Twist: New £20m update on Man United move for Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth

Manchester United are looking to bring in Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United, but a twist has now emerged regarding the situation, according to a new update.

Man Utd want Dan Ashworth

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that he sees Ashworth as an ideal man to hire as United's new sporting director, as he changes the way the club go about their recruitment, with terms already agreed between the pair last week.

The Englishman has worked wonders at Newcastle, forging a strong relationship with Eddie Howe and identifying top-quality signings, so he could play a pivotal role in looking to help the Red Devils return to the top of English football.

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ashworth has confirmed his desire to leave the Magpies, with United's Premier League rivals placing him on gardening leave, and it is believed that £20m will have to be paid to Newcastle if they want to bring him in straight away.

If not, they will have to wait two years before he can start work at Old Trafford, due to his contract and a significant update has dropped regarding United's pursuit of him, having made an approach.

Dan Ashworth to Man Utd twist

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, Manchester United are not willing to pay £20m in compensation to bring in Ashworth, suggesting his move to Old Trafford could have to wait.

Dan Ashworth.

"Man United will not pay £20million to land Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth, sources have told Football Insider. Football Insider revealed last week (14 February) that Newcastle chief Ashworth agreed terms on a move to United and informed the Magpies of his intention to leave.

"Negotiations are now ongoing between the two clubs as the Magpies look to cash in on Ashworth. He is under contract in the north east until June 2026 and it is believed the Tyneside club will initially ask for as much as £20million. Man United have baulked at that initial price tag and talks will continue."

This is clearly a frustrating update for United supporters to hear, considering what a strong appointment Ashworth could be moving forward, but it is no great surprise to see Newcastle holding firm, looking to get as much money as possible in the deal.

Ultimately, it looks as though a compromise is going to have to be reached between the two clubs, landing at a figure they both agree on, or the 52-year-old may not be a Red Devils employee until 2026.

The fact that United have made an official approach is exciting, however, and having not had a proper sporting director in place for so long, unlike rivals such as Manchester City and Liverpool, fans will hope that this is another major step in the right direction, following some poor years at Old Trafford.

Manchester United could pounce for "amazing" defender, Ten Hag loves him

His club have decided to sell him this year if nothing changes.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 27, 2024

There is still lots of work to be done, though, and Ashworth won't solve all the issues on his own, but there is a feeling of positivity growing at the club, with Ratcliffe gaining more power and results improving on the pitch.

'If you are a great talent, you need time' – Shreyas Iyer

The 24-year old batsman says it was ‘difficult’ to miss out on World Cup selection, but is confident he ‘will play for sure in the future’

Shreyas Iyer has an opportunity to end India’s search for a reliable ODI No. 4 as they head to the Caribbean, where he has had recent success with the India A side. But he wants to have some sort of continuity in the side, because “getting in and out of the team doesn’t create a good pattern.””If you are really a good talent, then you need a certain amount of chances to prove yourself and get acclimatised to the conditions,” quoted Iyer as saying. “If you keep coming in and going out [of the team], it doesn’t really set a good pattern for one’s self and you start disbelieving yourself. If you are a great talent, then you need some time.”Iyer, who at 24 is among India’s most consistent domestic performers, made 187 runs at 62.33, including two half-centuries in four innings, for India A during their 4-1 unofficial ODI series win in the Caribbean earlier this month. In April and May, Iyer played a key role in steering Delhi Capitals to their first IPL play-off spot since 2012, impressing not just with his run-making but also his leadership under head coach Ricky Ponting. In December 2018, Iyer admitted to being “emotionless” after being overlooked repeatedly despite consistent scores. He was part of India’s T20I squad against Australia in March, but couldn’t break into the XI. Iyer admits it’s only natural to lose patience, but wants to try and put past frustrations behind him.”Yes, you tend to lose patience but selection is not in your hands,” he said. “All you can do is perform, perform and perform and that is what I enjoy doing. You have to keep performing and keep showing people that you are capable of playing at the higher league. Once you get that sniff, you never look back.”Iyer also said “it was difficult to not get selected” for the World Cup, but wants to build towards the next edition through his consistency.”It was my dream to play the World Cup for my country. I know there are a few opportunities that I got but unfortunately the team combination was such that it didn’t demand me to be there.”There was a lot of buzz about me before the World Cup selection because I was consistent and aware about the hard work and smart work that I had put in. It will definitely reap benefits and help me in future when I play for India. I just kept myself positive and always in high spirits. It didn’t disturb me from inside at all. It was a dream to play the World Cup and I will play for sure in the future.”Iyer’s strength is his back-foot game, and he is quite a good puller of the short ball, an area he admits to have worked on with Ponting. For now, as he gears up for a second wind of sorts, he believes the familiarity of having played in the West Indies will help him.”The A tour has always given me an opportunity to prove myself in the higher league as this is the stepping stone,” he said. “I was in West Indies for the List A series and I had an idea of how the pitches play and also it’s so hot out there that you need to keep yourself hydrated. These are little things that you learn as you start playing.”You have to always work on your batting as you are never perfect. I am working on my batting every day and trying to perfect a few shots that will help me score all around the world. Pull and sweep are two shots that can help me score runs outside India. These are two shots that can immediately put pressure back on bowlers.”

Michael Klinger masterclass seals quarter-finals spot for Gloucestershire at Kent

Spitfires must win at Essex as part of a five-way battle on Friday night for the remaining two finals places

The ‘Ben Stokes Effect’ was there for all to see at a packed Canterbury on Thursday night as the crowd to see Kent play Gloucestershire far exceeded the number of seats available, leaving standing room only. None were let down as veteran Michael Klinger put on a masterclass in T20 batting as Gloucestershire beat Kent to seal their place in the quarter-finals.Before this fixture, Gloucestershire and Kent sat second and third respectively in the South Group, equal on 14 points, five points behind group winners Sussex. A win for either side here would guarantee them a quarter-finals berth. However, lose this game and their qualification would come down to a thrilling final Group Stage round on Friday night. The stakes were high for both teams, but most of all for Gloucestershire, who haven’t been to T20 Finals Day since 2007. Incidentally, they lost to Kent in the final of that year’s competition. They will have fancied their chances this time around against Kent, who haven’t beaten Gloucestershire in a T20 match since 2016.Keenly aware of the opportunity to break his side’s T20 curse, captain Klinger – who is set to call time on his 21-year career at the end of the tournament – produced a display that even the home fans could appreciate. The opener’s innings was perfectly paced. The first of his four sixes came in the second over, and he pushed on from there offering no chances as he completed his century off the final ball of Gloucestershire’s 20 overs. The Australian finished 102 not out off 65 balls, hitting nine fours to go with his haul of maximums, as his side lost only three wickets on their way to a total of 180.After Kent lost overseas T20 specialist and off spinner Mohammad Nabi to international duty and overseas quick Adam Milne to injury this week, someone had to step up with the ball. Nobody would have thought that person would be Alex Blake. Blake opened the bowling for Kent, despite the 30-year old never having bowled in a T20 before, and finished with 1 for 17 off his four overs. Gloucestershire were happy to play his flighted off spin for singles, and instead pick apart more established bowlers like Mitchell Clayden, Fred Klaassen and Daniel Bell-Drummond.Kent’s response started badly as they lost both openers within four overs needing some serious rebuilding at 18 for 2. Enter captain Sam Billings and Nabi’s replacement signing, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. Both were going to have to bat well for their side to reach their 181-run target, but instead Gloucestershire fielded badly. Both hit fifties and treated the crowd to some sumptuous strokeplay.During the middle overs, when Kent should have been restricted, Gloucestershire gave away runs unnecessarily. Overthrows, drops, fumbles onto the boundary rope, the fielding performance had them all. The louder and more frequently the crowd jeered, the more Gloucestershire seemed to misfield. Finally they held a catch to dismiss Billings for 55 – taken by Miles Hammond off the bowling of Ryan Higgins – who claimed 3 for 36. The free-flowing scoring continued, however, and the game had become a nail-biter when it needn’t have.Needing 12 off nine, Blake holed out to long off, and du Plessis fell the exact same way. Kent still needed 12 needed off the final over and it was always going to be difficult against David Payne. The hosts managed only six and must now win at Essex as part of a five-way battle to be decided on Friday night for the remaining two places in the quarter-finals.

Erik Edman says Tottenham have a magical youngster yet to make his debut

Former Tottenham defender Erik Edman has lavished praise on a "magical" youngster who is yet to make his senior debut for Spurs.

Lange transfer policy of signing Europe's top talent

The N17 academy has blossomed in recent years, with top talents like Jamie Donley, Dane Scarlett and Oliver Skipp coming as just three examples of young players who eventually broke into the first team.

Journalist says Spurs could re-sign "beautiful" player ahead of Pochettino

Chelsea are believed to have looked at signing him as well.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 23, 2024

Youth is a very important subject at Spurs and manager Ange Postecoglou, who recently stated that he wants Tottenham to become one of Europe's premier destinations for promising talent.

“It’s what people are seeing,” Postecoglou said on Tottenham's appeal to rising stars (via The Athletic).

“You can try to sell a vision to someone, but if there’s tangible physical evidence of it… Anyone who has watched us since I’ve joined will have seen the aspirations we have to be the kind of team we want to be.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

“That’s not just me saying it, we’re actually doing it. OK, we’re not the finished product by any stretch. But we’re giving young players an opportunity. Destiny, Pape and Micky, all guys in their early 20s who have already played significant roles.

“We’re building a team. From our perspective, it’s pleasing and hopefully we become a club which is a preferred destination for talented young players. There aren’t too many hidden gems around — everyone knows who the talents are. Hopefully our point of difference, I’ve always felt your football is your biggest selling point, beyond anything else. Hopefully we’re showing evidence of that which is helping us.”

Tottenham continue to be linked with a host of young players heading into January, including Udinese right-back Festy Ebosele and Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite among others.

Perhaps the biggest statement of intent by Spurs in recent months was hijacking Barcelona's deal to sign Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall on a buy-to-loan back deal from Djurgardens IF. The 18-year-old ultimately chose north London over the Camp Nou in a huge signal that Tottenham's appeal is growing and growing.

"It felt better in the stomach," said Bergvall on why he chose Spurs over Barcelona.

"They are both incredible clubs. It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50 for a very long time, but it felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not very easy to say no to Barcelona, it took a very long time to decide. It was a tough decision."

Edman praises "magical" Bergvall

Currently back out on loan at Djurgardens, where he is impressing, former Spurs defender Edman has heaped praise on Bergvall and perhaps explains exactly what supporters can expect from the teenager.

Lucas Bergvall – everything you need to know

Date of Birth: February 2nd

Nationality: Sweden

Height: 1.87m

Position: Central midfield

“What an incredible player this can be," said Edman to SVT, relayed by Sport Witness, coming after the midfield prodigy bagged two goals and an assist as Djurgarden's battered Nordic United 5-0 this week.

"The build-up to Hummet’s 3-0 was also magical. Tottenham probably feel they are pretty happy with this deal right now”.

Essex seal tie as Zampa runs out Northeast with two needed off last ball

Essex and Hampshire share the points for the second time in two years, as they maintain their slim quarter-final hopes

Hampshire and Essex Eagles tied for a second year in a row as Adam Zampa ran half-century maker Sam Northeast out off the last ball of a thrilling match.Hampshire, chasing 140 to win, needed 11 off the final over, having previously required 42 from three overs, before pulling it down to two runs from the last ball. With Northeast, who was on 72, on strike the batsman struck down the ground but could only find Zampa – who easily had Northeast out his ground attempting a second.Northeast had turned the match around with 73 from 56 balls, with the match seemingly Essex’s to win before the nervy finale. The shared points helps neither side in their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals – they both sit on 11 points, two points adrift of Somerset and Middlesex.Having won the toss and chosen the bowl Hampshire struck early. Chris Wood continued his incredible first-over wicket-taking record when he had Tom Westley lbw to the first delivery of the match – it was the fifth time in this season’s Blast the left-armer had stuck in his first over.Kyle Abbott copied Wood in the next over as Essex were left 3 for 2 when Cameron Delport was brilliantly caught behind by Lewis McManus.Dan Lawrence and Adam Wheater then ambled along at around six an over in an 83-run stand for the third wicket to revive the innings – before Wheater was caught on the square boundary.Lawrence continued, though, with a series of delightful shots through and over the covers, to go with a towering six over midwicket. He passed 1,000 T20 runs and a 13th fifty of the season across all formats, off 37 balls. But as with his first 12 half-centuries, Lawrence couldn’t convert to three figures as he picked out Ian Holland at backward point while attempting a reverse scoop.Ryan ten Doeschate plumb lbw to Chris Morris and Abbott yorking Ravi Bopara and Simon Harmer in the same over to take figures of three for 15, also departed – leaving the Eagles on 139 for 7.Like Essex earlier, Hampshire lost both openers early on as James Vince and Rilee Rossouw both picked out Ravi Bopara on the point rope.Northeast and Liam Dawson attempted to rebuild for the hosts but despite running hard between the wickets they struggled to hit boundaries in their 68-run alliance. With seven overs to go, and only four fours between them, the required rate was up and 10 an over – with Dawson departing for 31 off 34 balls during that 14th over after slogging a sweep straight to cow corner. But thanks to some clever striking from Northeast, whose half century came in 46 balls with five fours, Hampshire ground themselves back into contention.Chris Morris and James Fuller, 17 off 12, both departed but Northeast and Lewis McManus collected 11 off the 18th over, 19 from the 19th over and managed to slice past the 11 needed off the final Mohammad Amir over before the last ball hijinx.
