Vidarbha win Irani Cup with their batting might

They added the Irani Cup to the Ranji Trophy championship to ensure their 2017-18 season was an unprecedented success

It was only three months ago that Vidarbha had become Ranji Trophy champions for the first time, but they were thirsty for more silverware, and their batsmen were greedy for more runs. Over the past week in Nagpur, they amassed a total of 800 for 7 – Wasim Jaffer contributed 286 – and then bowled out Rest of India for 390 to win the Irani Cup as well to ensure their 2017-18 season was an unprecedented success.Hanuma Vihari and Jayant Yadav stood in the way for a little while. They came to the crease at 98 for 6 with two days of play still left, plenty of time for Vidarbha to pursue an outright result. But they just couldn’t get the wickets.Vihari made a splendid 183 and right alongside him Jayat contributed 96 in a 216-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate finally broke through and finished with 3 for 97 to provide his team with a trophy-clinching lead of 410 runs. There was still just enough time in the match for a couple of Vidarbha to fill their boots and the game ended with 23-year old opener Akshay Wadkar scoring a half-century. In all, there were 1269 runs scored for the loss of only 17 wickets over five days of play at the VCA stadium.

Weakened Middlesex complete assertive win

Middlesex’s relegation last season felt even more bizarre as they dispensed with Northants in confident fashion within three days at Lord’s

Alex Winter15-Apr-2018
ScorecardAt the end of the 2017 season, among crossbow-gate and threats and counter-threats of legal action, Middlesex shrugged their shoulders, magnanimously accepted relegation and vowed to return to Division One of the County Championship at the first attempt. A 160-run victory over a Northamptonshire side who challenged for promotion until the final day of last season laid down a marker for their immediate return.Middlesex were clever and clinical in conditions where Northants should have been competitive and it took only 38 deliveries after lunch on the third day to take the five remaining wickets for victory. This was a Middlesex team missing Steven Finn and Tom Barber, the latter a left-armer clocked quicker than any at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough, and a host of batsman – Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Nick Gubbins and Stevie Eskinazi, last season’s top runscorer in the Championship, all injured and Nick Compton not considered for selection. Added together, it is bizarre that Middlesex were even relegated last season but they took no time in proving they are too good for Division Two.Their bowling injuries actually worked out perfectly as Tim Murtagh and James Harris, neither of alarming pace but skiddy and skilful, shared 17 wickets in the match. Murtagh should make his Test debut next month for Ireland against Pakistan – has anyone done so with more than 700 first-class wickets behind them? Harris’ attempts to add pace to achieve England recognition failed but here provided a reminder of why he was so sought-after six years ago.”We’re open minded” – Robson

Sam Robson (Middlesex captain): “It’s a great start – obviously with what happened last year, you want to bounce back strongly. We’ve had a good win here, but things are going to get harder, there’s no doubt about that. We just want to crack on and be open-minded about what we come up against.”
Alex Wakely (northants captain): “It was a bowler’s paradise and it was always going to be very difficult to score runs. I think the pitch was slightly under-prepared, possibly too soft to play first-class cricket on. But it was the same for both sides and ultimately Middlesex bowled better than we did.”

Murtagh began the hosts’ push for victory, getting the fifth ball of the day to bounce on Ben Duckett and take a glove to short leg. Duckett was not expected to play after finger surgery but he might have wished to still be in rehab after a second single-figure score in the match.Northants did settle through Rob Newton and Alex Wakely, who compiled stand of 51 for the fourth wicket, and at 95 for 3 were still very much in contention chasing 303. But Newton – having been dropped at gully trying to drive Tom Helm – went to force Toby Roland-Jones off the back foot and edged behind.Newton perhaps encapsulates the nearly-nature of Northants’ red-ball cricket. He passed fifty 11 times last season in the Championship but made only one century. Here, the new ball had been seen off as he reached 44 but he failed to make the major contribution Northants needed to be competitive. It was a familiar tale for Northants – “good but not right” as Roy Walker used to say – whose batting collapses last season and the failure to grind out batting bonus points was the chief reason for their failure win promotion.Any chance of them producing a close finish here – with the pitch making it perilously difficult for batsman to get set – rested with Newton and Wakely. And when Wakely was pinned on the toe in Hilton Cartwright’s first over for his new club – an afterthought signing for Middlesex only after their injury list had swelled – the game was up and Northants crumbled before the scones could be put in the oven for tea.Tim Murtagh in action for Middlesex•Getty Images

With a bowling attack to rival most in the country, Northants should challenge again but they were not as persistent as Middlesex here, with the fuller length of Murtagh and Harris trumping the good-looking but less effective back of a length the visiting attack erred towards. Short of a gallop they may have been – Middlesex enjoyed better preparation with their marquee at Marchant Taylor’s School – Northants were edged in all facets of this game and a chance to run the title favourites close was squandered. The Middlesex juggernaut flattened the first obstacle.

Ranking the 10 fastest goals in Premier League history

The Premier League has been home to some of football's most iconic goals, such as Wayne Rooney’s bicycle kick against Manchester City or Dennis Bergkamp’s glorious skill against Newcastle.

But who have scored the quickest goals in the competition since it came into being back in 1992?

Here’s Football FanCast's look at the 10 fastest goals in Premier League history…

10 James Beattie – Chelsea v Southampton: 13.52 seconds

The tenth-fastest goal in Premier League history was scored by Southampton legend James Beattie.

During his seven-year stint with the Saints, the striker made 232 appearances, scoring 76 goals.

But his most famous goal for Southampton almost certainly came against Chelsea during the 2004/05 campaign.

After moving the ball between the defence and midfield from kick-off, Chelsea winger Joe Cole attempted a pass to his centre-backs from just inside his own half.

However, the five-time England international was able to intercept Cole’s terribly misplaced effort.

Beattie allowed the ball to bounce past him 30 yards from goal, and on the volley, he spectacularly struck the ball into the top left-hand corner, leaving Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech no chance.

Unfortunately, he would later score an own goal as the hosts came from behind to win.

9 Kevin Nolan – Blackburn v Bolton: 13.48 seconds

Kevin Nolan enjoyed a stellar Premier League career, making 401 appearances, scoring 69 goals, for Bolton, Newcastle United and West Ham, where he is now David Moyes’ assistant manager.

But during just his third season in the top flight (out of an incredible 13), Nolan scored what is now the ninth-fastest goal in Premier League history.

After Bolton teammate Kevin Davies was somehow able to keep the ball in at the byline and put a ball into the box, an ever-present Nolan was able to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

This early goal would prove pivotal as the Wanderers would go on to scrape a narrow 4-3 win.

8 Chris Sutton – Everton v Blackburn: 12.94 seconds

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton were labelled 'SAS' during their 1994/95 title-winning season together at Blackburn.

Between them, they scored 49 times (with Sutton recording 15 of them), and they also linked up for 13 goals – a record that was held until 2020/21 when it was beaten by Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Although, Sutton and Shearer still hold the record for goal combinations in a title-winning season.

One of the goals they combined for also broke the record for the fastest Premier League goal (until it was beaten by the next goal on this list).

After the ball was thumped long from kick-off, Sutton headed the ball on the edge of the box to the all-time Premier League top goalscorer, who then nodded it back to him, allowing the Norwich City academy graduate to touch the ball down and fire into the back of the net.

7 Dwight Yorke – Coventry v Aston Villa: 12.16 seconds

Only one season after Sutton broke the record, Aston Villa and Dwight Yorke broke it again by just 0.78 seconds.

Against Midlands rivals Coventry City, Villa midfielder Ian Taylor broke down the right-hand side and whipped a superb ball into the box which found the striker, whose header powered past goalkeeper John Filan, leaving him no chance.

After leaving the West Midlands club, where he won two League Cups, the Trinidad and Tobago striker went on to enjoy an even more successful spell at Manchester United, where he won a Champions League and three Premier League titles.

On top of this, he scored 123 times in 375 games across his sensational Premier League career.

6 Mark Viduka – Charlton v Leeds: 11.9 seconds

Mark Viduka was part of the famous Leeds side that made it all the way to the Champions League semi-finals and finished fourth in the league, however, less famously, the striker scored what is now the sixth-fastest goal in Premier League history.

Just like many of the goals on this list, the ball was played back to the defence, who subsequently thumped the ball long.

After the pass was headed down to the Australia international, Viduka found himself completely free in the box, allowing him to calmly finish into the bottom right-hand corner.

Although the centre-forward was a talisman for Leeds, scoring 71 times in 165 appearances, he was part of the equally famous side that was relegated from the Premier League in 2004.

5 Christian Eriksen – Tottenham v Man United: 10.54 seconds

In the summer of 2022, Christian Eriksen signed for Manchester United, but before giving the Red Devils fans something to cheer about, the midfielder was causing dismay within the United fanbase.

After Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen smashed the ball up the pitch, Harry Kane beat Phil Jones to a header on the edge of the box, which ended up at the feet of Son, who flicked the ball back into the path of the Denmark international, meaning Eriksen could comfortably slot home into the left-hand side netting.

To add insult to injury for Jones, he would later go on to score an own goal, handing Tottenham a 2-0 victory.

Since signing for the red side of Manchester, Eriksen has won the League Cup – his first trophy in England – while he has also provided 11 assists and scored three goals across 50 appearances.

4 Alan Shearer – Newcastle v Man City: 10.52 seconds

Unsurprisingly, Sutton’s Blackburn attacking partner Shearer has also made an appearance on the list.

After leaving Blackburn in 1996, the former England international spent 10 years playing for Newcastle.

One of the 206 goals Shearer scored for the Magpies came against Manchester City in 2003. Straight from kick-off, City passed the ball back to goalkeeper Carlo Nash, whose attempted clearance was quickly closed down by the on-rushing striker, leaving him with a completely open net to tap the ball into.

Shearer’s 260 Premier League goals mean he still holds the record for the most goals in the division, and after Kane’s move to Bayern Munich, it looks like his title may stand a little longer.

3 Ledley King – Bradford City v Tottenham: 9.82 seconds

Despite making 322 appearances for his only club Tottenham, Ledley King’s career was plagued by injuries.

This also meant that he played in matches without training throughout the week, to try to reduce the risk of injury.

These injuries finally took their toll, as King’s chronic knee problems led to his retirement in 2012 at 31 years old.

However, in 2000, King scored the first sub-10-second goal in the Premier League. After a poor clearance from the Bradford City defence, the ball fell to the England international 25 yards from goal, and his powerful, low-driven strike bounced past the static goalkeeper.

2 Philip Billing – Arsenal v Bournemouth: 9.11 seconds

At the end of the 2022/23 season, newly promoted Bournemouth were fighting for survival in the top division of English football, having spent most of the season in the bottom three.

In March, when the Cherries travelled to the Emirates Stadium, any kind of result would have been vital in their bid for survival.

However, at a stadium the south coast side have never even earned a draw at, they shocked the then-league leaders Arsenal inside 10 seconds.

Attacking quickly down the right-hand side, the ball into the box was missed in the box by Gunners defenders Gabriel and William Saliba, which left the ball to trickle through to midfielder Philip Billing, who was left open to tap into the net.

Unfortunately for Bournemouth, despite scoring a goal either half, their lead would be cancelled out by a late Arsenal comeback, which concluded with Reiss Nelson’s last-minute goal that put the north Londoners 3-2 up.

1 Shane Long – Watford v Southampton: 7.69 seconds

This list is bookended by two goals from Championship side Southampton, as in April 2019, Irish striker Shane Long broke the record.

Straight from kick-off, the ball was passed back to Watford defender Craig Cathcart, who attempted to clear the ball up the pitch.

However, Long had other ideas, as he pressed Cathcart immediately and blocked his attempted pass (a move typical of former Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s high-pressing system).

The interception played the striker perfectly through on goal and his accurate chip over veteran shot-stopper Ben Foster sealed a new league record.

Aston Villa: Unstoppable £75k-p/w star could usurp Agbonlahor’s legacy

Aston Villa have seen a host of talent grace the pitch at Villa Park over the years, with some leaving a mark on the club forever for their contributions in claret and blue.

It’s hoped that Unai Emery is in the process of writing his own history into the books at Villa, with the Spaniard continuing to exceed expectations following his arrival as manager in October 2022.

The former Arsenal boss took the Villans from 16th in the Premier League table to 7th, subsequently earning them a place in the UEFA Conference League and marking Villa’s first European involvement since 2010.

Aston Villa managerUnaiEmery

With not even a year spent in the Midlands, the trajectory of Emery’s success is looking positive, with the four-time Europa League winner seeming to be capable of achieving significant highs at Villa Park like those before him.

From the dazzling displays provided by Martin O’Neill’s stars in the top-flight, to Dean Smith’s promotion gaining gems of 2019, Villa fans have celebrated their side for their achievements over recent years.

Each manager that has notably succeeded in the Premier League era for the Villans has had some magnificent players to thank for their highs, with Villa Park being home to some quality attacking talent both past and present.

Who are Aston Villa’s top-scorers in the Premier League?

The key for success in any side in world football is an identifiable source for goals, which Villa have seen plenty of over the years since the founding of the Premier League in 1992.

The Villans’ most prolific goalscorer from the early days of the Premier League was Dwight Yorke, who netted 60 goals in 179 league appearances in claret and blue, placing him as the club’s second-highest scorer of the Premier League era.

Dion Dublin is listed as third in the pack for his contribution of 48 league goals, followed by Juan Pablo Angel who registered 44 goals, and Christian Benteke who netted 42 in the Premier League whilst at Villa Park.

While all the scorers listed are memorable members of the squads on show over the years, one name stands out from the rest, with Villa’s current leading scorer in the Premier League being none other than Gabriel Agbonlahor.

How good was Gabriel Agbonlahor?

A product of Villa’s academy, Agbonlahor lived out his career as a one club man, only leaving his home surroundings to endeavour on loan spells to both Watford and Sheffield Wednesday in the early days of his journey.

Leading the pack with 74 Premier League goals, the striker wrote himself in Villa folklore for his commitment to the club over the years and the contribution he made to the various squads he appeared in.

The legendary forward hit his prime under O’Neill, scoring over 10 goals in three consecutive Premier League seasons between 2007/08 and 2009/10.

In all three of those campaign’s, O’Neill and Agbonlahor guided the Villans to consecutive 6th place finishes, which remain as the club’s highest league placement since 2010 with Emery’s 7th place finishers coming close last term.

Between 2007/08 and 2009/10, the Englishman contributed to 58 goals in the league, scoring 35 and assisting 23 to inspire his teammates to consistently perform in the top-flight.

Aston Villa's former forward Gabby Agbonlahor.

For his goals, his loyalty, and the electrifying quality he installed to Villa’s attack, the club veteran will forever be remembered at Villa Park, with one star in Emery’s current crop of talent having the potential to replicate the legend’s achievements in Birmingham.

Dubbed the “perfect signing” at the time of his arrival by Agbonlahor, Ollie Watkins’ form in front of goal has been integral to Villa’s growth, and with talks of a new contract circulating, the Englishman could be on the cards to chase the current records.

How many goals has Ollie Watkins scored?

Level in fourth of Villa’s all-time Premier League scorers with Juan Pablo Angel with 44 goals, Watkins is just five goals away from moving into third place ahead of Dublin.

Considering the start that the 27-year-old has made to this season, it looks increasingly possible that Watkins could narrow the gap significantly between himself and Agbonlahor in this campaign alone.

With four goals from seven appearances this term in the league, the Englishman showcased just how dangerous he is in the final third last time out, scoring a hattrick at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The three goals against the Seagulls wasn’t the former Brentford talisman’s first match ball of the 2023/24 campaign, as he netted three against Hibernian in the Europa Conference League qualifiers in August.

In total, Watkins has netted 50 goals for the Villans in all competitions following his arrival in 2020, with his highest league tally coming under Emery last term where he found himself on the scoresheet 15 times in 37 appearances.

How much is Ollie Watkins worth?

In the summer of his arrival, the forward had an expected transfer value (xTV) of €23.7m (£20.5m), a figure that has increased to €41.2m (£35.7m) to where it sits today, telling of the potential future profit the Villans could make from the striker, via Football Transfers.

During this summer, the Englishman was linked to a sensational £60m move to Bayern Munich by The Sun, suggesting that the price that Villa value their star man at is far beyond his estimated market value.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

What’s exciting for the Villans is that rumours have surfaced to suggest that Watkins could commit his future to Villa Park, with talkSPORT revealing that the forward is ready to pen an improved deal.

Could Ollie Watkins leave a bigger legacy than Agbonlahor at Villa?

Previously lauded as “unstoppable” by Premier League veteran and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, Agbonlahor will in some ways hope that Watkins can be stopped in order to protect his record at Villa.

While the Torquay-born ace is still 30 league goals and 36 goals in all competitions behind Agbonlahor with reference to his scoring record at Villa Park, a new contract could place the 27-year-old in good stead to rewrite history.

gabby-agbonlahor-villa

What could potentially place Watkins in Villa folklore is far beyond his ability to clinch new records, but the trajectory of where his goals could take Emery’s side.

European success could grant the Englishman a place in the club’s record books, with Villa’s history already rich with success at the highest level, peaking with their Champions League win in 1982.

You’d have to go back to that historic night to capture the last time that the Midlands side last had their hands on European silverware, however considering Emery’s managerial record in Europe, and Villa’s start to the campaign, this term could be a great opportunity to change expectations.

ollie-watkins-aston-villa-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-kane-levy

One thing that Agbonlahor was unable to do at Villa was to deliver silverware, which Watkins could have the ability to do in the near future when considering the development the Villans have shown over the past year.

Not many will ever overtake the legacy that the Birmingham-born veteran created for himself at his boyhood club, however Emery’s £75k-per-week talisman has all the tools to come close to the success that the former striker enjoyed at Villa Park.
