Postecoglou must unleash Johnston today

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side overcame a rather large hurdle in the Premiership title race on Thursday evening, securing a 1-0 win over third-placed Hearts, the victory came at quite a significant cost for the 56-year-old manager and his side.

Indeed, Jota, Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston all had to be substituted due to injury, while Carl Stafelt also appeared to finish the fixture with a knock to his knee.

As such, it looks as if Celtic will travel to Dundee United today with something of a depleted squad. However, speaking after the Hearts game, Postecoglou suggested that the injuries picked up by a number of his regular starters will, in turn, provide an opportunity for those who are yet to get many games under their belt this term.

The 56-year-old said: “We saw on Thursday night that Adam Montgomery had to come on and he has not played for four or five weeks. We still have a fair chunk of important games coming up after [Real] Betis so it makes sense to get some minutes into some of the other guys so that when we call on them they will have played in this period.

“James McCarthy, Mikey Johnston, Liel Abada and Nir Bitton all come into that category. There is an opportunity to get some minutes into their legs and have them ready when required.”

Postecoglou must unleash Johnston

One of the players Postecoglou mentions above, Mikey Johnston, would appear to be in more need than most for regular first-team minutes, as, since his return from injury earlier this season, the 22-year-old has started just once for the Hoops.

Indeed, the winger has endured a frustrating last couple of years at Celtic, with the £900k-rated man featuring in just 10 fixtures last season due to injury, as well as missing a large portion of the start of the current campaign with a knock.

However, the former Scotland U21 international has proven that, when he is fully fit, he can be an extremely useful player in the Bhoys’ attack, scoring six goals and registering six assists over 22 appearances back in 2019/20, as well as bagging five goals and one assist over 23 appearances in 2018/19.

Furthermore, Celtic captain Callum McGregor is quite clearly convinced of the £7.9k-per-week forward’s ability, with the 28-year-old midfielder stating: “He’s such a brilliant talent, bags of ability, bags of potential and he’s one as well that the manager’s asking a lot of him physically.

“He’s responding really well and the guys are doing some great work with him in the physio department and sports science to really get him to a level where he can go and make that impact. Against Hibs, I thought he was sensational.”

As such, with it being clear that Postecoglou simply must begin rotating his side more frequently if he is to avoid a catastrophic injury crisis at Parkhead, the 56-year-old must unleash Johnston against Dundee United this afternoon, as the winger could well prove to play pivotal in Celtic’s Premiership push this season – if given the chance.

Pressure on Zimbabwe to stay afloat

Cricinfo previews the fourth ODI between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in Chittagong

After a pasting in the first game in Mirpur, Bangladesh have regrouped well to take a 2-1 lead but the manner in which they achieved that crucial last win left their captain Shakib Al Hasan thoroughly frustrated. Their batting hasn’t been dominant apart from the second game, when Shakib led from the front with his fourth ODI century. Luckily for the hosts the bowlers have compensated for that by relentlessly chipping away at the wickets and not allowing any decisive top-order partnerships to develop.Much of that success has been due to their phalanx of spinners who, with their various styles, have exposed the chinks in the opposition’s batting order. Zimbabwe’s batting is thin in terms of form and numbers; there have been no significant scores bar Hamilton Masakadza – who went past 1000 runs in the calendar year with his eighth 50-plus ODI score in 2009 – and Elton Chigumbura. The bowlers have compensated for that to an extent, not allowing any massive scores, but the lack of top-order partnerships have told.Zimbabwe have their backs to the wall and need to win the next two. The scenario is somewhat similar to this year’s home series against Bangladesh, which they conceded 3-1 after winning the third ODI to boost hope. Their last bilateral series win against Test-match opposition came against Bangladesh at home in 2006, by a 3-2 margin. Zimbabwe lost 11 of their 12 ODIs in 2008 and have won 13 of 23 matches in 2009. Even in series defeats to Sri Lanka and New Zealand over the past year they fought in periods, very nearly pulling off an upset or two on bowler-friendly tracks. They need to recapture that intensity now.Bangladesh have held the upper hand against their opponents in the last couple of years but the head-to-head record still stands about equal at 22-23 in favour of the home side.Form Guide (most recent first)Bangladesh -W WLWW
Zimbabwe – LLWWWWatch Out For Like Bangladesh, the batting will be the worry for Zimbabwe as well. Chamu Chibhabha has failed to go past 40 in his last 11 innings since his 51 against Ireland in Nairobi in October 2008, and a match-winning score seems due from one of Zimbabwe’s premier batsmen.Nazmul Hossain performed well in the last game, taking 3 for 13 from 4.1 overs. He was the sole fast bowler in the XI then and struck once at the top and twice to snuff out the tail. Bangladesh are heavily reliant on spin and so the pressure is on a young fast bowler like Nazmul, who would probably not have been playing had Mashrafe Mortaza been fit. He would want to reduce his economy rate of 5.51 and make as much of an impact before the slow bowlers are brought on to bowl.TeamsBangladesh have only named a squad for the first three games. Jamie Siddons, Bangladesh’s coach, said the XI would probably be very similar to the last game.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Raqibul Hasan, 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Enamul Haque jnr, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Nazmul HossainZimbabwe didn’t announce their 12 on the eve of the match. If Prosper Utseya and Tatenda Taibu are fit they will automatically slot in.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Chamu Chibhabha, 3 Brendan Taylor, 4 Tatenda Taibu/Forster Mutizwa(wk), 5 Charles Coventry, 6 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Prosper Utseya/Malcolm Waller, 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Ray Price, 11 Kyle JarvisPitch and conditionsIn Chittagong the batsmen usually have a lot more going for them than in Dhaka or Mirpur. The pitch at the stadium is made of brown clay and is expected to be slower, though firmer, than the Mirpur one. Though it is likely to be sunny, the stadium’s proximity to the sea means rain is always a possibility.Quotes”If you keep giving suggestions to a player who is not in form then more times than not it has a negative effect and it doesn’t help. He knows what he needs to do and that goes for every player in or team.”
“He is not performing but the team is winning so why change a winning combination? Besides, we don’t have any one better at the moment and unless someone else is scoring lots of runs and saying pick me then I don’t see any reason why we should change anything.”
“I had consciously started slowly in the last match and plan to play the same way in the remaining matches as that approach has brought be runs in the West Indies and Zimbabwe also. I admit this is not what the crowd wants but for greater consistency I have to adapt.”

Spurs gifted possible Dembele boost

As per Sky Sports Germany, Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a possible boost in the race to sign Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.

The Lowdown: Tottenham table offer…

According to a recent update in the paper edition of Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are well in the race to sign Dembele as his contract at the Camp Nou winds down.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Currently set to expire in 2022, the Frenchman could leave Barcelona on a free deal in the summer and is free to negotiate pre-contract moves in January.

This has apparently alerted Spurs and Paratici according to the Spanish source, with the club even making an ‘offer’ to his agents as they attempt to sign Dembele for new manager Antonio Conte.

Paratici has allegedly set his sights on bringing in ‘quality players’ for Conte at ‘zero cost’ with Spurs already tabling a proposal to the 24-year-old’s entourage as they attempt to sign him on a free in 2022.

However, as per 90min, Spurs are not the only club interested in signing Dembele with many big names keeping tabs – including Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Paris-Saint Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

The Latest: Bayern ruled out…

As per Sky Germany, Spurs may now have been gifted a boost in the race for Dembele as the reliable broadcaster now rules out one contender.

Indeed, according to their information, Bayern are not interested in signing the £210,000-per-week forward with there being ‘doubters’ at the Allianz Arena after analysing him.

The Verdict: Spurs gifted boost…

The Bundesliga heavyweights being ruled out of the race for Dembele can surely only come as good news for Spurs and Conte as they eye a move for the in-demand winger.

Tottenham’s restricted financial power, as evident by the fact they announced pre-tax losses of £80.2m and club debt rising to £706m recently (The Guardian), means they will need all the assistance they can get in the transfer market with European heavyweights like Bayern providing major competition.

However, as they hold no interest according to Sky, it appears Paratici and co won’t have to be concerned about them posing a January threat in a possible boost for Spurs.

Umair, Azam boost Islamabad

A round-up of the second day’s action of the eighth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2009-10

Junaid Khan took a match haul of nine wickets for Abbottabad but his efforts were undermined by a strong performance from Islamabad•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Islamabad were in complete command at the end of an action-packed second day against Abbottabad at the Diamond Club Ground. Abbottabad squandered yesterday’s hard work, when they had bowled Islamabad out for 182, by crumbling to just 100. Starting the day on a shaky 69 for 4, they added just 31 more, proving no match to the combination of seamer Shahzad Azam, who took 5 for 65, and Nasrullah Khan, as they shared nine wickets between them to give their team an 82-run lead. Abbottabad were fortunate to reach the three-figure mark, thanks to 23 extras, that proved the joint top-scorer.Islamabad’s batsmen made amends for their shoddy display in the first innings, piling up 319 for the loss of five wickets. Umair Khan led the way with a career-best, unbeaten 163 and was aided by Fahad Akram’s 59; the pair added 150 for the fifth wicket. The only consolation for Abbottabad on a terrible day was left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan’s 5 for 136 to go with his four-wicket haul in the first innings. By the end of the day, Islamabad led by an intimidating 401.A collective batting display from Faisalabad handed them the advantage over Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium. Bouyed by Naved Latif’s 105, Faisalabad secured a lead of 25 at stumps by reaching 326 for 4. There were important contributions from Ammar Mahmood (36), opener Imran Ali (30) but the best supporting hand for Naved came from Zeeshan Asif, who made an unbeaten 85 and added 156 for the fourth wicket. Naved scored at a healthy rate, striking 14 fours and a six in his 147-ball innings before falling to seamer Mir Ali.Lahore Ravi had the edge against Rawalpindi at the conclusion of day two at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. A career-best 6 for 29, in 19 overs, from medium-pacer Aamer Hayat helped Lahore bowl out the opposition for 271, allowing them to add just 70 to their overnight score of 201 for 5. Rawalpindi captain Naved Ashraf top scored with 74 but needed more support from the rest today to take his team to a more challenging score. But Hayat, along with seamer Waqas Ahmed (3 for 66), caused a collapse where Rawalpindi lost their last five wickets for just 36. Asif Khan made a patient 42 in Lahore’s reply but fell with the score on 73. Wahaj Aslam, unbeaten on 3, guided his team to 94 for 2 at stumps – still 177 adrift – in a slow response; they batted 53.1 overs.Left-arm spinner Jalat Khan was the star for Quetta, as he bagged best figures of 6 for 35 against Multan in Okara to put his team on top. Multan’s reply to Quetta’s 305 was weak, for they were skittled out for 178 and conceded a 127-run lead. Rameez Alam made 48, and added 78 with Naved Yasin, who made 35. But from then on, wickets fell at frequent intervals – fast bowler Imran Khan and Arshad Khan chipped in with two wickets each – and the batsmen who followed offered little resistance. Quetta would have disappointed with their performance with the bat in the first innings; nine out of 11 batsmen reached double-figures but the team managed a respectable, yet an underachieved, 305. But Jalat’s bowling display made amends for that and has given Quetta a genuine chance of victory.Peshawar ceded the initiative to Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium. They were comfortably placed at 234 for 4 at the start of the second day but went on to extend to to just 295. The last six wickets fell for just 61, thanks to a meek surrender from the middle and lower orders to the medium-pace of Bilawal Bhatti, who finished with 6 for 94. The Sialkot reply was strong, and they ended the day on top on 183 for 1. Majid Jahangir and Faisal Khan were unbeaten on 74 and 57 respectively, and had added 119 for the second wicket. Opener Kamran Younis had set up a solid start with a breezy 41 before his team-mates had the laid the platform for a successful overhaul of the Peshawar score and a sizable lead.

Group A

An unbeaten 117 from captain Hasan Raza enabled Habib Bank Limited to build on the advantage they had gained on day one against Pakistan International Airlines in Islamabad. PIA were 206 for 9 overnight and folded for 224, left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman taking 6 for 52. The HBL reply was unconvincing at the start, as they lost three wickets for 44. But Raza led the fightback and was assisted by Aftab Alam, who added 70 in a fourth-wicket stand of 116, and wicketkeeper Humayun Farhat, who scored better than a run a ball for his 64 while putting together 99 for the sixth wicket. Raza struck 11 fours and a six in his innings, steering his team into the lead, which had increased to 71 at stumps, as HBL finished the day on 295 for 7.Karachi Whites are in a position to force an innings-win over Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited at the National Stadium. First, Misbah Khan, batting at No.10, frustrated PIA in a final-wicket stand of 62 with last man Malik Aftab. The partnership took Karachi from 342 for 9 to 404. Misbah made 65 and the SNGPL bowlers didn’t help their cause by conceding 50 extras, including 23 no-balls. Then, in the SNGPL reply, fast bowler Tabish Khan tore through the line-up, taking 6 for 112, to skittle out the opposition for 199 and secure a lead of 205. Misbah delivered again, taking 3 for 41, to lend Tabish support amid a disappointing display from SNGPL, who only managed a top score of 44, courtesy captain Azhar Shafiq. The only highlight for them was offspinner Adnan Rasool’s five-for.Centuries from Rashid Riaz and Qaiser Abbas put National Bank of Pakistan on top against Pakistan Customs at the National Ground. After bowling out Pakistan Customs for 157 yesterday, NBP were not in the best position when beginning today at 114 for 4. But Rashid had notched up 77 and he progressed to his third first-class century while adding 82 for the fifth wicket with Wahab Riaz, who chipped in with 44. Rashid fell with the score on 174, but Wahab hung on to provide company to the belligerent Abbas, who smashed an unbeaten 136 in 134 balls, striking 12 fours. The pair added 103 before Abbas was further aided by wicketkeeper Amin-ur-Rehman, who made 40 and put together 99 for the seventh wicket before being dismissed. NBP had reached 376 for 7, a lead of 219, and opted to declare. In their second innings, Pakistan Customs stuttered to 45 for 1 as they attempt to wipe out a sizable deficit and the avoid the embarassment of an innings defeat.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited are in control against Sui Southern Gas Corporation at the Gaddafi Stadium. SSGC were only able to add 34 more runs to their overnight score and were bowled out for 264. Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Attari grabbed four wickets each to tilt the balance in ZTBL’s favour after the game had finished more or less on even terms on day one. Their batsmen, then, led a strong reply with openers Zulqarnain Haider (75) and Zohaib Khan (63) adding 147. However, both fell to Shakeel-ur-Rehman in very quick succession before Imran Nazir’s swift, unbeaten 24 took ZTBL to 180 for 2 at stumps, still 84 adrift.Water and Power Development Authority, boosted by an unbeaten 132 from opener Rafatullah Mohmand, took the honours on the opening day of the contest against Khan Research Laboratories in Rawalpindi. Asked to bat, WAPDA were given a strong start, with the openers adding 66. Mohmand added a further 56 with Sohail Nasir (22) but fast bowler Mohammad Irfan, who finished the day with 3 for 96, grabbed two wickets with the score on 122. But Mohmand stood firm, stabilising the innings with a 96-run stand with Jahangir Mirza, and taking his team to a comfortable 279 for 4 at stumps with assistance from Ali Azmat, who contributed a quick, unfinished 33.

Aston Villa offered PSG’s Gini Wijnaldum

Aston Villa could make a “huge statement” by making a move for PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum amid recent reports linking them with the midfielder.

What’s the story?

According to 90min, Steven Gerrard’s side are among a number of Premier League clubs to whom the Netherlands international has been offered, and it’s been suggested that Villa have not yet dismissed the idea.

And now, in response to those suggestions, The Express and Star’s Luke Hatfield has thrown his backing behind a potential Villa move for the Dutchman.

He said: “That would be a huge statement signing, for sure. Obviously, it hasn’t really worked for him at PSG since leaving Liverpool but he’s someone who has got boundless quality and energy in midfield.”

Gerrard’s pull

One of the big things and advantages that Gerrard’s arrival as manager brought to the table, was his so-called pull. As a Liverpool icon and recognisable figure around the world, the new Villa boss would surely have that extra bit of persuasion when it came to convincing potential transfer targets compared to his predecessor Dean Smith.

And in Wijnaldum, someone who’s lifted the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool before making the switch to European giants PSG, Gerrard could really show off his credentials by luring him to Villa Park.

The Dutchman played 217 times in the Premier League, scoring 27 goals and providing 16 assists, and came up with some big contributions in the big games – you only have to look at his two goals against Barcelona in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final comeback in 2019 to see that.

Former Liverpool ace Ryan Babel has previously raved about the £27m-rated Wijnaldum, saying: “I have no words for Gini’s performances and quality. He’s an incredible person. His energy is incredible, he has lungs for days. You can tell when he has the confidence, he’s really unbeatable and very hard to play against.”

At 31, Wijnaldum is hardly going to be the future of Villa, but if the club are looking for someone to potentially hit the ground running and really give them a shot in the arm for the second-half of the season, then he certainly fits that bill to a tee with both his quality and Premier League experience.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have made this man their top target for January…

Fielding coach futile, says Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf believes hiring a specialist fielding coach for Pakistanwill not make much of a difference to the side’s continued problems in thearea

Pakistan’s catching has been poor over the last two series•Getty Images

Mohammad Yousuf believes hiring a specialist fielding coach for Pakistanwill not make much of a difference to the side’s continued problems in thearea. Pakistan dropped five catches in all in their 170-run loss toAustralia at the MCG. That came on the back of the Test series in New Zealand wherethey grassed at least ten chances through the three Tests, including sixin the win in Wellington. The performance has prompted speculation in Pakistan that hiring aspecialist fielding coach is on the cards. Waqar Younis, the former fastbowler, is already with the squad as a bowling and fielding coach, but hehas only been appointed for the Australia series. In any case the brunt ofhis work lies in the fast bowling department.Pakistan have toyed with the idea in the past, occasionally hiring peoplefor the post, but no one has been retained long-term. Jonty Rhodes camein for a brief stint in 2006, just before Pakistan toured England, andYousuf believes the experience points to the futility of such a post. “Wecannot do more than what we do already about it,” he told Cricinfo.”What else can we do other than practice catching all the time. Even ifyou hire a fielding coach, remember Jonty Rhodes before the 2006 Englandseries? We dropped 20 catches in that series. Whoever comes will do thesame kind of practices and throw lots of catches and all that is happeningnow anyway.”The problem, believes Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam, is more deep-rootedand will probably require a systemic change at the domestic level. “Wemust accept that there were lapses in the fielding at Melbourne anddropping the openers was crucial,” Intikhab told Cricinfo.”We do a lot of fielding practice with all the coaches. I’m not going tomake any excuses about the conditions, the crowds and how we might not beused to it. There are some youngsters there, some new guys.”The department is such that if you work hard at it you can reallyimprove. We have hours of practice where we practice slip catches, highballs, flat ones, diving ones, running ones. We cover everything but I’vebeen saying for a long time, it is a grassroots problem. For departmentsand associations in domestic cricket, players don’t really do muchfielding practice. When they come into the international side, that iswhen they start learning properly and that is not easy.”
