'Best way to stop the run rate is by taking wickets' – Will Young pleased with bowlers

Matt Henry, Henry Shipley and Daryl Mitchell took three wickets each, as hosts restricted Sri Lanka to 157

Three wickets in the first ten overs is great, but five in the first 20 is usually a match-defining passage of play. New Zealand dismissed three of Sri Lanka’s top four inside the powerplay in the third ODI in Hamilton, and then got two of their middle-order batters before the 18th over was completed too, leaving the opposition at 70 for 5 – a predicament from which the visitors would never seriously recover. Will Young, New Zealand’s best batter on the evening with a contribution of an unbeaten 86 in a successful chase of 158, felt that was the case too.”In one-day cricket, there’s an old adage that if you take three wickets in the first ten, you’re doing pretty well, and they took four or five in the first spell or two,” Young said of the New Zealand seamers. “They were incredible. The way they hit their lengths, [and] got the ball to talk in the air and off the wicket was really impressive.”Related

Tom Latham returns to lead NZ in T20Is against Sri Lanka, Pakistan

New Zealand’s quicks moved the ball beautifully in their opening spells, with each of the first three wickets coming off edges behind the stumps. Then, Daryl Mitchell got two middle-order wickets by getting the ball to bounce more than the batters had expected, and finished with one more wicket. But Matt Henry was the standout quick, taking 3 for 14 from his ten overs, even as Henry Shipley got three wickets too, to go with the five he had got in the first ODI in Auckland.”For Shippo to do that in one of his first series is testament to the form he’s in,” Young said. “For Matt Henry, it seems like an extension of his red-ball form at the moment. He’s hitting the same areas, and it’s awesome to see.”Although Sri Lanka had won the toss and chosen to bat first, New Zealand captain Tom Latham had said at the toss that he would have bowled first anyway. New Zealand had had a solid slip cordon in the early overs, and then used the short ball effectively, as their tall bowlers consistently extracted more bounce from the surface than Sri Lanka’s batters could contend with.”The best way to stop the run rate in one-day cricket is by taking wickets,” Young said. “I think Tom Latham did a great job in summarising the conditions early, [by] getting fielders in the right positions, and trusting that the ball will go to those attacking fielders – those slips, those gullies. They used the short ball as well. The bowlers and Tommy were singing from the same sheet.”However, New Zealand had had to see out a tough new-ball spell of their own, with Young, batting at No. 3, having to come in to bat in the second over, and then seeing his team sink to 21 for 3, which soon became 59 for 4. But he then forged an undefeated 100-run stand for the fifth wicket with Henry Nicholls, and New Zealand sauntered to the target in the 33rd over.”It was a bit more nerve-racking a bit later, when we were three or four down,” Young said. “But one of the great things about this team is that we bat deep, so I had full confidence in the boys, that we’d get the job done. And it happened to be Henry that I established a bit of a partnership with.”It can be quite a tricky time to bat, in that twilight period. We saw that if you hit the strings – and hit a good length – it’s going to be challenging at times. We found exactly that when the Sri Lankans got the ball in the right area: there was a bit of swing early, the ball certainly nipped around and there was a little bit of bounce too. Conditions were tough at times, but we managed to absorb that to get the job done.”

Peshawar Zalmi go from 2 for 3 to 197 for 5 and beat Karachi Kings

Haseebullah, Powell and Kohler-Cadmore half-centuries instrumental to turnaround

Haseebullah Khan, aged 19, hit a 29-ball fifty on PSL debut•PCB

Peshawar Zalmi went from one extreme to the other, slumping to 2 for 3 in the first 2.2 overs and then smashing 195 for 2 in the remaining 17.4 to seal a comfortable victory over Karachi Kings in Rawalpindi. It all began what seems like a very long time ago with Mohammad Amir sprinkling some of his magic dust, removing Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris in the very first over.Nineteen-year old Haseebullah Khan, on PSL debut, walked into an innings crying out for help and proceeded to soothe it. A member of Pakistan’s most recent Under-19 World Cup squad, he announced himself with a 29-ball fifty, in which five of his first 11 scoring shots were boundaries. Some of this carnage could have been mitigated had Akif Javed been able to hold onto a simple catch in the sixth over when Haseebullah only had 12 to his name but c’est la vie.Karachi’s dream start turned into a full on nightmare when Rovman Powell joined in on the fun, scoring 64 off just 34 balls. He hit six fours and four sixes during his stay; basically, he was able to hit a boundary once every three or four balls. Sixty-five runs – 33% of the total – came off the last four overs bowled by Javed (14+21), Amir (12) and Aamer Yamin (18). Somewhere in the middle of all that, Tom Kohler-Cadmore helped himself to a half-century as well.Karachi did begin their chase well with Matthew Wade moving to 37 off 26 by the end of the Powerplay. He’d benefited from two lives even at that early stage of the innings – once when he was on 1 (caught behind but not reviewed) and later when he was on 19 (dropped). Karachi would’ve hoped that those were signs of their luck changing but it was not to be. They went from 40 for 0 to 95 for 5 as Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Azmatullah Omarzai seized control through the middle overs picking up a combined 5 for 56 from their full quota.Imad Wasim (57 not out off 30 balls) threatened something special but even after hitting five fours in an over his side went into the last one needing 37 runs and that typically isn’t possible in a cricket match.

Peter Siddle signs for Durham as Scott Boland succumbs to heel injury

Australia Test quick ruled out of Durham stint with plantar fasciitis as Siddle jets in to fill his shoes

Durham will be Peter Siddle’s fifth different county•Getty Images

Durham have signed Peter Siddle for their next six County Championship matches after fellow Australian seamer Scott Boland was ruled out of his stint at the club with plantar fasciitis.Boland had originally signed until the end of July, on a multi-format deal that would have seen him feature in Durham’s T20 Blast campaign. However the foot injury caused him to arrive too late for their opening Division One fixture against Hampshire, where all four days were rained off, and it was exacerbated after 13 wicketless overs against Warwickshire.Boland subsequently missed the latest round against Worcestershire, which Durham won within three days. Scans showed the 35-year-old will now require what the county describes as “significant recovery and rehabilitation”.Having not played a Test match since the last of his 10 caps during last summer’s Ashes, Cricket Australia had encouraged Boland to play as much cricket as possible in this English season to build up his fitness ahead of their next Test series against India, which begins on November 22. Given Boland is not in their T20 World Cup plans, there is plenty of time for him to overcome this latest setback. As a centrally contracted player, CA will now oversee his recovery.Marcus North, Durham’s director of cricket, has acted quickly in securing Siddle as a replacement. The 39-year-old is no stranger to county cricket, following stints with Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, Essex and, most recently, Somerset. Across all four clubs he boasts 189 wickets at an average of 22.98 – including 16 at 24.12 at Taunton last season.”It was important we acted quickly to replace Scott Boland and we have done that with the addition of Peter Siddle for the County Championship,” North said in a statement released on Monday.”It is very disappointing to lose Scott after just one game and we wish him all the best in his recovery. We look forward to welcoming Pete to Durham and watching him play a key part in our success on the field in the coming weeks.”

Scouts sent: Man Utd plotting to sign "superb" £38m Martinez replacement

INEOS and Manchester United have now reportedly sent scouts to watch one defensive target as they begin to plot a summer swoop to secure his signature and ease their Lisandro Martinez injury woes.

Man Utd still targeting defensive additions

After Anthony Elanga ran the length of the pitch before firing home for Nottingham Forest in midweek, it should come as no surprise that Manchester United are still seeking defensive reinforcements. Now in April, the Red Devils are yet to win back-to-back games in the Premier League and their defensive issues in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system have played a large part in what has been a disastrous campaign.

Leicester City 0-3 Man Utd

09/03/2025

Man Utd 3-2 Ipswich Town

26/02/2025

Everton 2-2 Man Utd

22/02/2025

It should not go without saying, however, that defeat at the City Ground was United’s first in five league games and Amorim echoed that positivity in his post-match press conference, telling reporters: “It’s more [of] the same since this season began. So I think if you look at the game we are improving the way we play football. We are creating more chances, we are dominating more games.

“But in the end, when you don’t win, you feel that and that is a good thing. So we know that this season is going to be like that, the momentum. So we continue to go to the next [game].”

The former Sporting Club boss may well look at his side’s recent run as something to build on before welcoming some key additions. Among those already linked with a summer switch to Manchester United includes Oumar Solet. The Udinese centre-back has impressed at times this season and now has a queue beginning to form for his signature, with United in that queue.

Oumar Solet for Udinese.

Solet isn’t the only defender that has caught the eye of those at Old Trafford, however, with another Serie A star emerging on INEOS’ reported radar.

Man Utd plotting move to sign "superb" Comuzzo

According to Caught Offside, INEOS and Manchester United are now plotting a summer swoop to sign Pietro Comuzzo from Fiorentina this summer and have already sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old in action. Valued at around €45m (£38m) by the Italian club, the deal should be within the Red Devils’ range even as their cost-cutting measures continue around the club.

Dubbed “superb” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Comuzzo’s arrival would instantly see the injured Martinez replaced next season, before Amorim is handed the ultimate selection headache when the Argentine completes his eventual return.

Trial underway: Sunderland now closing in on deal to sign new future star

With one eye on finishing the season strongly ahead of the play-offs and the other on building a squad for the future, Sunderland have now reportedly taken a talented 18-year-old on trial and are closing in on securing his signature.

Sunderland have play-off place secured

With just four games to go in the Championship campaign, Sunderland sit as many as 16 points clear of seventh place West Bromwich Albion and have, therefore, already secured their place in the play-offs. If things stay as they are, then the Black Cats will square off against Sheffield United, who will be the favourites, shock contenders Bristol City and Frank Lampard’s resurgent Coventry City.

As ever though, the drama is far from over in the Championship and anything could still change below Regis Le Bris’ side in the fight to secure a place in the top six come May.

With the pressure off, Le Bris’ side have begun to falter ever so slightly, however, with a 0-0 draw against Norwich City followed up by a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Swansea City to leave those at the Stadium of Light frustrated.

Following defeat against the Welsh side, Le Bris told reporters: “It’s a disappointing result. We had a lot of possession, but it was difficult to create chances – they were well-organised and stuck to their style.

Worry for Le Bris as Newcastle eye possible move for £25m Sunderland star

This would be a massive blow for the Black Cats.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 13, 2025

“They played with an aggressive shape. It wasn’t about keeping the ball – we did that – but we struggled to break them down and create real openings. We have to manage the squad. While the result wasn’t what we wanted, today was an opportunity for some players to get valuable minutes.”

Meanwhile, now that they’ve secured their play-off place no matter what, Sunderland have reportedly had the chance to turn their attention towards signing a future star.

Sunderland closing in on Isaac Allan

Having already offered Crystal Palace fullback Freddie Cowin an opportunity to impress, those at the Stadium of Light have now reportedly taken another young player on trial. According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are now closing in on signing Isaac Allan from Lincoln City with the goalkeeper’s trial already underway and his chance to impress coming against Wolves’ youth side.

The 18-year-old is reportedly open to a summer move away from Lincoln even if the Imps offer him a senior contract at the club and that has seen Sunderland come swooping in.

Sunderland’s interest in a talented young player should come as no surprise. The Stadium of Light has become the land of opportunity for young players in recent years, whether that’s been thanks to the Black Cats’ academy or, indeed, their transfer business.

Sunderland'sChrisRigg

Both Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham are fine examples of that and now Allan could follow in their footsteps towards Le Bris’ side if he completes his move ahead of the summer. Another one for the future, Sunderland are attempting to build a side not only capable of gaining a Premier League place, but also maintaining it for years to come.
