Newcastle now want to agree January exit for "first class" £120k-p/w ace

Newcastle United are now ready to cash in on one of their key men in January as they look to rejuvenate their squad under Eddie Howe, it has been claimed.

Newcastle set for busy January

Following a frustrating summer transfer window, Newcastle United will have money to spend in the January transfer window, and will be looking to do so in a bid to fire themselves back up the Premier League. Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Newcastle United, manager Eddie Howe suggested that his squad feels “stale” and could do with a refresh, something that they couldn’t manage to do in the last transfer window.

“I think freshness is important in a squad – I won’t sit here and deny that,” he said. “There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep the group dynamic new.

“A new dynamic and a new team always has to form every season. Sometimes, the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product. So I think we’re aware of that. But it’s about what we’re able to do rather than ‘I want’. ‘I want’ is clear. We haven’t had a huge turnover of players and that’s a slight concern.”

It would be a massive signing that could help Howe’s side get back on track.

Newcastle also have one of the oldest squads in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe’s side the third most experienced in the division and the likes of Fabian Schar, Nick Pope and Dan Burn all well into their 30s.

There will have to be an overhaul on Tyneside in the transfer windows ahead as a result, and now they have made a decision on one of their stars.

Newcastle ready to cash in on defender

That comes as Football Insider report that Newcastle United are once again ready to cash in on fullback Kieran Trippier in January in a bid to lighten their wage bill. The 34-year-old has hardly featured this season thanks to injury, while Tino Livramento appears to have moved ahead of him in the pecking order in the process, though Howe offered no suggestion that Trippier was out in the cold.

“He’s improving physically. He hasn’t played consistently now for quite a long time, so getting him back in that rhythm where he can feel 100 per cent fit will take a little bit of time. But he’s certainly closer than he was, and touch wood, he’s solved the hamstring problem that he had,” the Newcastle boss explained in his pre-match press conference before the clash with Liverpool.

Kieran Trippier

Historically, Howe has been full of praise for his former captain, saying over the summer: “Tripps is a really valuable member of the squad. His professionalism has been first-class. Since coming here he’s played a huge role in changing the narrative around the team. He galvanised the squad from the first day.”

However, with his contract up in 2026 and Trippier among the highest earners at the club, it is reported that the Magpies “will look to cash in” on the 34-year-old in the winter window “in a last-ditch attempt to raise funds”.

It is added that “the club are planning to reinvest the money raised from his sale into the squad”, with the defender having been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer, and more recently with AC Milan, though a move to San Siro seems unlikely given they are already well-stocked at right back.

With Livramento now first choice, Trippier’s exit may well be the best solution for all parties, and could allow the Magpies to bolster their first team in January with a centre-back and right winger still among their top targets.

IPL unveils new format for 2022, with two groups and seedings

Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings will be on top in Group B

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Feb-2022

Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, the two most successful teams across IPLs, are the top two seeds•BCCI

The 2022 IPL will give its 10 teams seedings and place them in two “virtual” groups during the league phase of the tournament. The seedings are based on the number of times a team has won the IPL or made the finals. Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who are the top overall seeds, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings, will lead Group B with the No. 2 seeding. The other teams in Group A, in order, are Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Group B features Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, in that order.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Unveiling the new format on Friday, the IPL said in a release that the 10 teams will play a total of 14 matches – seven home and seven away – during the league phase of a season that now stretches to 70 games. Ten of the 14 matches will be home-and-away games against the other four teams in the group, as well as two matches against the team from the corresponding row (organised by the seedings) of the other group. Mumbai, as an example, will play the other four teams in Group A – Knight Riders, Royals, Capitals and Super Giants – and Super Kings from Group B two times each. They will play the remaining teams in the other group once each (for a total of 14 games) – these games will be split home and away. The home-and-away formula will not be relevant this season, though, because the IPL has decided to restrict the league phase to four venues across two cities: Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai will host the bulk of the matches (55), the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium on the outskirts of Pune will host 15 matches during the league phase.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Every team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy, and three times each at Brabourne Stadium and the MCA Stadium. While the IPL will finalise and announce the schedule in early March, it remains to be seen whether Mumbai will get any matches at their home base at the Wankhede.2011 format tweaked
The format is similar to the one used in 2011, when 10 teams featured for the first time. The teams were split into two loose groups, with 70 league matches and four playoff games, and all the teams ranked in one points table. During the league phase, every team played 14 matches. Each team played the other four in their group both home and away (eight matches), four of the teams in the other group once each (four matches, either home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the composition of the groups as well as who played whom across the groups once or twice. For 2022, the IPL confirmed that the tournament will be played between March 26 and May 29. It will begin 10 days after India’s home Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to end. That means the IPL will not follow the RM Lodha Committee recommendation, which had stated that a two-week gap was mandatory between any international series/tournament India played and the IPL.

Liverpool now scouting "special" MLS talent with 36 G/A in 2024

Liverpool are now among the sides keeping a close eye on a new breakout star as they look to bolster Arne Slot’s squad, it has been reported.

Liverpool's Salah contract standoff

Mohamed Salah has been a mainstay in the Liverpool side since he arrived from Roma, and is arguably in some of the best form of his Reds career under Slot. The Egyptian has taken the Premier League by storm once more this season, having managed 11 goals and seven assists in his 13 outings so far to help Liverpool move nine points clear at the top of the table.

Already a Liverpool icon, his 223 goals in Red make him one of the club’s five most prolific goalscorers of all time and despite being 32-years-old he is showing no signs of slowing down. But as it stands, he will be leaving the club for free at the end of the season, with the club yet to offer him a new contract and his current deal expiring in the summer.

Speaking after his side’s 3-2 win over Southampton, he admitted he was “more out than in” as things stand.

“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I’m probably more out than in,” Salah told reporters. “You know now I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”

Even if a contract is agreed, Salah cannot remain Liverpool’s first choice winger for ever, and his will be big shoes to fill when he does eventually depart Anfield. Now, Liverpool are eyeing a player who could potentially go some way to filling them.

Liverpool monitoring "special" talent

That comes as Caught Offside report that the Reds are now keeping a close eye on MLS superstar Gabriel Pec. The 23-year-old only arrived in the US in January but has taken the division by storm, grabbing 16 goals and 14 assists in MLS as well as a further six goals and assists in just four playoff outings.

His form saw him awarded the newcomer of the year trophy, where he finished ahead of former Liverpool great Luis Suarez in the voting, as well as providing more goals and assists than the veteran Uruguayan forward.

He has been dubbed a “special” talent by MLS fan account MLS moves on X and now, his form has made clubs sit up and take notice.

That is according to Caught Offside, who claim that Liverpool are “among a number of Premier League clubs who’ve had scouts keeping an eye on Pec”. Pec, who has spent much of the season on the right side of attack, is a left footed forward who likes to cut inside onto his stronger foot, not unlike the likes of Salah and Bukayo Saka.

It is added that the 23-year-old is being “eyed up as a future target” for the Reds, which could see him part of the solution to fill the right flank in a post-Salah Liverpool setup.

Eight IPL-bound players included in South Africa squad for Bangladesh ODIs

South Africa have named a full-strength squad, minus Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala for fitness reasons, for the upcoming home ODI series against Bangladesh. The three-match series, which is to be played in Centurion and Johannesburg from March 18 to 23, concludes just three days before the start of the IPL, which could mean the South African players chosen for the ODIs could miss some of their franchises’ early matches.South Africa’s squad includes eight players who are expected to take part in the IPL – Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Dwaine Pretorius and Marco Jansen.Related

Mandatory three-day quarantine for teams before entering IPL bubble

South Africa players face 'litmus test of loyalty' ahead of IPL 2022

A three-day quarantine is mandatory for all teams before they enter the IPL bubble, but this rule will be relaxed if players are arriving from another bubble. The South Africa-Bangladesh series is set to be played within a “managed environment”, which is more relaxed than a bio-bubble and which CSA used for its recent domestic T20 competition. This means players will be permitted to go to outdoor spaces including beaches, parks and open-air restaurants, and those South African players based in the Highveld, including Rabada, Ngidi and van der Dussen, may be permitted to stay at home, and not in the team hotel. How this affects their quarantine requirements in the IPL is as yet unclear. There is set to be a bigger clash between national commitments and the IPL, however, when South Africa play their Test series against Bangladesh, which is set to run from March 31 to April 12. CSA earlier confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the choice between the Test series and the IPL would be left to the players; Test captain Dean Elgar suggested the choice would show “where players’ loyalty lies”.”The players in the one-day squad who are not playing in the Tests will likely leave for IPL after the ODI series,” Victor Mpitsang, CSA’s selection convenor, told ESPNcricinfo. “We will have more clarity on the six players who are part of the Test group in the next couple of days.”It would seem that these six players are Rabada, Ngidi, van der Dussen, Markram, Jansen and Nortje, who is a part of South Africa’s Test plans but has missed their last two series against India and New Zealand because of a hip injury. He hasn’t played competitively since the T20 World Cup in November. It isn’t clear if he will recover in time to take part in the IPL, though it appears unlikely.”It’s probably going to be difficult [for Nortje to go to the IPL],” Mpitsang said. “He has not really been bowling much since November. We don’t have any timeframe on his return. It’s been a long one. The medical team will give advice on whether he will be cleared for the IPL.”Anrich Nortje hasn’t played competitively since the T20 World Cup•ICC via Getty

According to Dr Shuaib Manjra, CSA’s chief medical officer, Nortje’s recovery path has been “frustrating”. “He is currently being investigated,” Manjra told ESPNcricinfo. “He has been seen by three different orthopaedic surgeons. He is struggling with loading and doing most of the other rehab work. He hasn’t bowled for over three months.”He is not ready for the Bangladesh series. We don’t know about the IPL. I guess it’s frustrating. He keeps fit, he works extremely hard. All goes fine, except for when he picks up his bowling loads. He has got discomfort. We have identified three different problems between back and hip and we don’t know which is primary.”Ngidi is also returning from injury, having missed both the Tests in New Zealand with a back issue. “We expect Lungi to be fit,” Manjra said.Magala, meanwhile, has failed a fitness test. The ODIs are part of the World Cup Super League where South Africa remain outside the automatic qualification zone in tenth position after dropping points in Ireland and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh, on the other hand, are on top of the table with 100 points from ten matches. They have never beaten South Africa in an ODI series in South Africa but won a series against them in Bangladesh in 2015. Bangladesh also have a significant South African backroom staff to strategise with. Russell Domingo, the former South Africa coach, is at the helm while Allan Donald, South Africa’s former bowling coach, joined Bangladesh ahead of this series.South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (capt), Keshav Maharaj (vice-capt), Quinton de Kock (wk), Zubayr Hamza, Marco Jansen, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne

He’s like Palmer: Spurs could sign dream Son replacement for just £25m

Thanks to their sensational Premier League victory over Southampton on Sunday evening, the feeling around Tottenham Hotspur is a little more positive than it was a week ago.

It was practically the complete performance from Ange Postecoglou’s side; five goals were scored, none conceded, and they were able to coast through the second half without exerting too much effort.

The likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr all looked back to their brilliant best, and club captain Son Heung-min rolled back the years.

However, while he was excellent, the club need to start looking for his replacement, and the good news is, they might have already found him in a player compared to Cole Palmer, of all people.

Why Spurs need a Son replacement

So, the first thing to say is that, over the last nine years or so, few players have had even close to Son’s impact on English football.

The South Korean superstar is undoubtedly a Tottenham great, and you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who’d deny him being a Premier League great as well.

For example, in just 316 appearances in the competition, the Chuncheon-born dynamo has scored 125 goals and provided 68 assists, equating to a fantastic average of a goal involvement every 1.63 games.

However, as spectacular as the former Bayer Leverkusen ace has been for the Lilywhites, time comes for us all, and at 32 years old, his ability to impact games from out wide is beginning to wane.

That isn’t a slight on him either, as research carried out by The Athletic found that the age at which wide players peak is 26, so there can be no doubt that while he’s still capable of a brilliant performance here and there, he cannot be relied upon to perform week-in-week-out.

Moreover, this season has seen him fade out of games more than ever, making it clear that he cannot be a long-term option as Postecoglou looks to build a title-winning team over the next few years.

The good news is that reports have linked the club with someone who’d be an ideal replacement for Son, someone who’s been compared to Palmer.

The dream Son replacement

To get straight to the point, the player in question is Lyon star Rayan Cherki, who, according to a report late last week from GIVEMESPORT, is one of several players being looked at by the club.

Lyon star Rayan Cherki

There is no mention of a price in the story, but other reports from this month have claimed that he could be available for as little as £25m due to the French side’s financial issues.

With that said, before we look at his numbers from this season, let’s examine this comparison to Chelsea’s Palmer and where it comes from.

It primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Frenchman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive carries, shots on target, goal-creating actions and passing accuracy, all per 90.

However, it’s not just the comparison to the Blues’ new superstar that makes the 21-year-old such an exciting candidate to replace Son; he’s also putting up impressive numbers this season.

For example, in 17 appearances, the incredible youngster, who respected analyst Ben Mattinson described as having “Ballon d’Or potential,” has scored five goals and provided seven assists, equating to a goal involvement every 1.41 games.

Ultimately, Spurs will need to sign someone genuinely spectacular to replace the output Son has provided them over the years, and while it would represent something of a gamble, Cherki looks like he has the potential to become that player.
