Diana Edulji, the former India women captain who is part of the two-member Committee of Administrators (CoA), has said the CoA will not interfere in the controversy surrounding Mithali Raj’s omission from India’s side for their Women’s World T20 semi-final against England last week. Raj, India’s senior-most player and their highest run-getter in the T20 format, was left out despite being passed fit – she had missed India’s last group match against Australia with a knee injury – and scoring fifties in her last two innings. India went on to lose the semi-final by eight wickets after collapsing from 89 for 2 to 112 all out.Edulji said the CoA, appointed to supervise the BCCI by India’s Supreme Court, could not burden itself with cricketing decisions. However, she added that the CoA would address the concerns of any players if they were to approach the panel.Earlier on Monday, Raj, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and team manager Trupti Bhattacharya had separate meetings with Rahul Johri, the BCCI chief executive officer, and Saba Karim, the BCCI’s general manager cricket operations. After meeting India coach Ramesh Powar later in the week, Johri and Karim are likely to prepare a report that they will submit to the CoA.The decision to leave Raj out of the semi-final against England was taken by the team management comprising Harmanpreet, Powar, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and selector Sudha Shah after they watched the first semi-final between Australia and West Indies. They agreed to stick with the same combination that had beaten Australia convincingly, which meant the allrounder Anuja Patil kept her place in the XI ahead of Raj. Edulji said it wasn’t the business of the CoA to question the team management’s decisions. “Because see what are the conditions, what is the wicket playing like, what is the dew factor, what is the strength of the opposition – all that how can CoA, sitting in India, decide the playing XI whether it is right or wrong.”Edulji also rubbished speculation in India’s women’s cricketing circles that she was taking Harmanpreet’s side in the issue, and pointed to the role she had played in bringing both Raj and Harmanpreet to the Railways team in their formative years. She said she had also been instrumental in Raj taking over the Railways captaincy, which paved her way towards becoming India captain.”I definitely like Harman’s game. I like the way she plays,” Edulji said. “Because I was a hitter myself I like people who can clear the boundaries. She changed the complexion of women’s cricket after that knock in England (in the World Cup semi-final against Australia). Otherwise there is nothing special that I will go out of my way (to support Harmanpreet). In fact, we hardly talk.”Edulji said she was not aware of any differences between Raj and Harmanpreet or between any other players in the team. “If there are differences off the field, it should not come out on the field,” she said. “Once you cross the boundary line, you are playing for the country.”

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Christchurch27-Dec-2018Outgoing batting coach Thilan Samaraweera was disappointed at the manner in which Sri Lanka’s middle order folded, exposing tail-enders to Trent Boult’s high-quality swing bowling on day two at Hagley Oval.But as he prepares to leave his post to make way for new batting coach Jon Lewis, he also reflected on what he felt was a moderately successful 13 months in the role. Samaraweera is essentially being demoted to the High Performance staff, having been the national team’s batting coach since November last year. The decision to replace him came after Sri Lanka’s 0-3 Test series result against England last month. But despite the losses, Samaraweera says, there are numbers which suggest that under him the Sri Lanka top order has made significant gains.”I think if people think only about winning or losing, then I’m in trouble,” he said. “But I feel this group is going in the right direction, because I can show stats on how we’ve improved one-day cricket, T20s and Tests. Kusal Mendis has made close to 1000 Test runs in the year. Nobody knows that. Dimuth Karunaratne is going really well. Angelo Mathews has been brilliant this year. Thisara Perera’s batting has been good in one-day cricket as well.””I don’t know. People took that decision [to replace me], and that’s up to them. Samaraweera’s claims do stand up to scrutiny. Mendis will likely finish as the year’s second-highest scorer in Tests, with 956 runs at an average of 45.52. That average is second only to that of the year’s best Test batsman Virat Kohli, from among the present top-five run-scorers in 2018*. Karunaratne, meanwhile, is the most prolific opener this year, and currently sits at sixth on the overall list, with 743 runs at an average of 49.53. Mathews, meanwhile, has scores of 83, 120 not out and 33 not out from the ongoing series against New Zealand.Critics of Samaraweera may also point out, however, that Mendis had also experienced a haunting loss of one-day form through the course of this year, failing to reach fifty in 13 consecutive innings and registering five ducks in that time. Karunaratne’s rise had begun before Samaraweera arrived on the scene – the opener having made 1000 Test runs in 2017. The coach himself admits that on the one-day front, Sri Lanka’s batsmen have not produced big innings on his watch.Samaraweera was pleased, however, that Mathews has seemingly arrested a slide toward mediocrity in Test cricket. He had averaged over 70 in 2013 and 2014, before failing to average 30 in 2016 and 2017. Despite modest returns in the mid-year series against West Indies and South Africa, Mathews’ Test batting may have undergone something of a revival late in the year. He has been dismissed for less than 50 only three times in his previous nine Test innings.”In the last year, I challenged Angelo and he responded really well. In 2013 and 2014 he had a tremendous two years, and then after that he went a little bit behind in 2016 and 17. I had an honest chat with him a couple of times and he responded really well. You have to give credit to him. He showed guts in Wellington. I’ve never seen him batting like that – he took so many bouncers to his body. Today also he batted really well.”On the collapse at the start of day two in Christchurch, Samaraweera rued the quick dismissals of Roshen Silva and Niroshan Dickwella – both caught at third slip. With Boult bowling as sublimely as that, the tail had no chance, Samaraweera said.”Our thinking was to get through the first hour, hour-and-a-half,” Samaraweera said. “It was overcast conditions, and when the sun comes out it becomes easier to bat. But then we lost our first two batters in the first 20 minutes, and after that it’s very difficult to handle those new-ball bowlers.”At the moment we are way behind the game, but after one over tomorrow the new ball will be due. We have to take two or three wickets early and then at least we can stay in the game. It’ll depend on the first hour, how we use the new ball.”

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Kompany bemoaned his side's inability to handle set pieces, saying:

"It’s two set plays. You can’t expect at this level to dominate every game, we’ve got to be realistic. The teams we’re facing have got players who can build up some momentum, that’s normal, but there’s not much I need to say about the overall defending or the attacking play, it’s more about both boxes today. We get done on two set plays."

"The moments we have, we have a few clear moments where we’re not able to finalise it and we get done in both boxes. That’s what you’re left to discuss."

Despite trying to emulate their style of football that brought success in the Championship last campaign, the Clarets continue to ship goals with regularity and have conceded more goals than everyone in the Premier League, bar Sheffield United, which will need to improve if they have designs on keeping hold of their league status.

Acquiring reinforcements in January could help Kompany's case at Turf Moor and he is now reportedly eyeing up a swoop for a new midfielder.

The report claims that Gueye will be allowed to leave Marseille as Gennaro Gattuso doesn't fancy the 24-year-old and English clubs have been alerted to his potential availability in January, which could lead to a £15 million offer from Burnley in January.

Described as a powerfully built player in a separate piece by reporter John Hutchinson, Gueye has made just two appearances in the French top flight this term and looks to be firmly out of the picture at the Orange Velodrome (Gueye statistics – Transfermarkt).

Samit Patel, the English left-arm spinner, fired one into Sohail Akhtar’s pads and it was flicked away. Two runs were taken. But there was a hold-up immediately after as umpires Richard Illingworth and Rashid Riaz conferred, and then announced five additional runs for Lahore.All by the law. Ronchi, the Islamabad wicketkeeper, had discarded one of his gloves, and the ball, as it came back in from the deep square-leg region, hit the piece of equipment. Patel’s bowling figures weren’t affected, and Akhtar didn’t get any extra runs, but Lahore were richer by five runs. Leeds United may be without a win in their last two Championship fixtures but this season has been a great deal more positive than the last one at Elland Road.

The reigns of Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa are now long behind them but Daniel Farke has engineered a renewed attitude in this part of Yorkshire.

Leeds are now currently third in the table and few would bet against them returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Some intent in the January transfer window wouldn't go amiss either, with an exciting winger being lined up to help push their promotion bid.

Aged 25, an asking price has reportedly been set for the winger of around €14m (£13m). That would be a costly transfer for a side in the second tier of English football, although not out of the realms of possibility.

How Akturkoglu compares to Raphinha

Such a move for the young Turk would be an exciting one. You only need to look at the attacker's numbers this season for Galatasaray to understand why.

So far this term, the 26-cap Turkey international has found the net on seven occasions and also posted eight assists across 27 outings in all competitions.

It's interesting to note that two of those strikes came in the Champions League group stages where Akturkoglu bagged in both clashes against Manchester United. Impressive work indeed.

A left winger by trade, the Galatasaray star is also capable of playing on the right-hand side of attack and shares similarities with Raphinha.

The Brazilian was a wonderful asset to Leeds in the Premier League before a mega £55m move to Barcelona came calling in 2022. During his time with Leeds, the winger was a goal-scoring and creative asset, just as Akturkoglu could prove to be if he moves to Elland Road.

Across 67 matches for the Yorkshire side, Raphinha scored on 17 occasions and registered 12 assists as he proved his class at the highest level in England.

Previously described as “unstoppable” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, it's more than just goals and assists that compare the two players.

During Raphinha's last term in England, he produced 1.9 key passes per game in a team that didn't exactly enjoy the most possession. Akturkoglu on the other hand, has created 2.9 this season in the Turkish Super Lig.

They also both work hard in defensive phases, the Turkish superstar making 0.8 tackles per game and Raphinha making 1.5 during his final season at Leeds.

The latter is by far a greater talent but it's hard to ignore the qualities that Leeds' new target has at his disposal. Perhaps a move to England could well see him replicate the club's former Brazilian.
