West Brom struck gold on £0 signing who's worth more than Thomas-Asante

Carlos Corberan has plenty of promotion near misses on his managerial resume to date in the Championship, having guided both Huddersfield Town and West Bromwich Albion into the play-offs, with the Terriers even getting to Wembley under his reign only for Nottingham Forest to spoil their potential promotion winning party.

The popular Spaniard will hope he can successfully steer the Baggies to promotion this time around, albeit he will have to try and pull off this almighty feat without Brandon Thomas-Asante up top.

Thomas-Asante was seemingly on his way to Hull City, but has since sealed a move to Coventry City following a late hijack, raking in a reported fee of around £2m-£3m.

This will be a blow, but not one that will completely derail the Baggies going forward, knowing that they have plenty of firepower in attack away from the former Salford City man, with the likes of Jed Wallace staying put.

Jed Wallace's time at West Brom

Wallace has been a consistent presence in and around the first team ever since he joined the building back in 2022, only missing four regular Championship games in the process.

The former Millwall man relocating to the Hawthorns will be seen as a masterstroke from the powers that be at the West Midlands club, therefore, with the experienced attacker also joining the club as a free agent, before going on to be a reliable creative force and goalscorer.

Last campaign, the “unbelievable” Baggies captain – as he was once described by ex-Sheffield United defender Jack O’Connell – would pick up six goals and five assists as Corberan’s side eyed an opportunity to break back into the Premier League, with the West Brom boss playing him all over the attacking ranks dependent on the clash ahead.

Wallace would line up in six different positions in the forward ranks come the end of the league schedule, with the ex-Millwall attacker even drafted in to play in Thomas-Asante’s lone striker spot on occasion, with six of his goal contributions for the season coming about when playing as this makeshift centre-forward.

Therefore, if the Championship promotion hopefuls do end up losing Thomas-Asante shortly, they could rely on their versatile 30-year-old to lead the line and do a competent job.

Moreover, Wallace is more valuable to Corberan and Co when you consider his transfer value up against the departing star’s own increased price tag, with the seasoned EFL figure the most valuable asset in the Baggies camp currently, according to Football Transfers.

Wallace's transfer value in 2024

According to the site, the adaptable 5 foot 10 forward is worth in the region of £3.9m, with his value steadily rising and rising ever since entering the building for nothing only two years ago.

That makes him the most worthwhile asset to Corberan at this moment in time, with Thomas-Asante leaving for £3m also seen as West Brom advancing another player’s career, but this time smartly cashing in, with the 25-year-old once worth just £300k when signed from League Two.

Glancing at their respective numbers from the 2023/24 campaign, West Brom will also believe they can attract a more clinical finisher to the club over Thomas-Asante, especially with this added injection of £3m in the bank, with the ex-Salford man underperforming when it comes to his xG and missing a whole host of big chances at a hefty 18.

Whoever does become West Brom’s next leading man in attack will know he will have chances galore put on a plate for him with Wallace next to him, as the Baggies aim to win promotion this season to come, and not just settle for being nearly men again.

Mitch Perry makes his mark by removing Steven Smith as Victoria's bowlers dominate New South Wales

Moises Henriques played a lone hand making 67 as New South Wales were bundled out for 165

Victoria youngster Mitch Perry starred with three wickets including the prized scalp of Steven Smith as New South Wales were bundled out for just 165 on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash at the SCG.Moises Henriques showed why he remains in Test calculations playing a lone hand for the Blues with a composed 67 on a day where Victoria dominated proceedings after skipper Peter Handscomb won the toss and elected to bowl.Openers Nic Maddinson and Marcus Harris put on a rollicking unbeaten half-century stand in the final hour of the day to put the visitors firmly in control.James Pattinson bowled a brisk opening spell and removed Nick Larkin cheaply before Perry claimed the biggest scalp of his short career. He tested Smith’s patience wide of off stump before finding his outside edge with a superb delivery that angled in and shaped away.Pattinson followed up with an even better delivery to breach the defence of Daniel Hughes from around the wicket to leave the Blues reeling at 4 for 46.Henriques showed the value of soft hands and playing late on a pitch with plenty of sideways movement. He struck just four boundaries in his 67 and absorbed 170 balls in the process. He watched six team-mates come and go at the other end with only Peter Nevill and Sean Abbott reaching double figures.Only a delay for a fire alarm halted Victoria’s progress. Perry accounted for Nevill and later bagged Nathan Lyon to finish with three wickets while Jon Holland cleaned up the tail to bag three of his own including Henriques, whose patience finally wore thin. He was the last man out, stumped by a mile trying to hit Holland out of the ground.Maddinson and Harris rode their luck against a Test-quality attack. They were beaten repeatedly by Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc but punished anything fractionally loose. Maddinson sat deep in his crease and played some cracking pull and hook shots, including one high into the stands, before punching the overcorrections through the covers as he raced to 43 not out off just 36 balls.

Offer made: Chelsea moving to sign £25m star who’d be perfect for Palmer

In the space of 12 months, Cole Palmer has gone from a promising youngster, to one of the most talented players in the country after his phenomenal first season at Chelsea.

The attacker arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £40m deal from Manchester City last summer, with Palmer moving to West London to gain more consistent first-team minutes to aid his development.

His move to the Blues has catapulted the 22-year-old to stardom, scoring 22 Premier League goals last season and finishing the campaign as the division’s second-highest goalscorer behind former teammate, Erling Haaland.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Palmer’s subsequent form for Chelsea earned him a call-up to the England national side for Euro 2024, where the youngster scored a stunning equaliser in the final defeat to Spain.

Every Blues fan will be hoping that he can build on his excellent form over the last couple of months, with one new addition potentially helping the Englishman in 2024/25.

Chelsea make bid to sign German talent

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have submitted a concrete offer to sign Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier this summer.

Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier.

Aston Villa have also made an offer for the 21-year-old talent, with Bayer Leverkusen still in the race for his signature.

Plettenberg claims that Beier’s current contract has a €30m (£25m) release clause, which could be triggered by the Blues, but it’s unknown how much their current offer is worth.

The youngster produced some phenomenal stats in the Bundesliga last season, with his figures perfectly falling into the hands of Palmer who could become unplayable with the addition of Beier.

Why Beier could make Palmer unplayable for Chelsea

Despite featuring with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk at the top end of the pitch for Chelsea, Palmer struggled to form a settled partnership with neither of the duo able to secure a regular first-team spot.

However, Beier’s potential arrival at Stamford Bridge could allow the English international to form a deadly partnership with the German, who’s capable of featuring across the entire front line.

The Hoffenheim talent registered 17 goal contributions in the Bundesliga last season, proving to be a constant threat in attacking areas.

Beier, who’s previously been dubbed “sensational” by journalist Zach Lowy, also produced some key figures that would allow Palmer to further increase his already impressive goalscoring tally from 2023/24.

Chelsea player Cole Palmer

With the duo both in the form of their life during the previous season, it could be a deadly partnership that could take Chelsea back to the Champions League places in 2024/25.

£25m in today’s market is a bargain for a player of his quality, also following in the club’s current philosophy of signing talents who can make an immediate and long-term impact at Stamford Bridge.

Rajasthan Royals part ways with head coach Andrew McDonald

The IPL franchise said the decision was arrived at “mutually” with the Australian coach

Daniel Brettig and Nagraj Gollapudi21-Feb-2021

Rajasthan Royals had appointed Andrew McDonald as their head coach ahead of the 2020 season of the IPL•BCCI

Andrew McDonald has moved out as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals after being with the team for just one season of the IPL, despite having signed a three-year deal in 2019. The development comes in the wake of the Royals appointing former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara as the team director.ESPNcricinfo understands that the franchise has been trying to negotiate a new role with McDonald, who played very little part in the team’s recent acquisitions at the 2021 IPL auction. “Rajasthan Royals and its Head Coach Andrew McDonald have mutually decided to move in different directions with regards to the leadership structure,” the Royals said in a media statement on Sunday. As part of that, the Royals have also decided not to seek a replacement for McDonald, as they expect Sangakkara to double up as the chief coach. Sangakkara would be assisted by the assistant coach of West Indies’ white-ball teams Trevor Penney, who has been appointed as lead assistant coach. The rest of the Royals coaching staff will comprise Zubin Bharucha (strategy, development and performance director), Sairaj Bahutule (spin-bowling coach), Rob Cassell (fast-bowling coach) and Dishank Yagnik (fielding coach). The franchise has also moved out Amol Muzumdar from batting coach to “out-of-season” high-performance batting coach.Related

IPL 2021 league stage could be held entirely in Mumbai

At last week’s auction, the Royals picked up South African allrounder Chris Morris, who became the most expensive individual player bought at an IPL auction, Shivam Dube, Mustafizur Rahman and Liam Livingstone, among others. McDonald, currently serving as head coach of the Australia T20I squad that is in New Zealand, was largely occupied with national duty at the time of the auction.McDonald’s position came under the scanner after the Royals finished bottom of the table in the 2020 IPL, which was held in the UAE because of a difficult Covid-19-related situation in India. Incidentally, it was back in 2018 that the Royals had last made the IPL playoffs, and they had played without a designated head coach then. Bharucha was the head of cricket that season, with Shane Warne the team’s mentor, and Bahutule, Muzumdar and Yagnik members of the coaching staff.McDonald’s exit is part of a number of changes the Royals have made recently. Sanju Samson was appointed the captain after the franchise decided to release Steven Smith, who led the franchise over the last two seasons.Smith’s performances as captain and batsman were criticised in an end-of-season review after the last IPL. Smith struggled to make an impact with the bat last season, having started the tournament as an opener and then gone down to the middle order, later admitting he had failed to “find my hands” in terms of feeling comfortable at the batting crease until he returned to Australia duty in the home ODI series against India.McDonald’s appointment had been something of a game-changer when it was confirmed in late 2019 that he would be permitted to coach the Royals as well as the Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, while also serving as senior assistant to Justin Langer with the Australia national team. That mix of roles was sold as an advantage for the Australian set-up, but McDonald is now going to have more time on his hands at home this year rather than heading to India for the IPL.

RCB bring in Finn Allen as Josh Philippe's replacement

Uncapped New Zealander a like-for-like swap after the Australian makes himself unavailable for the entire 2021 season

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have signed uncapped New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Finn Allen as a like-for-like replacement for Josh Philippe who will miss the entire IPL 2021 for personal reasons.Allen, who had initially found no takers in the auction last month, had listed his base price at INR 20 lakh – identical to that of Philippe who was snapped up by the Royal Challengers at the IPL 2020 auction. Like Philippe, Allen can open the batting and keep wickets if needed.”The RCB management is disappointed to lose a player of Josh’s calibre for this IPL season, but at the same time we fully understand, respect and support his decision of excluding himself from the tournament,” the franchise said in a statement. “We had to select the next best option from the list of players registered for the IPL auction, at the same base price as Josh (20 lakh). We spent a great amount of time working through that potential list and have selected Finn Allen as a top-order batting replacement.”Allen, the 21-year-old Auckland batsman who had moved to Wellington ahead of this domestic season, had a bumper Super Smash 2020-21, his chart-topping 512 runs at a strike rate of almost 194 powering the Firebirds to the title. All up, Allen clattered 25 sixes in the tournament – the most by any player – and pulled off a variety of trick shots, including an outrageous switch-hit off New Zealand and Northern Knights’ premier spinner Mitchell Santner.Related

Finn Allen the breakout star in Super Smash

A day out of the Super Smash final, Allen had no expectations of an IPL call-up although he conceded that featuring in the league would be a bit of a dream come true.”For me, there are no expectations,” Allen had told ESPNcricinfo. “It has kind of always been that way for me – I’m just going out there and enjoying what I am doing. Just trying to win the title for Wellington, and if more than that comes out of it, it would be awesome. Obviously going to the IPL would be pretty amazing – that’s almost my dream for a long time now, so yeah hopefully get lucky and get picked up. But, obviously no expectations, and if it doesn’t happen, there’s always the future.”A day after lifting the Super Smash trophy, Allen made it to the New Zealand T20I squad although only as cover for senior opener Martin Guptill. After Guptill cleared his fitness test, Allen linked up with Wellington again and continued his stellar form with a maiden List A hundred. During his knock of 128 off 59 balls, he drew level with Peter Fulton for the fastest hundred (50 balls) by a New Zealander in the format as Wellington posted 427 for 8 – another New Zealand List A record.

RCB director of cricket Mike Hesson, who had closely followed the New Zealand domestic season, was impressed with Allen’s ball-striking in the Super Smash.”From a New Zealand point of view, once again I’m not so sure about Colin Munro right now,” Hesson had told Ian Smith on in February. “I think he has played a lot of cricket and once again you what he can do. You can bring him in if you need to. Finn Allen is the exciting one, isn’t he? It’s a matter of whether you can fit him in there…often players need to have a breakout season like that just to get their first opportunity before you find out that they’re actually really good.”And New Zealand has done that with (Devon) Conway – obviously he’s been knocking on the door for a long time – and Will Young is another fine player who has had to bide his time. But, if we think back to when Martin Guptill made his debut – he was young and on the back of some really, really good domestic performances to the point where he needed that opportunity. And Finn Allen, for me, there’s no better time to do it. He’s been exceptional at the top of the order and once it’s about who you going to leave out.”At RCB, Allen will now unite with Hesson and Kyle Jamieson, who was signed for INR 15 crore at the auction.Allen’s maiden IPL deal means he could potentially be unavailable for New Zealand’s three-match T20I series at home against Bangladesh, starting on March 28. IPL 2021 is due to begin on April 9, with RCB scheduled to play their league fixtures in Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. The franchise’s pre-season camp is already underway at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Liverpool have been tracking giant 6 foot 4 defensive midfielder for a year

Liverpool are among a "host of clubs" interested in signing an exciting young midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have had a frustratingly quiet summer in the transfer market, with not a single player added to Arne Slot's squad, much to the chagrin of many supporters. It looked as though Martin Zubimendi was going to come in as a superb midfield addition, but he has ended up committing his future to Real Sociedad, acting as a big disappointment at Anfield.

Time is now running out for Liverpool to make signings this summer, but they are at least still being backed to make some important additions to the squad. Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is one such figure, potentially being seen as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson.

Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri

Meanwhile, the Reds are reportedly among the clubs who have been offered legendary Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, but given his age and the type of player Slot likes, in terms of an ability to press and cover ground, it would be a huge surprise if he sealed a move to Anfield.

Liverpool also appear to be pushing hard for the signing of Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who could be seen as the heir to Alisson between the sticks. The 23-year-old may be loaned out immediately, in order to be a regular elsewhere, before eventually coming in as first-choice.

Liverpool in the race to sign midfielder

Writing on X, Bailey claimed that Liverpool are in the mix to sign young Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl this summer, but are far from alone in tracking him.

In Bailey's report for HITC, he goes on to say that the 18-year-old's 6 foot 4 frame "makes him stand-out as he features in central midfield but can also play a holding role", adding that Liverpool "have been aware of Hjerto-Dahl for more than 12-months". The likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham, Everton, Fulham, Sheffield United and Coventry City are "all watching him".

Even the most knowledgeable Reds supporter could be forgiven for not having heard of the teenage midfielder, but it is always encouraging to see highly-rated young players linked with moves to Anfield. Hjerto-Dahl has already won 17 caps for Norway across four different youth age groups, suggesting that he has been a prominent international performer throughout his fledgling career to date.

Not only that, but he now already has 44 appearances to his name for Tromso, despite his tender years, scoring eight goals and registering two assists in the process. To have made such an impact already says so much about his maturity and ability, and Slot could view him as one for the future if Liverpool get a deal over the line.
