Nawaz expects his presence in Sri Lanka camp to spur on former Bangladesh Under-19 trainees

Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shoriful Islam will get a chance to meet and interact with Naveed Nawaz, their one-time mentor who is now in the opposition camp, as the assistant coach of the Sri Lanka team that is in Bangladesh for a two-Test series. The reunion will take place in Chattogram on May 12 before the first Test starts on May 15.Former Sri Lanka international Nawaz, who was the head coach of the Bangladesh team that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, was recently appointed assistant to new Sri Lanka men’s head coach Chris Silverwood, and is looking forward to meeting his “boys”.Related

“They [Mahmudul and Shoriful] are skilled enough to handle any situation. Me being there [in the opposition dressing room] shouldn’t mean anything to them because they have played and succeeded in international cricket,” Nawaz said at a press interaction today. “I think that [his presence] would be a positive more than a negative for them.”In the future, they will go to many countries to adapt and adjust to play at the highest level. I think those boys are really good players. One day, they will be legends of Bangladesh cricket. They are so good. I haven’t seen them for a long time so they will of course be happy to see me around.”Nawaz had been a regular presence at the Shere Bangla National Stadium after he was appointed U-19 head coach in July 2018. He oversaw two World Cup campaigns, in 2020 and 2022, so seeing him in opposition colours at Sri Lanka’s training session at the stadium on Sunday evoked mixed feelings for those present.”It is good to be back in my country,” Nawaz, who was in the running to replace Mickey Arthur as Sri Lanka’s head coach in late 2021, said. “I enjoyed four years [with the U-19 team]. It was really good. I think I was able to give something to Bangladesh, to do justice to the four years.”Speaking about the series, Nawaz said he expected tough contests, primarily between the two batting units. “It is going to be a tough series. It will be a test of the two batting groups,” he said. “We have a bit of inexperience in our bowling group. The batting is far superior, for both units. They are pretty similar too. Bangladesh has a bit of youth in their bowling group. The two teams are evenly poised; it will be a good series to watch.”The Sri Lankan players are familiar with Bangladesh conditions, and among the current Test squad members, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kushal Mendis played in the Dhaka Premier League that ended in April.”We will always rely on past experiences as a visitor to this country,” Nawaz said. “We have a couple of players who are well-tuned to Bangladesh, who played in the Dhaka Premier League, BPL and various types of cricket here. There are some who played the last Test series here as well.”We are very optimistic and open-minded about whatever that comes through. We will try to adapt as much as possible to conditions and pitches in Chittagong [Chattogram]. It has always produced a lot of runs, so we expect something similar.”The political situation in Sri Lanka has been quite turbulent in recent times, and though Nawaz said that the team’s preparations had not been affected, a positive result in Bangladesh would certainly be welcome news for fans back home.”So far I don’t think it has affected us,” he said. “Most of the cricketers are continuing to do their hard work. Their training has been ongoing for a couple of months. I didn’t see an instance which affected the players.”You can’t see many positives [in Sri Lanka] at the moment. It will be very good for us to take some positives back home. We want to keep inspiring the young generation of the country.”

Spurs target unreal Dragusin upgrade in "incredible" £29m superstar

There’s no escaping it now: this season has been dreadful for Tottenham Hotspur.

In fact, the one thing preventing it from being a full-blown disaster is the fact that the club have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to.

However, when it comes to their Premier League form, Ange Posetcoglou’s side have been dire, and while some blame must fall at the feet of the manager, he has been dealt a lousy hand in the form of an injury crisis at the back.

So, recent reports linking the club with someone who could solve the manager’s biggest problem and serve as an upgrade on Radu Dragusin should excite fans.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of around 11 sides interested in Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Skriniar.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report claims that Napoli, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma, and Atlético Madrid are all keen on the experienced defender.

However, while this level of outside interest is far from ideal for the North Londoners, the good news is that he may not cost an arm and a leg to sign, as the story has revealed that PSG will make him available for around €35m – £29m – next month, and could be willing to go as low as €25m – £21m – in negotiations.

In all, it could be an incredibly complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Skriniar’s ability and experience, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’d be an upgrade on Dragusin and help solve Ange’s biggest problem.

How Skriniar compares to Dragusin

So, of all the issues Postecoglou has faced at Spurs this season, the defensive injury crisis has been the most significant.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies have all missed a sizable portion of the season thus far, which has meant that 18-year-old Archie Gray and the error-prone Dragusin have had to form a makeshift and rather flimsy centre-back partnership, and now it looks like the latter will be out for a little while as well.

So, in signing a new defender, the club will be addressing, and hopefully solving, the Australian’s most significant pressing this season.

Moreover, if the centre-back they sign ends up being Skriniar, then that would also see Dragusin fall further down the pecking order, as while he’s had some decent performances, he’s also had too many dire ones.

For example, he picked up a red card on his European debut for the side, gifted Victor Osimhen a goal against Galatasaray and looked utterly clueless against Rangers.

However, the “incredible” PSG gem, as dubbed by journalist Jerry Mancini, would be a brilliant addition to the squad in his own right and not just as an upgrade on the Romanian.

For example, he has bags and bags of experience, making 246 appearances for Inter Milan and winning the league in Italy and France while also making 77 appearances for Slovakia.

Moreover, on top of being a 6 foot 2 titan who certainly wouldn’t be bullied in the Premier League, he’s no slouch with the ball at his feet, as FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, places him in the top 1% of centre-backs for passes attempted and passes completed, per 90.

Ultimately, Spurs are in desperate need of new defenders, as not only are their starting centre-backs seemingly injury-prone, but their replacements aren’t good enough.

Therefore, the North Londoners should do all they can to sign Skriniar next month, as he’d be the perfect solution to this problem.

Arsenal chasing dream Martinelli & Trossard upgrade all for just £46m

It would be fair to say that this season has not exactly gone according to plan for Arsenal.

The Gunners came into the campaign hopeful of finally displacing Manchester City atop the Premier League, and while they’re five points clear of the defending champions, they’re also down in third and nine points off Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side have still been relatively solid at the back this year but underwhelming in attack, especially off the left-hand side.

So, recent reports linking the club to an unreal left-winger who’d be an upgrade on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli should come as no surprise.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

The Gunners’ desire to bring the young Spaniard to the Emirates over the summer was widely reported, and according to this story, the club consider him to be a target for next summer as well.

The article does not mention a potential price tag, but reports from earlier this month reaffirmed that the European Champion has a release clause in his current contract worth around £46m.

There will undoubtedly be other teams chasing Williams in the summer, but should Arsenal want to take another step forward and improve their left-hand side ahead of next season, then signing the Spaniard would be an excellent idea.

How Williams compares to Martinelli and Trossard

So, should Arsenal be able to beat the chasing pack and bring Williams to North London in the summer, he’d almost certainly come in as the new first-choice left-winger ahead of Martinelli and Trossard, but how does he compare to the Gunners’ current options?

Well, from a simple output perspective, from the start of last season, he has them beat, and it’s not particularly close.

For example, the Spanish “level-raiser,” as analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, has scored ten goals and provided 24 assists in just 60 appearances, which equates to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every 1.76 games.

In contrast, the Belgian international has racked up a haul of 26 goal involvements in 71 appearances, and the Gunners’ Brazilian winger has a haul of just 20 in 68 appearances across the same period, meaning the pair are averaging a goal involvement every 2.73 and 3.4 games, respectively.

However, it’s not just his output that makes the 22-year-old such an exciting prospect, as his underlying numbers are just as impressive.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the Pamplona-born dynamo sits in the top 7% of wingers for progressive carries and successful take-ons, the top 10% for progressive passes received and the top 21% for assists, all per 90.

In particular, the fact that he’s so adept at progressing the ball up the pitch and taking on opposing defenders should excite Arsenal fans, as that is the sort of left-winger they have been crying out for.

Ultimately, while Trossard and Martinelli are talented footballers who have been vital to Arsenal’s resurgence over the last couple of years, they aren’t on the same level as Williams, nor do they have the same potential.

Therefore, while it could be incredibly challenging, the club must do what they can to bring him to the Emirates in the summer.

Alex Lees feels the need for big runs

But new England opener is looking beyond pressure to convert after a series of starts

His latest knock may have been lauded by captain Ben Stokes as his best in an England shirt but, just eight innings into his Test career, England opener Alex Lees is experienced enough to know he needs to turn a series of starts into a substantial contribution.Speaking ahead of the second Test against New Zealand starting at Trent Bridge on Friday, 29-year-old left-hander Lees reflected on his score of 20 – including four fours – in the fourth innings of the series opener at Lord’s, which England won by five wickets.”Last week was probably the most fluent innings I’ve had to date,” Lees said. “I was pleased in the manner I played but the obvious thing is that I have to take that and turn it into a substantial innings.”To be praised for a 20 is probably bittersweet. If you can get a good 20, you know you can probably make 60, 70, 80. I keep getting in and out, which is frustrating.”When you open the batting you face the best bowlers, sometimes at the worst times. To get through a spell or get through a tough day of cricket is something that I’ve always quite enjoyed… it’s that old Yorkshire stubbornness.”There’s always going to be speculation about the top order in England… I just never really wanted to shy away from the challenge of it.”Related

Jamieson: 'We're not going to panic after just one game'

Since making his debut against West Indies in the Caribbean in March after being called up in the aftermath of England’s dismal Ashes defeat, Lees has made 171 Test runs at a strike rate of 30.05 with a highest score of 31.He was bowled shouldering arms to a Kyle Jamieson nip-backer which gave New Zealand their initial breakthrough defending a lead of 276 before Joe Root’s unbeaten 115 led England to victory early on Sunday.”It’s not putting pressure on myself to make a double-hundred this game, but I’m aware I’d love to make a good score,” Lees said. “It’s trusting how I play and I played nicely in that second innings, so if I can take that forward and play in that manner over a period of time, the law of averages suggest I should get that contribution. That’s what I’m striving towards.”The obvious thing is if you’ve been selected as a batter, I think you always need to show some worth otherwise you know, you’re not going to get re-selected. I think the bigger picture for me is that I want to keep playing in a way in which I like to play, which is a way in which Brendon [McCullum, the England Test head coach] and Ben want us to play as a team and buy into that team ethos and identity.”And if I believe that, if we do that, and if I do that, I think there’s no reason over the period of the next couple of games why I can’t get a score.”Stokes bowled sparingly during England’s training session in Nottingham on Wednesday after appearing to be in some discomfort with his side, although the problem did not curb his batting in the nets.Spinner Jack Leach, meanwhile, bowled in the middle for the first time since he was concussed while fielding on the first day of the opening Test, forming part of a phased return to action that means he remains in doubt for the second match. Matt Parkinson, who was Leach’s concussion substitute at Lord’s, has held his place in the squad, with Craig Overton offering another pace option.

McDonald backs Head amid subcontinent selection debate

The head coach said Australia would continue to assess how they balance their side in Asia

AAP12-Jul-2022

Head coachAndrew McDonald insists Travis Head’s game has improved in Asia as Australia look to adopt a horses-for-courses approach on future tours of the subcontinent.Australia’s capitulation to an innings loss in Galle on Monday marked a poor end to two tours on the road, where they won 1-0 in Pakistan and drew 1-1 in Sri Lanka.McDonald is adamant the Galle reality check should not overshadow the fact they have taken significant steps forward on the sub-continent. But there is little doubt questions still remain ahead of next year’s tour of India.Australia were unable to make use of a platform of 329 for 5 in the first innings of the second Test, then spent 181 overs in the field and collapsed inside 41 in their second innings.Related

Cummins: Innings defeat a 'good reality check'

Do you believe in magic? Maybe it's the only thing that makes sense

Progress made, but subcontinent cracks still present for Australia

Several of those lessons will now be parked to one side and be brought out again ahead of next February’s four-Test tour of India. Australia have home series against the West Indies and South Africa, but form from Pakistan and Sri Lanka will weigh heavier when it comes to selection for India.”For a home summer it would be pretty difficult to join the dots from that surface out there [in Asia] to what we will see in Australia,” McDonald said. “[It] goes without saying [we pick a different team for the different conditions]. We picked two spinners here but we don’t pick two spinners in Australia.”It’s about the balance of your side. How many left-handers, how many right-handers. There are always things that are factored in. We have got to go away and make sure that we are asking ourselves the right questions as a selection panel and a coaching group.”McDonald’s input followed captain Pat Cummins suggestion players had to be given a chance to show what they can do in Asia.Head looms as the man under the most pressure. Across five Tests in Asia, Usman Khawaja enhanced his reputation as an improved man. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne both scored centuries in Galle and Cameron Green impressed throughout.Alex Carey had a poor second Test in Sri Lanka with the gloves, but still averaged 53.60 across the two tours. Mitchell Swepson also showed improvement with the ball in the second Test, while Nathan Lyon took two five-wicket hauls across the tours.David Warner meanwhile averaged below 30 as his century drought continued, but McDonald is adamant there is still many runs left in the opener. Head’s position is of most concern though, after Glenn Maxwell went close to selection in both Tests in Galle and Cummins made clear he was in the conversation for India. After being player of the series in the home Ashes summer, Head scored just 91 runs at an average of 15.16 against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.”He’s here for the first time,” McDonald said. “He’s been exposed to conditions that are very foreign. We saw him add the sweep shot in during [the final] innings.”He’s been working incredibly hard on his game. Sometimes, you make one small error and you are not there to actually see if your method works or not.”There’s definitely been a shift in his game in terms of how he wants to play in these conditions. So we are optimistic that across the journey, if given more time, that that can no doubt work.”
