Ireland captain suggests Foakes' stumping of Balbirnie should have been called dead ball

William Porterfield claims games could end up lasting “15 hours” if all keepers started following Ben Foakes’ lead

Brilliant piece of wicketkeeping or pushing the Laws of the game? Ben Foakes’ stumping of Andy Balbirnie in Friday’s ODI between Ireland and England left many praising his smart glovework, but Ireland’s captain, William Porterfield, was less impressed and afterwards suggested the ball was “pretty much dead”.The issue of a wicketkeeper waiting behind the stumps for the merest hint of a batsman lifting his foot is not quite as contentious as running out a batsman backing up – and Porterfield declined to make a comparison with Mankad dismissals – but similar questions were asked in some quarters about the legitimacy of such stumpings by stealth.Porterfield was more concerned about the tactic delaying play, if wicketkeepers regularly sought to wait for a batsman to accidentally leave his ground, and suggested games could end up lasting “15 hours” .”You can say it was great wicketkeeping or you can say it’s a bit of a grey area of ‘when is the ball dead?'” Porterfield said. “The ball was pretty much dead. The batsman wasn’t going anywhere or over-balanced. The keeper has waited for three or four seconds. If we do that all day, it’s going be a pretty long game. How long do you wait? We’ll be playing 15-hour games if you wait that long.”On the subject of whether it was similar to Mankading a batsman at the non-striker’s end – recently (and controversially) employed by R Ashwin when running out Jos Buttler in the IPL – Porterfield suggested this was a different matter.”He [Balbirnie] was probably more unhappy that he did lift his foot a little bit as he wasn’t going anywhere or trying to do anything,” he said. “The ball is pretty much dead like. On another day, that ball is probably [thrown by Foakes] into the covers.”Foakes himself saw the dismissal as simply going about his normal business. “When it’s a sweep you think they might fall over and I just saw he lifted his foot and nicked [the bails] off,” he said.

Celtic could sign Rodgers’ next Vardy in late swoop for 6ft 1 gem

There's no two ways about it, Scottish champions Celtic have simply not got the best out of star man Kyogo Furuhashi this season, with the Japanese marksman seemingly suffering following the departure of former boss Ange Postecoglou over the summer.

After previously netting 54 goals in just 83 games under the man who brought him to Glasgow on a £4.6m deal in 2021, the 29-year-old has since scored 'just' 11 times in 30 appearances following Brendan Rodgers' arrival in the dugout.

While hardly a dismal return, that haul of eight Premiership goals is far from the former Vissel Kobe man's return of 27 in the league last season, having now netted just twice in his last nine top-flight outings for the Old Firm giants.

With Rodgers insisting last month that he hasn't asked anything different of the diminutive marksman to what Postecoglou had previously, the question remains as to why the £19k-per-week speedster is not firing on all cylinders at present.

Those concerns have only been heightened by the lack of depth in the striking department following Oh Hyeon-gyu's departure to represent his country at the Asian Cup, with the South Korean star the only other senior centre-forward option behind Kyogo in the Hoops' squad.

That has ensured that signing a new number nine has become something of a priority before the end of the window, with one promising talent seemingly catching the eye of those at Parkhead.

Celtic want to sign the next Jamie Vardy

According to Sky Sports journalist, Anthony Joseph, the Glasgow outfit are now "focussing efforts" on signing a new left-back and striker with just a week left in the window, having already snapped up Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna on a £3m deal.

One potential attacking target that the club may have their eye on is Bristol City's Tommy Conway, with a report from Football Insider last week naming Celtic among the list of suitors who are 'tracking' the England-born, Scotland U21 international.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

The 21-year-old – who is also on the radar of Rangers – has just 18 months left on his current deal at Ashton Gate, thus ensuring that the Robins may be forced to cash in in the near future, rather than letting his transfer value diminish.

If the 6 foot 1 hitman is the subject of a late approach from the league leaders, he could well be Rodgers' next Jamie Vardy, having previously been likened to the Leicester City hero by former Bristol boss, Nigel Pearson.

How Tommy Conway compares to Jamie Vardy

As Conway himself admitted, he is a striker who typically looks to "go in behind" and stretch opposition defences, with that perhaps the reason – as well as his goalscoring capabilities – that Pearson "compares" the youngster to Vardy.

That is certainly an intriguing comparison and one that will have caught the eye of Rodgers, with the Northern Irishman having enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Vardy during his time in charge of Leicester, having ended his first spell with Celtic to join the Foxes in 2019.

In 157 games working under the one-time Liverpool boss, the experienced striker scored a remarkable 70 goals and contributed a further 30 assists, with the Midlands side notably going on to claim a first FA Cup triumph in 2021.

A player who evidently slotted in smoothly to Rodgers' way of playing – with the current Celtic boss describing him as an "icon" – Vardy thrived as the main man in attack at the King Power Stadium, with perhaps young Conway able to do the same at Celtic Park.

The Hoops were previously linked with an interest in the impressive forward.

ByDan Emery Jan 25, 2024

There had been hopes that Kyogo could be a "younger, faster" version of Vardy for Rodgers to work with – according to pundit Frank McAvennie – yet amid the 5 foot 7 dynamo's recent woes, Conway could threaten his place in the side if a deal is to be agreed.

As Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie stated back in 2022, the Taunton-born hotshot has been "on absolute flames" in the Championship of late, with it no surprise that he is generating interest from a raft of elite clubs.

Tommy Conway's season in numbers

Despite being hampered by injury at times this season, Conway has chalked up a respectable haul of eight goals in 23 games in all competitions, including scoring six goals in 21 Championship appearances.

The Bristol academy graduate has particularly caught the eye this month, however, as a result of his displays in the FA Cup, scoring two goals in as many games against Premier League highflyers, West Ham United, to send his side into the Fourth Round of the competition.

The former Bath City loanee first helped to send the tie to a replay after lashing in a stunning equaliser at the London Stadium, bursting in behind the Hammers' defence before firing home in a manner that Vardy himself would no doubt be proud of.

That was then followed up by what proved to be the decisive goal in a 1-0 win on home soil for the Championship side, Conway pouncing on a defensive mistake from the visitors before passing into an empty net from the angle.

The intelligence to pounce on that error as well as having the sharpness to take the opportunity will again have only served to corroborate those comparisons to Vardy, with former Leicester City coach Craig Shakespeare describing the Premier League winner as a "pest" due to his movement in the final third.

Rodgers will be fully aware just what a 'pest' Vardy truly was in his pomp, hence the wisdom in snapping up his heir apparent to provide genuine competition to Kyogo at Parkhead.

Rohit Sharma feels IPL will help players hit the ground running at World Cup

The Mumbai Indians captain also said the team was open to resting Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya if needed, but the players preferred to keep playing

With the World Cup starting on May 30, 18 days after the IPL final, workload management has been a major talking point throughout the season. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma reckons that the demands of the IPL will help players build towards the showpiece event in England and Wales, rather than lead to burnout.Rohit cited the example of India winning the Champions Trophy in June 2013, which started about ten days after the end of the IPL that year. Rohit was in top form across both tournaments, following up his 538 runs in 19 innings for Mumbai Indians in their maiden run to the IPL title with 177 runs in five innings in the UK, helping India secure that title as well.”Once the IPL started, we knew this was the window – March and April or April and May – because of the elections,” Rohit said. “In 2013, we played the IPL and went on to play the Champions Trophy and in fact we went on to win the Champions Trophy. I feel the guys who play IPL and go play big tournaments right after that, they’re very much in touch with their game.”Rohit also said that Mumbai were open to resting key India players – fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and allrounder Hardik Pandya, who had just recovered from a back injury ahead of the IPL – at various points during the league, but the players opted against it and were instead keen to keep playing.Bumrah and Hardik are among six players to have featured in all of Mumbai’s 15 games so far this season. While Bumrah is their leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets in 15 matches at an economy rate of 6.84, Hardik found form – both with bat and ball – after being sidelined from the India side with multiple injuries and off-field troubles earlier this year.Hardik had missed India’s most recent ODI series against Australia, but hit the ground running this IPL. He has been Mumbai’s premier power-hitter, making 386 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 193. And he has smashed 28 sixes – only Kolkata Knight Riders’ Andre Russell (52) and Kings XI Punjab’s Chris Gayle (34) have hit more sixes this season. He has elevated his batting to an all-new plane, so much so that he can now hit yorkers – or near-yorkers – for sixes by deploying the helicopter shot.Hardik has also been at it with the ball and in the field, claiming 14 wickets and taking 11 catches.”We spoke at the start of the tournament that we will assess each one of players, see where they are at and what they feel about their bodies,” Rohit said. “It’s more an individual thing than [what] we decide for them.”In the case of Jasprit, he’s someone who likes to play games to make sure he’s in good rhythm. At the start of the tournament, we spoke that at any given stage if he feels he needs to rest, we were open to that. But our physios and trainers have monitored him quite well and there was constant feedback from Jasprit as well about he’s feeling. So far, we haven’t had issues with Jasprit and Hardik, so we continued to play them.”Before the IPL if they weren’t in great form, this is the time they can get back to form. Hardik is the best example. Before the IPL, he didn’t have a good time, was injured, and missed a few games as well. But he has been tremendous for us – both in batting and bowling. So, yeah it’s [IPL’s] a big tournament and you can judge yourself where you’re at before a big tournament like the World Cup.”

Mitchell Marsh shines with bat and ball as Australia A remain undefeated

A classy all-round display from Mitchell Marsh helped Australia A to a comfortable win over Gloucestershire to remain undefeated on their tour of England.Marsh took three wickets and peeled off an unbeaten half-century as Australia A cruised to Gloucestershire’s underwhelming target with 47 balls to spare.Marsh has been working on his bowling with Western Australia and Australia A bowling coach Kade Harvey and it has been paid dividends. “At times when I try and bowl a little bit too fast, I jump in and have to bowl around myself, and I lose my control which certainly in one-day cricket it’s what I’m in the team for at any level,” he said. “I’m continually working on stuff. I feel like the ball is coming out of my hand really well at the moment. So hopefully that can continue.”Australia A’s chase got off to another rollicking start thanks once again to Matthew Wade. Following back-to-back centuries against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, Wade clubbed 41 from 20 balls including three fours and four sixes. Will Pucovski was promoted to open alongside Wade and the pair’s 50-run stand came up inside six overs before Wade fell to Chris Liddle.Pucovski made a composed 51 and shared a 101-run third-wicket partnership with Peter Handscomb who top scored with 57. Liddle also picked up both Handscomb and Travis Head.Marsh entered with 92 runs still required and finished the job with ease. He hit five sixes in his unbeaten 51-ball 53 to help guide the side home. This followed his three-wicket haul earlier in the day. Marsh took the opening wicket of the morning and then returned to make the key breakthrough picking George Hankins after a 142-run stand with James Bracey.Hankins made 74 while Bracey top-scored with 83, but the innings fell away dramatically after Bracey’s dismissal in the 39th over. Gloucestershire scored just 52 runs in the last 12 overs. Marsh also nabbed skipper Jack Taylor and ran out Tom Price on the last ball of the innings.Josh Hazlewood bowled a impressively miserly spell taking 1 for 24 from 10 overs which included four maidens.

Arsenal star who cost nothing is now worth more than Phil Foden

Arsenal are a team on the up at the moment; of that, there can be no doubt.

Gone are the days of finishing eighth in the Premier League and meekly rolling over when playing the rest of the Big Six.

The Gunners, under the management of Mikel Arteta, have reestablished themselves among the country's biggest clubs, and while they might still fall short of winning the league in the face of the Manchester City juggernaut, they will get close.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

This resurgence has been in large part thanks to some brilliant recruitment and the promotion of some incredibly talented youngsters, with one who, above all others, has come to symbolise this modern Arsenal side, a player who did not cost the club a penny and is now worth more than Phil Foden.

A diamond in the rough

A number of promising youth products have made the leap from Hale End to the first team in recent seasons, such as Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, and even Ethan Nwaneri, who got the shortest of run-outs early on last season.

However, when it comes to a youngster emblematic of Arsenal's resurgence in recent years, there is only one man it can be: Bukayo Saka.

The charismatic and skillful Gunners gem burst onto the scene during Unai Emery's first season in charge, making his debut off the bench in a Europa League game away to Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava, before making his first start against Qarabag FK a couple of weeks later.

He would be given his first run-out in the Premier League against Fulham in January of the same season, but with only seven minutes to play, he would have to wait another season for his full league debut.

That came against Aston Villa in September 2019, and while he was not able to score or assist in that game, he did set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's equaliser at Old Trafford in the following match – talk about making a case for yourself.

It would be fair to describe Arsenal as an incredibly tumultuous place when the Hale End star was breaking through, with managerial changes, fan discontent, and a general feeling that the club was up a creek without a paddle.

This instability is best demonstrated by Saka being the only player still at the club who started against Villa in September 2019. Moreover, the only players on the bench who are still plying their trade in N5 are Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli.

Ultimately, it is rather surprising that the Ealing-born prospect even survived all the upheaval at the club, although he did more than just that; he thrived.

Saka's unstoppable rise

It was in the 2020/21 season that the Gunners' 'little chili' truly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the country, with Arteta now playing him more as a wide midfielder or winger instead of as a left-back he was able to impress fans and terrify defences with his quick feet and football IQ, which U23 scout Antonio Mango described as being at the "highest level".

In all, the "creative genius", as he was dubbed by Mango, has now played 209 games for the North Londoners, in which he has scored 49 goals and provided 53 assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement every 2.04 games since his debut at just 17 years old.

While a return like that is impressive just in and of itself, it is made even more impressive by the fact that he has played 21 games at left-back, and only played as an out-and-out winger for 87 games of his Arsenal career.

However, he has not just been a revelation for the Gunners. Alongside his exploits at club level, the "future icon", as he was dubbed by talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has been electric for the English national team, and has already become one of the most important players in the squad.

In his 32 senior caps, the 22-year-old has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists, meaning he is providing a goal involvement every 1.68 matches for the Three Lions, a truly remarkable record for someone so young, especially considering the plethora of wide talent that Gareth Southgate has to choose from.

However, it is not just the wide players that Saka is outperforming in the England set-up, it's everyone. The Gunners' wide wizard has been named England's Player of the Year for two years running now, beating out the likes of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to claim the prize.

Saka's current valuation

So, with such a meteoric rise – one that is showing no signs of slowing down – just how much money is the Hale End graduate worth in today's market?

Well, according to the CIES Football Observatory, the young Englishman is currently worth a whopping €200m, which works out at around £171m.

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

Now, realistically, the Gunners will not be selling their 'starboy' anytime soon, and you can imagine that the fans would rather see mant other players in the squad leave before the academy graduate departs.

However, it shows that clubs can make much more money by developing and nurturing their stars, as any potential sale is registered as all profit under the current rules, given that he joined the academy for nothing.

One of Saka's contemporaries, and another Premier League prodigy, is Manchester City's Phil Foden, due to his age, position, and importance to the national side.

However, according to CIES, the City gem is worth a fair bit less than his title challenger, coming in at a valuation of €150m, or about £128m.

The Stockpot-born dynamo has scored 74 goals and provided 50 assists in 251 games, meaning he has averaged 0.49 goal involvements per match since making his debut for the treble winners.

Arsenal could've supercharged title push by signing "monster" Jesus upgrade

The Brazilian has been a valuable signing, but his lack of cutting edge could cost the Gunners.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 8, 2024

While their personal statistics are incredibly similar, their different valuations show how important Saka is to Arsenal, whilst Foden has a way to go before he gets there within the City squad.

Ultimately, both youngsters are uber-talented and look destined to dominate the game for the next decade-plus. Still, Arsenal's academy superstar has already taken so much responsibility upon his shoulders, so it does make sense to see him valued slightly higher in today's market.

Arsenal and Arteta have hit the jackpot with Saka, and they will be hoping that the next academy graduate to become a superstar is just around the corner.
