Earlier, Klaassen and van Beek picked up three wickets each to bundle out Ireland for 163

Stephan Myburgh hit six fours and three sixes during his knock•Peter Della Penna
Fred Klaassen and Logan van Beek picked up three wickets each before Stephan Myburgh anchored the chase of 164 with a 111-ball 74 to give Netherlands a 2-1 series win over Ireland in the third ODI in Utrecht. After opting to bat, Ireland were jolted by left-arm seamer Klaassen, who castled Kevin O’Brien for a duck on the fourth ball of the day. In his next over, Klaassen had Paul Stirling caught behind to make it 6 for 2. Andy Balbirnie didn’t last long either and fell to Vivian Kingma in the tenth over.At 28 for 3, Harry Tector and George Dockrell got together and tried to revive the innings. The two added 89 off 138 balls for the fourth wicket before van Beek provided Netherlands with the breakthrough by bowling Dockrell for 40. Soon after, he had Tector too as the batter tried to push at a length ball only to nick it behind for a 100-ball 58.From the remaining batters, only Simi Singh (21* off 35) reached double digits as Ireland lost their last seven wickets for 46 runs and were bowled out for 163 in 49.2 overs.Myburgh started the chase by dispatching the first ball of the innings, bowled by Barry McCarthy, for a six over deep square leg. Alongside Max O’Dowd, he broke the back of the chase by adding 66 in 14.4 overs for the first wicket.O’Dowd scored 36, with five fours, before Singh breached his defence. Scott Edwards fell soon afterwards and when Josh Little dismissed Musa Ahmad, Netherlands still needed 68. But with more than 25 overs left, Myburgh and Bas de Leede had the luxury to play out a few overs. The two brought down the equation to 30 required from 63 balls before Myburgh hit offspinner Andy McBrine for 4, 4 and 6 off successive deliveries. With six required for victory, Myburgh tried to slog-sweep Singh only to be bowled. Netherlands lost de Leede and Pieter Seelaar too in the next two overs but the result was a mere formality by then. In the 46th over, van Beek finally sealed the win with a four off Singh.
Dour morning progress sets tempo as Yorkshire are made to pay for first-day errors
Paul Edwards28-May-2021
Keaton Jennings reached his fifty before lunch on the second day•Getty Images
“The test of a first-rate intelligence,” wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald, “is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” It may just be possible that one or two Yorkshire supporters who watched the second day of this Roses match now have a better idea what that peerless chronicler of the Jazz Age was on about. They will, of course, have loathed the fact that Lancashire consolidated their already strong position in this game, courtesy of Keaton Jennings’ first century in red-ball cricket since the Galle Test in 2018 and Luke Wells’ maiden first-class fifty for his new county. At the same time there was a gloriously eventless quality about Jennings and Wells’ 175-run partnership for the second wicket that even White Rose diehards might have appreciated. At least, they might have observed tartly, there were no damn-fool cut shots inside the first five overs, no Monty Python run-outs, no scoreboards from Hammer movies.Instead of that ungodly stuff, balls were left alone or they were defended stoutly or they were nudged for singles as 57 runs were scored in the 31 overs of the morning session. Even Arthur “Ticker” Mitchell might have approved although that redoubtably miserable old bugger would have torn his heart out on the square at Park Avenue rather than admit as much. The tempo of the contest was perfectly fitting for a contest still wreathed in tradition.Until three wickets fell in the space of four overs deep in the afternoon session, the cricket was delightfully serene as Jennings and Wells laid the foundations of Lancashire’s dominance in over 66 overs of pure concentration and hard-learned technique. Within reason Lancashire’s batsmen were content to give Yorkshire’s fresh bowlers the first hour or two of play, secure in the knowledge that the final session would belong to their team if they could keep wickets in hand. The two left-handers, both of whom are 6ft 4ins tall and take up their stances with their backsides jutting toward square leg, had a clear idea of the balls that required their attention and those that did not. After an hour’s batting Lancashire had scored 30 runs in 16 overs but there was no doubt which side was the happier. Patterson even tried to get the ball changed but the umpires had none of it. Later in the morning, Dom Bess held the ball between his index finger and thumb as though trying to distort its shape with the power of his will. Nothing worked. Yorkshire bowled decently in the morning session but they did not disturb theof two batsmen who knew their roles better than any of Patterson’s specialist batsmen had known theirs. When Jennings is out of form, his malfunctions look severe enough to end his career; when he bats as he did yesterday, he appears as well-organised, albeit unconventional, as most batsmen in the domestic game. It will not have bothered him a jot that Lancashire scored two fewer runs in four more overs than Yorkshire had managed in the first session of the game. That statistic was of little account when set beside the wicket count from the two mornings, 7-0 – or, indeed, the bonus point score at the end of the day: Lancashire: 6, Yorkshire: 1.Related

Both Jennings and Wells showed greater intent on the resumption but their acceleration also seemed carefully controlled. Yorkshire took the new ball with the score on 214 for 1 and the next ten overs were the most eventful of the day. Jennings reached his century when he cover-drove Thompson to the boundary and he celebrated the occasion with three more fine fours in the first four balls of Coad’s next over. However, he then pushed defensively at the next delivery but merely edged a catch to Tom Kohler-Cadmore at first slip and departed for 114. Four balls later Kohler-Cadmore’s safe hands were again put to good use when Wells tried and failed to take his bat away from a ball bowled by Jordan Thompson. The fact that he had played a vital part in Lancashire’s dominance clearly did not console Wells. Although, like Jennings, he acknowledged the applause that came from all corners of Old Trafford he was clearly disappointed to have got out when a century was beginning to beckon. Such an approach will endear him to his coaches. There was some mystification in Hove when Wells was released by Sussex last September but seemingly little hesitation in Lancashire about signing him. The fact that he bats first-wicket-down suggests the regard in which he is held. The rest of the day was a trifle anti-climactic although the scorers will not agree. Thompson continued to strive mightily in Yorkshire’s cause, for he knows no other faith and no other way of playing his cricket. He was presented with Liam Livingstone’s wicket and later took that of Luke Wood to finish with 3 for 64.But the main entertainment of the evening was provided by Josh Bohannon and Dane Vilas, both of whom hit Bess for straight sixes. Bohannon’s effort was a monster which smacked against the window of Lancashire’s official scorer, Chris Rimmer, alarming this calmest of men and even perturbing Garry Morgan, his fine assistant, who is a Sheffielder and more used to such dramas. For his part, Bohannon opted to bat for Saturday morning once Vilas had skied Coad to Kohler-Cadmore and departed for 45. The Boltonian ended the day unbeaten on 47 and no doubt has plans to traumatise more Yorkshiremen tomorrow.
In the years since Arsène Wenger finally hung up his comically oversized jacket, Arsenal fans have been through a lot.
They've seen their team languish in midtable for two years, reach a Europa League Final only to be pummelled by Chelsea, and lift an FA Cup that seemed like an impossible task at the time.
Since the great Frenchman left North London, the Gunners' faithful have also experienced life under two permanent managers: Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta.
Now, the latter has been undeniably more successful at the Emirates and stands a very good chance of lifting some major silverware with the club in the coming years, but the former did get a few things right during his tenure, notably securing the services of someone who'd go on to be a star in Arteta's defence today.
Arsenal's defensive stars
Arsenal have been able to run Manchester City close for two seasons on the spin now because, under Arteta, they have become a relatively complete team, one able to control games in the midfield and punish opposition defences with their incredibly gifted attacking players like Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and even Kai Havertz.
With that said, the pièce de résistance of Arteta's team is arguably the defence, as across 38 games last season, the North Londoners produced the best defence in the league, conceding just 29 goals and keeping a staggering 18 clean sheets in the process.
What should worry opposing fans is that with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori this summer, the Gunners' defensive unit has become even more robust, although for as talented as the Italian is, he'll likely have to share starts with Jurrien Timber and maybe even Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.
However, there is no debate over who should be starting in the other three positions. For example, Ben White has locked down the opposite flank for a couple of seasons now.
While he initially played at centre-back following his £50m arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2021, he has become one of the best full-backs in the league, making 93 appearances for the North Londoners there.
To his left is the man mountain, Gabriel Magalhães, who, following his £27m move to the Emirates in 2020, has silenced his critics and become an incredibly accomplished centre-back, capable of bullying attackers off the ball and playing a fantastic pass to the feet of his own forwards to pick up an assist.
Moreover, the Brazilian international also has a knack for scoring goals himself, and in his 154 appearances in the Premier League, he has found the back of the net on 14 occasions, which is quite remarkable for someone in his position.
Now, the final player, who is a nailed-on starter in Arteta's defence, was signed by Emery, and while he wasn't cheap, his valuation has skyrocketed since.
William Saliba's valuation in 2024
Yes, the player in question is, of course, William Saliba, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2019 from Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne for a fee of around £27m.
Now, for a player who was just 19 years old at the time, that's an undeniably sizeable fee, but in the years since, the Gunners' decision to pull the trigger has been more than justified on and off the pitch, as, according to Transfermarkt, the Frenchman is now worth at least €80m, which converts to about £68m.
That represents a 151% increase on the fee paid by the North Londoners five years ago, although if it came down to it, we wouldn't be surprised to see them ask for in excess of £100m for the 23-year-old's services, and they would be entirely justified in doing so.
For example, after spending three seasons on loan in Ligue 1, the "world-class" defender, as dubbed by teammate Gabriel, came into Arteta's lineup for the opening game of the 22/23 season, immediately looked like the best centre-back on the pitch and was even named Man of the Match.
In all, the Bondy-born monster has 86 appearances for the Premier League runners-up, and so long as the club can keep a hold of him, there is no reason to think that he won't be one of the first names on the teamsheet for some time to come.

Ultimately, Arsenal have constructed a genuinely incredible defence over the last few years, and while the likes of Gabriel and White are massively important, there is a sense that with enough money, they could be replaced in some way or another, but when it comes to Saliba, that's not the case, and that is an indication of just how talented he is.

Following her key role in India levelling the T20I series against England, allrounder says she has learnt to “read and handle situations” better
PTI12-Jul-20212:05
Deepti Sharma: ‘Leading from the front gives you special confidence’
Deepti Sharma, one of the chief architects of India’s eight-run win over England in the second women’s T20I, says she has got better at reading and handling difficult match situations and enjoys playing under pressure.Chasing 149, England were cruising with opener Tammy Beaumont (59) and captain Heather Knight (30) in the middle but Sharma was involved in the dismissal of both the batters – the former lbw, and the latter via an unusual run-out – off successive balls in the 14th over to bring India back into the match.Related

Report: India spark England slide to keep series alive
“I like playing in pressure situations, whether it is in any position in the team – batting, bowling, or fielding. As an allrounder, I just want to contribute to my department and take the team forward,” Sharma said at the post-match virtual press conference. “I like leading from the front, like in domestic tournaments when I play as a senior player and win matches for my team, that gives different confidence.”When you bring that confidence here, of course this platform is not easy but it depends on how you handle it. I now know how to read and handle situations, so I find it easy to play because I know I can handle things easily now.”After that 14th over, England were left needing 43 off the last 36 balls with six wickets in hand, but they fell short – a fatal slide had been triggered by Sharma.India penalised for slow over rate
India were fined 20 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over rate. They were ruled one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC said in a release on Monday.
India T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Ian Blackwell and Paul Baldwin, third umpire Sue Redfern and fourth umpire Tim Robinson levelled the charge. Phil Whitticase of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction.
“It was a crucial over and crucial wicket [of Beaumont]. Earlier [in the same over] also we had taken a DRS [review against Beaumont] but we were unlucky [as the had ball pitched outside off],” Sharma said. “Next, when I bowled [Beaumont was given lbw, England reviewed and this time] it was umpire’s call and it was hitting the stumps. It gave us a lot of confidence.”We bounced back after that and then the run-out helped us to pull back the match.”The 23-year-old also contributed with the bat, scoring 24 off 27 balls as India posted 148 for 4. Opener Shafali Verma (48 off 38) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (31 off 25) were the other major contributors.”When I was batting, I was looking forward to building a partnership and also score six to seven runs per over,” Sharma said. “That was the mindset but we couldn’t score as much as we wanted. We had got a good start, we thought we can score 160 but the 140 total wasn’t bad because we knew as a bowling unit, we bowl in partnership and we were supporting each other and we could defend the total.”She said the conditions were slightly difficult for batting at the County Ground in Hove. “Actually wicket was holding up a bit. In the last match, ball was coming onto the bat but today it was holding, it was slightly slow off the pitch, so it was little difficult batting.”With the series tied at 1-1, India will take on England in the third and final T20I on July 14 to wrap up their UK tour.

Leeds United bounced back to winning ways in the Championship with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff City in Wales on Saturday.
The Whites needed a strong response to their 1-0 defeat to Burnley and that is exactly what they provided with an excellent performance this weekend.
Daniel Farke’s side enjoyed a staggering 79% of the ball and racked up 2.74 xG, creating five ‘big chances’ in total, which suggests that they were, perhaps, unfortunate to only score twice.
Largie Ramazani opened the scoring for Leeds in the 30th minute, just seven minutes after Joel Bagan was sent off, and Joel Piroe came off the bench to score the second goal in the 87th minute.
Farke did “storm down the tunnel” with his side 1-0 up at the break, possibly due to his team not making the most of more of the opportunities that they created against ten-man Cardiff.
However, the German head coach will surely have left Wales content with how Ramazani performed on his full debut for the club on the wing.
Largie Ramazani's performance in numbers
The 23-year-old forward was snapped up from Spanish side Almeria in the summer transfer window and came into the starting XI on Saturday to replace the injured Manor Solomon.
It was a big chance for him to make his mark and make a name for himself in front of the away following, which is exactly what he did in the 30th minute.
Mateo Joseph smartly knocked a through ball onto the winger and that sent him racing towards goal, before firing a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
However, the Belgian gem missed a huge chance to double his tally for the afternoon just minutes later. Wilfried Gnonto played a sublime ball across the box to Ramazani in front of goal, unchallenged, from ten yards out and his shot came straight back off the goalkeeper.
The ex-Almeria star did leave a bit to be desired from his physical work during the game. He lost three of his four duels on the ground and all three of his aerial contests, which shows that the Cardiff defenders found it too easy to outmuscle him.
Ramazani also ended the match with one chance created and zero ‘big chances’ created and this suggests that he needs to work on his ability to make things happen for his teammates if he wants to nail down a starting position on the left wing on a regular basis.
The summer signing was not the real hero of the match for Farke, though, as defensive midfielder Ethan Ampadu controlled the game with his performance in Wales.
Ethan Ampadu's performance in numbers
The Leeds captain lined up in the middle of the park next to Ilia Gruev and produced an outstanding display to help his side dominate the match.
Of course, the red card for Bagan after 23 minutes, for fouling Gnonto as the last man, helped the Whites to hold the bulk of the possession, playing against ten men, but Ampadu’s dominant performance also played a big part.
The Wales international won eight of his 11 duels throughout the game to constantly cut out opposition attacks and to win the midfield battle for his side.
This allowed Leeds to keep hold of possession when the game got scrappy, because Ampadu used his immense physicality to come out on top in the majority of his duels, and this created a platform for the attacking players to push on and thrive.
He also made three tackles and interceptions combined to stop the Welsh outfit from testing Illan Meslier between the sticks, as the Whites kept a clean sheet.

As you can see in the table above, Ampadu was also impressive in possession with a pass completion rate of 88% from his 106 touches of the ball.
This shows that the Welsh titan was composed and reliable on the ball for Leeds in the middle of the park, which prevented constant turnovers and meant that Cardiff did not have too many chances to get back into the game by regaining the ball through loose passes.
Therefore, Ampadu was the real hero for Farke on Saturday because he produced a fantastic all-round performance in the middle of the park, with his quality in and out of possession crucial to their dominance in the match.
Ethan Ampadu's season in numbers
The former Chelsea man, who arrived from the Premier League side in the summer of 2023, has enjoyed a terrific start to the 2024/25 campaign in the Championship.
Starting every single game of the season in the defensive midfield role, he has been pivotal to their return of four clean sheets in six league matches.
After six games, the 24-year-old star ranks within the top 2% of midfielders in the Championship for aerial battles won per 90 (2.09) and the top 20% for tackles won per 90 (2.96), which shows that he has been one of the standout defensive talents in his position this term.

As you can see in the table above, Ampadu has been reliable in possession and dominant off the ball, which was the case once again against Cardiff on Saturday.
His duel success rate of 70%, including battles on the ground and in the air, shows that opposition players find it incredibly difficult to get the better of him in the middle battle, which allows him to control that crucial area of the pitch for Leeds.
Farke will now be hoping that his captain, who has started every league game under him since the start of last season, can keep up this sublime form for the rest of the campaign to boost their promotion hopes.
Leeds struck gold with £2m star who'd be worth more than Rutter in 2024
