Tri-series plans still in the air

Negotiations are still underway for a tri-series tournament in South Africa, involving Pakistan and potentially Sri Lanka, as Pakistan continues to find ways to fill a depleted international calendar

Negotiations are still underway for a tri-series tournament in South Africa, involving Pakistan and potentially Sri Lanka, as Pakistan continues to find ways to fill a depleted international calendar.Though talk of the series has been rife since the Champions Trophy – originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan from September 12 – was finally postponed at the end of last month, progress in bringing it about has been slow. The PCB’s international cricket committee met today to review the situation arising from the postponement and discussed several options for Pakistan. Time, though, is against Pakistan as realistically, most teams have international commitments from October 1 and any commitment has to be arranged before then. The committee discussed the South Africa tri-series proposal as well as alternatives within and outside Pakistan.”They [Cricket South Africa] are still looking at various commercial options and opportunities for the series,” Shafqat Naghmi, chief operating officer, told Cricinfo. “The situation will be clearer once the commercial viability of the proposal is assessed.”It is believed that the PCB, eager for the series to go ahead, has offered to help CSA in trying to attract a broadcaster as well as sponsors. As of now, however, no dates are confirmed and neither is the availability of Sri Lanka just yet.The Champions Trophy postponement left Pakistan with their second big gap in the year, after Australia refused to tour in March-April, also due to security concerns. Board officials are privately concerned at the lack of matches in Pakistan, not just because of the effect it has on the development of the side, but also the financial pressures.Though neither the Australia tour nor the Champions Trophy have been written off as losses, some estimates suggest the PCB was looking to earn US$7 million from each series. “It isn’t just that this team needs to play to learn more and develop. Financially it is very important that we just play,” one official present at the meeting today told Cricinfo.Pakistan will not play a single Test this year and have played most of their ODIs against weaker teams such as Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Members of the current administration have long been unhappy with their predecessors, who, under Shaharyar Khan’s tenure, negotiated such a lopsided Future Tours Programme (FTP) last time round. “We were left with very few commitments for this year and that is something we must address when the next FTP cycle is finalised,” the official said.Naghmi will now meet the governing board during the second week of September for approval of any potential assignments.

West Ham United: Fans react to Philip Beard interview

Many West Ham United fans have been expressing their anger on Twitter, following an interview on TalkSPORT with PAI Capital consortium leader Philip Beard.

Of course, the former QPR chairman is currently embroiled in a battle to acquire the club from current owners David Gold and David Sullivan [TalkSPORT].

They have also sought successful backing from former West Ham icons, with the likes of Rio and Anton Ferdinand backing the potential transition of the historic footballing entity into new hands.

The organisation have copped their fair share of criticism in recent times, not least from ex-Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, who was part of the interviewing panel on the radio station.

He stated that Beard and his colleagues were ‘playing to the gallery’ with regards to their communication surrounding their bid to buy controlling stakes in the club.

Despite this, Beard offered some encouragement on the transfer front, as reported by The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas on Twitter, stating: “If we do complete a deal we will have the funds to invest in players.”

Nevertheless, loads of unconvinced West Ham United fans took to Twitter to discuss these claims.

West Ham United fans react:

Replying to well-respected journalist Thomas on Twitter, here is what some fans had to say about the interview:

“What funds? Where is the money coming from? Who is the main financial backer? Is the investment on the pitch going to be a regular activity or is it just to sweeten the fans whilst they cash in on events? Alot of questions asked, none officially answered.”

-Estou pensando no jogo do Santos. A ideia é me preparar para o próximo compromisso, ir bem e me apresentar à Seleção com o dever cumprido.

– Nota? 1 a 0.

Celtic: Anthony Joseph’s double transfer boost

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has provided two positive updates on Celtic’s pursuit of striker Georgios Giakoumakis and defender Liam Scales.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou wants three more?

Even though Celtic have already spent over £17m on eight first-team additions his summer, it seems as if they could make more over the next seven days.

The Daily Record stated on Sunday night that Postecoglou would like a centre-back on loan, a versatile midfielder and a forward, should Odsonne Edouard leave.

That forward could well be Giakoumakis, who has reportedly approached Celtic after talks with Werder Bremen, and it seems as if a move to Parkhead is gathering pace.

The Latest: Joseph’s posts

Joseph took to Twitter to provide an update on Giakoumakis, revealing that Werder Bremen are looking at other options after struggling to finance a deal.

VVV-Venlo’s talks with Celtic for the forward are progressing well, with the Dutch side wanting a 15% sell-on clause included.

Joseph then replied to a fan who asked him about Scales, admitting he doesn’t expect any issues in regards to a transfer going through.

The Verdict: Good news

Centre-back Scales and Giakoumakis, an out and out centre-forward, could go a long way in Postecoglou’s requests of a centre-back, versatile midfielder and forward before the end of the month.

McKay may well make the pair the club’s ninth and tenth Celtic additions relatively soon, which could leave him with an Edouard exit to sort out and a versatile midfielder late in the window.

The quicker those deals can get over the line the better, though, as you’d expect the club wouldn’t want to leave too much business for the final hours.

Keedy ends Somerset's chance

Andrew McGlashan reports on the third day of the Championship clash between Somerset and Lancashire at Taunton

Somerset haven’t played like prospective County Champions over the last three days and could finish as a low as fourth when everything is tied up tomorrow. Gary Keedy took a season-best 5 for 56 to dismiss them for 227 in their second innings, leaving Lancashire 182 to win. Mark Chilton and Paul Horton knocked off 122 with ease by the close against a dispirited home side.Durham’s progress against Kent means even if Somerset had been able to pull off a win here it wouldn’t have been enough for a first title. And it wouldn’t have been a great advert for the Championship – regardless of all the wet weather – if the victors had ended with just four wins. It was their batting which let them down for a second time in this match, although Keedy needs credit for the way he exploited a pitch that started to offer him some assistance. It left Lancashire needing 182 to finish with back-to-back wins and give their Championship standing a much healthier look. Chilton and Horton had few alarms as Somerset’s lingering energy was finally sapped. Lancashire’s progress in their chase was slightly deceptive. Batting was hard work throughout the match, but not since the first couple of sessions has it been a lottery, yet no batsman has produced a major innings.Lancashire’s bowlers performed impressively to remove Somerset for a second time. It has been the quicks who have done most of the damage up to today, but in Keedy, Lancashire had the most potent spin option in the match and he was in action within the first hour. He finished with his first five-wicket haul since April 2007, but this hasn’t been the easiest of summers for fingers spinners and he went almost a month at one stage without bowling a ball in anger.Glen Chapple made the first breakthrough when he trapped James Hildreth with an inswinger, but shortly after Keedy was introduced he found Zander de Bruyn’s outside edge with one that turned. Suddenly, with the score barely moving and two further wickets down Somerset were under severe pressure.Peter Trego, the first-innings hero, was required to perform another rescue mission, but his attempt to break the shackles against Keedy cost him his wicket. He came down the pitch and tried to hit over mid-on, but the ball turned and he lofted it to mid-off, where Newby held well-judged catch moving backwards.Ian Blackwell was the last major batsman left and played sensibly to try and halt the slide. He whipped an effortless boundary through midwicket off Tom Smith and thumped a handsome straight drive against Keedy, but spin was tough to score off against as Keedy conceded one-an-over before lunch. The balance was just starting to shift again as he and Craig Kieswetter added 71 for the sixth wicket before Kieswetter missed a leg-side whip and was given lbw.Blackwell passed 1000 Championship runs for the season and went to fifty off 92 balls, but gave it away moments later with a lazy waft outside off stump. With him went Somerset’s last real chance. It gave Newby his third scalp of the innings, his seventh of an impressive game, and his best match return. Like Lancashire, he has peaked in the final few weeks of the season to justify the club’s youth push.Caddick then backed up his words to the top order by sticking around for 41 balls over 7 until he was given lbw – to his clear displeasure. Charl Willoughby, a true No. 11, clubbed a six off Keedy to bring huge cheers from the local supporters before Thomas gave Keedy his fifth by reverse sweeping to point.Somerset’s last chance was early wickets, and Caddick has performed such heroics before, but he has been singularly unimpressed with recent events at the club. Chilton and Horton survived the new-ball burst and were soon picking off boundaries with ease. Blackwell is no Keedy when it comes to left-arm spin and he regularly dropped short to be cut away. For a while it looked like Lancashire would be in a position to finish the match a day early, but opted to take their time. For Somerset, it’s all a massive anticlimax.

Bengal aim to recoup from Ahmedabad reverse

Cricinfo previews the clash between the Dhaka Warriors and the Royal Bengal Tigers

Big PictureIt’s the battle of Bengal. Royal Bengal Tigers, from Kolkata, started the ICL’s second season with a bang, winning three games on the trot, but suffered a ten-wicket mauling at the hands of the Ahmedabad Rockets in their previous game. Not very far from Kolkata is Dhaka, and the Warriors would be looking to continue from their win over the Delhi Giants, having lost their first two games.Bengal have relied heavily on their overseas stars so far in the tournament. The batting has largely revolved around New Zealanders Hamish Marshall and Craig McMillan, their captain, while Sri Lankan legspinner Upul Chandana has been their strike bowler. After an impressive start, however, matters fell apart for against Ahmedabad. As a positive, McMillan might think his team have got that one bad game behind them.Dhaka’s batting, apart from a sparkling hundred by Alok Kapali, was disappointing in their first two games. They managed to fire in unison against Delhi, rattling up a total of 174 – the best so far this season. On the bowling front, it’s the two left-arm spinners, Mohammad Rafique and Mosharraf Hossain, who have kept the opposition batsmen in check. However, the medium-pacers have been unable to tie down the runs; there have also been reports that the ICL have approached other players to further boost the Dhaka roster.Players to watchLance Klusener has gone about his job quietly in the tournament, with nothing spectacular yet, but one man is all praise. “He is as fit as a fiddle and is playing as good cricket as I have seen him play,” Darryl Cullinan, his former South African team-mate and now coach at Bengal, wrote in the . “He ran a brilliant bleep test — an athletic test during which a players runs continuous shuttles between two markers 20m apart. The time allowed between each shuttle becomes progressively shorter. It is murderous and designed to bring you to your knees. At the age of 37 Klusener got to a brilliant level 13. I wonder how many of our national players achieve this?”Nazimuddin’s 54 set up Dhaka’s win over Delhi, and more of the same would be expected of him against Bengal. Opening the innings, he could again set his Dhaka up with the right momentum. In his first international tournament for Bangladesh, he had made a 50-ball 81 against a Pakistan attack that included Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Akhtar.Habibul Bashar has scored 33 runs in three innings so far, at a not-so-impressive strike-rate of 94.28. Surely, something better is needed to lead from the front. With the overseas players stealing the show so far, the time is right for the likes of Rohan Gavaskar to step up. He hit 30 off 12 balls against the Mumbai Champs – it proved to be crucial later – but maybe a promotion up the order is needed.Quotes”I am satisfied with my captain [Craig McMillan] and coach [Daryll Cullinan]. I hope they carry on their form till the very end.”
“I am looking to him to produce some vintage Klusener stuff and further convince me that South Afria could do with him to plug a hole or two in their limited-overs squads.”
Cullinan can’t get enough of Klusener
