Newcastle should launch Michail Antonio bid if West Ham sign Felipe Anderson

According to Italian media outlet Tuttomercatoweb, West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Lazio winger Felipe Anderson for a fee of €30m (around £26.5m), which could rise to €38m (around £33.5m) in add-ons, and Newcastle United should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Irons boss Manuel Pellegrini is clearly keen to significantly boost his newly-inherited squad to ensure they are challenging in the top-half of the Premier League next season, and he wants some marquee signings in at the London Stadium to help him achieve that.

The east London outfit appear to be closing in on the Brazilian, with Tuttomercato saying that his agent Kia Joorabchian, who also brokered the deal that took Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez to the club previously, has held positive meetings with Lazio and agreed a €3.5m-a-year (around £60,000-a-week) contract with West Ham.

The winger will provide some much-needed pace and skill on the flanks, and he will likely be competing with Michail Antonio, who earns £70,000-a-week according to the Daily Mail, for a spot in the starting XI on the right-hand side, although equally his arrival could throw the future of the 28-year-old former Southampton and Reading man into doubt.

Why should Newcastle be monitoring the situation?

Well, Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is determined to strengthen his squad this summer in order to ensure they build upon their impressive 10th-place finish on their return to the Premier League last season, and he may well want to add some more players to the core of his team with top flight experience.

Antonio would certainly bring that, along with plenty of power and pace, and he would provide some real quality to the Newcastle frontline – as well as some much-needed competition for the likes of Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu.

The England international is also versatile and capable of playing on either wing, as a wing-back and as a centre-forward, and that is something that should certainly appeal to Benitez and the club, who could see Jonjo Shelvey walk out and Chancel Mbemba revitalised if a £30m deal goes through this summer.

Revealed: 81% of Leeds fans want to sign Kodjia this summer

Leeds fans have been debating a possible summer swoop for Jonathan Kodjia, and the overwhelming majority of fans want to bring the towering striker to Elland Road.

Aston Villa could be forced to sell several of their prized assets this summer, with the club on the brink of administration.

Their most valuable player is certainly Jack Grealish, who looks destined for a big money move to the Premier League, but Leeds fans have been eyeing up a few potential bargains of their own.

Leeds won’t be the only Championship club sniffing around if Villa do indeed have a fire sale to stave off their financial troubles, but fans would love a swoop for Kodjia.

The Ivory Coast international scored 19 league goals in consecutive seasons with Bristol City and Villa, but had a torrid time with injuries last season, scoring just once in nine Championship starts.

The 28 year-old, valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt, certainly knows where the back of the net is, and will be hungry to prove himself again after such a poor spell with injuries.

Leeds fans are clearly hoping potential new manager Marcelo Bielsa takes a punt on the big number nine, as a whopping 81 per cent said they should swoop this summer.

Leeds fans planning for promotion after Bielsa appointment

Leeds fans have been reacting to this morning’s appointment of Marcelo Bielsa, and they’re already planning for promotion.

2017-18 was a long, miserable season for Leeds fans. What started out as a possible playoff push quickly spiralled out of control after Christmas, eventually costing two managers their jobs.

Paul Heckingbottom’s tenure was particularly infuriating for fans, as the ex-Barnsley’s lack of experience unfortunately shone through.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani certainly can’t be criticised for not learning from his mistakes though, as he has opted for one of the most experienced managers around this time.

The club officially unveiled Bielsa as their new manager on Friday morning, and fans are absolutely buzzing about the news.

After suffering through plenty of torrid performances and results in recent years, fans are now finally feeling optimistic about the future.

Bielsa is best known for his trademark 3-3-3-1 formation, which allows rapid transitions from defence to attack.

The enigmatic Argentine is also known to have a short fuse, and lasted just two days as Lazio manager back in 2016 before quitting.

Liverpool fans would love to sign Timo Werner after World Cup performances

Liverpool fans are enjoying Timo Werner’s performances at the World Cup for Germany and are eager to make a move to sign him from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old has started both of Germany’s games so far in the group stages, part of the side that netted a dramatic winner against Sweden on Saturday night that gives them a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages.

The attacker has yet to find the back of the net himself, and indeed missed a good chance against the Swedes, but has been a constant attacking outlet for his side throughout the tournament so far.

At club level he’s been a fierce goalscorer. Last season he netted 21 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig.

Liverpool fans have been impressed and believe that working under compatriot Jurgen Klopp could improve his game even more.

They took to Twitter in the wake of Saturday’s match to share their thoughts on his potential signing…

Opinion: Signing £36m-rated wing wizard would complete Liverpool’s best ever transfer window

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving watching Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold in action for England at the 2018 World Cup.

The Liverpool captain has been immense for the Three Lions helping his nation pick up victories in their opening group games against Tunisia and Panama. Henderson was rested against Belgium with Alexander-Arnold given a chance to impress, and the youngster grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Our punters are hoping their good form continues in the round of 16 fixture against Colombia.

Back on Merseyside, Naby Keita and Fabinho both officially became Liverpool players with Keita taking the historic number 8 jersey previously worn by club legend, Steven Gerrard. Our regulars are excited to see the duo in action but are disappointed with the latest set of reports. According to the Times, Liverpool haven’t reinstated their interest in Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.

Jurgen Klopp is still on the search for attacking reinforcements and should turn his attention to the Bundesliga. The perfect signing could be Bayer Leverkusen – Julian Brandt. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the German played just 19 minutes of football at the World Cup as Germany were knocked out at the group stages.

The 22-year-old is extremely quick and technically gifted. His versatility will appeal to Klopp as the youngster can play right across the forward line or as a number 10, providing much-needed cover to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. He netted nine goals and created three in the Bundesliga last season and the time is right to move to the Premier League.

Klopp has a reputation for developing young players into world-class stars and Brandt is approaching the prime age for development. The former Wolfsburg man should follow in the footsteps of Leroy Sane and move to England.

Liverpool fans, thoughts?

Why Emre Can’t for Liverpool

It’s never nice to single out players for personal attacks but with Brendan Rodgers facing the chop his methods and signings have to come under the microscope.

Against Aston Villa there was one player in particular that stood out for all the wrong reasons. The young German defender Emre Can looked unsure and out of place. He perfectly summed up his manager’s predicament.

It feels particularly harsh to criticise Can when his age is taken in consideration. At only 21 he has a long future ahead of him. This isn’t an exposé saying he’s a complete fraud, it’s pointing out he’s not the man Liverpool require right now.

Being seen as a utility player can be a burden. Emre only need ask his new teammate James Milner the problems that come when a manager thinks you can play anywhere. It makes a player an invaluable member of the squad without ever becoming a must-have in the team.

The young German can play at full back, defensive midfielder or as we saw on Saturday, a centre back. It’s usually best practise to allow a youngster to become an expert in one role before developing secondary and tertiary positions. Having stared out as a defensive midfielder this still looks to be his most natural role. Unfortunately it isn’t one he’s made his own for Liverpool.

He’s had over 30 games for the Anfield club and he finds himself in development purgatory. Fans of the Merseyside team can’t defend his age when they’ve written off Raheem Sterling, who is a year younger. In this time he could have been a figurehead in phase two of Brendan’s plans. After reaching the Champions League but requiring subtle reshaping with the loss of star man Luis Suarez, the opportunity was available to many to become necessities.

The Aston Villa performance underlined that Can is going to come up short. As a player familiar with deep midfield roles distribution should be the strongest element to his game, however, on Saturday he made erratic clearances and poor judgements in this area. If he isn’t a natural centre back certain deficiencies for the role can be forgiven, but if his bread and butter attributes are failing then his long term role in the team has to be questioned.

Lucas Leiva, even with Sturridge bagging two goals, was Liverpool’s best player on Saturday. He is a player most were ready to see the back of and playing in a position the promising young German international should have laid claim to by now.

Instead he still requires nurturing and development in a team that is desperate at the moment. Rodgers doesn’t have the luxury to have pet projects during this time. He needs instant results. It’s feasible Emre can’t be accommodated.

And if Brendan does go, a new manager may see no reason to tolerate a utility man that lacks a strong area.

Liverpool take the lead at Man City, Twitter reacts

Liverpool have struggled to get going under new boss Jurgen Klopp, drawing most games and rarely looking much of a threat against anyone.

So many people had Manchester City down as favourites in this evening’s clash at the Etihad Stadium.

But Liverpool started brightly and were rewarded in the 8th minute as high pressing led to Philippe Coutinho dispossessing Sagna in the final third, playing in Roberto Firmino, who’s cross was guided past Joe Hart by City defender Mangala.

It was the opening goal that Liverpool fully deserved after a bright start by Klopp’s men, with the Etihad crowed silenced.

And as expected, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to celebrate their side taking the lead against Pellegrini’s men. Most of their delight was aimed at Raheem Sterling, but some were also aimed at poor ol’ Mangala, who had his head in his hands after his calamitous error.

Here’s a selection of the best tweets following the opening goal…

Five key battles that will decide Manchester City vs Liverpool

We’ve been treated to a heavyweight clash almost every weekend in the Premier League this season and the coming one is no different.

Inspiring flashbacks to their sensational title race during the 2013/14 season, Manchester City play hosts to Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday – kickoff at 5.30pm.

There may be nine places and nine points separating the Reds from their table-topping opponents, but the Anfield outfit actually boast the upper hand in terms of recent encounters; winning three and drawing one of their last six against the Citizens.

The Reds still carry that air of unpredictability under new manager Jurgen Klopp, but will it be enough to stop a City side currently averaging over three goals per match at the Etihad?

As is often the case which such high-quality encounters, it could well come down to who dominates the individual battles. With that in mind, here are FIVE Football Fancast believe could decide the match.

SERGIO AGUERO VS DEJAN LOVREN

With Mamadou Sakho sidelined until January due to a knee injury, £20million flop Dejan Lovren has a fantastic chance to prove himself under the new regime at Liverpool.

Every slate has been wiped clean by Jurgen Klopp, which is great news for the Croatian international considering the negativity surrounding his first twelve months at Anfield.

That being said, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero represents the biggest test in the Premier League for any given centre-back, the only striker in the divison unanimously viewed as ‘world-class’ with a potent haul of 84 goals in 128 league outings for City under his belt – including six strikes this season.

He’s been out of action since scoring five past Newcastle in October with a hamstring injury but looks set to be rushed back into Manuel Pellegrini’s starting line-up as understudy Wilfried Bony takes his place on the physio table.

That suggests the Argentina international will be a little rusty and probably won’t last the full ninety minutes. Once again, great news for Lovren – but a half-fit Aguero is still deadlier than the vast majority of the strikers in world football.

Philippe Coutinho vs Fernando

Just when Philippe Coutinho’s early season had begun to tail off, the Brazil international hits back with three goals in his last two Premier League appearances – including a match-winning brace against reigning champions Chelsea.

The 23-year-old is still a rather inconsistent presence, often rendering his penchant for long-range shooting frustratingly wasteful. But the attacking midfielder has more than proved that he can punish even the Premier League’s best goalkeepers from distance when in top form, so it’s imperative Manchester City don’t wait to find out what kind of mood he’s in.

Although shared between deep midfield partner Fernandinho, the task of stopping Coutinho will predominantly fall to Fernando.

The Brazilian isn’t the most exceptional holding player the world has ever seen but he does his job well in the City midfield, this season averaging 2.5 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per match whilst committing less than one foul per game.

The 28-year-old’s ranging limbs eat up the kind of space Coutinho craves, in that No.10 pocket between midfield and attack, so the Liverpool star may have to drift into wider positions to get a foothold in the match.

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE VS VINCENT KOMPANY

Two beastly Belgians of incredible physicality, we could see quite the contest between Christian Benteke and Vincent Kompany on Saturday.

Benteke’s performed well for Liverpool since his £32.5million arrival to find four goals in nine Premier League appearances, especially considering he’s suffered a few injury problems and is now working under a different manager than the one who signed him in the summer.

At 6 foot 3, he offers the Reds something a little different in attack and arguably something a little more in line with Klopp’s ethos, as an old-fashioned centre-forward and focal point similar to Robert Lewandowski.

But that physical threat, boasting power, pace and leap in almost equal measure, could be cancelled out by City skipper Vincent Kompany at the Etihad, who measures in an inch taller and always aggressively asserts his athleticism on the opposition.

It may be somewhat less spiteful than Diego Costa and Martin Skrtel’s heated exchange a few weeks ago, but this battle has the potential to be equally entertaining in its ferociousness.

Kompany suffered a slight calf strain on international duty, however, which could be just enough to give Benteke the edge.

RAHEEM STERLING VS NATHANIEL CLYNE

One can only imagine the reception Raheem Sterling will receive on Saturday. Although the Etihad Stadium represents a safe surrounding, jeers from the away end may seem deafening to a 20-year-old experiencing the role of pantomime villain for the first time.

Nonetheless, not buckling under pressure is part of the reason Manchester City invested almost £50million in the England international during the summer and he’s already demonstrated his worth to Manuel Pellegrini’s side, with four goals and one assist in eleven Premier League appearances.

Perhaps more important than his output is the directness, penetration and pace Sterling offers from the left, speeding up City’s attack immeasurably when compared to some of their displays last season.

That is what Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne might struggle with most at the Etihad. The England defender has received glowing reviews since joining his new club during the summer, providing a delicate balance between defence and attack whilst averaging 3.5 tackles per match, but Sterling’s speed, especially on the ball, would trouble most defenders in world football.

Although Jurgen Klopp likes his full-backs to push forward, Clyne must ensure he doesn’t leave his compatriot with a free run down the wing. Should Sterling overcome the occasion, he’ll relish the chance to punish his former club.

LUCAS LEIVA VS THE WORLD

It’s almost hipster to rave about Lucas Leiva’s unsung importance to the Liverpool midfield, but it’s impossible to dispute his influence has continually grown since the start of last season and especially under Jurgen Klopp.

The tough-tackling Brazilian has started every league fixture since the German took the Anfield helm and is becoming increasingly vital in defensive midfield – an area Klopp likes to cram as much as possible to create room for sweeping counter-attacks out wide.

No doubt, Leiva has been up there with the Premier League’s best in terms of play-breaking this term, averaging a whopping 5.5 tackles, 1.8 successful aerial duels and 2 interceptions per match.

But City’s attacking midfield is composed essentially of three No.10s in Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Yaya Toure – whilst Fernandinho likes to venture forward from deeper positions and David Silva could also feature if his ankle injury is fully healed – and all will look to find space just behind Sergio Aguero.

That will put a lot of pressure on Leiva to perform at his very best. But James Milner and Emre Can have both done a fantastic job of providing close support to the 28-year-old thus far under Klopp.

Arsenal out already, Chelsea to struggle, Man City happy… Twitter reacts to UCL last 16 draw

Well, well, well… the Champions League last 16 draw is always a highlight for football fans, even if your side isn’t involved. And this season has truly delivered, with the English teams included having been handed a mixed bag:

Paris St-Germain v Chelsea

Arsenal v Barcelona

Dynamo Kiev v Manchester City

Gent v Wolfsburg

AS Roma v Real Madrid

Juventus v Bayern Munich

PSV Eindhoven v Atletico Madrid

Benfica v Zenit

Wow. A hard task for Arsenal then, with defending European champions Barcelona on their way to north London. Arsenal have been eliminated at the last 16 stage each year since 2011… and this year doesn’t look to be likely to get any better. Chelsea are once again due to take on Paris Saint-Germain in a game already being dubbed ‘El Cashico’, while Manchester City will be thrilled with Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev having come out of the hat.

Five reasons Arsenal should sign this man to fix a long-term problem

Arsenal’s situation in defensive midfield has been a problem for Arsene Wenger for several years now, so we are fully expecting the manager to finally address the problems in this window.

Injuries have struck the Gunners badly once more and it seems as though they need reinforcements going into the second half of the season, as they face somewhat of a challenging fixture list with Champions League and Premier League clashes coming up in February.

As ever, several targets have been linked, but none are better than signing Grzegorz Krychowiak. The powerful central midfield man has proved himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe over the last few seasons and he must be destined for a big move in the next couple of years.

If Arsenal are to take this golden opportunity for the title, Wenger cannot afford to do his customary January dithering and he must make sure he is decisive to help maintain the quality of squad that can win on several fronts.

Here are FIVE reasons Krychowiak would be a great signing…

Coq up…

Coquelin’s form across the last 12 months has been a pleasant revelation for many Arsenal fans, but there are still elements of the fan base that don’t believe he is up to the standards of the club.

Thankfully, signing this Sevilla man could be a huge assistance to the breakthrough player of last season and would allow Wenger the option to play a more defensive system with the two of them covering.

Old Boys club

Flamini and Arteta are both likely to be on their respective bikes come the end of the season and this leaves a gaping hole in the Arsenal midfield ranks.

Both of the veterans might have largely been supporting roles over the last season or two, but their is no doubt that the squad will need extra depth to compensate for the loss of two wise heads, well, maybe not Flamini.

Golden Opportunity

As everyone seems to be saying, Arsenal will never have a better opportunity to win the title than this season.

Wenger must seize this window to make sure his side take full advantage of their chance, which has largely come about from the failings of the other big sides in the league, and make sure they reward Mesut Ozil’s wonderful form with a trophy.

Arsene’s time is up..

Seeing as no one seems to be getting any younger (funny that), Wenger is heading towards the end of his time in management and he really needs to seize his last few seasons.

If Arsenal are going to line-up a replacement, Arsene will want to leave them with the best possible squad and adding class like Krychowiak would be a big step towards that.

From a more personal stand point, Wenger will want to add extra numbers to help him achieve his first PL title in over a decade.

Ball Retention

Football – England v Poland – 2014 World Cup Qualifying European Zone – Group H – Wembley Stadium, London, England – 15/10/13England’s Leighton Baines in action with Poland’s Grzegorz KrychowiakMandatory Credit: Action Images / Andrew CouldridgeLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Krychowiak, much like many Arsenal players, is a master at keeping hold of possession and would be a good platform to pass over playmaking responsibilities to the more gifted players in the squad.

With a pass completion of 84%, the big Pole will happily rotate possession to Ozil, Ramsey or Cazorla rather than risk losing the ball himself.
