Aston Villa: Emery could already have Cash’s heir in "incredible" teen star

Aston Villa have unearthed some highly talented scholars in their history, with the recent sales of Jack Grealish and Cameron Archer allocating over £115m worth of profit alone.

The academy set up at Bodymoor Heath boasts a strong reputation, not just because of the colossal sale of Grealish, but for nurturing Premier League stars such as Gabriel Agbonlahor, Gary Cahill and Marc Albrighton to name a few.

While Unai Emery is brewing a storm of success upstairs, below the Spaniard are some exciting prospects waiting in the wings at Villa’s academy, with one name in line to be a potentially profitable graduate.

Who is Triston Rowe?

Signed from West Bromwich Albion’s academy in 2021, 17-year-old defender Triston Rowe has displayed all the indications that he could be the next big hit from the settings at Bodymoor Heath.

A Birmingham-born teen, Rowe has excelled since arriving at Villa, with his versatility in positions across the back line catching the eye of both the media and other clubs in the Premier League.

The Englishman was named as the Guardian’s Villa representative in the ‘Next Generation 2023’ list, where the publication lists one of the best prospects from each club in the top-flight to keep an eye on in the future.

The Guardian’s Ben Fisher described Rowe as a ‘tenacious defender’ who can play as either a right-back or centre-back, being a player with an ‘appetite to win duels’.

It’s not only the eyes of the media that the teenager is catching, with a report from the Evening Standard in 2022 claiming that Chelsea are admirers of the rising prospect.

The report stated that the Blues were ‘tracking’ the full-back, who has impressed those at Stamford Bridge due to his selection to play at a level that is years above his age group, as he represents the U21’s at Villa.

Could Triston Rowe break through at Villa?

The reported interest from Chelsea could signal another profitable talent in the wings at Villa Park, considering the Blues spent £20m to obtain Carney Chukwuemeka at just 18 years old last summer.

On the other hand, Rowe could take the route of the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Grealish in unleashing his talent in Birmingham for the benefit of the Villans and potentially Emery.

jack-grealish-aston-villa

The Spaniard is a firm admirer of current first-team right-back Matty Cash, waxing lyrical over the 26-year-old being a figure whose versatility has “helped” the squad “a lot”, areas of the defender's game that are mirrored by Rowe.

A source previously told BirminghamLive that the teenager is a player that is “proficient in everything he does”, and a talent that was dubbed an “incredible prospect” by the source with knowledge of the player.

Most notably, BirminghamLive were informed that the defender is a prospect “high on Villa’s agenda for progression”, signalling that he could soon be equipped to assist Emery in seeking to become the eventual heir to Cash after penning a professional contract this month.

The teenager has scored one goal and registered one assist in his 24 recorded appearances for Villa’s academy, suggesting that he has the attacking elements to his game vital for a modern-day full-back to embody, another notable trait in the Poland international’s skill set – having scored twice and contributed one assist in the league this term.

Described by the Guardian as a ‘mature character’, Rowe could be one of the bustling academy starlets to keep an eye on, with his trajectory assumed to be one that could one day usurp a favourite from Emery’s current achievers at Villa Park.

A mist to rival those from the mists of time

Surrey and Yorkshire are locked in an enthralling contest as Scarborough’s attempts to rival Barbados for sunshine last only a day

Paul Edwards at North Marine Road26-Jun-20181:34

Surrey hit with five-run penalty

ScorecardMist. Mist everywhere. Mist wreathing the sightscreens and the umpires’ coats. Mist masking the terraces around the ground and the refreshment stalls inside it. Mist crippling Surrey’s batsmen as they crept to 219 for 7 in reply to Yorkshire’s 342. Mist halting play nine times and for 25 minutes in all during the evening session as the umpires stood with the players and waited for it to clear. Mist turning Ollie Pope into a young ghost as he battled away for 34 plucky and unbeaten runs in conditions as alien as he can have known. Mist finally stopping play 14.5 overs before the close when more or less everyone gave it best and went home.Rarely can the weather have determined the nature of a day’s cricket as much as it did at North Marine Road this extraordinary Tuesday. The foghorn had sounded at six o’clock in the morning and even two hours later the cars were inching along Queens Parade past fret-gauzed hotels and pedestrians already armed with their copies of the The mist cleared and then swirled in again, invading every crevice and seeming to make an early start unlikely. But the lexis of religious observance is not forced at Scarborough. The faithful still make their pilgrimages on days of obligation and hotels are booked before the second Sunday in Advent. Those who have been coming here since the 1960s have seen it all and remember most of it. They were not dissuaded by the mist. Instead, they talked of these being ideal conditions for seamers like Tony Nicholson who used to rumble in and create havoc in the years when Yorkshire were winning the last three of their seven titles in a decade. This summer is not comparable to those and Steve Patterson’s seamers were made to battle for almost every breakthrough on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. After a morning session in which the mist lifted and 127 runs were scored, 38 of them by the home side’s tailenders, Surrey’s batsmen ground out the runs in a fashion which Yorkshiremen like Doug Padgett or Phil Sharpe might have admired. While Rory Burns profited from the attacking fields to hit 11 boundaries in a 46-ball fifty, the Surrey skipper’s colleagues were more restrained, especially after the mist returned soon after lunch. Before the break Mark Stoneman was caught at the wicket off Ben Coad for 9 and Scott Borthwick also taken by Jonny Tattersall when he skied a pull off Tim Bresnan. If those blows were not bad enough, the session brought disciplinary problems for Surrey. Following a Level One offence being committed by Jade Dernbach (not officially identified) when Jack Brooks and Patterson were extending their ninth-wicket stand to 61, Stoneman dissenting when given out. The two offences in the same game led to five runs being added to the home side’s total. The Scarborough crowd, ever vociferous, rather enjoyed that. The afternoon offered ideal bowling conditions and Yorkshire’s seamers made the most of them. Burns was caught behind off Coad for 59 after adding only five to his lunchtime score. Ryan Patel took nearly two hours over his 32 runs before he was fourth out, caught at slip by Harry Brook off Bresnan; 40 minutes later Theunis de Bruyn, after playing well for his 38, nicked Steve Patterson to TattersallThe murk increased in the evening session and play was stopped. Each hold up attracted barracking; each resumption brought applause. Will Jacks was leg before to Patterson for seven and Rikki Clarke caught and bowled by Bresnan for a duck. By the close Surrey could look back on a day in which they could have crumpled but did not do so. Pope’s innings was a magnificent demonstration of character and resolve in one so young. Yorkshire have the advantage but this match has a long road ahead of it. Let us hope we do not need fog lamps.

County professionals call for retention of two-divisional Championship

A survey by the Professional Cricketers Association strongly supports promotion and relegation in four-day cricket but on The Hundred there is not a word

David Hopps20-Jul-2018

Professional cricketers in England and Wales have come out overwhelmingly in favour of the retention of a two-division Championship with promotion and relegation in a powerful message to the ECB working group currently debating the future structure of the first-class game. The players’ message will quicken the belief that a move to a Conference system – variously advocated over the past few months by Yorkshire and Sussex in an attempt to protect the 18-team county structure – is gradually losing support.Players are even more adamant that they want to play the three county formats – four-day, 50-overs and Twenty 20 – in distinct blocks, even though they know that the ECB has indicated that this will be impossible once The Hundred becomes the centrepiece of the English summer. The Hundred, envisaged as English cricket’s groundbreaking challenge to the IPL and Big Bash – and worth an extra GBP £1.3m to the 18 first-class counties – has invited widespread debate, including ridicule from many established county supporters, as proposals about how it will work have gradually emerged.Disappointingly, the opinion of the players on The Hundred has yet to be surveyed on the grounds that it is outside the remit of the working party, chaired by the Leicestershire chief executive Wasim Khan.As far as The Hundred is concerned, the ECB is keeping decisions within an inner circle and allowing limited opportunity for opposition. With 89% of PCA playing members surveyed believing Test Match cricket is the most important format of the world game, those thoughts are supported in domestic male cricket too.The structure of the County Championship is one key area which is under review and feedback from players suggests 79% would like to keep promotion and relegation with members agreeing the current system maintains an intense standard of competition for both players and spectators.Players firmly believe there should be no four-day cricket played during The Hundred, therefore not compromising the Championship which a large majority of players still view as the most important. But if players can express preferences, turning those into a workable fixture list is much more problematic. As many as 93% of players have called for the county white-ball season to be played in blocks so they can avoid the chopping and changing that they believe causes a fall in standards. That led PCA chairman Daryl Mitchell to warn as the survey results were revealed that some switching between formats is inevitable.”With the desire to create blocks for different formats over recent years, it has meant that the Championship has been slightly marginalised with a huge proportion of games being played in April and September,” he said.”Players feel there is a need for more four-day cricket to be played in the middle of the summer for members and supporters to watch as well as to enable players to play in better conditions. This will therefore mean switching between formats is inevitable.”The survey, carried out to gain members thoughts on how male county cricket will be played from 2020, will feed into the ECB’s working group. Disappointingly, it was completed by only 240 of more than 350 regularly active professionals.PCA director of development and welfare Ian Thomas and former PCA Chairman and current personal development manager Mark Wallace are on the ECB’s working group to represent the views of current players. The PCA chief executive David Leatherdale is on leave of absence from his role due to stress with non-executive chairman Matthew Wheeler taking on Leatherdale’s responsibilities in the interim. The volume of T20 Blast games to be played from 2020 is also yet to be decided and 72% of players would like there to be either 14 group games per season as now, or a rise to 16 to allow for each county in North and South Group to play each other twice. As long as 50-over cricket remains the format played internationally, there is a strong feeling that domestic cricket should mirror the international level with only 10% of players wanting to move away from the current 50-over competition.PCA Chairman, Daryl Mitchell, said: “It was great to see a large number of PCA playing members respond to this survey and this is a vital piece of research to understand members’ views to further influence the PCA’s stance on the domestic structure.”I am pleased to see the results support views which we are always informally gathering through conversations around the county circuit. But Mitchell again sidestepped the issue of The Hundred, even though many players have expressed disillusionment or anger that the eight-team tournament will not be played in the accepted worldwide gold standard of T20.”2020 it is an exciting time for cricket in this country with the new competition bringing huge opportunities to our playing membership and with that it is imperative we get the domestic structure right,” he said.

Newcastle team news: Howe must unleash his "clinical" £46k-p/w weapon

Newcastle United are back in action tonight, as the Magpies host Borussia Dortmund at St James’ Park in the third fixture of the Champions League group stages.

Eddie Howe’s side were placed as far from the favourites when the lineup for Group E was revealed, with it being dubbed the 2023/24 edition of the ‘ Group of Death’ due to its challenges.

So far, the Geordies have secured a draw with AC Milan and an emphatic 4-1 win over Ligue 1 giants, Paris Saint-Germain, giving Howe’s squad added confidence going into tonight's big fixture.

What is the latest Newcastle team news against Dortmund?

After schooling PSG in their previous fixture in the Champions League, Newcastle will face another big challenge this evening when hosting the in-form Dortmund.

The German outfit remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga from their opening eight games, having won six and drawn two to put them in good stead to give the Magpies a battle.

Their start to the Champions League, however, has been a different story, having claimed just one point from a 0-0 draw against AC Milan, placing them at the bottom of Group E.

Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

Newcastle will hope to take the victory over Dortmund this evening, however they will have to be at their best to do so, with some squad selection decisions to be made by Howe.

The talk of the Magpies’ squad is Sandro Tonali’s pending punishment over betting offences, yet the midfielder is in contention to play against the well-oiled Bundesliga side, albeit with the likes of Sven Botman and Harvey Barnes still sidelined.

Starting as a substitute last weekend, Tonali was joined by Alexander Isak, who came off the bench despite nursing a slight knee problem, opening a potential door for another forward to lead the line from the start tonight.

Should Callum Wilson start against Dortmund?

Howe is lucky to have two impressive goalscorers to rotate between, and despite being in fine form, Callum Wilson could have an argument over his claim to start against Dortmund.

The Englishman, who was once lauded as “clinical” by journalist Chris Waugh, has already scored five goals in the Premier League this season, with his tally added to last time out against Crystal Palace.

Wilson has played just 27 minutes in the Champions League this term, and could be in good stead to claim his first start of the tournament, in a rotation up-front that could cause the opposition added problems.

The £46k-per-week talisman is no stranger to scoring goals, and could be the ideal inclusion into the squad should Howe opt to keep Isak as a substitute and rotate from the side that beat PSG.

In the league this term, the former Bournemouth sensation has a scoring frequency of just 68 minutes, averaging 1.5 shots on target per game, despite only averaging 42 minutes of play per game, via Sofascore.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

By fielding a scorer as clinical as Wilson, Howe could deal Dortmund additional blows by unleashing arguably his most prolific hitman on the defence, who have only conceded eight goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Newcastle will have to be at their best in the final third to break down Edin Terzic’s well-structured side, who will be desperate for a win against the Magpies at St James’ Park.
