Chelsea now set to make star player available this summer amid PSR worries

Chelsea are now set to make one of their star players available for transfer this summer in a bid to balance the books and comply with PSR.

Chelsea's FFP worries after heavy spending

Todd Boehly and co have pumped significant funds into the club, with Mauricio Pochettino's side spending over £400 million on new signings last summer alone.

Chelsea now willing to do anything to sign "fantastic" Real Madrid star

This would be Boehly’s biggest move yet…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 4, 2024

Some Chelsea sources have reportedly played down worries surrounding a potential PSR breach, but some reports indicate that a wide array of player sales could be on the cards by June 30 in a bid to balance their books.

Financial experts, like Stefan Borson, have also predicted "more severe" points deductions than that of Nottingham Forest or Everton if they're found guilty of any breaches – despite not being charged as of yet.

“Possibly more severe (than Forest and Everton)," said Borson on talkSPORT (via The Sun).

“I think the scale of the losses they're currently forecasting, to me, appear to be vastly in excess of both Everton and Nottingham Forest. There was an assumption with Mason Mount, because he was announced on Manchester United's website on July 1 that [his sale] had been put into this current season.

"So the £55million of profit was in this season. It now transpires that Mason Mount appears to have been transacted in 2022/23 and that is how they got through [FFP rules].

"From an operating perspective, is going to be even worse than last year because they've got no Champions League and no Europe at all.

"It's those sort of [exit] deals that need to be done. And by the way, they all need to be done by June 30. That, as we know, is articulated within the Forest decision."

There are many nominees for the Chelsea exit door, with Pochettino holding no shortage of surplus-to-requirement players. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, David Datro Fofana and Armando Broja are all out on loan, and the Blues are very likely to listen to offers for all of them.

Another player who's been touted with a potential exit is Conor Gallagher, despite his star status under Pochettino.

Gallagher "set to be made available" this summer at Chelsea

Gallagher's deal expires next year, putting Chelsea under some pressure to sell the academy graduate for pure profit.

According to ESPN and journalist James Olley, Gallagher is now "set to be made available" for transfer this summer as Chelsea seek to avoid PSR breaches.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher celebrates.

The 24-year-old, who's started 28 league games this season, has also been called "priceless" by Pochettino.

“He’s a player with great commitment with the team," said Pochettino.

"Always trying to compensate every situation in an offensive and defensive situation and that is priceless to have a player like him. I’m so happy for him and I’m so happy for the team because it’s a victory we needed, the three points.”

Graeme Smith seeks clarity on Faf du Plessis' future following ODI captaincy change

Director of cricket seeks ‘robust’ discussion with incumbent ahead of future South Africa series

Graeme Smith, South Africa’s director of cricket, says that Quinton de Kock’s appointment as ODI captain is the first step in a succession plan aimed towards a successful challenge for the 2023 World Cup, as he confirmed that Faf du Plessis will not be reinstated as leader should he return to the team for the series against Australia in February.Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg, Smith added that the selectors would review du Plessis’ remaining roles as Test and T20 captain at the conclusion of the England tour, but stressed the need for a “robust” discussion about his long-term future in the team.Du Plessis, 35, hinted at the end of last week’s innings defeat in Port Elizabeth that the fourth Test at the Wanderers, starting on Friday, could be his last on home soil.He has been short of runs in the past few months – his second-innings 36 was his highest score in six innings against England, in which time he has been averaging 18.83.And though du Plessis has earmarked South Africa’s Test tour of the West Indies in July as his farewell series, Smith is cautious about committing to the incumbent captain, both for that trip and for the T20 World Cup that takes place in Australia in November.”We see Faf playing a role as a player but from a leadership perspective, we felt the need to move on,” Smith said of the decision to hand over the ODI reins to de Kock. “Faf doesn’t see himself being around in 2023. Leadership has been an issue of late in South African cricket and we have made the decision to give Quinny an opportunity.”We feel tactically he is good, there are areas of his leadership that we all know we need to grow and develop but he is the right guy at this stage to take the one-day side forward.De Kock himself has said he plans to take a “street-smart” approach to his new role, and should it prove a success in the coming weeks against England and Australia, the role could yet be his for the T20 World Cup too.”With the World Cup around the corner, we need to go forward,” said Smith. “At the moment Faf is in that position but I need to sit with him post this Test series. He has got a bit of time because he is being rested from the one-day series so we will have some time to have a robust discussion on his future.”He is the South African Test captain. The next Test match we play after this series will be in the Caribbean – there is an extensive amount of time. I need to understand how he sees his future in the game.”ALSO READ: De Kock promises ‘street-smart’ approach to ODI captaincySmith admitted that, while his appointment prior to the England tour had helped to deflect some of the political issues away from du Plessis, he had still had to deal with more off-field issues than most international captains, not least given the absence of Temba Bavuma and the impact that has had on South Africa’s transformation targets.”For far too long, he has had too much to deal with and too many things to talk about, and I really wanted that not to happen in this series,” said Smith. “At times it has. Post these series, him and I can really sit down and work on how he sees his future and both of us can put our cards on the table.”In terms of du Plessis’ future in ODI cricket, Smith insisted that the loss of the captaincy did not necessarily mean the end of a white-ball career that began in January 2011, and that his extensive experience could still be important in a new-look squad.”His record in one-day cricket and T20 cricket is outstanding,” Smith said. “It will be silly of us not to have him involved. We’ve put a very young team on the table. Talented, yes, but we are up against the world champions. It could be a very daunting series for our guys, so we need to balance how we expose the youngsters with some senior players.”At the age of 27, de Kock ought to be entering his prime, but Smith acknowledged that as a young leader he will need support on and off the field to grow into his new role.”As CSA we are not going to throw him to the wolves,” said Smith. “He has had a bit of a taste of the leadership in India, we feel he is the right guy to go forward. We have got to support him and make sure we develop into an outstanding leader.”The T20 World Cup could also feature a return to South Africa colours for AB de Villiers, whose belated decision to make himself available for last year’s 50-over World Cup came too late for the selectors to include him. However, even at the age of 36, de Villiers remains one of the pre-eminent T20 batsmen in the world, and Smith said he was open to the prospect of his return.”His record in one-day and T20 cricket is outstanding,” said Smith. “It would be silly of us not have him involved.”

Ange could unleash Spurs star in brand new role to ease Udogie injury

With Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place and in control of their own destiny, it seems that a Champions League finish would conclude a promising first season for Ange Postecoglou.

However, since their crucial 4-0 victory over top-four rival Aston Villa, the Lilywhites’ form has been rather inconsistent, with two wins in five matches.

The latest of those was a heavy 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United, which would have most definitely unsettled the Spurs camp.

Unfortunately, on Saturday, Spurs’ disappointing week became even worse, as journalist Fabrizio Romano announced that first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie is set to miss the rest of the season and the Euros through injury.

With the north London derby just around the corner, this news couldn’t have possibly arrived at a worse time, but luckily, the boss does have a few replacements in line.

With that in mind, there are options in front of the Australian, with three individuals potentially stepping in during Udogie’s absence.

1 The obvious option Ben Davies

Ben Davies for Spurs

Spurs’ reliable, versatile star Ben Davies is clearly the like-for-like swap at full-back for Udogie, now that he’s the only natural left-back in the squad.

The Welsh defender has featured in 17 Premier League matches this season, both at full-back and as a centre half, which is why he’s such a valuable player to have in the squad.

eric-dier-ben-davies-tottenham-opinion

The former Swansea rock is certainly a tenacious tackler who likes to get stuck in, as shown by his 4.3 duels won per game with a 66% win rate, but he’s also extremely technical, rarely giving the ball away cheaply, as highlighted by his 92% pass accuracy this season.

The only downside to fielding Davies is that his last minute of action in a Spurs shirt dates back to the end of February, and would Postecoglou want a rusty defender up against Saka?

2 The tactical tweak Emerson Royal

Emerson Royal

With Pedro Porro racing against the clock to be available in time for next weekend’s clash, Emerson Royal may end up starting the tie anyway, but as a right-back.

However, if the Spaniard does return in time, the former Barcelona man could be an option for left-back, having already played in that position five times this season in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has the right balance between attack and defence, and just like Davies, he retains the ball very well, as shown by his average pass accuracy of 92% in the Premier League this season.

Emerson has had slightly more game time than the Welsh defender this season, playing 19 matches in the league, including a half against the Magpies, which may just give him the nod.

3 The wildcard option Micky van de Ven

Lilywhites’ centre-half Micky van de Ven could be fielded in a new role for Spurs for the foreseeable future, moving one position to the left to play at full-back.

Although he’s never played in this position in a Tottenham shirt, the Dutch defender has previous experience of it when playing for his old side, VFL Wolfsburg.

Micky van de Ven

Due to Van de Ven’s immense athleticism, physicality, speed, and size, he’s an extremely difficult defender to beat, hence why he’s comfortable defending 1v1 scenarios.

As you can see by the table above from a Bundesliga game last season against Hertha Berlin, not only did Van de Ven not look out of place, but he thrived as a left-back.

With Saka up next, it’s vital that the left-back wins his individual duels and keeps the Gunners winger quiet, and given that the 22-year-old won all nine of his ground duels and wasn't dribbled past, he’s certainly capable of completing that task.

Yet, what makes Van de Ven so “impressive,” as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, is that he’s extremely good technically, and his ability to cover ground easily would make Spurs dominant in transition.

If the number 37 was opted for to replace Udogie, then it would mean that Radu Dragusin would slot in at centre half, making the backline incredibly secure, and it could prove to be the way forward for the rest of the season.

Leeds eye bargain under £1 million deal for international set to leave club

Leeds United could strike a bargain under £1 million deal for a "top-class talent" this summer, as it is believed he's played the last game for his current club.

Leeds making transfer plans for next season

The Whites have drawn this Championship season to a close this afternoon with their final game at home to Southampton, excluding the Play-Offs still to be contested, but the Elland Road board have been drawing up their summer transfer plans for months.

Leeds United in pole position to sign 25 y/o international

Leeds are already eyeing key squad improvements in the transfer window.

It's been a long campaign but entertaining campaign following Daniel Farke's side, who were locked in a three-way battle for the automatic promotion places with both Leicester City and Ipswich Town for the vast majority of it.

However, the Yorkshire giants have one eye on next season, and it is believed they wish to strengthen in key areas across the defence. Leeds are one of the sides eyeing a free move for West Ham defender Ben Johnson, according to recent reports, with the full-back rejecting multiple contract offers and looking set to leave.

Leeds have displayed fragility at the back on a few occasions recently, with both Liam Cooper and Sam Byram's deals also set to expire in the summer, meaning Farke may want to bring in suitable replacements for the pair.

Liam Cooper

Leeds want to make Joe Rodon's deal permanent from Tottenham, and they've also been linked with PEC Zwolle’s Anselmo García MacNulty as they eye up fresh options at the back.

Elsewhere in defence, there is now the suggestion that they could move to bring in a new goalkeeper as an alternative to current mainstay number one Illan Meslier.

Leeds eyeing under £1 million move for Viktor Johansson

Rotherham shot-stopper Viktor Johansson stands out as a very interesting option in this regard.

The Swede, who has one cap for his country at international level, has been a revelation for Rotherham despite their otherwise dismal campaign – with Aftonbladet claiming this week that he may have just played his last game for the club against Cardiff City this afternoon.

They add that the goalkeeper's contract has a very affordable buy-out clause of around £736,000, and Leeds are eyeing a summer move for Johansson who they could sign for under £1 million.

"Viktor's been a wonderful goalkeeper for the club. Everyone is aware of the huge interest in him," said Rotherham boss Steve Evans.

"I'm getting phone calls from managers who want my opinion on what he's like behind the scenes. They don't ask what he's like between sticks. They see that for themselves. Whether he's with us next season remains to be seen but, at the minute, I'm planning with him. He hasn't gone anywhere yet.

"Fans have bonds with managers and players because they recognise what they do and how hard they fight for their club. Viktor is a top-class talent. I've sat in the stands and watched him and he's been wonderful. More importantly, he's a really good guy off the pitch. He's really professional.

"He's also really humble, which is different to how you sometimes find players in the Championship who have got aspirations.”

Chris Wood, Hampshire’s left-arm seamer, has announced his retirement from red-ball cricket at the age of 29 to focus on prolonging his limited-overs career.Wood has taken 105 wickets at 30.22 across a 43-match first-class career, but has regularly been dogged by injuries. He will represent Hampshire in the T20 Blast, and was a £40,000 signing for the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred draft.”I’ve been desperate to play red-ball cricket,” Wood said, “but in recent years every time I get up and running my body seems to hold me back, and this has been the case since having two knee operations over the last few seasons.”When I play red-ball cricket, I feel I’m good enough to contribute to the team but my body just hasn’t allowed me to bowl 30 to 40 overs each week and in consecutive games, so I’ve been mulling it over for some time and now feels like the right time to finally make this decision.”Concentrating solely on white-ball cricket and trying to get the most of my career, playing the formats that I’m more comfortable with and have had more success in, feels like it makes sense and I’m looking forward to being able to focus all my training overs on improving my skills as a white-ball bowler, which will hopefully help me to continue contributing to the club’s limited-overs success in the years to come.”Wood is Hampshire’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket, with 131, and was a key part of the club’s limited-overs double in 2012, as well as their sustained period of T20 success from 2010-15. He had his first taste of franchise cricket earlier this winter, playing for Northern Warriors in the Abu Dhabi T10.
