£60m star no longer wants new deal as Tottenham consider summer bid for him

A £60 million star is apparently not interested in signing a new contract with his club, which comes as Tottenham consider making a summer bid for him.

Tottenham's chase for homegrown stars

According to recent reports, Spurs appear very determined to sign English stars as links surround a plethora of the country's best talents.

Indeed, the likes of Chelsea's Conor Gallagher, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite stand out as some of Tottenham's rumoured transfer targets from the past few weeks, while there are also suggestions they're in the mix for Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer.

Not only do the aforementioned have proven Premier League experience, but they also help to balance Spurs' homegrown quota. Manager Ange Postecoglou, speaking last year, explained the importance of bringing in homegrown players over the next few windows.

Fulham

“It’s not just about this window but where you will find yourself in the next couple of windows,” said Postecoglou on Spurs' transfer policy.

“There has to be a strategy behind it. You’ve got some U21 players who in the next couple of years will not be able to fit under that criteria. I’m really keen on building a team here so we don’t want to see as much movement as there has been in this window in the next two or three.

“To do that we’re trying to build a squad that isn’t going to require too many adjustments and part of that is knowing that we need a homegrown quota so we can fill that in, whether that’s with players coming from the academy or within the league. I think that is important.”

They've also been linked with signing a new centre-back, despite completing a deal for Radu Dragusin in January. Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi is apparently a target in that regard, with journalist Dean Jones sharing an update for Sportslens.

Tottenham considering summer bid for Guehi

According to Jones, Tottenham are contemplating a summer bid for Guehi, who would also count as homegrown given his English status.

As well as Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool are said to be in the mix for him, and it is believed he "would not be interested in the idea of a new improved deal at this stage".

Guehi's contract expires in 2026, meaning Palace have a few limited windows to sell for a high price. £60 million is the fee they'd apparently entertain, and it will be interesting to see who wins the race for his signature.

The Three Lions international has made 22 appearances this season, with goalkeeper Josef Bursik calling him a "tank" and "massive" player.

How Guehi fits into Postecoglou's side will be pretty interesting, as Dragusin's arrival means Spurs already have a trio of exceptional centre-backs to choose from.

Fecha a casinha!

I have 'unfinished business' as Test captain, declares Tim Paine after Oval defeat

“There’s a little bit of cricket left in this old body” says Paine, who admits he has “a couple” of regrets about the defeat at The Oval

Matt Roller15-Sep-2019Tim Paine says he has “unfinished business” as Australia’s Test captain after defeat at The Oval allowed England to draw the Ashes series, and that he has “a little bit of cricket left” in his body.Despite Matthew Wade’s counter-attacking innings of 117 – which Paine surprisingly described as “one of the great Ashes hundreds” – Australia fell to a 135-run defeat after failing to chase 399 in their fourth innings, and their celebrations were notably muted. While they celebrated as usual with champagne when the urn was presented, Justin Langer looked on with a scowl, and Paine admitted that defeat had put “a bit of a dampener” on their achievements in the series.ALSO READ: Paine train’s uncertain final destination”There’s some mixed emotions,” Paine told Sky. “But I think from where this group has come from, to come to England and retain the Ashes is still a huge deal. It hasn’t been done for 20 years, so we’ve got a lot to be proud of.”I think we’ve got some improvement, some learning to do, and that’s a great thing for us.”About his own future, Paine denied that there was a feeling that retaining the urn represented an “endgame” for him.”I didn’t see it as a beginning, or see it as an option all that long ago. As I said before this Test match, I’m loving the job I’ve got at the moment. I feel like there’s a little bit of unfinished business with this team and where we’re heading.”I feel like I’ve got a little bit of cricket left in this old body, but I’m not looking too far down the track to when exactly that is.”Paine said that he had “a couple” of regrets about the Oval Test, but conceded that England had “outplayed” his side over the course of the four days.Paine became only the second Australian captain to lose an Ashes Test in England after winning the toss and choosing to bowl, after Ricky Ponting did so at Edgbaston in 2005, and joked that he is “always 50:50″ before the toss.”I can’t read a pitch that well,” he said. “We’re trying to get to the stage where the toss isn’t that important to us. You’ve got to win games of cricket when you lose a toss, and whether you bat or bowl first is a bit irrelevant.”The stats do not particularly back Paine’s claims up. Since 1997, Australia have lost the toss 16 times in Tests in England, and won only three of those games, drawing three more and losing ten; out of the 20 games in which they have won the toss, they have won ten, drawn five and lost five.Paine also bemoaned Australia’s inability to take their chances on the first day.”I feel a bit sorry for our bowlers,” he said. “They were fantastic all series, created plenty of chances on day one and we just didn’t back them up. England got ahead of the game, and then they took it away from us.”

Clement benches Barisic in predicted Rangers lineup vs Motherwell

Glasgow Rangers extended their winning run to 11 matches with a 2-1 win against Kilmarnock in midweek, but they did not make it easy for themselves.

The plastic pitch at Rugby Park upset the Gers' usual rhythm as they struggled to make things happen during the first half, trailing by a goal to nil after 45 minutes.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Philippe Clement had to deliver a strong team talk at the break, and it clearly did the job, as a James Tavernier free-kick followed by a lovely low effort by Tom Lawrence swung the match in their favour and the Light Blues saw out a crucial victory.

The fixtures are flowing thick and fast as the Ibrox side take on Motherwell this afternoon. A win would allow them to extend their advantage at the top of the Premiership table to five points, albeit temporarily, and Clement will be trusting his side to deliver a solid performance to pile the pressure on Celtic.

With that in mind, here's a look at the potential starting lineup that the Belgian manager could choose this afternoon, with three potential alterations from the midweek triumph…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

The Englishman has been in imperious form this season for the club, and it could even potentially lead to an England call up in the coming weeks.

In 43 matches this season, Butland has kept 22 clean sheets and conceded 31 goals, returning to the form which saw him become a regular in the Premier League with Stoke City.

They say attack wins matches, but defence wins championships and the ‘keeper is going to make all the difference.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier

When Rangers received a free kick just outside the Kilmarnock box on Wednesday evening just minutes into the second half, there was only going to be one outcome.

Tavernier stepped up when it mattered most and scored his 121st goal for the club, a remarkable number for any player, never mind a right-back.

His captaincy has been criticised in the past, but this season, he could lead the Gers to an incredible treble.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

There will be no change among the centre-backs for today's clash with Well, as the duo were solid against Killie in midweek.

Goldson and John Souttar have formed an excellent partnership which has evolved due to a consistent run in the starting XI together.

The Englishman recently made his 300th competitive appearance for the Light Blues and, judging by his injury record and performances, he could reach 400 if he maintains his current form.

4 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The Scot was impressive yet again during the comeback win over Killie on Wednesday evening as he won eight of his nine aerial duels, was successful with 100% of his long balls and made a key pass.

He and Goldson have been the nailed-on centre-back duo for the Gers since the start of the year and long may it continue.

5 LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Ridvan Yilmaz

Borna Barisic started against the Rugby Park side, yet he endured a woeful first half which saw him lose possession 16 times while completing just 69% of his attempted passes.

He was taken off at half-time, replaced by Ridvan Yilmaz, and the contrast was remarkable.

The Turkish defender looked a bigger threat going forward while impressive defensively and there is no doubt who should be the starting left-back from now on.

6 CM – John Lundstram

John Lundstram for Rangers.

Mr consistent. Lundstram has missed only one game since Clement took over as manager last October and his form will almost certainly earn him an extended contract.

The former Sheffield United midfielder will retain his place, and it will be one of the January signings that will be deployed next to him this afternoon.

7 CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohammed Diomande

Diomande has made quite an impression at Rangers since arriving in January. Across just six matches, the Ivorian has scored twice – in league games against St Johnstone and Hearts – while adding some dynamism in the midfield.

He did struggle on the Rugby Park pitch in midweek, but this experience will allow him to perform better in the future, and he could emerge as a star in the coming years.

8 RW – Dujon Sterling

Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.

Clement has utilised Sterling in a few positions recently, but it was his stint on the right wing during the clash against St Johnstone that caught the eye.

He won a penalty, missed a big chance, and succeeded with a dribble attempt after coming on for Scott Wright, showing his attacking intentions.

9 AM – Tom Lawrence

Tom Lawrence

It was perhaps a surprise to see Lawrence take to the pitch in midweek due to the surface and his injury issues in the past, but he performed wonderfully.

The Welshman scored the winner, and it was a testament to just how well he has bounced back after various setbacks threatened to derail his Ibrox spell since arriving in the summer of 2022.

10 LW – Ross McCausland

Ross McCausland

Clement stated in his pre-match press conference that Oscar Cortes would miss the tie today due to an injury suffered against Kilmarnock.

This means that McCausland will start on the left wing as Rabbi Matondo might not be fully fit either, and it represents a chance for him to shine out of his comfort zone.

Leeds set to be without "top performer" vs Millwall, it could be serious

Leeds United could be without one of their "top performers" for longer than they first thought.

Leeds defence shining under Farke

The 2022/23 season was quite a turbulent one for Leeds, with the club being relegated from the top flight after garnering just 31 points. This term in the Championship has had a fairly different outcome. Daniel Farke's men are currently battling for the second tier title and are just three points behind league leaders Leicester.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Their performances across the campaign have no doubt been thanks to not only the tactical decisions made by Farke, but the performance of the players themselves. Their defence in particular has been an area which has often stood out ahead of the rest of the crowd. The West Yorkshire club have conceded the least goals in the Championship (28) with the next closest being Leicester (33).

As with most relegated clubs, the Whites had something of a clear-out in the summer with a multitude of players leaving for pastures new. Some departed on permanent deals, whilst others have just found themselves plying their trade for another team temporarily.

The additions of the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram and Joe Rodon have all helped, while Pascal Struijk has kicked on to become a really top player under the former Norwich boss. Described as a "top performer" by former Leeds defender Leigh Bromby, Struijk staked his claim for a starting spot both in the Premier League and the Championship.

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

“I think he’s solid. He’s a top performer at this level, at Championship level. He’s a top centre-back,” Bromby told BBC Radio Leeds. "Being left-footed gives that real balance with him and Rodon in terms of trying to play out, which Daniel wants all the time. And he did not put a foot wrong today."

The centre-back was a mainstay in Farke's starting 11 and played a total of 25 games in all competitions prior to suffering an injury on Boxing Day.

Struijk's injury not recovering as expected

Despite being absent since Boxing Day, Struijk was making "positive" improvements and was almost "ready to join" first team training as per Farke. However, Phil Hay of The Athletic has now shared that the injury is more severe than first thought, and not only is Struijk not playing this weekend, that's not even the worst of it, with surgery possibly required.

If surgery is needed, this would likely mean the end of the Netherlands youth international's season, which would massively hinder Leeds' promotion push. Only time will tell whether the versatile defender will be able to recover in time for the end of the campaign.

England allrounder Moeen Ali has signed for Cape Town Blitz in this year’s Mzansi Super League. He joins as cover for Wahab Riaz and will be available for the first two games of the competition before a stint at the T10 league in the UAE.Moeen missed out on a Test central contract with England for 2019-20, after opting to take a break from the longest format, and has been rested for the T20I series in New Zealand. “I feel like I want to enjoy my batting and this will give me a bit of a break,” he told ESPNcricinfo last month.Moeen was part of England’s World Cup-winning squad in the summer and will likely be involved in the white-ball legs of the tour of South Africa after Christmas. After being dropped from the Test squad during the Ashes, he rediscovered his form while leading Worcestershire to within one ball of defending their Vitality Blast title in September. He has also had two seasons with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and his signing was hailed by Cape Town Blitz head coach Ashwell Prince.”Moeen brings huge international experience to the team and in county cricket, he won the T20 Blast in 2018 with Worcestershire Rapids and he led them to the 2019 final, so we’re looking forward to having him in Cape Town,” Prince said.Moeen said: “I’m very excited to be part of the MSL and joining Cape Town Blitz for the start of the tournament. I’m looking forward to playing with and against some world-class players.”Wahab, the left-arm seamer, was signed in last month’s MSL draft but is currently involved in Pakistan’s T20I squad in Australia, with the third match of the series overlapping with Cape Town’s opening fixture. He is expected to be available from November 14, when Blitz play their first home game.
