Tottenham’s Mourinho can build a legacy with Bellingham move

Amidst the countless European and domestic trophies Jose Mourinho has won in his time as a manager, the one asterisk hanging above his head is his development of youngsters – or the lack of it to be precise.

The Portuguese man has been at the helm of some of the biggest and financially rich sides in Europe, including the likes of Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United. All of them flush with cash, and happy to spend big sums of money.

And in this cut-throat world of instant success, and lack of patience for building for the future, it is perhaps unsurprising that Mourinho doesn’t seem to be looked on favourably when it comes to bringing through young talent.

You only have to look at the career path of Kevin De Bruyne to see that – a man who was on Chelsea’s books whilst the Special One was in charge, before eventually ending up at Manchester City and becoming one of the Premier League’s elite players.

It’s a fact that wasn’t lost on Frank Lampard, when he appeared to take a thinly-veiled dig at Mourinho after the Blues’ win over Spurs back in December.

“If we’re not patient and we don’t stick with the players then you might be in a situation where we have been before, where top world-class players have been at Chelsea when they were 20 or 21, but the managers maybe didn’t stick with them so much then.”

But with reports in recent days suggesting that Spurs have entered the race to sign Birmingham prodigy Jude Bellingham, there is a massive opportunity for him to rectify that.

Bellingham, just 16, has established himself as a key part of the Championship side, making an impressive 34 appearances across all competitions for the first-team. It is no surprise therefore that the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are amongst the top sides being linked with a potential swoop for the midfielder.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

But if Spurs can manage to fend off interest from their league rivals, and lure the starlet to north London, then it gives Mourinho the perfect chance to create a fresh legacy for himself.

It will give him a prodigy coveted by some of the biggest sides, and a potential player to build an entire team around for the next decade at the least. Bellingham’s arrival would give Mourinho an opportunity to silence the naysayers, and prove to everyone that he doesn’t need his team to spend bucket loads of money to achieve trophies and relative success.

It may change people’s perception of his approach to management, and do wonders for the way people remember him when he eventually calls it quits.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are scouting this Ligue 1 powerhouse.

Ex-Spurs boss Mourinho backs Kane to win the club a top-four place

Harry Redknapp believes that Harry Kane’s return could pull Tottenham Hotspur over the line in the race to finish in the top four, per PA Sport via FourFourTwo.

What’s the word?

The Spurs striker sustained a serious hamstring injury against Southampton on New Year’s Day and has since undergone surgery.

Manager Jose Mourinho revealed last week, though, that he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and could “help us in the last few games of the season”.

And Redknapp believes that Kane’s comeback could propel Spurs into the top four; they are currently five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after successive defeats to the Blues and Wolves.

He said: “To have him available for the Euros is going to be very important and, for Tottenham, they’re still looking to get a top-four finish so he could help push them over the line and get where they want to be.

“It’s going to be tight there. It’s very open. Tottenham have got a good squad of players. I know they’ve got a couple of injuries at the moment but they’ve still got enough good players to really push for that fourth spot.

“It’s great to see Harry getting fit. He’s a fantastic boy, great professional and great player.”

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

Got to stay in touch

Kane’s return will surely boost Spurs.

He scored 11 goals in 20 league outings prior to his injury and they have been operating without a central striker since his injury, given the lack of senior alternatives to the England skipper. Troy Parrott is an option but does not appear to be trusted by Mourinho.

Nevertheless, the question is whether Spurs can remain in touch with the top four.

They have been in poor form and also have Son Heung-Min out injured at this point; since his arm issue, Spurs haven’t won a game.

The question, then, is whether they will even be in touch with the top four when Kane returns.

They have a difficult run-in, playing the likes of Manchester United, West Ham United, Sheffield United, Arsenal, and Leicester City prior to the season’s conclusion.

If they cannot take maximum points from at least three of those games, one has to think that Kane’s return may well be too little, too late.

Meanwhile, Spurs are in a “mess”, according to this man!

West Brom fans share mixed opinions on Romaine Sawyers

West Brom lost top place in the Championship for the first time in a while after they failed to win against Swansea.

The Baggies have now failed to win in three matches and a failure to score against Wigan and Swansea may be of concern to Slaven Bilic and the squad, though it isn’t showing.

Romaine Sawyers spoke after the match having made a return to action following suspension, and his positivity suggests that he and his teammates are capable of showing enough in the remaining nine matches.

The midfielder spoke of the importance of those games and how he is treating them “like finals”, which shows the level of commitment that the team is prepared to show, and they will hope they can produce the quality to match.

The 28-year-old has impressed many throughout the season, including manager Slaven Bilic who has started him in 33 league fixtures this term. Some fans have praised Sawyers once more after the Swansea match.

Sawyers will likely have an important role to play over the next few weeks as he has been key to West Brom’s possession-based style of play, achieving 90% pass accuracy to help the Baggies to an average of 54% possession across the Championship season.

However, in the run-in at the end of the season it is often fight and desire that enables teams to continue winning, as fatigue and nerves could set in when the Premier League draws insight.

As a result, some fans have called for Sawyers to start showing that little bit extra which could be vital to ensuring the Midlands outfit maintain the gap to Fulham and their other promotion rivals.

Sunderland interest in Wouter Verstraaten revealed by player

Wouter Verstraaten is a player on Sunderland’s radar, and he has spoken about his recent experience of the club and the possibility of him joining the Black Cats.

What did he say?

Sunderland took a look at the player earlier this year and allowed the Dutchman to take part in a match against Liverpool U23s, and the interest may not have stopped there.

Verstraaten came though at PSV Eindhoven but has struggled at the professional level and now finds himself at nearby South Shields.

He isn’t exactly young at 24 years of age, too, but he has been described as a “Rolls Royce” defender and if Phil Parkinson and Co like what they see, then signing him may be a worthwhile gamble.

The player has spoken about the chnaces of that happening and reflected on the trial period he had at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagblad, he said:

“They had seen me play and showed interest. Special, yes. Half a year ago I played football at Geldrop and now I was allowed to test at Sunderland … I am realistic.”

The outlet also reports that Verstraaten is currently in negotiations with the club over a contract, which means he could join in the summer if accurate.

Worthwhile risk?

Phil Parkinson has built his relative success in the north-east on the strength of Sunderland’s defence, which he has proved drastically since coming in.

Sunderland’s record of eight goals conceded in 13 games underlines that point. The Black Cats have conceded the second-least amount of goals in League One and therefore Parkinson knows not only what makes a good defender, but how to get the best out of them too.

As a result, the arrival of Verstraaten, if he was to join, may rise a few eyebrows, but there is no need to doubt Parkinson or his decision-making, and signing the centre-back may prove to be inspired.

Given he is plying his trade in non-league he would also likely arrive at little cost, and if he learns from experienced players like Joel Lynch and Jordan Willis he is likely to improve.

Spurs fans react to Madrid offering Luka Jovic

Tottenham Hotspur will have a chance to make amends this summer after failing to secure a striker during the January transfer window, and they may have been handed one on a plate.

According to the Mirror, Real Madrid flop will be offered to Spurs and Chelsea with there seemingly no way back for him at the La Liga giants.

This comes after he broke self-isolation protocol by flying back to his homeland, Serbia, last week while his teammates were all in quarantine at home.

Both London clubs are said to have held long interest in him and will now be given the opportunity to sign him at the end of the season.

And fans have been discussing the potential of snatching him from their grasp, here’s what has been said…

Many were of the same opinion that the frontman would be most welcome in north London, describing the move as a “no brainer” whilst Jovic was lauded for being “young” and “hungry” as well as a “great player”.

After earning a £55m (€60m) move from Frankfurt following a 27-goal season, the young forward has failed to live up to expectations at the Bernabeu, scoring just twice in 24 appearances.

This latest saga is surely pushing him closer to the exit door under Zinedine Zidane, but some members of the Spurs faithful have their doubts given Daniel Levy’s tough negotiating history.

One supporter brandished the reports as “funny”as a result.

There was even a call from one fan for the club to swap leading talisman Harry Kane and £30m for Jovic’s services next season so that they can strengthen the rest of Jose Mourinho’s playing squad.

Dejphon Chansiri owes a lot to Amadeu Paixao

Sheffield Wednesday have a very strong squad.

It may not seem like it due to their current form and league position, but the Owls have a number of solid players on their books.

The likes of Barry Bannan, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Hutchinson and Tom Lees have proven their quality in the Championship before under Carlos Carvalhal as they starred in the Owls’ back to back playoff runs, and while they’ve not all been that effective under Garry Monk, their quality shouldn’t be doubted.

Indeed, the Steel City outfit have a strong squad, and when they’re on it they’re one of the best teams in the division.

Just look at how they performed for the first half of this season, they were third after 23 games, and under Steve Bruce, they lost just three of 18 games.

The Yorkshire club have a talented crop of players at the club, and a lot of that is down to one man.

Amadeu Paixao is a rarely-seen figure at Hillsborough, but it can’t be underestimated just how important he is to the club.

It’s easy for Wednesday fans to have ill feelings towards anyone in a position of power at the club, after all, they’re currently under investigation from the EFL for breaching financial rules, but Paixao is one man the fans should have a lot of time for.

Dejphon Chansiri’s recent interview with Dom Howson revealed just how much good work he has done at the Yorkshire club.

“He is my personal adviser and part of our recruitment committee. Amadeu is a valuable resource for myself and our club has been in football for a long time, 25 years, and has a lot of experience and many, many contacts,” Chansiri said.

Normally I do not name individual players and how we recruited them but to be fair to Amadeu, he recommended Fernando, Barry Bannan, Lucas Joao and more recently Dominic Iorfa, who I am sure everyone agrees has the potential to go a long way in football. I can also tell you that if it was not for Amadeu, Fernando may well have gone to another club when he left Watford,” He continued.

Perhaps the chairman was just defending his friend after speaking about the criticism he has received from certain sections of the fanbase, but if the above revelations are true, the backroom staff member deserves a lot of credit.

It’s not going too far to say that Barry Bannan, Forestieri and Iorfa are three of the best signings Wednesday have made in recent years with Iorfa and Bannan both playing over 30 league games this term and the Italian once winning the Owls’ Player of the Year award.

Chansiri owes a lot to his right hand man, and everyone will be hoping that Paixao can continue to work this type of magic for years to come.

Leeds fans swoon over Stuart Dallas footage

Leeds United fans are loving their versatile midfielder Stuart Dallas even more after footage of him banging a few goals in emerged on the club’s official Twitter feed.

The 28-year-old has been a frequent presence at Elland Road ever since joining in the summer of 2015 from league rivals Brentford, linking up with his former boss Uwe Rosler.

Dallas may have only netted 17 times for the Whites, but there are enough corkers for a showreel as seen below.

It has led to some supporters eyeing him up to claim the ‘Player of the Season’ award whilst others in west Yorkshire have just been left drooling over his exploits.

There were even comparisons made to ex-youth product and now Champions League winner James Milner as well as the Irishman being a better finisher than his teammate and top goalscorer, Patrick Bamford.

Crystal Palace: Fans react as Patrick Van Aanholt is linked with Paris Saint Germain move

After being linked with a move to PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, per Sky Sports, Patrick Van Aanholt is reportedly now a transfer target for French giants Paris Saint Germain, according to Eindhovens Dagblad and a lot of Crystal Palace fans are reacting to this news on Twitter, via CPFC News HQ.

The Dutch left-back has been a fan favourite since joining the club in 2017 for £9.45 million from Sunderland, per Transfermarkt, featuring 97 times and managing to score 13 goals along the way.

This season he has performed well at both ends of the pitch, managing 1.5 interceptions and 1.4 tackles on average per game, whilst also averaging 1.1 key passes and 1 shot per top flight match, via WhoScored.

The player seems pivotal to the side due to the fact that he does help both from an attacking and defensive perspective, and if he did leave it would be hard to find a player who can do the same for a price that is not massively inflated. It shows how good a role he plays on the pitch when Ligue 1 champions PSG want the player.

Leeds fans want Illan Meslier as their number one, not Joe Hart

Leeds United fans have been discussing the future of their goalkeeper position this week after fresh reports emerged linking them with a new shot-stopper.

Marcelo Bielsa began the season opting for Kiko Casilla between the sticks until he picked up an eight-game ban for racial abuse, which has handed an opportunity to Lorient loanee Illan Meslier, who impressed in his only appearances beforehand – an FA Cup outing against Arsenal.

It’s thought that the club are willing to splash £5m to make the temporary switch permanent, but that hasn’t stopped new speculation over the number one spot.

According to Football Insider, former Man City keeper Joe Hart would be willing to take a pay cut to join the west Yorkshire outfit in the top-flight.

The 33-year-old’s £70k-per-week contract at Burnley expires at the end of the season, so he will be available on a free transfer this summer.

However, it is Meslier who many at Elland Road are demanding – not Hart, not Casilla.
