Newcastle fans react to Fabian Schar’s performance

[ad_pod ]

A late Willy Boly header earned Wolves a point against Newcastle United at Molineux on Monday night. Rafa Benitez will have been gutted to see his side lose their lead in such a fashion, but will generally be proud of their display.

The equaliser itself was shrouded in some controversy, as Boly arguably fouled the Magpies’ goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, on his way to heading the ball in. Defensively, though, questions must be asked of the Toon Army. Fabian Schar, in particular, should have done more to challenge the rising Wolves man.

The Switzerland international had an eventful game all round. Whilst he was at times sloppy in possession, and arguably culpable for the goal conceded late on, he also provided one of the stand out moments of the match.

Early in the second half, the 27-year-old broke forward from the defence with the ball at his feet and ran at the Wolves rearguard. He then slid through a perfectly weighted pass for Isaac Hayden to latch onto, who then slammed the ball home to give the Tyneside outfit the lead.

Schar, then, endured a game of ups and downs, which generated plenty of interest and debate on Twitter. Here’s a look at how the 46-cap Switzerland international’s performance divided Newcastle fans…

Newcastle fans love Salomon Rondon’s training ground goal

[ad_pod ]

The 2018-19 campaign is not finished, but Newcastle United’s signing of Salomon Rondon last summer has to be considered a success.

Following a whole host of speculation, Rondon joined Newcastle on loan from West Bromwich Albion, with Dwight Gayle moving in the opposite direction.

The powerful forward has scored seven times in 21 appearances for the Magpies, including six Premier League goals for Rafael Benitez’s side.

Newcastle are currently 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone, despite winning two of their last four in the league.

This weekend, Benitez’s team have a huge game at home to Huddersfield Town.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

On Thursday, Rondon shared a video of a smart finish that he produced during a training session ahead of the clash with the struggling Terriers.

And the Newcastle fans have urged the South American to do the same this weekend.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Andre Schurrle would be a good option for Newcastle if they stay up and Fulham go down

Newcastle would like to think that their recent efforts on the pitch will push them far away from their relegation concerns.

Having faced the very real possibility of Championship football once again, Rafa Benitez will be happy to see the resurgence from his team as they bid to remain in the top flight.

With a few standout players, Newcastle shouldn’t be battling relegation but lack of spending has meant Newcastle have failed to kick on.

Whether they want to make improvements next season is solely down to Mike Ashley and if he wants to spend any more money.

If the answer is surprisingly yes, Fulham’s Andre Schurrle should be a serious target with the bags of experience he would bring to St James’ Park.

Schurrle, (who is valued at £13.5 million on Transfermarkt) has been one of few promising players within Fulham’s team this season, who are facing the very real possibility of getting relegated this season.

Newcastle are far from safe themselves but have a much better survival rate than the Cottagers, who could be heading straight back down.

One of their players is far too good for Championship football and that’s Andre Schurrle, a star Newcastle must look to sign if they remain in the top flight.

The former German international has scored six times in the Premier League this season and has played everywhere from out wide to attacking midfield.

It could be argued that Newcastle’s team is a lot stronger and therefore, Schurrle’s goal contribution could increase further with more chances being created.

With relegation a possibility and that fact he would only have one year left on his deal with Fulham, Andre Schurrle could be available at a reduced rate, a deal Newcastle must look to take advantage of.

Skrtel could be the perfect Worrall replacement for Gerrard and Rangers

Rangers central defender Joe Worrall came in for plenty of praise after his side’s 1-1 Scottish Cup draw away at Aberdeen over the weekend with the 22-year-old grabbing the Glasgow club’s equaliser.

“I thought Joe was outstanding,” Rangers manager Steven Gerrard told The Scottish Sun after the game. “It was a man-of-the-match performance and he will be a captain of whatever team he plays for.”

Gerrard’s words on Worrall’s suitability to be captain wherever he plays is a clear hint that the Nottingham Forest loanee is likely to return to and remain at the City Ground next season.

And if that turns out to be the case, Gerrard will undoubtedly need to bring in a new centre-half with Martin Skrtel a possible candidate to come in.

Skrtel, who was linked with a move to Ibrox last summer (via Daily Record), is set to leave Fenerbahce at the end of the campaign when his contract expires and would be a name who could bring so much to Gerrard’s side.

A strong tackler and dominant presence in the air, Skrtel has the sort of experience that would give Rangers a huge boost in any potential SPL title race against rivals Celtic.

Should Worrall return to England, then Rangers should look no further than Skrtel when it comes to bringing in a replacement.

Newcastle United: Alan Shearer and Rafa Benitez are great minds who think alike

Rafa Benitez expressed his delight at Newcastle legend Alan Shearer’s positive comments about the St James’ Park atmosphere during the second half comeback win against Everton.

Shearer described the noise from the stands as the loudest he’d witnessed in a long time, and Rafa admitted that the increased decibels show that the team are doing things right on the pitch.

Speaking to NUFC TV about Al’s comments, Benitez said: “Obviously he knows what it means to have this atmosphere around the stadium, so I’m really pleased also with these words.

“What that means is that something is right at the moment in the stadium and around the team.”

As long as Rafa has the public backing of former Newcastle stars — particularly those with legendary status, like Shearer — the Spaniard will always keep the fans on his side. It makes his position stronger when it comes to negotiations with the club hierarchy about the sticking points of a new contract.

Speaking of the importance of the three points against Everton in the context of the relegation battle, and the fact that the usually muted reactions from the bench were replaced by wild celebrations when Perez struck the winner, Benitez said: “Obviously we know that we are in the relegation battle and that we have to win a lot of games if we want to stay up.

“So I think everybody was feeling how important it was to get the [winning] goal, how important the result was – and this reaction [the celebrations] is normal.

He admitted it is helpful when other results go your way, it is more pivotal to win when they don’t — as was the case on Saturday.

He added: “It’s always important to do your job and just try to keep winning games, [and] it was therefore important for us to show the fighting spirit throughout the game.

“You could see the team was pushing and pushing until the end, and that is the key if you want to stay up.”

There will still be many ups and downs between now and the end of the season, but as long as the fans, and legends, keep backing the team as they did on Saturday, then surely safety will be achieved sooner rather than later, then the real issue of Rafa’s new contract can be addressed.

Dominic Fifield thinks it’s only a matter of time before Wilfried Zaha leaves Crystal Palace

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace host Brighton this weekend in one of the Premier League’s most bizarre yet intense derbies and both sides will be hoping that they can take all three points, as well as the bragging rights for the remainder of the season.

Such is the immense emotion surrounding the clash, this fixture feels like a cup final for each team and no-one in the Palace ranks gets up for the game more than Wilfried Zaha – the Ivorian will inevitably be at the centre of the occasion once again this Saturday and for each time the two bitter rivals meet beyond it.

However, The Guardian’s London football correspondent – and resident Palace fan – Dominic Fifield thinks that the 26-year-old might not be involved in too many of these fixtures going forward, considering the interest he has accumulated from some of Europe’s big boys.

Here’s what Fifield had to say:

“In an age where south London is a difficult place to live and for kids to grow up, I think he [Zaha] is an inspiration to a lot of people. I know he is vilified by opposing fans up and down the country but he is just really, really good. Palace have a proper talent in their ranks, a player who could get into any Champions League team and make an impact.

“I have long since taken the view that I am just going to enjoy it while it lasts because I can’t see how they can keep him much longer. Even with his occasional shows of petulance, he has just been thrilling to watch and to think that he is home-grown adds to it all. He personifies this team and what they have achieved in the past six years as [Ian] Wrighty did the other one.”

It’s certainly true that many Palace fans won’t hasten to admit that they didn’t expect the electric Ivorian to still be an Eagle after the years of brilliance he has provided at Selhurst Park.

There is, of course, the possibility that the tricky number 11 will remain in South London, going on to become one of Palace’s greats but, surely the SE25 faithful would find it hard to blame him if he was to secure a move away in the next couple of years to a top club in search of European football.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

Palace are trying to take enormous strides both on and off the pitch and Zaha will be essential to that – as long as they can keep him for another couple of years at least.
