On a warm day in Karachi, when Test cricket returned to Pakistan after 16 months, the Sri Lankan top order indulged themselves to reach a strong position by the end of the opening day. Mahela Jayawardene presented a visual treat, Thilan Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara accumulated steadily, and Malinda Warnapura thrilled with a breezy knock as the visitors cashed in after winning the toss on a perfect batting pitch. There is something extremely graceful about Jayawardene’s batting. Perhaps, it’s the economy of movement, his ease, and the languid flow of his bat’s movement that catches the eye. There was a delicious straight drive on the up off Umar Gul today that captured his innings in a nutshell. The ball landed short of a length outside the off stump. Sachin Tendulkar, or even Sangakkara, imparts velocity to such deliveries with a fierce thump at the point of impact, whereas Virender Sehwag would rely on tremendous bat speed. Jayawardene seems to just caress his shots. Today, he waved his bat forward to meet the ball with the middle and it sped away. Just like that. And he did it repeatedly through his innings to compile his first Test hundred against Pakistan, the only country missing from his list of centuries.Jayawardene was reprieved on 43 and 123 off the debutant Sohail Khan. On both occasions he played away from his body but Misbah-ul-Haq, who held three sharp catches including a diving effort to dismiss Warnapura, spilled the first and Shoaib Malik dropped the second. Those two errors apart, Jayawardene was compact in defence. He might have struggled in recent ODIs but he has revelled in Tests, averaging over 55 in the last 12 months.Jayawardene’s innings built on the platform laid by Sangakkara, who played an assured innings after coming in to face the fifth ball of the day after the debutant Tharanga Paranavitana was out for a first-ball duck. Sangakkara utilised every run-scoring opportunity, playing an upper cut against Sohail Khan, a punchy drive on one knee off Yasir Arafat, and a straight drive against Gul. He even lofted Danish Kaneria over the infield but holed out to midwicket while trying to repeat the shot.Sangakkara’s wicket was a vital moment for Kaneria. He began to test the batsmen – Thilan Samaraweera in particular – with series of legbreaks, occasional googlies, and the odd slider delivered from the front of the hand. Samaraweera, however, was up to the task and grew in confidence, producing a whippy on-drive against Kaneria and another drive through cover off Arafat. As Samaraweera grew in composure, Kaneria started losing his and began to deliver a boundary ball every over.Kaneria changed tack in the last session, going round the stumps in an effort to frustrate the batsmen. It nearly worked as Samaraweera skied a slog-sweep and then edged between the wicketkeeper and a wide first slip. Samaraweera, nicknamed Mr Glue for a Test strike-rate of 43.96, put those lapses past him and began playing straight again. The pitch and the match situation demanded he raise his game and he did so, allowing Jayawardene to drop anchor. He reached his hundred with a lofted stroke over mid-off against Shoaib Malik.Among the Pakistan seamers, Arafat stood out for his consistently tight line and length. He repeatedly got the new ball to cut in and also to hold its line and combination almost worked. In the first session, he hit Sangakkara’s back leg with a delivery that cut from leg stump towards off but the appeal was turned down by the umpire. Sangakkara, on 43 then, was lucky to get away. Arafat also found reverse-swing with the older ball, though his lack of pace made it hard to breach the batsman’s defences.Gul and Sohail were guilty of erring in length. They overused the tactic of peppering Warnapura with bouncers initially and then tried to compensate by pitching too full. Warnapura took advantage, and kept driving them to set up Sri Lanka’s innings.Despite the run-fest, Younis Khan set attacking fields through the day, conceding plenty of runs in the vacant third-man region. The two slips for Danish Kaneria seemed a luxury at times but you could sense he wanted to be aggressive on the first day of his captaincy. He perhaps took the conventional means of attack to an extreme and the ploy failed to work.

Tom Moody will not be on the short-list for the England coaching position when submissions close on Friday, after he turned down an approach from the head-hunting firm appointed by the ECB.Moody, the former Sri Lanka and current Western Australia coach, was asked to apply for Peter Moores’ former post by Odgers Ray & Berndtson – the recruitment firm contracted by the ECB to conduct the search – but declined to pursue the matter.”I’ve been contacted by the head-hunters,” Moody said. “I’m not making an application for the job. The head-hunters have to produce a list and I’m not going to be on it.”Simon Cummins, Odger’s head of international sports practice, confirmed submissions for the England coaching position would close on Friday, but declined to divulge the names of candidates or how many were on the list.”Part of our confidentiality arrangement with clients is that we don’t talk about an active assignment,” Cummins said. “The process from here is that we will be drawing a list together with the ECB, then putting [candidates] through an interview and then making a recommendation to the ECB.”Moody stood down as Sri Lanka coach after two successful years, culminating in their appearance in the World Cup final in April 2007. He had been one of the prime candidates to succeed England’s former coach, Duncan Fletcher, but, with a young family to consider, he chose instead to relocate to his home-town of Perth.Had he successfully applied for the England job, Moody could have expected to double his current income, which is in the region of £100,000 per year from Western Australia, and a further £115,000 with the IPL franchise in Mohali. But ultimately job satisfaction is more important to him.”I’m very happy here in Perth,” he said back in January. “[The] family is settled, I’ve got a great job, enjoying what I’m doing. I’ve got no reason to be looking further afield.”

Moore must now axe Sheff Weds forward

So far this season, Sheffield Wednesday have endured a rather mixed start to their League One campaign, winning four, drawing three and losing three of their opening ten league games with 15 points under their belt.

Their previous league game saw Darren Moore’s side fall to a 2-1 defeat at home to Oxford Uniter after a late injury-time winner snatched all three points for the visitors right at the death.

After that, the Owls were in action again in midweek with a 2-1 victory over League Two side Mansfield Town.

Looking ahead to their next league match against Bolton Wanderers, there’s one Owls player that played in midweek that we feel should be dropped with the weekend showdown – Saido Berahino.

On the chalkboard

Wednesday signed Berahino, who Moore described as having “a wonderful knowledge and understanding of the game,” on a permanent deal from Belgian club Zulte Waregem back in the previous summer transfer window.

Since then, the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.35m according to Transfermarkt, has made just four appearances for the Owls in League One, scoring one goal which came in their 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury Town.

Looking at his performance in midweek against Mansfield, Berahino failed to have a shot at goal either on or off target, made just 11 passes, eight of which were accurate and lost possession on seven occasions before being substituted at halftime, ultimately earning him a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.5, making him the Owls’ second-lowest rated player, according to SofaScore.

Taking this into account, it would be in Wednesday’s and Moore’s best interest if Berahino was not included in the starting XI to face Bolton at the weekend.

In terms of who could come in for the former West Brom forward at the weekend, Callum Paterson is one name that could return to the side considering he has two goals and one assist to his name in the league and an overall season rating of 6.77, making him one of Wednesday’s highest-rated players according to WhoScored, which shows just how important he has been for the team.

Either way, Moore will have to make sure whoever he starts up front against Bolton at the weekend will be able to help the side secure all three points to get the closer to the top of the table and in the running for a promotion place.

Frieza colombiana! Gols decisivos elevam o moral de Berrío no Fla

MatériaMais Notícias

Colombiano frio e calculista.

Man Utd fans on Murtough comments

Some Manchester United fans have been left fuming at comments from John Murtough which have resurfaced.

Speaking to the club’s fans’ forum back in September (via The Independent), which has since been resurfaced by utdreport on their Twitter page, the Red Devils’ football director said: “We believe that we’ve got the talent and the character within the squad to succeed. [We] need to keep control, don’t get carried away, don’t deviate from our plan. Ole and the staff are very focused on that.”

The comments have certainly left a bitter taste in the mouth for some members of the Old Trafford faithful, as they perhaps expected to be one of the main challengers for the Premier League title this season but instead lie in fourth spot after dropping points against the likes of Southampton, Aston Villa and Everton.

They have also crashed out of the Carabao Cup at home to West Ham United and lost their opening game of the Champions League group stage at Young Boys, matches that they should be expecting to win given the sheer strength of their squad and their summer investment.

These Man United supporters fumed as the comments from Murtough were shared on Twitter:

“I wonder what the plan is. I personally think they’re all not good enough to lead United as a club. Mediocre at best”

“Load of nonsense tbh. Everything he said is basics you expect at every single football club in the world. It’s copy and paste generic waffle. He should’ve outlined what he wants to achieve this season and next. Not just cop out by saying “we’ve got a plan”.”

Ganguly not fully convinced by Buchanan theory

Sourav Ganguly has made it clear that he is not completely convinced about John Buchanan’s multiple-captain theory for Kolkata Knight Riders

Sourav Ganguly: “All I can say is that I was not consulted on this. Frankly, it’s a new concept. It may work, it may not”•AFP

Sourav Ganguly has made it clear that he is not completely convinced about John Buchanan’s multiple-captain theory for Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL team he led last year. Ganguly claimed that he was not consulted about the plan and said he doubted whether other players in the team were aware of the new theory. On Wednesday, Ganguly had said at a press conference that he was not upset with Buchanan’s plans that would drastically dilute his powers as a sole captain. But later, the former India captain indicated in interviews that he did not fully back the idea.”Tomorrow I can jump out and say we need four batting coaches, four John Buchanans and Shah Rukh Khan can say we need six Andy Bichels,” Ganguly told NDTV. “These are all opinions; these are the way they are thinking how Twenty20 cricket can be played. We’ll have to wait and see because it’s completely new, it has never happened in sports.”Ganguly said that he came to know of his team coach’s plans through the media. “On Tuesday, John mooted the idea to me,” Ganguly told . “All I can say is that I was not consulted on this. Frankly, it’s a new concept. It may work, it may not. There are no guarantees in sport.”Ganguly, who retired from international cricket last year, said he hoped to discuss the concept with the other international players in the squad, including Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum, before the IPL starts in South Africa on April 18. Buchanan has identified Gayle, McCullum, Brad Hodge and David Hussey as the potential leaders in the side, apart from Ganguly.”Frankly speaking, I doubt whether the likes of McCullum or Gayle too would have heard about such a concept,” Ganguly said. “I am sure it will be new to them. At least, I have never been part of a team with four captains. We all need to first find out how it works.”

Celtic: Steven Caulker makes Hoops admission

Former England international Steven Caulker has admitted that he wished he’d signed for Celtic four years ago, The Scotsman report.

The Lowdown: 2017 links

Back in 2017, when Brendan Rodgers was the manager at Parkhead, centre-back Caulker was heavily linked with a move to Glasgow.

Caulker was 25 years of age at the time and The Scottish Sun believed he was set to become Rodgers’ latest signing.

However, as we know, a summer move never materialised and Caulker ended up leaving QPR by mutual consent at the end of the year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-15/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Caulker’s comments

Talking to The Scotsman in an in-depth interview, Caulker, who Calum Butcher said is ‘like Rio Ferdinand’, addressed a possible move to Celtic in the past.

He revealed that he had the opportunity to join the Hoops, however, he stayed in London, a decision which he later regretted.

“The summer before it, 2017, I had an opportunity to go to Celtic which I turned down because I felt London and QPR were better for my recovery.

“A few months after that I was then out of the squad at QPR and we mutually terminated my contract. At that point, of course I thought I should have gone to Celtic.”

The Verdict: A dodged bullet?

Since leaving QPR, Caulker spent 18 months with Dundee where he made just 17 appearances and is now with Turkish side Alanyaspor, where he is on £12,000-a-week.

The Hoops continued to win trophies under Rodgers and then Neil Lennon, so really, Caulker’s Celtic snub didn’t affect things at Parkhead.

You could say it was even a dodged bullet, especially as he didn’t exactly take the Scottish Premiership by storm with Dundee.
