Tottenham are set to move for £24 million forward likened to Gareth Bale

Tottenham are set to take "concrete steps" over signing a £24 million forward likened to club legend Gareth Bale soon, coming after claims he could "easily" play for Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Spurs to make attacking signings after Werner and Gray

This week, Spurs sealed their second signing of the summer transfer window with the arrival of 18-year-old sensation Archie Gray from Leeds United.

The versatile midfielder, who can be deployed in the middle of the park and out wide as a right-back, starred under Daniel Farke in the Championship last season – making 52 appearances in all competitions for Leeds, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion.

By signing Gray in a £40 million deal, which has now been confirmed by Tottenham, they hijacked Brentford's deal for the teenager and landed manager Ange Postecoglou with cover for two positions in his squad.

Emerson Royal continues to be targeted by AC Milan, with some reports previously claiming that Gray could be a replacement for Royal as the exit-bound Brazilian may well swap north London for the San Siro.

Before sealing a deal for Gray, which is an excellent coup by chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange, Spurs' first signing of the window came in the form of a season-long loan extension for Timo Werner.

The German agreed to prolong his stay at N17 after bagging two goals and three assists for them towards the back end of last season. However, Tottenham are expected to make more attacking signings on top of Werner in the coming weeks.

Spurs want to replace Harry Kane with a prolific goalscorer, and Postecoglou is believed to be targeting Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace for the wide area. Forward solutions could come from abroad as well, with a new report linking Tottenham to Galatasaray star Baris Yilmaz.

Tottenham set to move for Baris Yilmaz after Euro 2024

The Turkey international winger, who scored seven goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season, is a crucial asset for Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk.

As expected, the 24-year-old was called up to represent his country at Euro 2024, and his form hasn't gone unnoticed at Spurs. According to Haber, Tottenham are set to take concrete steps over signing Yilmaz after the tournament finishes, with Man United and Brighton also in the mix.

Galatasaray value their star at around £24 million, with former Turkish international Selcuk Inan even claiming Yilmaz, who's been likened to Gareth Bale due to his strength and speed by his former coach Ilker Puren, could play for Real Madrid or Barca.

“I think Baris Alper Yılmaz can play very comfortably for many teams in the Premier League at the moment. He’s a very special player,” he was quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo.

“We worked a lot together. If Barıs Alper improves himself with his final ball, he can easily play for the best clubs in the world such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal.

“He’s a player with a lot of potential. Hopefully, he will get that chance and represent them.”

Aston Villa line up Euro 2024 star who’d be a dream next to Watkins

Aston Villa are preparing for a season of Champions League football after qualifying for the prestigious continental competition with a fourth-place Premier League finish last year.

Unai Emery has created a genuinely high-class outfit that will feel it has the wherewithal to forge another exciting year of football ahead, retaining their place at the top of the division and making an impression overseas.

Despite selling Douglas Luiz to Juventus – a necessary evil to placate PSR – the Villans have made some exciting additions over the past few weeks, and there is more still to come.

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Aston Villa are set to rival Manchester United for the signing of Baris Alper Yilmaz, who enjoyed success with Turkey at Euro 2024.

It's believed that Villa and the Red Devils have already shown an interest in the versatile forward, but that offers from Spain, Italy and Frace are forthcoming. Emery and Co need to move quickly.

Especially given another report claims that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are moving for the €30m (£25m)-rated dynamo.

What Yilmaz would bring to Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins was crowned Aston Villa's Player of the Season last year after a truly exceptional campaign, plundering 27 goals and 13 assists across all competitions.

For a rising star like Yilmaz, having the chance to play alongside such a player must leave him giddy, with the 24-year-old having made his name in his homeland but now attracting interest across Europe, having scored seven goals and supplied 12 more across all competitions last season.

He might not have notched a goal contribution at the Euros but Yilmaz certainly left his mark on the tournament, averaging one key pass, 1.6 dribbles and 5.8 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

Moreover, he's been described as "tremendous fun to watch playing football" by sports broadcaster Stephen Doyle, capable of bringing the spark to the Villa first team.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

For such reasons, the Turk would prove to be a brilliant partner for Watkins, with his creativity and thorny presence for opponents opening up space for the free-scoring striker – who could also return the favour, having been the Premier League's top playmaker last term with 13 assists.

Watkins ranks among the top 3% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and maintains an intense and fluid approach to his forward play, something that could see an exciting partnership born.

Implementing another attacking talent with a range of different qualities could be advantageous to Villa as they look to compete across multiple high-stakes fronts next term.

They've got to get this one done.

Dan Christian's 15-ball fifty supercharges Sydney Sixers

The Sixers plundered 125 off their last 10 overs following a superb opening spell from Dan Worrall

Andrew McGlashan20-Dec-2020A blistering 15-ball half-century by Dan Christian, the second-fastest in BBL history, transformed a sluggish Sydney Sixers innings into a total that proved comfortably match-winning against an Adelaide Strikers side who let things slip away twice in the game.Dan Worrall produced a superb spell of 2 for 12 as the Sixers were held to 2 for 52 in the first half of their innings, but the second ten overs were plundered for 125. The Strikers made the decision to sub out Danny Briggs for the second time this season, bringing in allrounder Liam Scott but he went for 28 in two overs and then made 10 off 12 deliveries. The Strikers’ reply started well with an opening stand of 52 in 4.3 overs, but the innings fell away sharply as offspinner Ben Manenti bowled economically and claimed two key wickets. However, the early fine work of Worrall and the rapid launch to the chase meant that the Strikers were able to claim the Bash Boost point inside five overs.Worrall’s new-ball wobbleFor significant portions of Worrall’s four overs the Sixers batsmen couldn’t lay a bat on him. The 18 dot balls he sent down were the most in his BBL career. Seeing him going so well, he was given his four overs on the bounce by captain Alex Carey and it was the key part in keeping the Sixers to 2 for 52 in 10 overs. He beat Josh Philippe three times in the opening over and was rewarded with his wicket when the opener tried to invent a scoop and was given caught behind off a glove, although Philippe didn’t look impressed. He continued to nip the ball past the edge of Jack Edwards and James Vince, removing the former when Edwards got a thick nick to Carey.Dan Christian smashed a 16-ball 50•Getty Images

Christian’s game-changerHaving limped to 3 for 61 in 12 overs, the Sixers’ innings was changed in a flash by a display of wonderful striking from Christian. He took 22 off the second over from Scott and then Rashid Khan, having been held back until the 10th over, was taken for 16. Three boundaries in the next over against Wes Agar (the first of the Power Surge) took Christian to his 15-ball half-century, second only to Chris Gayle’s 12-ball effort in BBL history. Christian, however, fell the next delivery. A couple of reasonably quiet overs followed, but Jordan Silk, Daniel Hughes and Jason Holder – launching his first delivery in the BBL for six – all struck useful blows.Manenti halts the StrikersPhil Salt and Jake Weatherald provided a flying start to the chase with the most productive four-over powerplay (47) of the season so far with Holder’s second over costing 18. Christian made the breakthrough when Salt got an inside edge into his pad which carried to the wicketkeeper, but it was Manenti’s last three overs (after his first cost 13) that really halted the chase. He had Weatherald caught at deep point and then Matt Renshaw taken from a revere sweep as he claimed 2 for 10 in his second spell.Long way shortAt the midway point of the chase the Strikers had a chance, needing 102 from 60 balls and the Power Surge up their sleeve, but they were severely set back when Carlos Brathwaite nipped one through Carey with his first delivery. Steve O’Keefe also struck in his first over as things quickly got away from the Strikers and the Surge produced just 16 from the two overs. The second of those was bowled by Christian, using the round-the-wicket line and expertly cramping the batsmen for room to cap an outstanding personal performance.

Heather Knight, Alyssa Healy urge ICC to address inequalities in women's game

They call for targeted investment in the game around the world; addition of cricket to Olympics

England captain Heather Knight and Australia wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy have called on the ICC to create “more centralised funds” that could help accelerate and spread the professionalisation of the women’s game.Knight and Healy, two of the world’s premier all-format stars in the women’s game, underlined the need for the ICC to widen its role in addressing infrastructural inequalities in women’s cricket and increase the volume of cricket across more countries.”As players, we understand that cricket countries around the world are in very different financial positions,” Healy and Knight wrote in the FICA Women’s Professional Cricket Global Employment Report 2020. This is a second such review conducted by FICA, after the inaugural edition was released in October 2018, two years after the female players were formally brought under the ambit of FICA.”Having said that, there needs to be equal commitment from all countries to addressing barriers, and promoting and investing in the women’s game if we are to achieve gender equity on the global stage and in individual cricket countries,” they further wrote.”At [the] global level, we think there is an opportunity for the ICC to prioritise increased and targeted investment in the game around the world, not just in global events. This could include for example more centralised funds to assist the professionalisation of the game in more countries and to ensure more cricket can be played.”Healy and Knight’s recommendation threw into sharp focus the larger sense of uncertainty around the women’s game borne out by the 2020 report, a 31-page document published on Monday. As per the report, based on the findings of the 2019 FICA players’ online electronic survey, 46% of its respondents specifically highlighted remuneration as the foremost concern.”Two-thirds of players feel insecure in their cricketing employment, whilst a further 81% would favour contract and job security over playing in different competitions. This anxiety is caused by limited, short-term and insecure contracts, with 82% of women cricketers currently on contracts that are one year or less in duration,” the report stated. There has been increased broadcast exposure of global tournaments, leagues have flourished in Australia and England – first with KSL and now potentially with The Hundred. Yet, the study identifies women’s cricket as “an exclusive sport” as it comprises “a very small pool of players worldwide” at the elite level. It puts the number of full-time professionals worldwide in 2018-19 at “just 119 (compared to over 400 professional male cricketers in England and Wales alone). Also, during the report period, there were a small number of semi-professional contracts available in just three countries: Australia, England and New Zealand.” This is down in part, according to the report, the “flight of talent” which typically sees a “worrying number of players who opt to leave the game.””Players often play cricket alongside their studies before going onto pursue professional careers elsewhere. This could manifest itself in a general lower standard of play as a consequence of a lack of competition for places, as well as an increasing ability gap between the top players and the rest,” the report said.”The seven-week Kia Super League (KSL) tournament was the only semiprofessional structure below the national team, but it’s 90 contracted players were often forced to find a supplementary income to be able to participate in the competition.”Alyssa Healy (L) hasn’t been afraid to voice out against governance issues in women’s cricket•Getty Images

ODIs ‘are all-important’; Olympics desiredWhile most national boards and the ICC have through the past decade identified the T20 format as the most appropriate vehicle to promote and grow the women’s game, the review shed light on the players’ appetite for the 50-over game.”In the absence of regular Test cricket,” the report stated, “and despite the continued emergence of T20, 63% of players view ODI’s as the most important format of the game. In 2018-19, only 39 women’s ODI’s took place (compared to 128 men’s) – that equates to just 21% of the scheduled women’s international cricket for that year.”As far as Test cricket goes, though, the report doesn’t offer any specific insights on players’ stance on the gradual petering out of the longest format, especially when taking in account that in the review period – the 2018-19 season – the lack of an Ashes series meant no Test cricket was played by women. This, while total international fixtures in 2018 spiked to 186, more than doubling from 85 in 2017.Additional findings in the report also underscored that 81% of survey respondents highlighted the inclusion of women’s cricket in the summer Olympics as something they would like to see in the near future.”Along with cricket’s recent inclusion in the Commonwealth Games, and provided it fits in a well-structured global calendar, involvement in the Olympic Games would provide much-needed exposure as well as a boost to the amount of scheduled international women’s cricket on offer.”

Bigger coup than Onana: Aston Villa learn price tag for £96k-p/w target

Aston Villa are reaping the rewards of securing qualification for the Champions League next season courtesy of their fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

This has allowed Unai Emery to target players who were perhaps out of their price range before, or simply weren’t interested in a move to the Midlands.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

Combine this with the fact they will be set to receive a financial windfall due to partaking in Europe’s premier club competition and this could be the start of a wonderful era for the club.

Players such as Lewis Dobbin, Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley have joined Villa, adding some quality all over the pitch, but it is their most recent transfer which managed to get heads turning…

Aston Villa splash the cash to sign Amadou Onana

Such is the lure of Villa these days that Emery is able to bring a player such as Amadou Onana to the club, fending off the likes of Manchester United in the process.

He may have cost £50m, but considering how impressive he has been for Everton recently, plus plenty of room to grow and develop under the Spaniard, a move to the Midlands could be the perfect choice for the Belgian.

For his country at Euro 2024, Onana was one of the standout performers. Starting all four of Belgium’s matches, the midfielder averaged a pass success rate of 90% while averaging 0.8 successful dribbles per game – a success rate of 100% – and winning a remarkable 88% of his ground duels throughout the tournament.

Belgium may have faltered at the last 16 stage, but Onana’s displays proved that he can shine at the very highest level and this will stand Emery in good stead when the Champions League fixtures come around.

Belgium's Amadou Onana

The transfer was a real statement signing, no doubt about that. Could the experienced coach perhaps secure an even bigger coup than the 22-year-old in the coming weeks, however, with Villa showing plenty of interest in another Euro 2024 star.

Aston Villa eyeing up move for La Liga superstar

It is certainly no secret that Villa are keen on bringing Atlético Madrid forward João Félix to the club this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Felix is the “dream target” for Emery between now and the end of the transfer window. A move to sign the Portuguese gem would be a much bigger coup than the deal for Onana, especially considering what a high-profile talent he is – having once cost Atleti roughly £113m.

A new update regarding Felix’s future has been released as Emery now knows exactly how much he will have to pay in order to bring the player to Villa.

It is clear that he wants to move away from Atlético Madrid this summer as he was pictured training on his own following his return from holiday. According to Spanish outlet AS, Diego Simeone will demand a fee of at least €60m (£50m) in order for the club to sell him.

Barcelona's Joao Felix

The report goes on to state that Barcelona are expected to make an effort to try and retain his services as he spent last term on loan at the club, meaning Emery has some stiff competition.

Having sold Moussa Diaby for around £50m, it means the Spaniard might have some money to play with in the coming weeks. The key question now is, will Felix want to join the project at Villa?

Joao Felix’s season in numbers

It would be fair to say that since Felix joined Atlético back in the summer of 2019, he hasn’t quite lived up to his staggering £113m price tag.

The £96k-per-week gem was hardly prolific during his four full seasons at the club, scoring only 34 goals in 131 appearances, adding a further 18 assists.

He spent the entire 2023/24 season on loan at Barcelona in a bid to return to the sort of form which led Simeone to spend over £100m on the player, and he enjoyed some success at the Catalan club.

Felix played 44 times for Xavi last term, registering 16 goal contributions – ten goals and six assists – as the club failed to win a major trophy.

Among his teammates, the 24-year-old did rank fourth for goals and assists (ten) in La Liga, while also ranking second for shots on target per game (0.8) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (one), impressing across a range of metrics.

What Joao Felix could offer Aston Villa

Emery would deploy Felix in the number ten slot, operating just behind striker Ollie Watkins, allowing the pair to flourish.

Felix is a superb ball carrier, which could see him progress into dangerous positions on a regular basis, creating chance after chance for Watkins.

Aston Villa now in active contact to sign "dream target for Unai Emery"

The Villans’ summer could yet get even better.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 25, 2024

In the Spanish top flight last term, he ranked in the top 13% for carries into the final third (3.10) per 90, while also ranking in the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area (6.08) per 90, showing the threat he carries when on the ball in the opposition third.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig described Felix as being “an absolute nightmare for defenders” a few years ago, and he could be a wonderful addition to the Villa squad next season.

Another bonus for Emery should Felix join this summer would be his experience in the Champions League. The Portuguese attacking midfielder has played 41 times in the competition, scoring ten goals and grabbing three assists.

That experience is yet another reason why the one-time Benfica man could prove to be Villa's most exciting deal of the summer – even eclipsing the £50m outlay on Onana – with opportunities to land just elite talents not coming around every day.
