Nottingham Forest narrowly avoided relegation back to the Championship this season, with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side needing a win on the final day against Burnley to officially rubberstamp their Premier League status.

The Reds have endured a turbulent campaign, from points deductions to owner Evangelos Marinakis storming the pitch at full-time following Paul Tierney’s mistake against Liverpool – the 2023/24 season has had it all.

However, it has allowed some players to excel and develop, which, unfortunately for Forest, has led to huge interest, with Murillo and Morgan Gibbs-White both linked with big-money moves away from the City Ground.

The money would undoubtedly help their cause in the battle to avoid another PSR punishment but would see the club lose two of their star players ahead of next season which will certainly be another tricky campaign in the Premier League.

One player has certainly gone under the radar in the East Midlands, with his talents and ability certainly dividing the fanbase on more than one occasion.

Despite splashing upwards of £30m on Ibrahim Sangare to bolster the Reds’ midfield, Ryan Yates has cemented his place in the heart of the Forest squad.

The academy graduate has worked his way up from the youth levels, all the way to the first team, even reaching 200 appearances for the club throughout the 2023/24 season.

The 26-year-old has featured in 35 of the Reds’ 38 league outings, producing some brilliant figures – undoubtedly a huge part of the club’s survival.

He’s not the easiest to watch on the eye, with his lack of quality evident, but he makes up for it with his game management and relentless nature that sees him be a nuisance to the opposition.

In the Premier League this season, he averages three tackles and two clearances per 90 – both ranking within the top 10% of all midfielders in Europe, as per FBref.

Yates has also averaged 1.9 blocks and 1.8 aerials won – with his dogged nature effective within Nuno’s midfield this season.

He also managed to bag himself his first-ever top-flight goal in the 3-1 win over Sheffield United a few weeks ago, with his excellent displays contributing to his rapid increase in value.

Six years on from his Forest debut, the 26-year-old could never have predicted the impact he would have on the first team, with his performances certainly deserving of more credit.

According to Transfermarkt, he’s valued at £10.2m, with the club making a huge profit on him in the future – especially considering he cost them nothing after progressing through the academy.

His subsequent value is higher than that of striker Chris Wood, who – despite costing the club £15m – is now only valued at £5.9m, even after his 14-goal tally in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign.

Whilst Yates still splits opinions among the supporters, one thing is for certain, every squad must wish they have a player as committed as Yates, with his desire to succeed at the club, with former Forest academy boss Gary Brazil dubbing him as "outstanding".

It may not be the prettiest to watch, but every time he plays for the Reds, you know he will put 100% in and will always do whatever it takes to push Forest in the right direction.

Cheteshwar Pujara has resumed training three times a week at his academy in Rajkot, along with a few Saurashtra team-mates. In a different world, he would’ve been in England, playing for Gloucestershire in the county championship. However, Covid-19 threatens to leave Pujara without competitive cricket for 10 months, with India’s next Test assignment scheduled for December in Australia.”You have to start at some point and it is important,” Pujara told PTI. “If you are going to the ground, you are getting used to the sun and outdoor environment. Most players have been indoors for such a long time. Initially it is just about feeling the ball and as it is, there is plenty of time before cricket starts. Mentally, some people do get frustrated but I just took it as a break,” he said. “I never felt that [I lost my edge] because I have made comebacks after longer breaks [due to injury]. The comeback you make from an injury is much tougher than a situation like this when I was not injured.”The first week [of training] is tough. After a week you are back to normal, because you have played this game for such a long time, experience matters a lot. Nobody knows what the situation will be three-four months down the line, when the next series will be held. The next few months are about preparation and getting back into the game. It is too far to think about the next series.”

A goleada nos Aflitos levou o Confiança aos 13 pontos na competição – mesma pontuação de Vitória, Ponte Preta e Londrina, todos dentro do Z4 com um jogo a menos que o Dragão.

O atraso sofrido na própria casa impede o Náutico de se isolar na liderança da Série B e deixa o Timbu ainda com a primeira posição, mas empatado em 30 pontos com o Coritiba.

Primeiro tempo:

O jogo mal começou e o Confiança já saiu na frente. Logo aos quatro minutos, Marcelinho soltou uma bomba que explodiu no travessão do Náutico. No rebote, a bola ficou nos pés de Willians Santana, que apenas teve o trabalho de empurrar para o fundo das redes dos donos da casa.

Doido para empatar, o Náutico foi ao ataque e sofreu para criar boas chances, tanto que a primeira saiu apenas aos 21 minutos. Em cobrança de escanteio, Paiva se antecipou a zaga do Confiança e cabeceou, mas a bola saiu por cima da meta dos visitantes.

Aos 23 minutos o Timbu chegou ao gol de empate, mas que não valeu. Paiva recebeu em velocidade e tocou para Jean Carlos empurrar para o gol, mas a arbitragem anulou por posição irregular na origem do lance do atacante do Náutico.

Seguindo na busca pelo empate, a equipe de Hélio dos Anjos chegou novamente aos 32 minutos. O volante Marciel recebeu a bola, carregou e da intermediária queimou para o gol e a bola passou raspando a trave esquerda de Michael.

De tanto apertar, o Náutico sofreu com o famoso “quem não faz, toma”. Aos 48 minutos, o Confiança aproveitou um erro da defesa do Náutico com Jhemerson, que roubou a bola, avançou cara a cara com o goleiro Alex Alves e rolou para Rafael Vila ampliar o marcador para os visitantes.

Segundo tempo:

A segunda etapa começou da mesma maneira do início do jogo. Nos primeiros minutos – mais precisamente quando o cronômetro marcava dois minutos – o Confiança balançou as redes do Náutico novamente. Após muita briga dentro da área, Alex Alves operou um milagre em chute de Willians e a bola sobrou para o zagueiro Nirley, que chutou e deu ainda mais tranquilidade para os visitantes no jogo.

Aos 15 minutos a goleada ficou ainda mais clara. O volante Rafael Vila recebeu na entrada da área, soltou o pé e contou com a ajuda da trave esquerda para fazer o segundo dele e o quarto do Confiança no jogo.

Dono do jogo, o Confiança perdeu uma grande chance de fazer o quinto gol aos 17 minutos. Após ótimo lançamento, Ítalo invadiu a área e ficou cara a cara com Alex Alves, mas tirou demais e a bola passou raspando a trave do Náutico.

Sem chances de igualar o placar, o Náutico levou perigo em duas oportunidades com bola aérea. Aos 20 e 29 minutos, Paiva e Yago tiveram boas chances e pararam em boas intervenções de Michael.

Aos 34 minutos o Náutico chegou novamente. Em cobrança de falta da intermediária, Jean Carlos soltou uma bomba e obrigou o goleiro Michael a voar para fazer mais uma boa defesa.

Se o Náutico não balançou as redes do Confiança no jogo deste sábado muito se passa pelo goleiro Michael. Aos 41 minutos, Jean Carlos chutou novamente de longe e obrigou o arqueiro a cair no canto esquerdo para espalmar e depois tirar com o pé para evitar que o rebote chegasse em algum atacante do Timbu.

Enquanto no primeiro tempo os acréscimos reservaram um gol para os visitantes, na etapa complementar uma confusão entre jogadores e comissões técnicas causou duas expulsões – uma para cada lado. O zagueiro Carlão – do Náutico – e o atacante Neto Berola – do Confiança – foram para o chuveiro mais cedo.

They have been strongly linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko, but the RB Leipzig man remains very much a project striker at this point, and he will not guarantee goals immediately.

There is also plenty of competition for his signature, with Manchester United and Chelsea both interested in the Slovenian striker. But Arsenal could pull off a masterstroke by signing an alternative to the 20-year-old.

Osimhen links with Chelsea and Arsenal

Now, it has been claimed that Arsenal are in pole position to sign Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen this summer. The Gunners are among the clubs who have held a longterm interest in the Nigerian striker, who has a £112m release clause written into his £250,000 a week contract in Naples, a fee that would represent a transfer record for most clubs.

Dubbed a "phenomenal" striker by then Cagliari boss Walter Mazzarri when his side faced Napoli back in 2021, he has gone on to prove that analysis correct in the years gone by, attracting interest from England's elite as a result.

So far though, no one has seen fit to trigger his release clause. In fact, interest from the Premier League was coming largely from Chelsea, and that involved a swap for Romelu Lukaku, who the Blues are still trying to shift after two loan spells away.

Fabrizio Romano now reports that the swap deal was "never really considered" by Chelsea however, as they look to raise funds through a direct sale of Lukaku, while the Blues cannot afford the £112m release clause and have pulled out for the time being.

The same cannot be said for Arsenal, as the Italian media report the Gunners are now the most likely destination due to a lack of the same financial constraints affecting Chelsea, while PSG's interest is simply in the background for the time being.

It has been a poor season for Napoli, who will be without European football of any kind next season, though Osimhen himself still found the net on 15 occasions. He is thought to be wanted by clubs in Saudi Arabia, but previous reports have claimed that the Nigerian is "waiting for Arenal".

They now seemingly have a clear run to do so if they can stump up the £112m, and the striker could finally be enough to make it third time lucky in the Premier League title race next season.

When the 2024/25 season comes around, Chelsea will have a new manager in the dugout, Enzo Maresca.

However, the Italian won’t be the only new face at Stamford Bridge, with Todd Boehly keen to bolster his squad.

Tosin Adarabioyo has already become the Blues’ first signing of the summer, and the next acquisition looks set to be at the opposite end of the field.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea target who could not only become an alternative to Benjamin Sesko, but also become their next Didier Drogba.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

It’s mentioned that the Blues are 'monitoring developments' at this moment in time as they look to bolster the attack.

The Everton striker has just one year left on his current contract, which means he could be bought for a cut price if he resumes to sign a new deal – with previous reports indicating a fee of around £40m.

This would make him a cheaper option than key target Sesko, for example, who has a release clause of £56m.

Why Calvert-Lewin could be Chelsea’s next Drogba

Drogba will be forever regarded as a legend at Chelsea for the trophies and endless amount of joy his goals brought.

For many, the Ivorian will remain an irreplaceable player given that he scored 164 goals and provided 88 assists in 381 appearances for the club.

But, according to journalist Paul Brown, Calvert-Lewin could be the “closest thing” to Drogba that Chelsea can sign, as he’s a “battering ram centre forward.”

The Everton marksman enjoyed a relatively injury-free 2023/24 campaign, starting 26 Premier League matches, scoring seven goals, and providing two assists.

It’s fair to say that when Calvert-Lewin is fit and full of confidence, he’s an absolute handful to play against.

Just like Drogba, he’s an extremely physical and athletic centre forward who mainly serves as a target man while also having excellent movement.

The Englishman’s biggest strength is having the ability to dominate aerially, ranking in the top 97% for aerial duels won in the Premier League.

Another attribute of the Toffee’s number nine is that he’s a “monster” in the penalty area, as dubbed by journalist James Dodd, which is shown by his high xG and shots per game.

This would give the Chelsea attack more unpredictability and a completely different approach, and with Cole Palmer’s delivery, Calvert-Lewin would thrive.

Although his stats do not get close to Sesko’s or even Nicolas Jackson’s, it’s important to remember the environment that each individual currently plays in.

For example, Calvert-Lewin often works with scraps, and the majority of his chances will come via set plays and crosses due to Everton having 40.6% possession last season, whereas the other two get much more service on a continuous basis.

Therefore, it may be worth taking a risk to see how the 27-year-old would perform in a better side, and given that he’d cost less than Sesko, it could prove to be a solid deal.

SASCOC has offered to meet with the ICC to provide assurance of its independence

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), which instructed Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Board and Executive to step aside on Thursday evening, has written to the ICC emphasising that its intervention cannot be considered government interference and is based in South African law.SASCOC’s communication with the game’s global governing body comes even as CSA seeks legal advice on the validity of SASCOC’s involvement in its affairs.Specifically, SASCOC sought to distance itself from the country’s government and offered to meet with the ICC to provide assurance of its independence.”SASCOC rejects any allegation or insinuation that the SASCOC intervention constitutes Government interference,” SASCOC’s letter to the ICC reads. “At no stage does or did SASCOC act under the direction or control of the Minister of Sport in the country, or the Government of the Republic of South Africa. The Board exercises its judgment independently of Government, or any other outside influence.”However, in SASCOC’s resolutions passed on Tuesday, it lists resolution 2.8 as “the directive by the Minister of Sport and Recreation for SASCOC to intervene into the affairs of CSA.”SASCOC is a legislatively-created body recognised by the National Sports and Recreation Act of 1998. It is the only sports confederation in South Africa, and is the umbrella body under which all sporting bodies in the country operate. In terms of SASCOC’s constitution it is allowed to “enquire into the activities of any of its Members where malpractices and other forms of misconduct are alleged,” its letter to the ICC reads. “The SASCOC Constitution also makes provision for SASCOC to enquire into the operational, administrative and financial activities of any of its Members where there are allegations of maladministration. CSA as a Member Federation subscribes to the SASCOC Constitution, and is bound by it.”While CSA has committed to engaging with SASCOC, it issued a media statement in the early hours of Friday evening confirming it “does not agree” with SASCOC stepping in. Former ICC Head of Legal David Becker told ESPNCricinfo that CSA is unlikely to be able to stop SASCOC from getting involved, given how broad SASCOC’s powers are.SASCOC maintains the only reason it has taken this much interest in CSA is because it believes the game of cricket is being damaged by CSA’s actions. “Given the litany of complaints that has plagued CSA since at least December 2019, there can be no doubt that CSA has been brought into disrepute, and that its standing amongst players and ex-players, the media, the public and most importantly, its stakeholders such as sponsors, and the government, have dramatically diminished resulting in a loss of trust and confidence in the organisation,” SASCOC’s letter said.The next step in SASCOC’s process is appointing a task team to investigate CSA’s administrative and financial affairs. SASCOC hoped to work with the Cricket South Africa Members’ Council – the body made up of the 14 provincial presidents who have the highest decision-making powers in CSA – to nominate the members of the task team but the Members’ Council did not meet with SASCOC on Friday. Instead, the CSA Board and Members’ Council is meeting this weekend while SASCOC appears likely to be deciding on the task team on its own.”The Task Team will be composed of eminent South Africans who have standing and integrity, and once identified, will be conducting an initial investigation within a period of one (1) month,” SASCOC said. “The Task Team will remain accountable to the SASCOC Board and the Members’ Council of Cricket South Africa once its findings and recommendations are made.”The Task Team is not an “attempt to place Cricket South Africa under administration,” but it does require “the CSA Board and those Senior CSA Executives who serve on it on an ex officio basis to step aside in order to facilitate the work of the Task Team.” SASCOC called such a request entirely reasonable, and indeed necessary,” and stressed that “The Task Team will consult with the Members’ Council where necessary, and seek its approval from time to time.”Chief among the Task Team’s missions will be to access CSA’s recently completed forensic report, which it used to dismiss former CEO Thabang Moroe. CSA has not made the report available to anyone except its members’ council who have been required to sign non-disclosure agreements in order to view the report but may be allowed to see it in full this weekend. Still, both SASCOC and the country’s sports ministry want access to the report in order to understand the depths of CSA’s governance issues.”CSA’s steadfast refusal to make the forensic report available is puzzling, as it appears that they are unable to self-correct if the report is not made available, not only to its own Members, but also to the media and the public at large since it is a public document,” SASCOC said.

Disputando o campeonato pela segunda vez em sua história, a equipe Sub-23 foi 100% integrada com o trabalho da equipe principal, com jogadores que chegaram a atuar no time de cima na temporada 2020, como o goleiro Kennedy, os zagueiros Vinicius, João Paulo, o lateral-direito Vitor Ricardo e o atacante Coutinho.

Para Marcelo Segurado, executivo de futebol com passagens por Ceará e Goiás, o Brasileirão de Aspirantes é importante para o desenvolvimento dos atletas que buscam uma oportunidade no time profissional, além de trazer maturidade aos jogadores, que muitas vezes não atingem seu ápice até os 20 anos, nas categorias de base.

– Participar do Campeonato de Aspirantes é uma ideia que pode ser muito vantajosa, tanto para os atletas, por terem mais oportunidades, tanto para os clubes, que podem observar melhor os jogadores dentro de uma competição de alto nível. Em termos gerais, o campeonato dá bagagem, maturidade e uma percepção do que é uma competição nacional forte.

A ordem dos confrontos da próxima fase ainda será divulgada, com datas, a partir do dia 19 de agosto, e horários a definir. No Grupo A, Grêmio, Corinthians, Ceará e Figueirense passaram de fase, enquanto no Grupo B, junto com o Fortaleza, classificaram RB Bragantino, Bahia e Avaí. Agora, formando novos grupos, o C e o D, duelarão entre si, em jogo de ida e volta, totalizando seis partidas. Ao final, os dois melhores de cada grupo avançam às semifinais.

Nesta quinta-feira, a CBF confirmou o adiamentodos jogos da 19ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro de times que tiveram atletas convocados pelo Brasil nas Eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo do Qatar. A CBF já havia anunciado que faria reajustes no calendário do futebol brasileiropara não desfalcar os clubes durante a Data FIFA de setembro. Dessa forma a entidade, inclusive, também fez alterações nas partidas válidas pelas quartas de final e semifinais da Copa do Brasil. Por isso, o confronto da volta entre Flamengo e Grêmio será disputado no dia 15 de setembro.

A CBF confirmou o adiamento dos jogos da 19ª rodada de times com convocados pelo Brasil nas Eliminatórias Sul-Americanas. As novas datas ainda não foram definidas.

Vale lembrar que o Flamengo já tem dois jogos adiados no Campeonato Brasileiro por conta de convocações da Seleção Brasileira. No mês de maio deste ano, depois de terquatro jogadores convocados para a seleções principal e, até então, a olímpica, o Rubro-Negrochegou a um consenso com a CBF para o adiamento dos jogos do clube durante a data Fifa.

Assim, os jogos Grêmio x Flamengo, em Porto Alegre, válido pela segunda rodada, e Flamengo x Athletico, em Curitiba, válido pela quarta rodada foram adiados e ainda não foram cumpridos.
