1 duel won, 10x ball lost: Howe must axe 5/10 Newcastle man after Brighton

Newcastle United’s winless streak has extended to four games, after a frustrating 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion. Despite plenty of pressure throughout the game, Eddie Howe’s side simply could not find the back of the net.

It was Brighton centre-forward Danny Welbeck who scored the only goal of the game. He brought down a good long pass on his chest, before laying the ball off to Georginio Rutter who played a first-time pass back to the former England international. Welbeck simply ran through the Magpies defenders and slotted home past Nick Pope to give his side the lead.

Howe will certainly be frustrated his side could not capitalise on the pressure they applied on the Seagulls goal. As per Sofascore, they had 60% of the ball and managed 21 shots, although just six found the target. The Magpies created an expected goals total of 1.95xG, superior to Brighton’s 1.16xG.

It was a disappointing result in the end for the North Eastern outfit, who have slipped to eighth in the Premier League. However, there were some good performances across the board despite the result.

Newcastle’s standout performers vs. Brighton

There were several 7/10 post match ratings given out to Newcastle stars by Lee Ryder, chief Newcastle writer for Chronicle Live. He seemed particularly impressed with all three midfielders, as well as Nick Pope, Dan Burn and Lewis Hall.

Young left-back Hall, who made his loan move from Chelsea permanent over the summer, is a player who possesses extreme technical quality. It is fair to say that was on show against the Seagulls.

In his 98 touches of the ball, the 20-year-old completed 91% of his passes including six out of seven long balls, and created three chances. Ryder explained he ‘was always a threat’ to Brighton.

Another standout player for Howe’s side today was enterprising midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian was called player of the match by Ryder, explaining he ‘put his heart and soul in it’ despite the result.

The Newcastle number 39 won a mammoth eight from 13 ground duels and all four of the tackles he attempted. On the ball, Guimaraes provided two key passes, created one big chance and competed 100% of his dribbles.

Bruno Guimaraes against Manchester City

Although several Magpies players stuck out on Saturday with their strong performances, there were a few players who struggled, including winger Jacob Murphy.

Murphy’s stats vs. Brighton

It was a tough day at the office for 29-year-old attacker Murphy. Starting his sixth Premier League game of the season, he struggled to get any kind of grip on the game and was ultimately substituted in the 65th minute for Harvey Barnes.

It was certainly a hard afternoon of work for the Newcastle number 23. Frustratingly for the Magpies, he did not offer much creatively and did not have much of an impact defensively, either, despite working incredibly hard.

Murphy’s disappointing day was also shown in his stats. He had 44 touches and had a pass accuracy of just 78%. The winger also won just one of his five attempted duels and lost the ball ten times.

The Englishman received a post-match rating of just 5/10 from Ryder. The journalist described him as a ‘willing runner’ although explained that he ‘lacked clinical edge’ going forward, as did the rest of his teammates.

Howe may well decide to drop his number 29 ahead of a tough visit to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea next weekend, with the attacking unit still suffering from the lack of a quality, first-choice winger on the right flank.

Lancashire appoint Mark Chilton as director of cricket performance

Long-serving club man steps up to management after departure of Paul Allott

As they attempted to recover from their side’s innings and 199-run mauling by Warwickshire in the Bob Willis Trophy, Lancashire supporters could at least take comfort from the news that Mark Chilton has been appointed the county’s new director of cricket performance.Chilton, who will be 45 on Saturday, is effectively taking over from Paul Allott, who is stepping down after four years in the role of director of cricket. The slight change in title reflects the fact that Chilton will take responsibility for all men and women’s élite and pathway cricket at Emirates Old Trafford rather than the more broad-ranging responsibilities of his predecessor.Chilton’s pedigree and commitment to Lancashire cannot be doubted. Although born in Sheffield, he was brought up in Sale and educated at the Manchester Grammar School and Durham University before making his first-class debut in 1997. He then played all but one of his 196 first-class games for Lancashire, captaining the county for three seasons from 2005 until 2007.In the latter role he nearly led his team to what would have been their first County Championship in 73 years but they fell 24 runs short of victory against Surrey on the last day of the season after an epic pursuit of 489 to win. On that occasion Chilton was consoled by his opposite number, Mark Butcher, but four years later he was to be found singing with the fans on the outfield at Taunton after the title had been won. The loyalty of Emirates Old Trafford’s new director of cricket to the Red Rose was pledged early and it runs very deep.Chilton retired at the end of the 2011 season after scoring 9556 runs in a 15-year career. He then spent a couple of years or so looking after the cricket at MGS before returning to Lancashire and has recently combined the roles of performance director and assistant coach to Glen Chapple, a relationship he does not see being altered very much by this appointment.”My relationship with Glen hasn’t really changed that much in 20 years,” he said. “I’ve captained him and he’s captained me and then I’ve been working under him for the last four years. There is a deep respect there and I think we’ve complemented each other’s abilities.Five years ago Chilton did a Master’s degree in Sporting Directorship, which was plainly a preparation for the time when he wanted to combine his practical coaching with a more managerial role. But neither his fidelity to Lancashire nor his qualifications prevented him undergoing a tough series of interviews before being appointed and facing the challenges that lie ahead in domestic cricket’s rapidly changing environment”I went through a rigorous interview process but that was a learner for me as well,” he said. “This is probably a job I’ve had my eye on for a while now with regards to progressing my career and I can’t wait to get started.”A lot of uncertainty exists at the higher level of county cricket once players begin to push for ECB contracts and also franchise cricket. My view and that of most people at the club is that it is necessary to have a continuous stream of talent coming through, almost an over-supply of cricketers, in order to sustain success over a period of time. We’ve always had a good pathway in place and we now have good foundations on which to build.”During recent seasons Chilton has often been found carrying a sidearm and a bag of balls to the nets, where he would give one of the younger batters on the staff the practice they need. Inevitably some of that hands-on role will cease in his new role but it is impossible not to think of Chilton doing some practical work with players like Josh Bohannon and Rob Jones, whose development he has done so much to encourage. In some seasons he has been seen with the second team as often as the first and there is little doubt that Lancashire have appointed a man whose knowledge of the players on the staff is as great as anyone at Old Trafford. Now, however, he will be expected to sign players, formulate overall strategy and deliver success. He will also, on occasions, have to tell young cricketers they are being released. One imagines he will find that as difficult as any of his other tasks.Or to borrow a phrase from : “Now comes the tricky bit”.The advantage for Chilton is that he knows Emirates Old Trafford inside out. So rather than being deterred by the challenges that lie ahead, he is ready for them and even excited to meet them head on.”To be a kid who was brought up in Sale, a couple of miles from Old Trafford and to be given this responsibility now is pretty mind-blowing in lots of ways,” he said. “But I’m very proud of my journey which has involved captaining the club and now involves the ultimate responsibility for driving Lancashire cricket forward. Everyone who knows me understands my passion for the club and I’m pretty humbled to have that task.”

Babar, Faheem inflict sixth straight loss on Southern Punjab

Mohammad Nawaz and Haris Rauf hold off Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take Northern to fourth

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Oct-2021

Babar Azam sends the ball into the stratosphere•Pakistan Cricket Board

Southern Punjab lost their sixth straight game in a row, with Central Punjab trouncing their provincial rivals by seven wickets to eliminate them from semi-final contention.SP found themselves under pressure instantly after being put in to bat with Faheem Ashraf removing both openers in the first over. Agha Salman and Azam Khan looked to have put them back on track with an 84-run stand, but once it broke, SP crumbled completely. Hasan Ali ripped through the order with four wickets as CP picked them off with ease, the last eight wickets falling for 34 runs to leave CP chasing a straightforward 120.The chase was as simple as they come, with Babar Azam assuming complete control from the outset. An unbeaten 59 formed the spine of the CP innings, with Kamran Akmal playing his part for the second-wicket partnership. CP had no need to ever really get out of second gear, finally putting SP out of their misery in the 18th over, both on the night and in the tournament.Mohammad Nawaz scored an unbeaten 56 off 35 balls•PCB

A whirlwind 90-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan helped Northern recover from the loss of four early wickets to beat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by 14 runs.Table-toppers KP put Northern in to bat first, and Shaheen Afridi put them under immediate pressure in a glorious first over in which he removed Ali Imran and Haider Ali. Northern rebuilt with a 50-run third-wicket stand, only to lose another couple in quick succession. But they stuck to their plans, with the in-form Nawaz and Shadab launching an impressive counter-attack, with the next 90 runs coming in nine overs as Nawaz smashed a 34-ball 51, his second half-century in three games. Shadab’s 27-ball 46 was the accompaniment, and thanks to a handy cameo from Asif Ali, Northern got to 181.KP’s response lacked the necessary intent required to chase down a steep total for much of the first ten overs, hampered by the loss of Mohammad Rizwan and Sahibzada Farhan early. With the asking rate rising, Iftikhar Ahmed brought his side back into the contest with a glorious half-century, but lack of support from the other end ensured KP were always a touch too far behind the game. And once Haris Rauf, who starred with three wickets, had Iftikhar hole out, all doubts vanished, with a clinical Northern closing out an impressive win.

Ex-Tottenham employee hints Levy could replace Richarlison with £33m star

A former Tottenham Hotspur employee has shared how Daniel Levy could sign an “exceptional” player in 2025, and it would be bad news for striker Richarlison.

Spurs targeting new striker despite Dominic Solanke signing

Over the summer window, Spurs completed a £65 million deal (including add-ons) for Dominic Solanke – a move which ended their year-long wait for Harry Kane’s replacement at N17.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 22, 2024

The Englishman has bagged three goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions so far, briefly picking up an ankle injury earlier this season before returning to the side, yet some reports have suggested that Spurs could move to bring in another number nine.

Tottenham are reportedly in pole position to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, and it is believed by some media sources that Spurs have showed the most interest in Viktor Gyokeres, amid his sensational career at Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

This is despite the presence of Richarlison, who’s endured a difficult start to the season. The Brazilian is yet to get off the mark under Ange Postecoglou this campaign, with an injury keeping him out of action from late August to mid-October.

The 27-year-old made his first appearance since August 24 with a brief nine-minute cameo during Spurs’ 4-1 derby win over West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend, and supporters will be hoping to see the very best of him again as soon as possible.

dream-richarlison-tottenham-list

Richarlison enjoyed a real purple patch midway through 2023/2024, scoring nine goals in eight Premier League games from October through to February, but his output has significantly diminished since then.

Richarlison attracted interest from Saudi Arabia in the summer window, but the former Everton star elected to remain in north London to fight for his place under Postecoglou. In an interview with ESPN, he even confirmed that there had been an offer from the Middle East.

“The money is high, but my dream is bigger,” said Richarlison.

“An offer has arrived, but my dream of playing for the Brazilian national team and the Premier League is louder. It’s decided.”

Ex-Tottenham employee suggests Levy could replace Richarlison with Delap

Speaking to Tottenham News, former Spurs scout Bryan King has suggested that Levy could replace Richarlison with Ipswich star Delap in January, otherwise, the Lilywhites may wait until next summer to strike a deal for the “exceptional” former Man City gem.

“Spurs might be interested, but I can’t see that happening till the summer,” King said.

“Unless Richarlison is to leave in January. I’m not a great believer in him. If Spurs have got something lined up in the January window, then they would certainly be looking for another forward.

“Therefore a young one who has scored goals in the Premier League would be a perfect option.”

Delap is rumoured to command a £33 million price tag, which is pretty reasonable for a Premier League striker who has started the season in such promising fashion. The Englishman would also count towards Tottenham’s homegrown quota, giving more incentive for Levy to consider moving amid rumours they’re favourites for his signature.

Moeen Ali hopes that Yorkshire crisis can lead to lasting change

England allrounder praises Azeem Rafiq for encouraging others to share experiences

Moeen Ali hopes that the short-term pain of the ongoing racism crisis at Yorkshire can have long-term benefits for the whole of English cricket, as he welcomed the chance for the sport to embrace true diversity and “open up those avenues for everybody”.Speaking from the UAE, where England are preparing to face New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, Moeen said that he had “never felt discriminated against” like Azeem Rafiq at Yorkshire, but said that his bravery in speaking out was likely to encourage others to come forward too.”I wouldn’t say I’m surprised but there’s probably more stories out there that people haven’t heard of,” Moeen said. “The fact it’s come out is great because, going forward, people [will] have to think about what they can or can’t say in terms of discriminating against people and knowing what people feel and go through.”Rafiq’s original testimony in 2020 included an admission that his treatment at Yorkshire had left him “on the brink of suicide”, and Moeen believes that his honesty will have helped to break a major taboo when it comes to addressing such issues within dressing rooms.”Azeem’s talked a lot about his mental health and I think that’s really, really important,” Moeen said. “I think the most important thing is that people who do suffer with mental health are really being looked after in this situation.”What Azeem has done, he is not doing it for any personal gain, I think he wants change and that’s what he’s pushing for.”It’s not banter at the end of the day,” he said of the use of the word “P**i”, the slur that Rafiq’s team-mate Gary Ballance last week admitted he had used to address him. “We’ve got to be really careful with the language that we use. The environment is really important, because when the environment is right, that sort of language doesn’t come out.”Moeen added that Rafiq’s experiences at Yorkshire had become part of an “open discussion” within the England dressing room, which he praised for its inclusive values – perhaps most memorably articulated after the 2019 World Cup victory, when Eoin Morgan, the captain, said that “Allah had been with us” in the tense final against New Zealand.Related

Morgan’s comment was a reference to the two Muslim players in England’s white-ball squad – Moeen and Adil Rashid, who also plays for Yorkshire – while the current squad also includes players of Caribbean and Southern African heritage, as well as Morgan himself, who played for his native Ireland until 2007.”It’s been talked about quite a lot actually,” Moeen said. “It’s about having an open discussion, and to be learning as well as a team, about what we can do to change those mindsets, and how comfortable we want people to be when they come into this environment, no matter where they’re from, what they do, or any background that they have.”Everybody has a story in our changing room about their own background and it helps with people coming from all different parts of the world as well,” he added. “Massive credit goes to the coaches and Eoin Morgan for really pushing it so that everybody’s just normal with each other. It just feels like home to be honest with you.”Nevertheless, during the summer, England’s Test team experienced a similar reckoning to the ongoing one at Yorkshire, when Ollie Robinson’s debut at Lord’s in June became overshadowed by a series of offensive tweets that he had posted in his early years as a professional. While Moeen admitted that the fall-out from that episode had been ugly, he felt that it too would prove to have been a positive experience in the long run.”I think a lot of players have learned from the Ollie Robinson situation and I think it’s made people more aware of things that they probably weren’t aware of before,” he said. “It doesn’t look great right now, but hopefully in the future, it will make a massive impact and that’s what we want.”Sometimes you need to have a bit of a dip to really come out. That’s from Yorkshire’s point of view as well as the whole cricket community and culture. There’s going to be big changes. I know one thing the ECB has always [done] since I’ve been playing is to try and really push those boundaries and open up those avenues for everybody, really.”We’re a multicultural country where diversity is rife and that’s what we want. We don’t want to have to go through what we’re going through right now again, in five years’ time, 10 years’ time.”

Leeds wasted £19.4m on Bielsa signing who earned way more than Piroe

Marcelo Bielsa is a man who will forever be adored by every Leeds United supporter after his period in charge as manager at Elland Road.

The Argentine transformed the club on the pitch, with his relentless pressing game allowing the fanbase to fall back in love with the side after years of discontent under various other managers.

However, Bielsa largely worked with the same squad that was at the club upon his arrival back in 2018, only making subtle changes, but implementing a style very few sides could live with.

Marcelo Bielsa

They may have narrowly missed out on promotion during his debut campaign at the helm, but his men would go one better the following season and secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League.

The 69-year-old was sacked in February 2022, with the Whites now featuring in the Championship once more – but current boss Daniel Farke will be hoping that he can secure promotion at the second attempt, as Bielsa did, potentially relying on one player to provide the goods in attacking areas.

Joel Piroe’s stats at Leeds United

After relegation back to England’s second tier for the start of the 2023/24 campaign, it was crucial that Farke recruited well to give himself the best chance of securing Leeds an immediate return to the Premier League.

As a result, he decided to fork out a fee in the region of £10m for Joel Piroe, hoping that he could replicate his goalscoring figures from his time at Swansea City, which saw him register 20-plus goals in both his full seasons in South Wales.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

The 25-year-old would notch an impressive tally of 14 goals in his first year at Elland Road, but ultimately wasn’t enough to secure promotion, as the Whites lost to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley.

Piroe had remained a key player in Farke’s side this time around, featuring in every match so far, scoring five times – making him the club’s leading goalscorer so far this campaign.

Despite his impressive goalscoring record for the club, the forward has often come under fire from the supporters, with many unhappy with his performances of late, including his display in the defeat against Millwall last night where they failed to find the net.

The 25-year-old may have cost a hefty sum, but his weekly wages are among the cheapest in the current squad.

They just so happen to be cheaper than one of their biggest flops of the Bielsa-era too.

Leeds wasted money on Victor Orta signing

During the summer of 2019, Bielsa wanted to improve his squad to aid his promotion push, signing winger Helder Costa on a season-long loan, before becoming permanent the following summer.

The winger joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, registering 43 league appearances during the promotion-winning campaign, registering a combined eight goal contributions in the process.

Leeds paid £16m for his signature after promotion to the top-flight, only making 22 league appearances that season – a year that would be his final one as a first-team member in Yorkshire.

Costa would subsequently spend various loan spells at Valencia and Al Ittihad, before having his contract terminated in October 2023 – in what was an all-round shocking deal for the club.

The 30-year-old earned £32k-per-week during his two full campaigns with the club, earning a total of £3.4m which, when combined with his huge transfer fee, saw the hierarchy spend £19.4m on the Angolan.

His subsequent wage is over two times higher than current first-team member Piroe, who only earns around £15k-per-week despite his big-money transfer last summer.

Costa only made 71 appearances for the Whites in all competitions, which saw him cost around £275k-per-game he played – undoubtedly going down as one of the club’s worst pieces of business in recent years.

Terminating his contract 12 months ago was the right call, preventing him from costing the club unnecessary wages and potentially burning a hole in the financial department.

He’s only just found himself a new club, failing to score in his first five appearances for Portuguese side Estoril – further highlighting that offloading the floor was the best thing to do given his high wages and lack of tangible impact.
