Charlton Athletic may be on their way to Wembley for the League One play-off final against Sunderland, and they may have won eight of their last ten matches, but if they are to reach the promised land of the Championship Lee Bowyer should make some changes to his starting line-up.

Swap Josh Parker for Jonny Williams

Bowyer has done a fine job in the dugout throughout the season, but his faith in Josh Parker is questionable and probably born out of necessity more than anything else. The striker has failed to find the net in 12 games for the Addicks, and the lack of service he offers Lyle Taylor could prove Charlton’s downfall on Sunday. Jonny Williams, by comparison, provides that magic which could turn and win a game.

At 1-1 in the second leg, Parker missed a golden opportunity from just three yards out – unforgivable in such a massive game. Williams meanwhile showed composure at a key stage of the game, brought fresh life and ideas to the Charlton attack and would surely love to score against his former club at Wembley.

Switch Purrington for Chris Solly or Naby Sarr

The other player who needs to drop to the bench is Ben Purrington. Since arriving at The Valley he has been solid but unspectacular and Charlton need more from their full backs if they are going to overhaul Sunderland – especially if they play a midfield diamond or three at the back.

Chris Solly is ever-reliable and could move to left-back, while although Naby Sarr put hearts in mouths when his penalty was saved in the shoot-out against Doncaster, he is better at tackling and is stronger in the air. He could deal better with the threat posed by Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien and Max Power down the right flank.

Bowyer has placed his trust in both Parker and Purrington since their January arrivals, and the team has no doubt produced better results since the New Year. However, Sunderland are a different proposition to most in League One and in a final the team has to be clinical both with and without the ball.

There’s no question that Steven Gerrard is one of the best players to represent and wear the armband for Liverpool.

The midfielder was the heartbeat for the Merseyside club for the good part of 17 years, slipped from Liverpool’s grasp in the 2013/14 season in the final games.

A moment in time – Steven Gerrard’s last game for Liverpool

Gerrard is and will always be a Liverpool legend, and when it came time for him to leave the club at the end of the 2014/15 season, fans were hoping the Reds captain would be able to cap off nearly two decades with the team in style.

The former England international’s final Premier League match would be against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, easy enough, right?

If you were to tell a Liverpool fan before the game it was going to be a record-breaking match in many ways, they would have suspected the Reds were about to put Stoke to the sword and give their titan of a captain the send-off he deserved after years of immaculate service.

Oh, how wrong they would be.

Three goals in the space of eight minutes from Stoke saw the Potters 3-0 up heading into the half-hour mark, and two more strikes from former Red Charlie Adam and future France international Steven N’Zonzi in the first half made it 5-0 to the hosts as the teams walked down the tunnel for half-time.

Disbelief, horror, and laughter ran across the stadium. Gerrard, one of the best Premier League midfielders of his generation and a hero to Liverpool Football Club, was on the receiving end of one the worst send-offs in the history of send-offs, surely it couldn’t get any worse?

It got worse.

News came through that Tottenham had taken the lead against Everton, meaning the Reds were likely to finish the season in 6th place and in a Europa League qualifying spot, but on the 70th minute mark, Rickie Lambert put Gerrard through on goal, and as Marc Muniesa gave up on chasing down the midfielder, the Liverpool captain slotted the ball past Asmir Begovic to score in his final game as a Red.

Former Liverpool man Peter Crouch would add a sixth five minute from time, and as the full-time whistle blew, reality had set in that Gerrard’s final ever game for his club was actually a 6-1 loss to Stoke City.

It was the first time in 52 years Liverpool had conceded six goals in the first division and the result meant Stoke finished in the top half of the Premier League table for the first time in years.

It was, quite frankly, the worst possible send-off Gerrard could have ever received, but looking back on it, it could arguably be Liverpool’s last embarrassing result as Jurgen Klopp was brought in the following season and has transformed the club completely from Europa League regulars to two-time Champions League finalists.

وعن ذلك، قال كلوب في تصريحات نشرها الموقع الرسمي للنادي: “أنظر، مشكلتي هي أنني أفكر في ما هو قادم، في كيفية خوض المباراة التالية وأشياء من هذا القبيل، ربما في المستقبل ستكون هناك لحظة لإدراك ما حققناه في الماضي، وآمل آنذاك أن يكون الرقم مختلف وليس 64 مباراة فقط”.

وأضاف: “ولكن في الوقت ذاته هو أمر لا يُصدق تمامًا، ولكن الأمر يتعلق كله بالأولاد، من الصعب حقًا تحقيق شيء كهذا، ولكنهم حققوه بالفعل، لقد قلتها عدة مرات من قبل، نحن نستمتع باللعب هنا، إنه ملعبنا، منزلنا، كل شيء هنا يجعلك تشعر بأنك في بيتك، حتى عندما لا تتواجد الجماهير هنا، لا يبدو الأمر على ما يرام ولكن علينا القيام بذلك ونحن سعداء لأنه يمكننا اللعب”.

وتابع: “السبب الوحيد وراء تحقيق ذلك الرقم هو الأداء المذهل الذي يقدمه اللاعبون على أرض الملعب، من الواضح أنه من الصعب جدًا تسجيل أرقام قياسية لهذا النادي الرائع، لأن آبائنا أو أجدادنا كانوا جيدين جدًا”.

واستكمل: “بتحقيق هذا الرقم القياسي الآن فأنا سعيد للاعبين، لكني لا أشعر وكأنها لحظة كبيرة لأكون صادقًا، لأننا سنخوض مباراة يوم الأربعاء، وهذا في الواقع هو مصدر قلقي الوحيد في الوقت الحالي”.

يُذكر أن ليفربول سيواجه أتالانتا يوم الأربعاء القادم في الجولة الرابعة من دور مجموعات دوري أبطال أوروبا.

Liverpool fans are going berserk on Twitter after owner John W. Henry said the Reds will spend again in the transfer window this summer to try and win the Premier League.

Not too long ago, more than a small minority of Liverpool fans were growing infuriated with owners Fenway Sports Group.

Just a few seasons later, and FSG, led by Henry, have helped bring Jurgen Klopp and countless fantastic signings to Anfield, leading to the phenomenal campaign the Reds have enjoyed this term.

And while a sixth Champions League title for the club would feel like the cherry on the cake, Henry is not planning on slowing down.

He told Sky Sports that beating Tottenham in Madrid on Saturday will not make up for missing out on the long-awaited Premier League title, and that the club will invest again this summer to ensure they challenge domestically next year.

In the recently concluded Premier League season, Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser were probably the two standout players at Bournemouth.

The duo formed quite the formidable attack, scoring and creating goals to keep the Cherries away from the relegation zone.

But as well as the England forward and Scottish winger, Jefferson Lerma also performed at a very high level and has since spoken about how pleased he is with how his first season in English football has gone.

“It’s very different to Colombia and Spain. English football is more direct. You always have the chance to come back, even if you’re losing 3-0 and everything is very evenly matched,” the 24-year-old was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.

“English is something I must learn gradually, but football’s language is universal. Through hard work and following the coach’s instructions, I feel I have done a great job this season, knowing very little English.”

When it has come to shielding Bournemouth’s defence and trying to get attacks going, a great job is exactly what Lerma has done. With his tackling and desire to win the ball back, the Colombian has protected his team-mates well before playing progressive passes.

At times, Lerma has looked a bit naive and overzealous with his challenges. But that is to be expected of a young defensive midfielder adapting to a new division. Other than that, the Colombia international has been close to perfect and looks as if he can go up another level next term.

وقال مدرب روما لشبكة “سكاي سبورت إيطاليا”: “بكل بساطة، لم نظهر ما يكفي من الشجاعة ولم نفعل أي شيء قريبًا بما يكفي لتحقيق نتيجة ضد نابولي”.

وأضاف: “لم نكن أفضل فريق في العالم قبل هذه المباراة ولسنا الأسوأ الآن، كل مباراة هي اختبار لهذا الفريق وليس فقط ضد أكبر الخصوم”.

Just a week after lifting the biggest prize in club football, Virgil van Dijk was one game away from capping off a remarkable season with a title at international level.

The centre-back lead his side past England in the Nations League semi-finals, but fell short to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the showpiece finale on Sunday.

Despite not being able to add another trophy to his collection, van Dijk can look back at the season with a real sense of pride. The former Southampton man was absolutely vital to Liverpool’s triumph in the Champions League, and was deservedly crowned PFA Player of the Year for his stellar performances this season.

With Jurgen Klopp’s men bidding to overhaul the Manchester City juggernaut and claim their first Premier League title, van Dijk will once again be counted on by Reds fans to marshal the Anfield side’s backline to glory.

Seen as such a cool customer, the Dutchman will no doubt shake off the setback with his country and kick on again with Liverpool next season – that will be a very scary prospect indeed.

Top scorer to La Liga

According to Cope Radio, Ayoze Perez is a transfer target for La Liga side Valencia. The Spaniard scored 12 Premier League goals last season, and appears to be excited about a switch to a Champions League side, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle will let him leave this summer.

Longstaff commits

Despite reported interest from Manchester United, Sean Longstaff has given Toon fans a boost by pledging his future to Newcastle. He is quoted by the Mirror as saying he is “100% committed” to the North East side and hopes to be back in the starting XI as soon as he is fully fit.

Mateta on radar

Newcastle have made a bid for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to Sunday’s print edition of L’Equipe via Sport Witness. The initial offer is believed to be around €20-25m (£17.8-£22.25m), but the German side are holding out for an offer of €35-40m (£31.16-£35.61m). Southampton are also reported to be interested.
