but hasn’t been given any guarantees by the team management. He will continue at one-drop, the position he played in against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh’s last Test in March, though he said the relatively new role will take time to adjust to.”Coach has told me that I will be batting in this position,” Kayes said. “I am preparing for it although it is difficult to adjust to No. 3 after being an opener. I feel lucky to be playing for Bangladesh and while there can be a personal choice in terms of batting position, I also have to understand the team’s needs. I am okay batting in any position really, opening or No. 3.”Kayes will be playing a stop-gap role, replacing regular No. 3 Mominul Haque after he had a poor outing in the first Test in Sri Lanka. Kayes has one century at No. 3, but after that ton in 2014 he has averaged 18.60 in his next five innings at that position. As an opener Kayes has featured in 25 off his 28 Tests, and has formed Bangladesh’s most-prolific opening pair with Tamim Iqbal – their association includes a 312-run stand against Pakistan in 2015.Despite Mominul’s late addition into the 14-man squad after much drama, he is most likely to be spending time on the bench as Kayes pads up. Kayes explained that transferring from the opener to No. 3 is a big deal since openers are used to getting out in the middle and not waiting for their turn to bat.”I become rather excited when I am sitting padded up in the dressing room,” Kayes said. “Tamim won’t be able to do it and even I have trouble doing it. Still, I had to do it [switch batting roles] for the team.”Tackling the new ball can be tricky but there is an advantage. Sometimes the opening batsmen and bowler don’t know much about each other’s strength, but when the No. 3 comes to bat, the bowler [has already settled into a rhythm]. But there are great batsmen who do a fine job at No. 3.”

TalkSport Reporter Suggets Andre Interest Is A "Tactic" By Liverpool

Liverpool's interest in Brazilian midfielder Andre Trindade is "clearly a negotiating tactic" to help their position in any future negotiations with Southampton for their exciting midfielder Romeo Lavia, claims journalist Alex Crook.

Are Liverpool signing Romeo Lavia this summer?

It's been a real summer of change for the red half of Merseyside so far this year. Club captain Jordan Henderson left the side for the riches of the Saudi Pro League alongside Champions League-winning Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.

It's not just departures changing the face of the team, though, as Jurgen Klopp has already welcomed two new starting midfielders to Anfield.

The first to make his way to the northwest was Brighton & Hove Albion's World Cup-winning star, Alexis Mac Allister, who signed for the club in a deal worth an initial £35m.

Shortly after the Argentinian arrived, Hungarian superstar, Dominik Szoboszlai made the journey from RB Leipzig to Liverpool in a deal worth a reported £60m.

While these two players represent excellent business, Fabinho's exit has necessitated the signing of a new number six to complete Klopp's midfield overhaul, and it looks like Liverpool have identified 19-year-old Lavia as that new number six.

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

According to Sky Sports, the Reds have now had two offers for the youngster rejected by the Saints, with neither one reaching even £40m, considerably short of the £50m valuation they have of their star.

Whilst the six-time European champions retain their interest in the Brussels-born gem, they have also turned their attention to Fluminense prospect Andre, with the Daily Mail reporting that they have already made an offer for an estimated £21m.

However, with the genuine interest the Reds have shown in Lavia thus far, this attempt to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian could be a tactic intended to cause the Saints to lower their price somewhat, according to journalist Alex Crook.

He explained the situation live on TalkSport, with the clip being posted to their YouTube channel:

"I don't know if they will walk away. It always makes me suspicious, and I've been doing this job long enough that when a new name suddenly emerges as it did yesterday [Tuesday] with a Brazilian player, Andre, I think his name was. That's clearly a negotiating tactic from Liverpool, 'let's get this name out there; let's make it clear to Southampton it's not Romeo Lavia or nobody'.

"But they bid up to £40m, Southampton want £50m. Again, for a club of Liverpool's stature, that doesn't seem a massive gap, and I think this lad is going to be a really talented Premier League player, Romeo Lavia, I think £50m is a fair price."

How good was Romeo Lavia last season?

Even though he is only 19 years old, Southampton's midfield prodigy is relatively experienced for a player his age, especially after starting 26 Premier League games last season.

In those games for the Saints, he scored one goal, maintained a passing accuracy of 86.4% – the best of a player with at least 90 minutes under their belt in the entire squad – and averaged a match rating of 6.56, which is made more impressive when the team he was playing in is taken into account, per WhoScored.

He can also put in the defensive work when needed with Fbref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, placing the 5 foot 11 "monster" in the top 4% of midfielders for blocks per 90.

He has evidently made an impact on his teammates on the south coast, with Theo Walcott telling TalkSport in January:

Southampton's Romeo Lavia

"He's young, he's 18/19 when he's off the field, but when he's on the field, it's mad. It's like he's played over 200 games in the Premier League, that's how much I rate him. It's very interesting to see, watching him from the stands, obviously it looks so easy from the stands, it always does.

"You probably know that watching us, 'he should make that run or make that pass', it's not as straightforward as that but when I watch him, I'm like 'you look way above your age right now'."

It'll be interesting to see whether or not the links to Andre will affect Southampton's stance towards a deal with Liverpool, but the Reds would be wise to do all they can to sign Lavia before someone beats them to it.
