Ireland shocked by Hassan's five

A round-up of matches from the Super Eights of the World Cup Qualifiers tournament in South Africa

Super EightsAfghanistan pulled off a massive upset by beating Ireland by 22 runs at Krugersdorp. Ireland did well to keep Afghanistan to 218 after electing to field, but their batting effort was dented by Hamid Hassan’s five wickets and tidy support from the rest of the attack. Hassan – who opened the bowling instead of being first-change, a move made in the last game – struck early by dismissing William Porterfield and later returned to really hurt Ireland; Andrew White (56) and Kevin O’Brien (52) had lifted the side from 73 for 5 to 186 but Hassan dismissed them in successive overs – both set batsmen were bowled. Hassan then polished off the tail are Ireland lost five wickets for just ten runs, bowled out for 196 in 47.3 overs. Hassan, described by Bermuda’s captain Irvine Romaine to Cricinfo this week as possibly the fastest bowler in the tournament, bowled four players in all.Afghanistan’s innings was propped up by Mohammed Shehzad (46), Asghar Stanikzai (47) and Raees Ahmadzai, who hit an unbeaten 50 from 65 balls to take the score to 218 for 7. Hassan ensured it was enough for victory. Afghanistan were totally outplayed by the UAE recently so to beat Ireland, who were unbeaten and heads-and-shoulders above anyone else, and the favourites to win, is fairly significant.Canada recorded their second straight win at Willowmoore Park in Benoni when they eased past Kenya by seven wickets in their first Super Eights match. Henry Osinde set it up with a four-wicket burst to restrict Kenya to a modest 181 before the batsmen eased home thanks to Rizwan Cheema’s early assault.Osinde justified the decision to bowl first by running through the top order. Kenya effectively lost the game in the 11th over when they lost half their side for 51. It was left to Jimmy Kamande to stage a recovery with the lower order after the seventh wicket fell at 105. He added 72 for the eighth wicket with Nehemiah Odhiambo, who remained unbeaten on 34. Kamande scored the only half-century of the match and his 86-ball 61 included eight fours. Cheema set off in a hurry with three consecutive sixes off Peter Ongondo over the on side but fell one short of his half-century. Kenya could manage only two more wickets before Ian Bilcliff and captain Ashish Bagai knocked off the runs by the 35th over.Jan Stander’s unbeaten 80 paved the way and John Blain’s five wickets sealed Scotland’s 26-run win over Netherlands in Johannesburg. Scotland were 59 for 5 – after Edgar Schiferli grabbed four wickets – when Stander walked in. He and Gavin Hamilton (52) added 58 to ease the cracks but again Scotland stumbled, this time from 117 for 5 to 120 for 8. Enter Blain, whose unbeaten 29 gave Stander support and helped the score to 216 for 8. Stander finished on 80 from 92 balls with seven fours and a pair of sixes. After a cool contribution with the bat, Blain took two wickets in two balls to hurt Netherlands. Netherlands recovered somewhat from 87 for 5 thanks to Bas Zuiderent’s 67 from 106 balls but Blain came back into the attack to complete the win. He finished with 5 for 45, Dewald Nel contributed 3 for 34 and Stander was Man of the Match for his super effort.”It’s just amazing to win,” said Stander. “We knew exactly what we needed to do today, we know what we need to do for the rest of the tournament, so it’s just really nice to get that win under the belt.”We also knew we had to field well and I think it’s probably the best we fielded in this tournament and Johnny [John Blain] and Nelly [Dewald Nel] definitely put their hand up and did a tremendous job with the ball. So, it’s just brilliant.”Also read Will Luke’s bulletin of Namibia’s 49-run win over UAE in Pretoria.

Play-offsShortly after losing one-day status, Bermuda gave their supporters something to cheer with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Oman in Potchefstroom to move to the final of the ninth-place playoff. The target of 255 was dealt with easily by David Hemp, who made an unbeaten 124 and Steven Outerbridge, who fell nine short of his ton. Rodney Trott, the offspinner, was the most effective among the bowlers with 4 for 43. Oman got off to a sound start with a stand of 117 between Hemin Desai (58) and Zeeshan Siddiqui (41) for the second wicket but the middle order failed to string together proper partnerships. They lost their seventh wicket at 175 in the 32nd over but a stand of 58 for the eighth wicket revived them. Sultan Ahmed and Amir Ali hit half-centuries to push the score to 254 but in the end it wasn’t competitive enough. Hemp carried his bat in his 125-ball knock and he shared a match-winning stand of 180 for the second wicket with Outerbridge.Uganda moved to the final of the ninth-place play-offs with a comprehensive 62-run win over Denmark at Senwes Park. Nehal Bibodi set it up with a run-a-ball 104 to push Uganda to an imposing 292 for 6 and the opposition could manage only 230 for 8 in reply. Denmark were on the back-foot after opting to bowl first as they struggled to break through the top order. Bibodi and Joel Olwenyi added an exact 100 for the third wicket and the most explosive stand was that of 64 in seven overs between Bibodi and Frank Nsubuga for the fourth. Denmark’s highest partnership was 99 for the second wicket between Mickey Lund and Carsten Pederson but a middle order collapse brought Uganda right back into the match. Lund top scored with 59. Uganda virtually sealed the game when the score read 149 for 8 and a ninth wicket stand of 81 delayed the inevitable. Uganda will now play Bermuda in the ninth-place play-off final at the same venue on Monday.

Delhi outclass Rajasthan in revenge win

Riding some momentum the Rajasthan Royals came to Bloemfontein to face the side they beat in the second week of the tournament to start an amazing turnaround. As it turned out, there was no positive carryover in a 14-run loss to the Delhi Daredevils

Riding some momentum the Rajasthan Royals came to Bloemfontein to face the side they beat in the second week of the tournament to start an amazing turnaround. As it turned out, there was no positive carryover effect in a 14-run loss to the Delhi Daredevils. In a pressure game they needed to win, Rajasthan let the early momentum slip with two drops and a missed run-out chance, lost three early wickets during a stiff chase and will rue allowing Delhi score heavily at the end of their innings. They now need to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders soundly in their final league game. If they don’t manage that the race for a semi-final spot shifts to net run-rates, and hoping some of the other teams slip up.In a match when the ball jagged and spun past the bat more often than it hit the middle – largely down to a sporting pitch that assisted pace and spin – two crucial hands allowed Delhi to recover from the loss of their openers. Munaf Patel appeared to have it figured from the first over, keeping it straight and on a length to get rid of the dangerous duo of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag in his second but returned to bowl a horror 19th over after Rajasthan’s support cast disappointed. From 15 for 2 a resourceful 87-run stand between AB de Villiers, who read the conditions excellently, and Tillakaratne Dilshan buttressed Delhi to a competitive total. And therein lay the difference between a reasonable total and a winning one.Delhi’s innings gradually changed character when Rajasthan’s second-choice bowlers came on. The pitch was slow and Shane Warne set attacking fields for the first ten overs, so all that was needed was for de Villiers and Dilshan to perforate the field consistently. The loose offerings weren’t spared – Siddharth Trivedi strangely dropped it short and wide when the pitch was demanding of a fuller length – and both batsmen slapped fours off his only over.As Warne brought Johan Botha and himself on for spin, de Villiers and Dilshan resorted to common-sense cricket. Balls were knocked in the gaps, the cross-batted shots were shunned and the score ticked over mainly with singles and doubles. Both employed the late dabs effectively and their ability to scamper between the wickets hurt Rajasthan. It wasn’t smooth sailing, though, as Warne got plenty of turn from a slow track and Botha mixed flight and speed in a tidy spell.de Villiers, not one for subtlety, bided his time and played himself in – much as the game’s situation demanded despite this being a Twenty20. Leading the partnership going into the ten-over break, he turned a tad more urgent after it, reaching out to edge Warne for three and taking Ravindra Jadeja and Abhishek Raut for first-ball fours off the back foot.Dilshan, always more comfortable against spin, continued to cut and flick after being dropped on 16 off Botha. Botha had his revenge in the 17th over, locating the fuller length which Munaf had so brilliantly tapped, but the damage had been done.Prime Numbers2Economy of Ashish Nehra in the last two matches. He has conceded 14 runs in seven overs14Highest number of wickets by a Rajasthan bowler, shared by Munaf Patel and Shane Warne12 Number of catches by AB de Villiers in the tournament, the most by a fielder in the tournament25Numbers of runs conceded by Munaf Patel in the 19th over, the second costliest of the tournamentde Villiers’ aptitude for regular rescue jobs came in handy while Dinesh Karthik walked into the hot seat and immediately connected. de Villiers prospered from a drop at mid-on when 57, a thick outside edge two runs later, and a poor collection from the wicketkeeper, and starred in the most expensive over of the innings – the 19th. That 25-run over aided an excellent 48-run stand in 20 balls. Impressively – and importantly for Delhi’s middle order going into the semis – de Villiers batted through to the end too.Warne was quite disappointed at losing the toss and would’ve been peeved at allowing Delhi 20 too many. Where Rajasthan’s butterfingered catchers reprieved Delhi’s anchormen, Delhi’s boundary patrollers held crucial early catches. In the second over Graeme Smith was well held on the second attempt by a juggling Aavishkar Salvi at third man, and in the next Dirk Nannes jumped up to hold Rob Quiney’s pull at fine leg. After six overs Rajasthan were 24 for 2, their second lowest effort after the Powerplay. That became 24 for 3 when Naman Ojha slapped Salvi to extra cover.Botha, promoted up the order, held up one end but never looked threatening. Rajasthan needed 91 from the last ten overs. Jadeja took two fours in the 11th over but Salvi drew an edge first ball of the 13th. Salvi only gave two singles in that over, capping a good return match in which he was accurate and economical. That brought Yusuf Pathan – hero of that earlier win over Delhi – to the crease. There was to be no reprise, Yusuf getting a leading edge to Karthik. Game set and match. Botha went for 37 and three fell in Amit Mishra’s last over like plastic ducks in a shooting gallery. Munaf’s free hitting in the last three overs was of purely academic interest. The result ensures Delhi a place in the semi-finals and leaves Rajasthan near the brink.

Southampton linked with move for Onuachu

Despite managing to secure their first win of the season on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Leeds United, Southampton have still only managed to score six goals in their opening eight league games of the campaign.

With this in mind, it seems as though the club have their eyes on fixing their goalscoring issue with a potential transfer move on the cards for the Saints.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Sport Mediaset (via Sport Witness) that Southampton are interested in signing KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu.

The striker joined Genk back in the 2019 summer transfer window from FC Midtjylland.

Previous reports suggest there could be a fierce battle for the forward with Arsenal and Inter Milan also eyeing a move.

Ings replacement?

Since then, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £19.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 83 appearances for the Belgian club, prior to their league match against Sporting Charleroi, in which he has managed to bag an impressive 56 goals and provide seven assists in the process.

That has earned Onuachu the title of “goal king” by John Fashanu, a review that explains why Southampton are attracted to the player.

On the international stage, Onuachu has also managed to score three goals in 15 appearances for Nigerian

So far this season, prior to Genk’s match against Charleroi, Onuachu has managed to score nine goals in nine league games, ultimately earning him an overall match rating of 7.44/10, making him Genk’s highest-rated player according to WhoScored.

Taking into account how the Saints sold striker Danny Ings to fellow Premier League club Aston Villa during the recent summer transfer window after he scored 46 goals for Hasenhuttl’s side in 100 appearances, perhaps signing someone with Onuachu’s goalscoring prowess could be just what Southampton need as a suitable replacement for the Englishman.

In our view, Southampton should definitely try their hardest to sign Onuachu and get him to St. Mary’s either in the upcoming January transfer window or the next summer window. The winter window would be preferable if they can so he can see if he can bring his goalscoring form to the club to keep them away from the relegation zone which would undoubtedly make him a club hero and a great piece of January business.

Leeds United eyeing FC Basel’s Arthur Cabral

Leeds United have been boosted in their chances of signing FC Basel striker Arthur Cabral amid speculation linking him with a move to Elland Road.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing the £13.5m-rated star, and there’s now been a significant development surrounding his future at Basel.

According to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Cabral has called off talks with Basel over a potential new contract, with his existing deal with the Swiss club coming to an end in less than two years time.

He’s got shades of Mark Viduka

In a piece for Leeds Live, Jon Howe wrote about Viduka: “He was an ominous physical specimen, an old-fashioned centre forward in many respects, but mixed a formidable presence with a delicate technique that made him the purest example of a ‘good touch for a big fella’ player you are ever likely to see.”

Standing at 6 foot 1, Cabral has the same kind of physicality about him, winning 4.7 duels per game in the Swiss Super League this season, while a scouting report on him is very encouraging.

FocusonLeeds said: “His ability to find space and shoot with power and accuracy is really impressive. He really comes alive in the box and a calmness about him when in goal scoring positions. At 6ft 1 he also provides an aerial threat with 6 off his 18 goals coming from headers.

“Arthur isn’t overly quick in terms of his speed however, he also isn’t slow. Due to his movement in and around the box, he still finds himself in shooting positions a lot. If you combine this with his dribbling ability and quick feet, this helps him work room to gets shots off at goal.”

That blend of movement, strength and clinical finishing marks him out as a potentially exciting parallel to Viduka, while he may already have a link to Leeds were he to arrive.

The man with 71 goals over his entire club career thus far will also now know Raphinha, with Cabral having been called up to the Brazil squad for the recent international break, being named on the bench for the clash against Venezuela – that was the game that saw the Leeds man of course come off the bench as a substitute and change the game with two assists.

Cabral could be an exciting Viduka-esque addition to Leeds’ ranks.

Meanwhile, this Leeds United star is now attracting big interest…
