USA captain Steve Massiah believes his side’s early arrival in Hong Kong for the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 tournament will help them gain promotion to Division 2. USA, who were in Division 5 at the beginning of 2010, will arrive in Hong Kong on January 15, and will play two practice games before the tournament starts on January 22.”It’s tough for us to get together ahead of the tournament with people spread out across the country, but we’ve all got training schedules to stick to and we will all definitely have the fitness levels needed ahead of the tournament,” Massiah told the ICC.The hosts Hong Kong’s biggest advantage is that they have played plenty of cricket leading up to the tournament, their coach Charlie Burke said.”We played in the Asian Games [in Novemer 2010], albeit in the shorter format, but the opposition we faced was strong, and playing on a big stage against the likes of Afghanistan has really helped us prepare for Division 3,” Burke said. “We’ve just come back from a tour of Sri Lanka where we played three games against strong domestic teams and we won two out of three of those games. It’s the first time we’ve had wins in Sri Lanka which to me is an extremely positive sign ahead of this tournament. We’ve also had turf practice-nets put down now in Hong Kong which has been a huge plus for us when it comes to training.”Hong Kong and USA will compete with Italy, Papa New Guinea, Oman and Denmark for two promotion spots to Division 2.There are four uncapped players in USA’s squad for the tournament – left-arm spinners Ryan Corns and Asif Khan, wicketkeeper Ritesh Kadu and seamer Durale Forrest – and Massiah said they have all settled into the side.”Forrest, Corns and Kadu are all young, exciting prospects for us,” Massiah said. “Forrest is a former West Indies Under-15 player, Corns has represented the USA at Under-19 level, while Kadu has been a consistent performer in his local league in Southern California. Asif Khan is also a positive addition for us as we’ve been in need of a left-arm spinner and Asif provides that along with bringing the experience he’s had as a former first-class cricketer in Pakistan.”Hong Kong’s squad for the tournament has an average age of 21 as compared to 29, which it was when Burke took over as coach in May 2010. “Our vice-captain Courtney Kruger, who is a right-hand batsman, is definitely one to watch for this tournament,” Burke said. “Mark Chapman, who is just 17-years-old, was our highest run-scorer in Sri Lanka and is technically very sound for someone so young.”Then when you look at our bowlers, the Ahmed brothers – Irfan and Nadeem – are the ones to watch in our side. Irfan is a great strike bowler, who knows how to bowl with great pace and can deliver yorkers. His brother Nadeem knows the conditions here and gets some good spin.”Burke said he has a good knowledge of all the teams competing, especially Papua New Guinea whom he worked with in his previous role as the ICC East Asia-Pacific development officer.”I have a very good knowledge of the PNG side and in regards to planning for the other teams, I’ve seen recent footage of the USA and we’ve done our homework on Denmark too. I suppose Italy and Oman are the interesting teams as we don’t know too much about them.”Since the USA only received promotion after winning the Division 4 tournament in Italy in August 2010, they have not faced many of the Division 3 teams in recent times, but Massiah is not too concerned by that. “We don’t know all the teams particularly well apart from Italy who we played in August,” he said. “I personally have played Oman, Denmark and Papa New Guinea before, but that was over ten years ago now so I’m sure the sides have changed. We’ll be sure to do our research so that we can get on and execute our game on the day.”

Paul Sheldon has announced that he is stepping down as Surrey chief executive at the end of March after 15 years in the position. During that time he has overseen the club’s rise to become the most financially successful county, although that has coincided with a long-term slump in form on the field.Surrey’s strong financial footing has come from a number of schemes which included selling the naming rights to the ground and the construction of the OCS stand at the Vauxhall End of the ground. The club also benefits from a long-term staging agreement with the ECB and in 2005 and 2009 hosted deciding Ashes Tests. It has allowed the county to spend large sums on attracting big-name players to The Oval including Steven Davies and Chris Tremlett. However, there has been no swift upturn in results with the club still stuck in the second division of the County Championship but Sheldon has many positive memories.”I have stood down because I believe I have taken the club as far as I can, and that now is the right time to hand over the reins,” Sheldon said. “I am very proud of what we have achieved at the club over the last fifteen years. Most especially, I remember the winning era of the great Adam Hollioake side; the building of the iconic OCS Stand and the historic Ashes winning years of 2005 and 2009.”It has been a privilege to have served as chief executive of one of the greatest cricket clubs in the world and to have worked with so many talented people both inside and outside the club. Many of them have become good friends along the way.”Richard Thompson, the Surrey chairman, said: “Paul’s service to the Club, from running our 150th celebrations in 1995, to then becoming our chief executive shortly afterwards has been outstanding. Both on and off the field, Paul leaves a tremendous legacy and many enduring friendships. Paul will always be part of the Surrey family.”

Lost match in the field – Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan believes a poor morning in the field cost Bangladesh most dearly at Mirpur

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan believes a poor morning in the field, rather than a somewhat half-hearted chase of Australia’s healthy 270, cost Bangladesh dearly in losing the opening match of the limited-overs series at Mirpur. While Shakib himself bowled well to return a tidy 0 for 34 from 10 overs, he had little support at the death as the Australians stole 31 runs from the last two overs of their innings. It was this period, fuelled by new captain Michael Clarke (101) and the muscular Mitchell Johnson (26, 13 balls), that turned Bangladesh’s chase from realistic to improbable.”I think we gave them 20 more runs, I thought we didn’t field well today. Mainly that cost us the game almost,” Shakib said. “But I think the way we batted, we batted sensibly, we should’ve scored a bit more runs towards the end. If we’d been a bit more aggressive we could have scored a bit more runs, but I thought we gave them too many runs.”At one stage they were 225 for 5 with just two or three overs left, and they scored 31 runs in the last two overs. But that can always happen in the death overs when they have got set batsmen like Michael Clarke, who played very well. So when they scored 270 on that wicket it was really hard for us to chase it down.”Many in the crowd at the Shere Bangla Stadium were left puzzled by the nature of the Bangladesh chase, which petered out all too easily once the Wisden Cricketer of the Year Tamim Iqbal (62) was caught in the deep, leaving his team on 116 for 4 after 30 overs.Clarke expressed plenty of surprise at his opponents’ lack of ambition on an admittedly wearing surface. “To be honest I thought they played pretty well at the start of their innings, I was very surprised that they didn’t have more of a go at the end of the game,” he said. “I thought they might’ve played a few more shots, they still had wickets in hand, to me I’d rather lose the game with everybody getting out than only being five down and falling 70 runs short. So that surprised me more than anything else.”

Sussex hit back after Brown continues form

Karl Brown continued his liking for the Sussex attack by top scoring with 88 as Lancashire took control on the first day of the County Championship encounter at Hove.Lancashire won their meeting at Liverpool earlier this month by an innings and today moved into a decent position to continue their unbeaten start to the season as Brown, who made his maiden Championship century in that game, helped his side reached 322 for 6 at stumps. It was a tough day for the Sussex bowlers on a sluggish pitch until Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took two wickets in four balls in the penultimate over. A short boundary on the pavilion side gave the hosts little room for error and, although Monty Panesar again bowled accurately, the seam attack often lacked consistency and also gifted Lancashire 36 runs through 18 no balls – including three in successive deliveries from Naved-ul-Hasan.Openers Paul Horton and Stephen Moore justified skipper Glen Chapple’s decision to bat first by posting a stand of 129 in 36.1 overs – Lancashire’s best opening partnership since September 2008. Their progress before lunch was untroubled apart from a ball in his first over by left-armer Naved Arif which Horton slashed just wide of Ben Brown at second slip.Panesar, who has already taken 11 wickets this season, was introduced into the attack after just 75 minutes by acting captain Murray Goodwin and the left-arm spinner at least brought some control to proceedings. The opening stand was finally broken 20 minutes after lunch when Luke Wright, playing for the first time this season following a knee injury, nipped one back off the seam to trap Moore leg before wicket for 49.Horton followed in the 45th over and would have been furious with a soft dismissal. Having batted for nearly three hours and hit 13 fours in his 78 he mis-timed a pull at Naved-ul-Hasan and the ball looped off the top edge to slip where Ed Joyce took a simple catch.Bat was soon dominating ball again, though, and Sussex needed a great bit of fielding by Ben Brown to prise out Mark Chilton for 32 after he and Brown had added 82 in 22 overs for the third wicket. Chilton was sent back by his partner at the non-striker’s end after pushing the ball to Brown and failed to beat his direct hit from mid-wicket.The persevering Panesar was finally rewarded in his 24th over, but first after switching ends, when Steven Croft’s ill-judged reverse sweep was comfortably taken by Brown for four.At 266 for four there was a glimmer of hope for Sussex, who took the new ball straight away, but Brown added 55 with another 20-year-old, Luke Procter, and was on course for another hundred against Sussex when he was well caught low down at slip by Joyce for 88 off 161 balls, including 11 fours.Nightwatchman Gary Keedy was caught behind three balls later without scoring to give Naved-ul-Hasan his third wicket, but it was Lancashire’s day.
