Villa: Romano drops Douglas Luiz update

Aston Villa have not been shy when it comes to adding new players to Steven Gerrard’s squad during the January transfer window, highlighting just how capable and willing the club’s owners are to make the team stronger wherever possible.

However, with the transfer deadline on the horizon, it seems as though the Villa fans and Gerrard can rest easy regarding the immediate future of one of the club’s key players.

What’s the news?

According to a recent tweet from Fabrizio Romano, after being linked with a move in recent days, Tottenham will not make a bid to sign Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz this evening. The journalist then added that the Brazilian will be staying at Villa Park for the time being.

He simply commented: “Douglas Luiz will stay at Aston Villa.”

Villa signed the 23-year-old from fellow Premier League club Manchester City in 2019 in a deal worth a reported fee of £15m. Since then, the midfielder has gone on to cement himself as a central figure for Villa by racking up 94 appearances across all competitions, with three goals and eight assists under his belt.

Gerrard will be delighted

This season has seen the former City ace start 16 of the 17 league games in which he has appeared, with three assists added to his overall record, including one against his former club in December.

With that in mind, and Gerrard saying that Luiz is a player he rates “extremely high,” the Villa manager will surely be delighted to have the midfield maestro at the club until the end of the season.

Having missed out on the chance to sign Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus before he ultimately made the move to Tottenham on deadline day along with Dejan Kulusevski, it will be an additional bonus for Villa to have kept hold of one of their current midfield options.

Moving forward, with the £31.5m-rated midfielder’s contract at Villa set to expire in the summer of 2023, it would be worth the club making an approach to the player and his representatives at the end of this season to see if he would be willing to sign a new deal at Villa Park and continue his career there.

Lyth makes Somerset toil with 142

Adam Lyth hit a career-best 142 as Yorkshire dominated the opening day of the County Championship match at Taunton. After winning the toss the visitors ran up 296 for 4, with Joe Sayers (50) and Anthony McGrath (73 not out) also enjoying the cloudless skies and flat pitch. Ben Phillips returned a creditable 3 for 52 as Somerset toiled.Opener Lyth looked untroubled for most of his 255-ball innings, cracking 15 fours in passing his previous best score of 132, made against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2008.It was a tough start for Somerset’s new overseas signing Murali Kartik, whosent down 26 overs for 79 runs without taking a wicket. Lyth and Sayers produced an unbroken stand of exactly 100 in the morning session, with Lyth reaching his half-century off 81 balls. A couple of edges fell short of the slips, but otherwise the batsmen were untroubled.Ben Phillips made the breakthrough early in the afternoon session when Sayers played forward and edged to Kartik at second slip having just got to his fifty off 115 deliveries, with four boundaries.McGrath made a watchful start while Lyth continued to accumulate steadily, reaching his ton with a punch off the back foot off Alfonso Thomas in the 55th over with the score at 163 for 1.By tea, Yorkshire had progressed to 204 for 1, with Lyth on 113 and McGrathhaving begun to blossom on 31 – but both were given lives just after the break. Without adding to his score, McGrath was dropped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, while Lyth had added only a single when he was missed by Marcus Trescothick at first slip. On both occasions Phillips was the unlucky bowler.Lyth had excelled with his off-side play, but it was a pull shot that brought his downfall to the eighth bowler used by Somerset, Zander de Bruyn. Phillips took the catch at mid-on in the South African’s first over with the total on 251.Somerset delayed taking the new ball until the 89th over, but then struck twice with it in quick succession. Jacques Rudolph, who had begun with two cracking cover-driven fours off Charl Willoughby, drove tamely at Phillips and departed for 11 to a catch by de Bruyn at mid-off.The inexperienced Gary Ballance looked edgy and it was no surprise when heedged a catch behind on four to give Phillips his third victim. The two late wickets took the edge off Yorkshire’s day, but with McGrath looking more assured with every over, they still ended it in a strong position.

Modi's show-cause replies 'not acceptable' – Srinivasan

The BCCI secretary N Srinivasan has rejected the replies filed by Lalit Modi, the suspended IPL chairman, to the three show-cause notices saying they were “not acceptable”

N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, has rejected the replies filed by Lalit Modi, the suspended IPL chairman, to the three show-cause notices, terming them as “not acceptable”. In a six-page letter to the members of the board, a copy of which is with Cricinfo, Srinivasan rebutted Modi’s responses to the various charges, saying they merited further investigation and would be sent to the board’s disciplinary committee.Srinivasan said he had passed this finding to the members of the general body for ratification at the Special General Meeting, (SGM) scheduled for July 3, when a decision on Modi’s future will be taken.”Since Mr Lalit Modi had accused me of being biased against him, after a thorough and careful reading of his explanation against the charges, I have passed an order that it was not acceptable,” Srinivasan told PTI. “So, as advised by BCCI president Shashank Manohar, my order has been referred to the members of the general body to ratify my decision on the SGM called on July 3.”It is left to them to ratify my order after which the matter will be referred to the disciplinary committee. The show-cause notices, his reply to them and my order have been dispatched to all the members and a decision will be taken at the meeting.”In the letter dispatched on June 19, Srinivasan issued a point-by-point rebuttal of Modi’s responses to the three show-causes slapped by the BCCI on April 26, May 6 and May 31.The first notice dealt with the five main charges: the bids for Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, the broadcasting deal and reported facilitation fee, rigging of bids for new franchises in 2010, the sale of internet rights, and Modi’s behaviour patterns. After asking for a week’s extension to the original deadline, Modi responded with a voluminous reply running into 15000-odd pages.According to Srinivasan, Modi has admitted to “irregularities” in the processing of the finalising of the eight franchise bids. “…Mr Lalit K Modi appears to have admitted the fact that the bid in respect of Rajasthan Royals originally submitted by Emerging Media IPL Pvt. Ltd., and accepted by the Governing Council was finally awarded to another entity by name Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt. Ltd.”Srinivasan’s response to each issue addressed by Modi in his replies

Irregularity in processing of franchise bids – Sufficient reason to warrant a detailed inquiry.

Inclusion of “stringent clauses” in bidding tender – Modi inserted them without the approval of the IPL governing council.

Accusation of arm-twisting by Kochi franchise – If Modi’s explanation found to be correct, action to be taken against Kochi.

Broadcast rights – Irregularities in award of media rights; no reason to involve WSG Mauritius when contract had expired. An apparent loss of US$80m to the BCCI.

Internet rights – Prima facie gives leads to serious issues of nepotism and conflict of interest.

Misconduct against the BCCI – Modi’s explanation far from satisfactory.

Plans of a parallel IPL – Modi’s claims of malice on part of Giles Clarke irrelevant. Detailed inquiry would have to be conducted.

Theatre rights – Explanation not satisfactory.

Mid-over advertising contract – Board procedures not followed by Modi.

Srinivasan also denied Modi’s explanation that Manohar and the IPL governing council were aware of two new “stringent clauses” that were included in the tender on March 7, the original date for bidding of the two new franchises, which was then deferred to March 21. Srinivasan said that the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document, placed in front of the governing council on December 17 last year, did not contain the two “objectionable conditions”.In his reply, Modi had denied using any “arm-twisting” methods against Rendezvous Sports World, who alleged that the former IPL chairman used pressure tactics against the investors to back out despite meeting all the conditions. Srinivasan’s letter said, if Modi’s explaination is found to be correct, BCCI will take action against Kochi. In the charge involving the broadcasting rights, Srinivasan pointed out that Modi knew about the $80m facilitation fee, paid by Multi Screen Media, Singapore, to World Sports Group, Mauritius (original telecast right holders for the Indian subcontinent), but he was unaware of the “quantum” of the payment. The BCCI now wants to know why Modi involved WSG, when the deal with them had expired on March 15, 2009. “Prima facie it appears that the US $ 80 million is a loss caused to the BCCI.”In another stinging attack on Modi, Srinivasan accused the former of “nepotism and conflict of interest” regarding the internet rights for the league, which were awarded to a company that has Gaurav Burman, Modi’s son-in-law, on the board of one of the investors in GCV Mauritius, the company that won the rights.Srinivasan has raised similar concerns about Modi’s replies to the other two show-cause notices, citing the explanations as “not satisfactory” and reason enough to refer all these matters to the disciplinary committee.

Everton must unleash Yerry Mina

Frank Lampard got off to the perfect start as Everton boss, overseeing his side beat Premier League rivals Brentford 4-1 at Goodison Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

However, the win came at a slight cost as defender Ben Godfrey was forced off injured after just 14 minutes, with the 24-year-old’s manager stating: “It’s a hamstring injury which is to be assessed.

“We’ll have to let it settle for two days and then scan it, not good. He’ll be missing for a period of time depending on the severity of the injury, but it’s a hamstring.”

Monstrous centre-back Yerry Mina replaced Godfrey and just under 20 minutes later scored the Toffees’ first goal of the match and went on to impress at the back.

Now, with Godfrey set to miss weeks of action, Lampard has to entrust Mina and give him the opportunity to perform for the Merseyside outfit.

Labelled as a “monster” by Liverpool Echo columnist Michael Ball, the Columbian has only made nine Premier League appearances so far this campaign, starting seven having had a thigh problem from late October to early December.

It didn’t seem as though he was high up the pecking order under former manager Rafa Benitez but could now be set for a run in the side under Lampard.

The 43-year-old manager deployed a 3-4-3 formation on Saturday, suggesting that this will be his go-to setup with Everton. If so, Mina should be delighted.

With three centre-backs needed, the 27-year-old’s chance of game-time is significantly increased as is that of his fellow defenders. As well as that, Godfrey’s injury means that the Columbian seems dead-on to start the next handful of games.

It’s vital for his Everton tenure that Mina takes this opportunity; it’s a platform to build upon for sure. The centre-back is playing under a new manager who has new ideas and every player will have to prove themselves in order to earn a regular place in the Englishman’s side.

Since joining from Barcelona in summer 2018, Mina hasn’t exactly had the most successful spell at Goodison Park. The 6 foot 4 colossus has made 87 appearances for the Toffees across three-and-a-half seasons, with the 2019/20 campaign his best in terms of game time, playing 29 games in the Premier League.

Despite the impressive first game, Everton are still in a precarious position in the league and will want to see themselves steer clear of the relegation zone as soon as possible, which Mina could prove to be the architect of.

If the £120k per-week 27-year-old can keep himself fit then he may be set for his best spell in an Everton shirt with Lampard potentially being his saviour at Goodison Park.

Ireland not a one-generation side – Johnston

Trent Johnston has said that critics who called Ireland a one-generation side were wrong after his team’s victory in the ICC World Cricket League Division 1

Trent Johnston, Ireland’s stand-in captain, has said that critics who called Ireland a one-generation side were wrong after his team’s unbeaten run to the title in the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 tournament in the Netherlands. Ireland won all five group games, as well as the final against Scotland, despite missing key players such as regular captain William Porterfield, wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien and fast bowler Boyd Rankin, who were playing county cricket in England.”All those people who talk about the wheel turning, or that Irish cricket is a one-generation side, are very much mistaken and will be proven wrong if they look at the performances the kids have put in over the last 10 days,” Johnston said. “It is great to win another trophy that keeps us at the top of Associate level. We had a few speed bumps against Afghanistan in the last 12 months, but it was not (the case) here as we beat Afghanistan pretty convincingly a few days ago with an inexperienced side.”Ireland’s six-wicket victory in the final, however, was achieved after a couple of setbacks. Scotland’s openers, Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen, began the match with the highest opening stand of the tournament. “I was certainly not happy to see Scotland reach 141-0 after I had sent them in as we didn’t bowl very well at the start. But we persisted and stayed focused which earned us two key wickets,” Johnston said. “A couple of silly shots from their senior players later on got us back in the match and in the end we were left chasing 233 instead of anything in excess of 280.”Ireland’s bowlers fought back strongly and triggered a collapse during which Scotland lost 10 wickets for 91 runs. Ireland also lost three early wickets during the chase of 233 but were guided to victory by Kevin O’Brien and Andrew White, whose 160-run partnership was the highest of the tournament as well as a record in ODIs between the teams.”Kevin has matured as a cricketer and is working very hard on his game,” Johnston said. “We call White a finisher so I was confident that the two would take us home after we were struggling at 51-3. The two were expected to build a partnership and they did exactly that, and though White couldn’t take us over the finish-line, it was an excellent effort by him.”While Scotland were disappointed they couldn’t capitalise on their chances in the final, their captain Gordon Drummond said he would have settled for second place at the start of the tournament.”If you had offered me a second place and four wins out of six matches before the start of the tournament, I would have definitely taken it because we arrived here without a couple of key players and after having finished fifth in South Africa last year,” he said. “We were constantly assessing the situation [in the final] but when we reached 141-0, we were targeting 280 and this is what we should have got at the end. Something that we need to learn is to convert good starts into winning scores and kill off the opposition.”
