Leeds signing Jack Harrison on a permanent deal is a no-brainer

Ever since Jack Harrison’s return to Elland Road was announced this summer we’ve been wondering how much his permanent clause was set at.

There had been plenty of speculation around the figure as Football Insider stated that it would be in excess of £10m, but this week we found out that Harrison’s services would cost less than first anticipated.

A report from The Athletic states that Harrison’s clause would see him cost Leeds just £8m at the end of the season.

£8m for a man who has undoubtedly been one of your best attacking players this season is an absolute snip. Harrison has contributed to the second most league goals within the United squad this season with 11.

That’s a tally almost three times higher than Helder Costa who has contributed to four efforts, and Leeds are set to pay £15m to land him permanently at the end of the season.

If United’s valuation of wingers is consistent and they believe Costa is worth £15m, then surely £8m falls way below the Man City loanees true value, and the Whites shouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on this one.

The best thing about this is that the 23-year-old has improved exponentially this term as he’s already contributed to four more goals than last season despite being just over halfway through this campaign.

If Harrison continues that rate of growth, then he’ll be a star for years to come, but even if he stays at the same level he’ll be worth way more than £8m.

In other news, the stars may be aligning for Leeds to sign one man.

Celtic fans react to Neil Lennon’s comments on Marian Shved

The recent sale of Scott Sinclair and pending departure of Lewis Morgan have prompted fresh questions regarding Marian Shved’s future at Celtic during a season in which he has featured in just 15 minutes of SPFL action.

The 22-year-old was signed at the beginning of 2019 and was immediately loaned back to Karpaty.

Anticipation naturally began to build prior to his full arrival at Celtic, with a record of 15 goals and four assists in 26 appearances in all competitions during the 2018/19 season lending reason to believe the Hoops were onto a winner.

However, his career has fallen flat thus far and the fact he has been selected in the matchday squad just three times attests to the extent of his anonymity in Glasgow.

But could movements in the transfer market hand the Ukraine international an opportunity to make a breakthrough?

That remains to be seen but recent quotes from Neil Lennon suggest the youngster made a fine impression in Celtic’s Dubai training camp.

In response to his quotes, plenty of the supporters urged Lennon to give the youngster an opportunity to impress during the remainder of the season.

For one fan Shved’s absence this season is difficult to understand.

Dubbed as “one of the best ballers” in the squad, the pattern of the season so far is rather mysterious.

One fan, meanwhile, expressed scepticism over his potential to influence the SPFL title race during the final months of the season.

Indeed, Shved was a key talking point at Celtic Park during the summer and much was expected of him, but his career has failed to take off.

His prolonged absence from the first team squad since his cameo against Ross County, however, suggests there is a long way to go before he breaks into the starting XI.

Finally, this supporter alluded to earlier comments from Lennon and argued his change in tone could be a sign that the player is now settling into his new environment.

Newcastle United: Fans laud Jamaal Lascelles’ return to first team action

After Newcastle United secured a dramatic last gasp 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend courtesy of a goal from Isaac Hayden, supporters have reflected over just how good it was to have Jamaal Lascelles back in the side after his return from injury.

The Londoners, who spurned various opportunities to take the lead at St. James’ Park, were eventually undone by a last-minute goal from Hayden which gifted the Magpies all three points on a memorable afternoon. Steve Bruce’s side, who managed to keep Chelsea out to go on and nick the game, were helped in part by the return of Lascelles – with the Englishman winning 100% of his attempted aerial duels and accumulating a 7.4 rating on WhoScored.com.

As a result, supporters have lauded his return to the first team ahead of the second portion of their campaign – with one fan even going on to hint that he is better than Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

By comparison, Lascelles edges his compatriot in terms of blocks (0.9) and clearances (5.4) made per game – whilst Maguire eclipses the Magpies defender when it comes to successful tackles (1.1) on average in the Premier League. Taking this into account, Newcastle fans have lauded his return to the team – find some of their best comments from Twitter down below.

Liverpool target Timo Werner has received glowing endorsements

According to a recent report from Daily Mirror, Liverpool are interested in acquiring the services of RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner but might face some competition from fellow Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The 23-year-old goal-machine – who scored a total of 25 goals and assisted a further ten in the first 26 games he’s played for the club in 2019/20 – is rated at £60m, as per the same outlet.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Mirror also go on to state that Jurgen Klopp has been a long-time admirer of his compatriot.

But is Werner really good enough to slot into the Reds’ star filled squad?

To answer that question we sought the opinions of those who know him best…

Joshua Kimmich, Bayern Munich star

Kimmich was full of praise for his rival back when Bayern Munich were set to face RB Leipzig in the DFB Cup final and he singled him out as one of the opposition’s most dangerous players.

He hailed his pace and proficiency in the box, stating that Werner can finish with both of his feet and his head.

Here’s what Kimmich said, as quoted by Bundesliga.com:

“He’s unbelievably quick, has a tremendous nose for goal and is a great finisher.

“He doesn’t take long to finish things off. He can score with his right, left and his head.”

Dayot Upamecano, Werner’s teammate

RB Leipzig’s defender Dayot Upamecano had to face Werner on numerous occasions during their training sessions at the club and he’s pretty happy that he doesn’t have to do that in real games.

When speaking to Bundesliga.com, the defender emphasised how the 23-year-old forward could go on to become one of the best strikers in the world and hailed his technique and finishing.

It has to be noted that the quote was taken from a couple of years ago but Werner is still young and that makes Upamecano’s prophecy still very much possible.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the not so distant future.

Here’s what he said in full:

“I’m happy we’re on the same team because he’s difficult for opposition players to stop; his pace, his exceptional technique and finishing – he’s a class striker.

“He definitely has the potential to become one of the best strikers in the world.”

Gerald Asamoah, Former Germany and Schalke star

Finally, Asamoah was also left in awe of Werner’s ability. In fact, so much so that he said that Germany can win the World Cup with him in tow, that’s how confident he was in the youngster.

Of course, that was prior to the tournament’s 2018 iteration in Russia, and even though they couldn’t clinch the title, the former Schalke star clearly believes RB Leipzig’s forward has developed sensationally.

At Stuttgart, he wasn’t a complete striker but at Leipzig that has completely changed.

Here’s what he said in full, as quoted by Bundesliga.com:

“With him, Germany can win the World Cup. He’s a strong finisher, very fast, can get in behind defences and create space in deep-lying positions. Timo Werner is just very, very good.

“You have to ask yourself, what happened to the boy in Leipzig? He was pretty good in Stuttgart, but not a complete scorer – how he’s developed at Leipzig is sensational.”

Verdict

If Klopp really wants to add more firepower to his already well-oiled machine, Werner seems like the perfect fit.

He’s quick, strong and lethal in the opposition’s box and Liverpool would surely be getting a fantastic player.

Sunderland targeting Bobby Duncan on loan

Sunderland could make a ‘surprise’ loan move for Bobby Duncan before the transfer deadline closes, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

What’s the word?

Sunderland are pursuing late business in the window after bringing in Josh Scowen earlier this week.

The Black Cats are eyeing a deal for Declan John of Swansea after Phil Parkinson confirmed the club’s interest following their 1-0 win over Tranmere on Wednesday evening.

Roker Report would go onto claim that their interest was only in a temporary move. However, as well as adding to their defensive ranks, a player could arrive to bolster the final third too.

Calling all transfer experts! Can you get all 15 questions right on our Deadline Day quiz?

Former Liverpool academy man Duncan is in their sights after failing to really make a breakthrough in Italy with Fiorentina.

Taking to Twitter, Nixon revealed.

Nail in the coffin for Grigg?

Will Grigg has been linked with moves away from the club this January but it was reported yesterday that he didn’t fancy dropping down to League 2 in order to exit the Stadium of Light.

The forward has attracted the interest of Bradford, although journalist Keith Downie claims the Black Cats have swiftly rejected that offer.

Parkinson noted in his Wednesday press conference: “If he’s here past Friday, great, we look forward to working with him. If something comes up, then we’ll have a chat.”

That something could either be a lucrative offer from a further club, something that clearly betters what Bradford offered previously, or indeed it might now be a loan move for Duncan.

If the 18-year-old arrives then it would feel pointless to keep Grigg around. After all, he’s struggling for a place in the team as it is, having scored once all season in the league and not starting since December.

Duncan hasn’t featured for Fiorentina’s first-team since his summer arrival but he does have four strikes in nine outings for their academy sides.

It would be a risk but certainly one worth taking given his promise. A view to a permanent deal could also be impressive business.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are eyeing a further loan move before the window slams shut on Friday…

Leeds’ Mateusz Klich jokes about shocking miss on social media

Leeds United are top of the Championship, but they’ve been far from convincing at times this season. One man who seems to have dipped from last term is Mateusz Klich as he’s been unable to recreate the goalscoring form that saw him score 10 league goals last season.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, the Pole hasn’t had his shooting boots on this season, and he missed a gilt-edged chance to put Leeds 4-2 up on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder skied a chance from close range with less than ten minutes to go. Fortunately, the miss didn’t come back to haunt him as United held on to their lead, and the Pole even joked about his gaffe on social media after the match.

The Pole stated that the ball was on the M1, and while his miss was a shocker it would have been some effort to have reached the motorway as Elland Road is in fact next to the M621.

The 29-year-old jokingly asked anyone who found the ball to send it back to Thorp Arch, but with Klich missing by such a distance it’d be quite hard for anyone to find it.

Arsenal fans discuss John Cross’ report on potential Arsene Wenger return

Could Arsene Wenger finally make his return to the Emirates?

Arsenal’s longest-serving manager has been conspicuous by his absence since departing the club after more than two decades at the helm back in 2018.

But according to The Daily Mirror’s John Cross, that could all be set to change. The journalist claims the Gunners hierarchy are “keen to welcome Wenger back to the Emirates and it is understood senior figures at the club have been making inroads to talk him into it.”

It’s further suggested the club are keen for his return in order to help “garner support from the fans”, and help Mikel Arteta’s process of getting the team back to where it should be.

After hearing about the report, supporters of the north London side took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation, with many seemingly delighted at his potential comeback.

Some fans however took the opposite point of view, insisting that he ruined the club in his final few years at the club.

Whether it’s intended to help energise the fan-base, or simply honour one of the greatest managers in footballing history, getting Wenger to come back to the Emirates should be a no-brainer.

The Frenchman deserves to have that choice, after all the years of trophies and success he enjoyed at the club. Whilst things didn’t end as he may have wanted, his place in the history books can never be erased.

The Gunners would would be doing the right thing by inviting Le Professeur back to Arsenal.

Leeds have been missing Kalvin Phillips’ playmaking abilities

Kalvin Phillips’ suspension is finally over, and it’s fair to say that Leeds have been missing him a little bit.

Indeed, the Whites picked up three points from a possible nine without the 24-year-old available for selection, and they were lucky to even get that many as they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Millwall.

The holding midfield role is one of the most important in Bielsa’s system due to how much cover he provides the backline, but it wasn’t just Phillips’ defensive contribution that United have been missing.

Phillips’ brilliance

Of course, it’d be foolish to say that his defending hasn’t been missed at all.

Phillips averages the seventh most tackles per game of any player in the Championship, and his defensive brilliance is there for all to see.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

It’s no coincidence that Leeds have conceded in each of the last three games they’ve played without their talisman, and hopefully, his return can steady the ship in that area.

However, what makes Phillips one of the best players in the division isn’t just his ability at the back, the midfielder also has a great eye for a pass and that’s something Leeds have been missing.

Playmaking abilities

The Whites haven’t just struggled at the back without Phillips, they’ve also faltered up top.

They’ve failed to score in each of their last two games, and against Nottingham Forest they were completely uninspired going forward, testing the goalkeeper with just one shot on target.

The fact of the matter is that Phillips isn’t known as the Yorkshire Pirlo for no reason, and he’s as much of a playmaker as he is a tough tackler.

The midfielder has been averaging two key passes per game from defensive midfield, and the men that have stepped in to replace him just haven’t hit those heights.

Ben White didn’t play a single key pass on Saturday, and Mateusz Klich also failed to play a single key pass the week before against Wigan when he was occupying the defensive midfield position.

His creativity is often overlooked due to his amazing defensive contributions, many have stated that he’s vital in Leeds playing out from the back, but he’s also brilliant when it comes to finding a killer ball, and that’s one thing that Leeds have been missing.

In other news, Leeds may have the perfect Kalvin Phillips successor already in their ranks.

Leeds fans react to Phil Hay’s tweet about Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is the talk of the town at the moment.

The 19-year-old is continuing to make headlines around the continent, and after netting a brace against PSG on Tuesday night the world of football was once again in awe of the former RB Salzburg man.

One of those that couldn’t help but wax lyrical about Haaland was Phil Hay.

So, what has this got to do with Leeds United?

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The Whites looked into signing the youngster in the summer of 2018, but they were priced out of a move as the Austrian outfit offered a financial package that the Yorkshire club simply couldn’t match.

Understandably, a number of United fans expressed that they were gutted to have missed out on the striker after his heroics for Borussia Dortmund.

Others were still holding out hope that Leeds could still sign him one day.

One fan even directed his message at Andrea Radrizzani, imploring the chairman to sign him up.

Other United supporters were simply in awe of the attacker.

You can’t help but be stunned when watching Haaland, and his goalscoring record certainly reflects that as well, netting a goal every 46 minutes in the Champions League.

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa’s legacy may be at stake this season.

Arsenal should be thanking Bernd Leno not Aubameyang

After falling behind within the first minute of their clash against Everton on Sunday afternoon, Arsenal eventually managed to turn things around and eke out a 3-2 victory at the Emirates.

The Gunners made life difficult for themselves, conceding twice from set-pieces, and needed goals from Eddie Nketiah and Pierre-Emerick Auvameyang (2), to seal all three points.

But whilst Mikel Arteta took the opportunity to hail the latter as his side’s “most important player” following his latest goal-scoring display, one man who the north Londoners should instead be directing their praise towards, is Bernd Leno.

Watch Arsenal Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The German has had a busy campaign in between the sticks for the Gunners, with his total of 98 saves in the Premier League putting him only behind Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka in the rankings. That is a remarkable statistic given Arsenal’s status as a big side, and points to just how frail their defence has been all season.

Leno has had to be on his A-game for much of the season, and against Everton, he produced exactly that. Whilst there may be some blame at his door for not being quick enough to deny Richarlison’s equaliser, the 27-year-old more than made up for it with a string of hugely impressive stops, with all of them coming from efforts taken inside the box.

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top flight transfer flops…

The most eye-catching one was undeniably the point-blank reflex save to stop Dominic Calvert-Lewin making it 3-3 in the second-half. After a downward header from Richarlison saw the Toffees striker receive the ball just yards from the net, Leno stuck out a flailing right arm to deflect the ball away from the most improbable of situations.

And then, just to show that he is as good with his feet as he is with his hands, he scampered from his goal to clear a superbly weighted pass from Andre Gomes that almost set Richarlison free.

Having scored two goals, Aubameyang will no doubt make the headlines for the game. But in reality, the Gunners should be really thankful for having Leno as their goalkeeper as they picked up all three points.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans discuss this man’s absence from the match-day squad against Everton.
