Per a report from the print edition of The Daily Mirror (July 2, page 49), Aston Villa are interested in Southampton defender Jack Stephens.

The report emerged just a day after the Villans brought one former Saints man to the club, landing left-back Matt Targett as they bolstered their defensive options.

Villa have already added Kortney Hause to their ranks on a permanent basis but it appears as though their fans are strongly against the idea of signing Stephens.

Taking to Twitter, a host of supporters revealed their displeasure. One individual called the 25-year-old hopeless whilst another said they’d rather they pursued Adam Webster or Gary Cahill.

The former is someone who has been engulfed in a transfer saga after Villa had a bid rejected. Bristol City initially wanted £30m for the player but it’s thought a compromise of £20m-£25m could be reached. Cahill, meanwhile, was linked back in May.

A further supporter reacted to the news surrounding Stephens by claiming it didn’t look as though the club knew what they were doing.

The Saints defender played 24 times in the Premier League last term, as well as making five outings in cup competitions.

It is believed that the Turin-based side feel that a £31m deal for Kean makes financial sense, whilst sporting director Fabio Paratici is said to have some concerns over the teenager’s character.

The negotiations between Juventus and Ajax over the signing of de Ligt seems to be taking ages to complete.

We all know how difficult the Dutchman’s agent, Mino Raiola, can be in these types of discussions, and the deal seems to be stalling over his personal demands as well as Juventus offering well below Ajax’s €75m (£67.4m) valuation.

In that respect, throwing the £31m-rated Kean in as a sweetener very easily could’ve got the deal done given his value and his young age, so Romano’s tweet stating that the Italian won’t be used as a makeweight will be music to Everton’s ears as their transfer target remains on the market.

By keeping him out of negotiations, the Merseysiders will still be able to obtain the player who appears to be their main striking target given the fact he is the only centre-forward they appear to have bid for – they should definitely be overjoyed to hear that he hasn’t been snatched away in the deal for de Ligt.

Arsenal are still seeking new players in what’s expected to be a “big week” in the transfer market for the Gunners, with moves for William Saliba and Dani Ceballos reportedly close to completion.

It’s clear the North Londoners are starting to pick up the pace in the transfer window and Edu’s arrival may have been the catalyst.

Despite being told to “be excited” for the remaining weeks of the window by none other than the owner’s son himself, Josh Kroenke, some fans are still left unimpressed by the lack of defensive incomings.

Arsenal have been linked with a whole host of attacking options, the most notable of targets being Wilfried Zaha, but this hasn’t stopped fans desiring reinforcements in defensive areas.

Klopp’s rebuild model

Those Arsenal fans are justifiably worried about the defence coming into the new season. Shkodran’s Mustafi is still at the club despite some woeful displays, captain Laurent Koscielny wants out and Rob Holding is nursing a long-term injury.

The lack of links to centre-backs should not be of great concern though, even though a deal to bring William Saliba from Saint-Etienne next summer looks all but agreed is he still only 18 years of age and won’t play a competitive match for the Gunners until August 2020 at the earliest as part of his expected loan return to the Ligue 1 outfit.

Jurgen Klopp developed his Liverpool side by starting with attacking additions and building his way backwards, with Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum making up 86% of the Reds’ spending in the German manager’s first summer transfer window. The summer after saw more emphasis on attacking signings with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohamed Salah arriving, and high-priced defensive reinforcements didn’t join until the windows after.

Arsenal, like Liverpool, want to play on the press under Emery, so making sure that having the right attacking players who embrace this and lead from the front is absolutely vital. Then, targeting defenders who can sweep up and tie up the loose ends will be the next logical step.

No-one can know for sure whether this is the transfer policy being undertaken by Emery and the Arsenal staff. However, with highly-rated Saliba set to arrive next summer, it does look as if the Gunners are following a similar model to that which brought Klopp’s men to the summit of European football. It might be frustrating for fans, but patience is certainly needed.

According to Soccer Link, via Get French Football News, Southampton have joined a host of clubs in the race to sign Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile, and he would be the addition that would leave manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in dreamland.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Soccer Link, via GFFN, report that Saints have made a formal enquiry for the highly-rated defender, who made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit last term despite only celebrating his 18th birthday in March.

GFFN have relaid information that the south coast outfit have joined Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United, who have made verbal offers of €30m (£27.4m) for the teenager, as well as La Liga trio Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and Valencia, in the chase for the young Frenchman’s signature.

The report adds that while Monaco director Oleg Petrov doesn’t want to lose Badiashile this summer, manager Leonardo Jardim is unable to guarantee him regular first-team football in 2019/20.

Just what Hasenhuttl ordered

It has been no secret that Southampton, who have looked good going forward but sometimes shaky at the back in pre-season, have been wanting to bring a new centre-back to St Mary’s before the transfer deadline next week.

According to Soccer Souls, the 6 foot 4 Badiashile is powerful, reads the game excellently and is a real ball-playing defender – backed up by the fact that he had a pass success rate of 89.5% in 20 Ligue 1 appearances last term, as per WhoScored.

Saints have been calling out for a quick and intelligent defender who can complement the likes of Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek at the back after 65 Premier League goals were conceded last term, and the 18-year-old appears to fit the bill.

His potential arrival could also be the one that finally allows Hasenhuttl to switch to the 4-2-2-2 formation that served him so well at RB Leipzig previously, seeing as he is still favouring a five-at-the-back system as shown by his selection for the first half against Feyenoord on Sunday.

Lots of Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that the Citizens are close to completing the signing of Scott Carson from Derby.

The back-to-back Premier League champions have decided to swoop for the 33-year-old stopper to provide cover for Ederson and Claudio Bravo.

You may be wondering why the Citizens have dipped into the Championship to sign an ageing stopper to provide cover, but it is assumed that the former England international is being signed to boost the homegrown quota – similar to Rob Green’s situation at Chelsea last season, in which he didn’t play a single minute.

Carson had been linked with Nottingham Forest, but now looks set for a remarkable move to Pep Guardiola’s Champions League hopefuls and quadruple winners – it looks set to be one of the most bizarre transfers of the window.
