Hot Spot axed from Ashes series

Hot Spot will not be available to third umpires during the Ashes in Australia after Channel Nine chose to remove the technology

Hot Spot will not be available to third umpires during the Ashes in Australia after Channel Nine chose to remove the technology. Decisions will now be subject to analysis by the Eagle Eye ball-tracker, audio from the stump microphones and slow-motion replays in case of a review.Warren Brennan, the inventor of Hot Spot confirmed the development, saying the decision had been finalised as far as the use of technology was concerned. “It’s their decision and that’s what has been communicated to us. As far as I’m concerned, it is final,” Brennan told the . ”We’re just moving on with things. Channel Nine have got a new deal with Cricket Australia, which I know has cost them a lot more money. I gather there had to be some restructuring of costs.”The costs of installing Hot Spot are around Aus $10,000 a day for a four-camera system installed by Nine, which uses infra-red imaging to determine contact between the ball, bat or pad – that puts the series cost of Hot Spot at approximately Aus $250,000. While the cost was a major determinant, the poor performance of the technology, especially during the Ashes in England, earlier this year was also a factor.Hot Spot came under criticism during the Ashes series for various reasons, including the silicon-tape controversy. Before the fourth Test in Durham, a Channel Nine report alleged that a few England batsmen used silicon tape on the edge of their bats to evade Hot Spot – charges that were denied by England captain Alastair Cook and the ECB. Brennan released a statement and called for protective coatings to be removed from bats.He conceded that these issues were a factor in Channel Nine’s decision to axe Hot Spot, and reiterated his claim of bat coatings hampering the effectiveness of the system. “The point that I was trying to make was that it does significantly affect us,” he said. ”The testing that we’ve done, and I haven’t released that testing yet, is that when the coatings are on it does affect the Hot Spot signature.”Brennan expressed his disappointment at Cricket Australia’s refusal to intervene, or to subsidise the cost of the technology. “I don’t have a beef with Channel Nine,” Brennan said. ”The disappointing thing for us is that Cricket Australia didn’t engage at all with us to try and come on board and help with this situation. They just said, ‘No, it’s got nothing to do with us. It’s Channel Nine’s responsibility.’ What’s disappointing is we work in four countries at the moment – well, until recently. Cricket Australia is the only body that doesn’t contribute to our costs for the DRS components.”New Zealand contribute directly to us, the ECB contribute and also South Africa. My only beef is with Cricket Australia because we tried to engage with them several weeks ago and they refused. We need to continue to invest and improve the product so that everybody thinks it’s getting better. If bodies like Cricket Australia won’t come on board and contribute to that, there’s not really any point in us continuing.”

Hot Spot may earn Ashes reprieve

Hot Spot could be set for a late entry into the upcoming Ashes series as part of a trial for an enhanced DRS, including Real Time Snicko technology

Hot Spot could be set for a late entry into the upcoming Ashes series alongside a trial for an enhanced DRS, including Real Time Snicko technology, having previously been jettisoned after talks between its inventor, Warren Brennan, and Cricket Australia broke down over the cost of the system. Now, however, the two parties are reported by the to have reopened negotiations less than three weeks before the Ashes resumes with the introduction of Real Time Snicko, which is also part of Brennan’s company BBG Sports, being pushed forward for full-scale use. The enhancement was trialled behind the scenes during the previous Ashes in England, but was not part of the available DRS process which was the centre of much controversy during the series. Most of that stemmed from the reliability of Hot Spot which appeared to not detect a number of thin edges with the third umpires using evidence from the stump microphones instead. Under the current DRS protocols, Snicko cannot be used due to the time it takes to match up the audio with the pictures but the Real Time version makes this an almost instant process.Earlier this year Brennan said: “I am hopeful that it would improve fine-edge detection dramatically. On most occasions, you are going to have the Real Time Snicko and Hot Spot agreeing with another. So the third umpire will now have two points of reference. There can be more consistency that way.”Although confidence in the DRS was dented during the Ashes series in England – which also sparked the controversy over taped bat edges which angered the England team – both sides remain two of the strongest supporters of using the review system and the boards are understood to be open to the upgraded version.David Saker, England’s bowling coach, still believes more correct decisions are made. “Obviously over the English summer, a few things went a little wrong with it,” he said. “But the majority of the time, they’ve got more decisions right than wrong – so I’m a big supporter of it.'”I think if we can get as many correct decisions as possible, it’s better for the game – not just for England. The decision obviously will be made by Cricket Australia, but I’d definitely welcome it for sure.”Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper, supports the DRS if the technology is reliable. “I’m a fan of the review system and technology. At the end of the day there is a huge amount on each decision and you have to get the right decision,” he said shortly before the tour started. “If Hotspot is inaccurate it cannot be used and we have to find another way of getting to the right decision. As long as the right decision is made, that is all the players want.”An enhanced DRS – which will require approval from the ICC – would bring the role of the third umpire back to the fore. It has been suggested that because of the key position third umpires now hold in the decision-making process, away from the traditional line decisions of run outs and stumpings, that extra training is required and potentially a panel of specialist TV officials to support on-field umpires. The back-to-back Ashes have put pressure on the ICC’s elite panel of umpires because the majority come from England and Australia which makes them ineligible to stand in the 10 Tests which began in July and run until early January in Sydney.Only four umpires – Marais Erasmus, Aleem Dar, Tony Hill and Kumar Dharmasena – are available for the Test matches and are rotated through the on-field and TV roles. There have been talks about selecting from the international panel of umpires, the level below the elite, to ease the burden and Billy Bowden, who was demoted earlier this year, has been the name mentioned.

How Aaron's spell shook Mumbai's top order

Fourteen overs spread over three sessions is not much to go by but Varun Aaron’s furious seven-over burst before lunch against Mumbai was another indication that his comeback from a long injury layoff is progressing well

Fourteen overs spread over three sessions is not much to go by but Varun Aaron’s furious seven-over burst before lunch against Mumbai was another indication that his comeback from a long injury layoff is progressing well. Aaron returned to first-class cricket after two years this Ranji season following his recurrent back troubles. Into his fourth match, he’s taken 13 wickets at an average of 20.30. More heartening than the numbers was the pace, bounce, seam and swing he generated in those seven overs before lunch that claimed Wasim Jaffer and Sushant Marathe.Aaron was unplayable at times during that spell, straightening the ball on a tight line around off stump and getting it to climb sharply. He also slipped in the surprise yorker, nearly claiming Siddhesh Lad after making him think a short ball was forthcoming with a short leg in place. Often, deliveries took off from good length and flew high into the keeper’s gloves.”I think the first spell was very fast,” Shahbaz Nadeem, the Jharkhand captain, said. “I was standing at point and there were one or two deliveries that I could not spot at all. I saw them being released and then straight in the hands of the keeper. He bowled even quicker against Karnataka. If Varun is in rhythm, the nature of the pitch does not matter to him. What he did in the first spell was tremendous. The first two wickets were very important for us.”This wasn’t a helpful pitch, as Mumbai’s seamers had discovered and their keeper Aditya Tare admitted. To beat as good a batsman as Jaffer with pace and bounce on the cut needed some effort. “That [Aaron’s spell] shook us,” Tare said. “Wasim is a big batsman and in good form. That was a big wicket. The pitch isn’t all that great for a fast bowler and is kind of slow. But he bowled quick. But I think Umesh [Yadav] bowled a bit quicker [for Vidarbha in Mumbai’s previous game].”Aaron was used quite sparingly after lunch. He bowled two spells of two overs each in the second session and sent down only three overs after tea. Given his frequent breakdowns, Jharkhand did not want to extend their premier fast bowler as he seeks to rebuild his career. Aaron also did not go flat out like he had before lunch.”He is returning from injury after two years,” Nadeem said. “He is not a bowler who can bowl long spells. He is a bowler who will come for three-four overs and bowl quick. He requires more effort. In the two overs he bowled after lunch, he saw that the ball was not swinging. So I suggested that you stop and I’ll try the other bowlers.Nadeem did not think Aaron was holding himself back at all. “He goes all out each time he plays a game,” he said. “This season, every game he’s delivered spells where you can see he’s bowling quick and is on top of the batsmen. But as your shoulders tire, you automatically slow down. You lose your freshness. A fast bowler cannot bowl 145-146 kph every spell in days’ cricket. It can happen in one-day cricket, but in days’ cricket the second and third spells will come down to 140-141.”As long as Aaron can deliver a similar, energetic spurt on the third morning, Jharkhand will be glad to manage his workload for the remainder, if any, of the Mumbai innings.

‘Kohli, Rohit look most capable for SA conditions’ – Agarkar

Zaheer Khan has been recalled to the India Test squad for the forthcoming tour of South Africa. Zaheer is one of five fast bowlers for the two-Test series, and the only newcomer to the 17-member squad is the batsman Ambati Rayudu. However, there was no place for the opener Gautam Gambhir, who scored a century for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy days before the selection meeting. It is learnt that the team management indicated to the selectors that they did not want Gambhir in the squad.Zaheer Khan last played a Test during the home series against England last December•Associated Press

Zaheer, who last played for India during the home Tests against England last December, was recently omitted from the list of centrally contracted players for the current season. The injury-prone left-arm seamer made a return to the longer format this season with 13 wickets in three Ranji games for Mumbai, including a five-wicket haul. However, he was not considered for the one-day squad. Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh – two other players who were not handed central contracts – have been left out of both squads. The Test squad also has Wriddhiman Saha as the backup wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni, the captain. Saha last played for India during the Adelaide Test of 2012. Ravindra Jadeja, the allrounder, returns after sitting out the West Indies Tests to rest his injured shoulder. He is the third spinner in the squad after R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.Rayudu, 28, made his international debut during the one-day tour of Zimbabwe in August, where he scored one fifty. Amit Mishra, the legspinner, remains in the one-day team but was not included for the Tests.Squad changes for South Africa tour

The surprise inclusion in the one-day squad is the fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who was expensive during the seven-match ODI series against Australia recently. Ishant leaked 189 runs in three matches and was dropped after he conceded a whopping 30 runs in one over, which cost India the Mohali ODI. Ishant was part of the Test squad against West Indies but lost his place to the impressive Mohammed Shami, playing his first Test series.0:00

He is like a mentor to us and it is an honour to play international cricket alongside him. Zaheer’s advice in match situations is invaluable as he is a brilliant reader of opposition batsmen.”The tour gets underway with the first of three ODIs starting December 5, followed by the two Tests.Test squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Ambati Rayudu, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Pragyan OjhaODI squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra
