SPCL2 – Academy within point of Division Two title

The Hampshire Academy are within one point of clinching the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 championship after a seven-wicket win over United Services at the Rose Bowl

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)25-Aug-2002The Hampshire Academy are within one point of clinching the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 championship after a seven-wicket win over United Services at the Rose Bowl. They will almost certainly be crowned champions when they visit Trojans at Stoneham Lane on Saturday.Second-placed Easton & Martyr Worthy whipped Rowledge by 72 runs, but dropped two valuable points in the process.Jimmy Adams (3-41) and Ian Hilsum (3-41) reduced US to 93-6 before John Mann (38) picked up late support from Paul Barsby (23) and Guy Lewis (26) to lift the visitors to 182-9.Iain Brunnschweiler (31) for the Academy youngsters away to a brisk start before departing, alongside Peter Hammond, at 43-2.But it was Alex Richardson’s well crafted 70 not out that won the day for the Young Hawks. Adams (22) made his mark before Martin Bushell (36 not out) joined Richardson to secure victory.Beaten National Village Championship semi-finalists Rowledge are in desperate trouble at the bottom after crashing to defeat against Easton. They reduced EMW to 23-4 before Steve Green’s magnificent 98 not out hoisted the visitors to 199-5.Mark Stone (4-16) and Matt Bolland (2-16) wrecked the Rowledge top order before Andy Birch (3-13) ended the late order resistance by Chris Yates (38). Rowledge, dismissed for 129, will have to score a 22-point maximum at Hungerford, if they are to stand any chance of survival.Hungerford made themselves safe with an easy seven-wicket win over ten-man Winchester KS (116), but Old Tauntonians & Romsey are not entirely clear of trouble after a 21-run defeat at Sparsholt.Rob Savage (74) and Kevin Foyle (35) lifted Sparsholt out of early trouble created by Jeremy Ord (3-31) and pushed the Winchester club to a healthy 197 all out.Ord hit 48 not out for OTR, but Ian Stuart’s spell of 4-37 left the visitors well behind the rate. They closed at 176-8 (Paul Longland 33).Aaron Heal, Lymington’s Western Australian Under-19 all-rounder, is launching a late challenge for the Premier Division 2 individual batting prize after scoring 111 against Trojans. The century took Heal’s run aggregate to 603 – 39 behind Charles Forward, the hard-hitting Old Tauntonians & Romsey left-hander.But Heal’s efforts were to no avail as Trojans snatched a one-wicket win in a thrilling rain-cut finish.Glyn Treagus (35) and Chris Warde (35 not out) gave Heal support as Lymington reached 225-7, a total trimmed to 216 after a two-over rain interruption.Mike Durand (59) steered Trojans to 97-1, but it was Jon Gillespie’s unbeaten 39 that got Trojans home by one wicket in a tense finish.

Exclusive: Steve Howey reckons Sunderland would attract Crooks

Joining Sunderland would attract Rotherham United midfielder Matt Crooks, according to Steve Howey.

The Millers midfielder offers a lot of versatility as he is comfortable playing both a defensive midfield role, as well as further forward. Last season he found the back of the net on seven occasions, as well as laying on three assists for his teammates.

Crooks is hot property this summer with a number of clubs interested in his signature. According to the Rotherham Advertiser, Rotherham want a seven-figure sum for their prized asset and despite a lot of interest in the player, Howey reckons Sunderland would be an attractive proposition for the 27-year-old.

“If there’s one thing that Sunderland have got going for them, fair enough, they might be paying fortunes, but they’ve got a magnificent stadium, fantastic fans and to play at the Stadium of Light in a packed house, which could be what it’s going to be, you know, that for me would certainly be a turn on, if you want to look at that”.

Facing another season in League One, Sunderland will be looking to get their recruitment spot-on this summer to help mount a serious promotion push, with Howey reckoning that if the Black Cats could get a couple of quality players through the door, it could be the start of something special.

“You know for a fact, you could be at the start of something which could be an amazing journey for someone to progress on if you just get a couple of quality players in”.

Canada win Red Stripe thriller

Canada today earned a second Red Stripe Bowl victory, this time over the Rest of the Leewards Islands, but only after a nail-biting 20 run last wicket partnership between Nick de Groot and Barry Seebaran

Dave Liverman22-Aug-2002Canada today earned a second Red Stripe Bowl victory, this time over the Rest of the Leewards Islands, but only after a nail-biting 20 run last wicket partnership between Nick de Groot and Barry Seebaran. The Canadians almost threw away the chance of victory that had bee gained through hard work in the field with some adventurous but perhaps unwise batting by the upper order. In front of a small crowd, the Leewards chose to bat after winning the toss, but were in immediate trouble against the Canadian pacers. Watt was caught by Seebaran off Joseph with the score on 17, and his opening partner Crafton followed, lbw to Codrington two runs later. Harris and Eugene built a partnership of some promise until Eugene was stunningly caught by Davison at short extra, diving to snap up a hard drive inches above the ground. Joe Harris changed his bowlers intelligently and the spinners Davison and Seebaran both bowled well, not afraid to challenge the batsmen by flighting the ball. Seebaran reaped immediate reward for this tactic when Harris skied a drive to Billcliff. Nick de Groot also bowled well, yorking top-scorer Sylvester for 34, and Joseph came back to mop up the tail. Joseph took 3/32, and his figures would have been even better if he could have controlled a few wayward leg-side deliveries. The two spinners bowled 20 overs for 47 runs and three wickets, and de Groot finished with 2/26. The Leewards certainly did not field a powerful batting line-up, but this was another strong performance by Canada in the field, with Bagai again impressive behind the stumps. The Beausejour wicket has not yielded many high totals, and definitely offers bowlers considerable assistance. The Canadians tried a change of tactics when faced with the comparatively small target of 139, and came out with all guns firing. The opening two overs were almost non-stop action, featuring 2 sixes, 2 fours and two wickets. Ishwar Maraj cut a lovely four in the first over, then played on to Thomas. John Davison, elevated in the order as a pinch hitter, hit his first ball for four, his second for six over extra cover, and was bowled off his third as he advanced down the wicket and missed a slower deivery. Fazil Sattaur also got into the action with a hooked six off his second ball, and with Joe Harris stroking a couple of boundaries the score had reached 35/2 after just four overs. Sattaur tried another big shot and skied a high catch, and then Ian Billcliff, playing his first match in the series edged a catch to the keeper. Four wickets had gone down for just 43 runs, and some stability was desperately required. Bagai provided this, playing carefully and letting Harris continue the attack from the other end. Joe Harris was looking untroubled by the bowling until he attempted to pull a long-hop from Shillingford over the longest boundary on the ground, only to be well caught by George as he slipped and fell. At 70/5 the match was in the balance. Nick de Groot fully justified his place down the order with some eminently sensible batting, and he and Bagai took the total past 100. Bagai had played a couple of classy cover drives before he was very well caught by keeper Phillips diving far to his right. The balance of the match switched completely as Samad fell to Thomas for just a single, Codrington was bowled by Shillingford for a duck, and Joseph soon followed. Canada still needed 20 more runs with only Barry Seebaran to accompany de Groot. Thomas, by far the Leewards best bowler (5/33) had finished his 10 overs, and so Lewis had to turn to his 5th bowler the medium pacer Sylvester. With the tension mounting, de Groot hit two boundaries off Slyvester, and with Seebaran batting sensibly, Canada squeaked past the target with 9 overs remaining.Canada will be pleased with another win, but were perhaps fortunate that their batting tactics did not back-fire. A quick win certainly would have helped their net run rate, which may yet come into play in deciding the semi-finalists, but they were rather closer to losing a match they should have won easily than they would have liked. They face Trinidad and Tobago in their final match with a place in the semi-finals on the line, and will have to bat much better to stand a chance of an upset.

Howey shocked Andy Carroll released by Newcastle - Exclusive

Steve Howey was surprised that Andy Carroll hasn’t been offered fresh terms by Newcastle and felt he was unused by Steve Bruce last season.

The Magpies boss confirmed the 32-year-old is now looking for a new club following the expiration of his contract last month, which comes after there appeared a possibility that he would extend his second stay at St James’ Park.

However, Bruce ended those claims by calling Carroll’s Newcastle exit “amicable”.

He re-joined from West Ham two years ago, but scored just once in 43 appearances in all competitions and was hardly used by Bruce during his second campaign back in the north East.

Carroll started just four Premier League matches and made a handful of brief late substitute outings during the final four months of the season.

Those cameos were added up to just 20 minutes from February onwards, and Howey expressed his frustration over Carroll’s treatment.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“I’m surprised because I felt as though he was available a lot more than I thought he would be and wasn’t used. I’m not sure what the lad can do if he’s given very few minutes on the park. I’d have used him a bit more.”

Drakes: Joke Charge

KINGSTON – Vasbert Drakes has described a fine leveled at him for using indecent language as "nonsense" and plans to make a formal appeal to have his name cleared

Haydn Gill28-Aug-2002KINGSTON – Vasbert Drakes has described a fine leveled at him for using indecent language as "nonsense" and plans to make a formal appeal to have his name cleared.Match referee Johnny Gayle, a former Test umpire, says however, the code of conduct he referred to mentions there shall be no right to appeal. The 32-year-old Drakes, a seasoned overseas professional who is representing Barbados for the first time since 1998, was fined half his match fee after attending a hearing following the conclusion of the Red Stripe Bowl cricket match between Barbados and Jamaica at Sabina Park last Saturday.According to Gayle, Drakes breached two clauses of the code of conduct by bringing the game into disrepute by his behaviour and using abusive language to the umpire. In response, an upset Drakes said there was no "solid evidence" against him."I am going to defend myself. If it needs to be taken further, I will. It is nonsense," Drakes told NATIONSPORT from the team’s Knutsford Court hotel yesterday.`No solid evidence’"I went into a meeting and explained myself and it was decided, without having any sort of solid evidence of what happened, to impose a fine on me. Whatever the umpire said and whatever I said, no one heard."The incident in question was alleged to have occurred in the dying stages of the match when Drakes was batting with Barbados chasing an imposing target of 308 in 47 overs.Satisfied that the quality of the ball had deteriorated, Drakes asked umpire Cecil Fletcher if it could be changed.Pressed for comment on the matter, Fletcher said because he didn’t change the ball, he was met with indecent remarks from Drakes."I immediately reported the matter to the next captain and to my fellow umpire. I told him [Vasbert] I was going to report it when we go off the field," Fletcher said. After Fletcher’s report, Drakes was summoned to a hearing that was attended by himself, umpires Fletcher and Maurice Chung, match referee Gayle and Barbados manager Tony Howard."What the umpire wrote on a piece of paper was not what I said. You are basically taking one man’s word without having any evidence," Drakes said."I will appeal. This is the first code of conduct that I see a player doesn’t have a right to appeal. How can you have no grounds for appealing?"Gayle, an experienced match referee who umpired in Tests and One-Day Internationals in the 1980s, said the level of the punishment was justified."Using indecent language is not a thing to be taken lightly," Gayle said. "He [Drakes] did say he would appeal, but the code of conduct I have mentions there shall be no appeal."All-rounder Drakes had smashed a quick-fire 26 off 15 balls before he was caught at deep wicket off off-spinner Ricardo Powell with Barbados still requiring another 30 runs in a little more than two overs. As it turned out, Barbados lost by 20 runs in their only defeat of the preliminaries. In giving reasons why he opted not to change the ball, umpire Fletcher said the issue was beyond his control."The whole problem of balls is not one that umpires can deal with," he said. "You just cannot find suitable replacements for white balls. After about ten overs, all of them get discoloured."When Jamaica batted, however, the ball was changed mid-way into the innings. Barbados had asked for one of a similar wear and tear, but a new ball was brought out and it was rubbed into the turf before use.Drakes is also questioning whether his captain, Courtney Browne, should have been present at the hearing."You cannot have rules for one person and don’t have them for the other. We don’t do things the right way," he added.

Tottenham Hotspur: Toby Alderweireld on verge of exit

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is set to sign for Qatari side Al-Duhail, according to a recent report from The Telegraph.

The lowdown: ‘Phenomenal player’

Alderweireld has been with Spurs since 2015, and has made 236 appearances in total for the club, but it seems as though he could be heading for the exit door in the near future.

The Belgium international featured for his national side in the European Championships, and his return to Spurs is set to be a brief one.

Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs was set to expire in the summer of 2023, but it doesn’t seem as though he’ll see out that deal with the Premier League side.

Former Leeds United man Noel Whelan previously branded Alderweireld a ‘phenomenal’ player at the club, in an interview with Football Insider last season in December 2020.

“Alderweireld is the best defender at that club. He’s a phenomenal player and it’s great to see him playing so well again.”

The latest: Deal agreed – Personal terms to be finalised

The Telegraph revealed on Saturday morning that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with Al-Duhail for the sale of Alderweireld.

It is claimed that personal terms still need to be agreed, with the defender’s move also dependent on whether he passes a medical with the Qatari-based side.

The Lilywhites will receive £13m.

The verdict: The ideal time for Alderweireld to depart

It’s certainly a surprising choice of destination for his next club, but we feel the time is right for both parties to move on.

He’s been a fantastic servant to Spurs over the years, and his experience and leadership could leave a sizeable void in their defence moving forwards.

But with younger defensive reinforcements set to arrive this summer, it makes sense for Alderweireld to leave the club this summer in favour of a new adventure.

He’s a tough player to replace – Whelan even claimed he is the best defender at the club – but if the incoming new additions can adjust to their new surroundings relatively quickly then £13m for an ageing defender could look like excellent business.
