McDermott tells Johnson to get a grip

Mitchell Johnson’s first advice from the new Australian bowling coach Craig McDermott must have seemed fiendishly simple

Having waded through the many technical tweaks and tips offered by Troy Cooley over five years, Mitchell Johnson’s first advice from his new bowling coach Craig McDermott must have seemed fiendishly simple: a new grip.Cooley and Johnson had been close to inseparable on Australian tours since the summer of 2006-07. But McDermott’s suggestion, that a more pronounced split of Johnson’s fingers across the ball might contribute to better seam position and greater control, indicates that a fresh pair of eyes could be useful for a bowler who at 29 has never quite managed to assume the spearhead’s mantle. The greatest difference between Cooley and McDermott is the international experience they each have to call on. Cooley’s modest Sheffield Shield career with Tasmania bears little comparison with McDermott’s 291 Test wickets and countless spells under the most intense of cricket’s spotlights.”It’s good to have Craig on board with his Test experience,” Johnson said in Brisbane. “I had a good relationship with Troy Cooley and worked really well with him, but having Craig there with his Test and international experience is going to be a big boost for us.”I haven’t worked on too many technical [aspects] with him; just my fingers, split fingers and things like that. Nothing too out there, but just little things here and there, which has been good. But having him on tour in situations where we might come off the field and he might see something that we’re not seeing, it’ll be good to have that experience.”Johnson’s mention of split fingers brought its own memory – many can recall McDermott’s split-finger slower ball, which comically confounded Aravinda de Silva and Hashan Tillakaratne during a World Series ODI in Melbourne in 1996. But when pressed to expand, Johnson related the fact that his stock grip had perhaps encouraged him to spray the ball in the past, and that his new mentor had suggested the adjustment.”I bowl with my fingers close together and I don’t have as much control with the ball,” he said. “So this just helps me stand the seam up a little bit; or hopefully that’s the plan – to stand that seam up a little bit and give me that balance with the ball.”I’m not going to be fiddling around with my wrist or anything like that at this [point. I’m going on 30 now and I don’t think fiddling around too much like that is going to help me.”Subtle advice on technique and tactics, plus a large helping of empathy, is a formula that has worked well for numerous bowling coaches across the globe. Former Indian bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad describes himself as more of a tactical advisor than a technical seer, while David Saker’s emphasis with England’s attack in Australia was as much about knowing the conditions as the bowling action.Johnson agreed that McDermott would be useful as he seeks to draw a line under the Ashes gremlins in his action that first surfaced in 2009 and returned again last summer, either side of a freakishly incisive spell on the second day of the third Test in Perth. Either side of the lunch break Johnson had appeared unplayable, but by the end of the summer England and their attendant Barmy Army had enjoyed very much the better of the duel.”That’s just the pressure of the game sometimes,” Johnson said. “I struggled over in England in an Ashes series [in 2009] and probably let it get to me. Towards the end of that series I started to feel okay, but I guess it’s just the build-up and the pressure of an Ashes series.”I haven’t found it in any other series, I haven’t struggled that much with the pressures, but it is a big thing, the Ashes. I haven’t thought too much about it but I would like to get better at it.”I think for me I put too much pressure on myself, because I try to bowl the perfect ball all the time and then I put too much pressure on myself. And in a big series like that you just can’t do that.”You look at their [England’s] squad, they’d been playing well for a long time, they’ve got a very good opening pair at the moment, a bit like a Justin Langer/Matthew Hayden sort of relationship. They’re working really well as an opening pair. So there’s a few things that come into it but I think I definitely try to bowl that perfect ball too much.”Johnson’s mental approach is now to close the gap between his best and his worst, so he may deliver sturdy spells even if the planets have not aligned as they did at the WACA ground last December.”Today was a perfect example, I didn’t feel at my best today but still worked through it and bowled good enough I think,” Johnson said. “I had a chat to Craig about it after and he said I looked pretty good. Having him and his experience as well is going to help me in the rest of my career.”Definitely it’s something I’m going to keep working on. You have your bad days but you’ve still got to go out there and perform, I’ve just got to find that balance.”That right balance, and the right grip.

Ballance steers Yorkshire towards to safety

Yorkshire stepped off the pedal after working their way into a promising position on the third day of their County Championship match against Sussex at Scarborough, and a draw now looks like the most probable result

Yorkshire stepped off the pedal after working their way into a promising position on the third day of their County Championship match against Sussex at Scarborough, and a draw now looks like the most probable result. With centurion Joe Root and Gary Ballance continuing to build on their big stand in the morning, Yorkshire looked well placed to take maximum batting bonus points while building up a useful lead. But they somehow lost their way after 20-year-old Root had been dismissed in controversial circumstances for a sparkling 160, and they were bowled out for 388 to trail by just 10 runs after the first innings.Ed Joyce and Chris Nash then got Sussex off to a solid start and at stumps they were 126 for 3 with an overall lead of 136. Root was already 111 and Ballance 34 when Yorkshire resumed on 251 for four, and Ballance enjoyed a piece of luck in the first over from Monty Panesar as wicketkeeper Ben Brown was unable to hold on to an edge.Luke Wells joined Panesar to make it an all-spin attack for a while, but the fifth-wicket pair soon took their stand into three figures before Ballance completed his seventh half-century in the last eight Championship matches. Both batsmen were in the same fluent form they had shown the previous day and Root’s 150 came up off 270 balls with 25 fours.Ten runs and 20 deliveries later, however, he attempted to flick a second consecutive boundary off Wayne Parnell to long leg, but Amjad Khan dashed round the edge and got his hand right hand under the ball. A split second later he threw it away in jubilation while tumbling to the ground and many spectators close to the action felt that he had not held the ball long enough for the catch to be considered under control.Umpires Trevor Jesty and Nick Cook conferred but were agreed that the catch was legitimate and Root walked slowly off after his marathon stay of six hours and 22 minutes, his stand with Ballance being worth 189.Suddenly, Yorkshire seemed to lose their momentum and Ballance and Richard Pyrah took Yorkshire in to lunch on 356 for six off 105 overs. Ballance, chasing his maiden Championship century, had reached 87, but he fell to the first ball after the interval, a short one from Parnell which he pulled straight into the hands of James Anyon at deep backward square leg.It was a disappointing end for the left-hander who had received 191 balls and struck 13 fours and a six. There was another fielding incident when Adil Rashid drover Panesar to deep mid-off where Parnell, running in on the ball, claimed a low catch but this time the umpires ruled he had not taken it cleanly. It did not matter, however, because two balls later Rashid sliced to Kirk Wernars at point. There was little inclination on Yorkshire’s part to end the innings with a flourish and the last three wickets were soon mopped up by Amjad Khan who finished with 4 for 70.Knowing that a draw would keep them well clear of the relegation zone, Sussex were not prepared to take any undue risks although Joyce soon hit Richard Pyrah for six over mid-wicket and when he reached 29 it gave him 1,000 Championship runs for the season.Ryan Sidebottom made the breakthrough at 62 by having Joyce caught behind for 42, and Steve Patterson picked up his first wicket of the match at 87 when Nash fell lbw for 32. But Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin continued to keep Yorkshire’s attack at bay until late in the day when Wells turned Rashid into Anthony McGrath’s hands at leg slip, Anyon coming in as nightwatchman.

Attacking India take complete control

A round-up of the action on the second day of the final round of three-day matches in the Emerging Players Tournament

India Emerging Players reached an excellent position to force an innings win over Australian Institute of Sport at Endeavour Park No.2 in Townsville.Overnight batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Ashok Menaria notched up centuries to take India into the lead and the rest of the top and middle order also cashed in. A series of useful partnerships and an attacking century from Saurabh Tiwary helped bat AIS out of the game. Manoj Tiwary made 59 off 62 balls, smashing five sixes. Once Rahane and he were dismissed, Saurabh stepped up with Manish Pandey in a dominating stand. Saurabh struck 14 fours and seven sixes in his 151 off 148 balls while Pandey’s 66 came off 50 balls, a knock laced with six sixes. The AIS bowlers struggled to contain the runs and were only able to bowl out India after conceding a lead of 229.Captain Ryan Carters put up a fight in the second innings as his team tried to save the game, remaining unbeaten on 56, but lost two partners before the close. AIS ended the day on 93 for 2, still 136 adrift. In a match dominated by the bat so far, South Africa Emerging Players held the advantage at the end of the second day against New Zealand A at Endeavour Park in Townsville. After New Zealand had racked up 382 for 7, opener Reeza Hendricks and No.4 batsman Farhaan Behardien went about leading South Africa’s reply. The pair came together at 101 for 2 and added 225 for the third wicket, scoring centuries along the way. Hendricks remained unbeaten on 184, striking 14 fours and seven sixes while Behardien also dealt in boundaries with six sixes in his 116. Behardien was bowled by seamer Brent Arnel, the most economical of New Zealand’s bowlers, but South Africa reached 374 for 3 at stumps, just eight runs behind what New Zealand managed.

Surrey on course despite Borrington resistance

A stubborn, unbeaten four-hour innings of 76 from Derbyshire opener Paul Borrington held up Surrey’s promotion ambitions

13-Sep-2011
Scorecard
A stubborn, unbeaten four-hour innings of 76 from Derbyshire opener Paul Borrington held up Surrey’s promotion ambitions on the second day of their County Championship Division Two match at the Kia Oval.Derbyshire had tumbled to 28 for 4 and then 62 for 5, in reply to Surrey’s big first-innings total of 468, before Borrington led some sort of a revival to 177 for 7 by the close. Surrey, though, were in a strong position to go on to win.It was a fine effort by the 23-year-old against some challenging Surrey bowling, with Tim Linley’s three new-ball wickets taking his season’s tally to 73, Stuart Meaker producing high pace, and the spin pair of Pragyan Ojha and Gareth Batty both extracting significant turn from a dry surface.Derbyshire captain Luke Sutton also played his part in his side’s recovery, with a determined 32 in a partnership of 90 after Ross Whiteley had initially helped Borrington to add 34 for the fifth wicket while swinging Indian slow left-armer Ojha for six and a one-bounce four to the leg-side boundary.Surrey began the day on 400 for 8, and Meaker took his overnight 17 to an unbeaten 55 as he and Linley stretched their ninth-wicket partnership to a more-then-useful 73. Meaker hit 10 fours in a fine innings that ensured the home side would put a potentially match-winning first-innings score on the board.Having achieved the maximum five batting bonus points on the first day, Surrey soon knew from events elsewhere that victory in this game – with their couple of bowling bonus points – would assure them of promotion to Division One.The first bowling bonus point took them less than eight overs to secure, with Derbyshire left tottering at 17 for three at lunch after Linley had removed Matt Lineker and Wayne Madsen and Ojha had turned his third ball to have Wes Durston caught at slip in the final over of the opening session.Dan Redfern was the fourth Derbyshire scalp, leg before to an inswinger from Linley as the Surrey attack looked like it was going to make short work of their opponents. But, after Whiteley was removed by a Meaker thunderbolt, edging to keeper Steve Davies, Surrey were frustrated as Borrington and Sutton first dug in and, slowly, grew in confidence despite being beaten every so often by Ojha’s flight and turn.In the closing overs, however, Surrey tightened their grip on the game again when Sutton edged a drive at Chris Jordan and was caught at the wicket and Jon Clare, after some meaty blows, fell leg-before for 21 to Ojha as he propped forward, to give the bowler late reward for his hard toil.
