MRF Indian players in Australia Institute squad

Two Indian players will represent an Australian Institute of Sport team in the fourth year of the Emerging Players Tournament

Cricinfo staff08-Jul-2008Two Indian players will represent an Australian Institute of Sport team in the fourth year of the Emerging Players Tournament which begins on July 14 in Queensland. Varun Aaron and Shrikant Bhaskar Wagh, of the MRF Pace Foundation, will combine with 13 Australian players, some of whom have first-class experience.Skand Dinesh Vohra, a left-arm fast bowler from Mumbai, was originally included in the side before being replaced by Wagh. A Cricket Australia spokesperson said: “The MRF Pace Academy have recently informed us that Shrikant Wagh and Varun Aaron will be the two players from the MRF Pace Foundation and that Skand Dinesh Vohra is a late withdrawal.”While Australia’s seniors continue to win, the next layer has not yet won this tournament in four years. AIS team coach Brian McFadyen thinks change is around the corner. “I’m very happy with the quality of this year’s team,” he said. “The full-time AIS scholars have prepared brilliantly during the initial 12 weeks of the program at the Centre of Excellence which has helped their physical development and skill progression.”With the talented list of players we have and the inclusion of the two Indian players from the MRF Pace Foundation we are expecting to see an exciting brand of cricket from this group. We are really looking forward to putting all the hard work of the last couple of months in to practice with the focus firmly set on tasting success in this tournament which has proved elusive since its inception in 2005.”A Twenty20 kicks off the tournament then another provides a hit of relief just before finals day. Each side will play six one-dayers ahead of finals.India have chosen their National Academy Team to replace a Karnataka State Cricket Association XI, who had played for the first three years, winning it in the first year. South Africa, who have been victorious for the last two years, will send a side along with New Zealand.AIS squad Liam Davis, Theo Doropoulos, Peter Forrest, Moises Henriques, Michael Hill, Jon Holland, Usman Khawaja, Greg Moller, Dominic O’Brien, Steve O’Keefe, Grant Sullivan, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Aaron Varun, Shrikant Bhaskar Wagh.

Everton interested in Josip Brekalo

Everton head into their opening Premier League clash next week in a bit of a sticky situation.

They were ruthlessly beaten 4-0 by Manchester United in pre-season on Saturday so the Toffees will need to significantly improve.

However, with Rafa Benitez spending rather meagre sums so far, it’s been a rather anticlimactic summer to date.

On the chalkboard

Everton have looked to strengthen their options on the wing heading into the new season.

They’ve added Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend to their ranks but you sense they still need a signing of fairly high calibre in that region of the pitch.

Leon Bailey was linked with a move to Goodison Park but ultimately joined Aston Villa instead.

Everton signed James Rodriguez last summer but they lack quality and depth beyond that. Alex Iwobi is the prime example.

Signed for a whopping £34m, he’s scored just four goals since moving to Merseyside and such was his lack of end product that Carlo Ancelotti started fielding him at wing-back.

The solution

One answer to Benitez’s problems could be Josip Brekalo.

The Wolfsburg gem was touted with a move to Goodison Park a few months ago but it looks as though they still have a keen eye on the 23-year-old wide man.

That’s according to Transfer Market Web who suggest a bargain fee of €15m (£12.7m) will be enough to sign him. However, they will need to fend off interest from a number of other clubs including Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

If they secure his signature then he’d represent a huge upgrade on Iwobi.

For starters, he scored more goals this season than the Everton winger has managed in his entire Everton career to date.

Brekalo found the net on seven occasions last term, taking his tally in Wolfsburg colours to 21 overall.

He also added three assists as he earned his place in Croatia’s squad for Euro 2020.

Not only does Brekalo have end product – something that Iwobi lacks – but he’s also incredibly progressive with the ball.

Described as a player who can “torment defenders everywhere” by journalist Ronan Murphy, he ranks in the 75th percentile for total carrying distance of the ball across Europe’s top five leagues.

Iwobi ranks higher in that department but without goals and assists, it rather counts for nothing.

Dismally, the Nigerian ranks in the 29th percentile for shot-creating actions while Brekalo ranks in the 67th percentile.

As a result, it’s evident why the young attacker would be such an upgrade on Iwobi.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Cheick Doucouré transfer update

Aston Villa are said to be in talks with RC Lens midfielder Cheick Doucouré as their summer recruitment drive intensifies, according to Goal.com [via Birmingham Live].

The Mali midfielder enjoyed a commendable 2020/21 campaign as he registered five goal contributions in 35 appearances, with four goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

He could now be set for a move to England following recent reports. The Villains are believed to have commenced discussions over a possible deal, with Lens holding out for around €15m (£12.7m) before considering selling one of their prize assets [Goal.com, via Birmingham Live].

Dean Smith has already sanctioned deals for five players in the form of Axel Tuanzebe, Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young and Danny Ings in this transfer window [Transfermarkt].

In light of recent developments about Doucouré, plenty of Aston Villa diehards took to Twitter to discuss the update on the 21-year-old, who won more tackles per game last season (2.6) than anyone in Smith’s squad, which suggests that he could add plenty of steel to the Villans’ midfield.

Estamos sempre prontos a melhorar. Isso significa melhorar nossa performance. Ainda temos a evoluir – ponderou.

Saleem Altaf reinstated temporarily

Saleem Altaf, the PCB official who was sacked two weeks ago, has been reinstated to his position on the basis of an order from the Lahore High Court

Cricinfo staff25-Jun-2008Saleem Altaf, the PCB official who was sacked two weeks ago, has been reinstatedto his position on the basis of an order from the Lahore High Court. The ruling, however, is a temporary one pending a final resolution to the writ Altaf’s lawyers have filed.”Saleem Altaf’s petition was heard today and in an interim order he has been reinstated. He has now reverted back to his position as of June 12, 2008,” Altaf’s lawyer Aftab Gul told Cricinfo. Gul, a former Test cricketer himself, said that Altaf was now free to go back to his offices from tomorrow. “It is up to Altaf whether he chooses to go back from then.”Altaf, director special projects at the time, was reportedly sacked for allegedly leaking sensitive information to the press, a charge he has strenuously denied. The board had allegedly recorded a number of conversations he had with journalists during his time as director special projects, which were played back to him before his services were terminated.Altaf filed a writ petition in the High Court for malafide dismissal. The matter was heard in court today and in the afternoon, the judge decided to suspend the order of termination until the petition has been heard out.The Pakistan board publicly refused to talk about the matter though in last Saturday’s governing board meeting, where members decided to back the decision to relieve Altaf of his duties. The date for the next hearing has not been decided yet.

Wolves: Fans react to Sergio Oliveira link

Wolverhampton Wanderers could look to sign FC Porto midfielder Sergio Oliveira, according to Jornal de Noticias.

The report says that Bruno Lage is a fan of Oliveira and that Wolves have made €20m (£17m) available to pursue the signing.

Recapping Wolves’ summer

Wolves, who opened the season with a 1-0 defeat away to Leicester City on Saturday, have spent £23.67m on new players so far this summer. The window is open until 11pm on 31 August.

Left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has joined permanently from Ligue 1 outfit Angers, while Jose Sa has come in to replace Rui Patricio after his move to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma. Elsewhere, Colombian youngster Yerson Mosquera has arrived to bolster Wolves’ defensive ranks, and winger Francisco Trincao has swapped the Camp Nou for Molineux.

Lage’s options in the middle of the park currently consist of Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker, Bruno Jordao, Morgan Gibbs-White and Owen Otasowie.

Oliveira enjoyed a tremendous 2020/21 season with FC Porto, scoring 20 goals and setting up another seven in all competitions. By way of comparison, Wolves’ four leading scorers managed 18 goals between them.

There's a lot of resilience in this team – Kumble

Anil Kumble is a man of few words when it comes to addressing the media before, during and after a match but his crisp verdict that India need to win in Galle at any cost was the most forthright he’s been this series

Anil Kumble is a man of few words when it comes to addressing the media before, during and after a match but his crisp verdict that India needed to win in Galle at any cost was the most forthright he’s been this series. The last time India trailed a three-match series 0-1 was against Sri Lanka in 2001-02 and this Test could prove to be the most important in recent history, given that a loss here could seriously throw up composition concerns going forward into a busy season.”One down is one down, whether you’re in Australia or Sri Lanka, so it’s a matter of regrouping,” said Kumble. “We’ve done that and spent quality time discussing issues on and off the field, seeing how we can cope and come back. We’ve done that in the past with the same set of players and there is definitely a lot of experience and resilience in this team.”We will fall back on that resilience and I’m sure we will be able to put up a better show and get the right result here. We need to win this Test match. That’s the approach we are taking.”India clearly underperformed at the SSC but before questions started to fly around about who was at fault, Kumble pointed out it was a collective failure. “If you look at the team, overall we didn’t play to our potential,” he said. “It is wrong to point fingers at one batsman or one player. Whatever confidence I can give as a captain and team member, I’ve done that. It is not just the batting line-up. It’s all the members of this team. We are all disappointed at what happened in the last game and we’re looking forward to this challenge.”Perhaps aware that the only sides to beat Sri Lanka in Galle did so because of massive totals, Kumble stressed on batting well. “We will definitely approach this Test in a very positive way. The series is still alive and we’d like to go out and get as many runs as possible. We need a good score and have quality spinners as well to ensure we come into the game,” he said. “It is a good surface for the fast bowlers as well. There will be a bit of swing because of the conditions here. But I’m sure the spinners will definitely come into play.”Coming to Sri Lanka and winning was never going to be easy, said Kumble, but the signs shown in the past four days led him to believe they were hungry to prove they could win. He also said he had no plans to change the batting order, as he had complete faith in the names on the team sheet.India’s combination for this Test will remain “more or less the same as before” and nothing in India’s practice session suggested a change either. The mood was upbeat, with Gary Kirsten, the coach, sharing laughs with India’s batsmen as he handed out catching practice. Venkatesh Prasad was stoic as he monitored the bowlers but there was nothing out of the ordinary at that end of the ground. Zaheer Khan’s departure from practice early was not a matter of concern, said Kumble, as it was team policy to allow a player to leave once he felt satisfied. After losing the toss in Colombo, how crucial would it be here in Galle? “Toss and weather is not something we like to concentrate on,” Kumble said. “Whether we bat or bowl first we need to do a good job – bat well, land the ball in the right areas, take our catches. In the subcontinent the toss plays a crucial role but we can’t worry about it too much.”Last December, when England played Sri Lanka in Galle’s comeback Test, Kevin Pietersen was flipping through the channels one evening when he came upon highlights of The Oval Test in 1998 when Muttiah Muralitharan famously wrecked England’s batting line-up. On the eve of the Test, Pietersen noted how much England’s approach to Murali had improved since then. After being bowled out for 81 in their first innings, England creditably rallied to 251 before rain forced a draw. England’s batsmen allowed Murali only four wickets in that Test, and so Pietersen’s observations were correct in a way.India will hope that their batsmen have improved since they last played Sri Lanka in Galle in 2001 – and that will be a true test of the resilience Kumble speaks of.
