Bell's 'perfect template' lifts England

After hammering 187 in England’s second warm-up match in Australia, Ian Bell said his innings was the “perfect template” for how he hopes to open the batting

After hammering 187 in England’s second warm-up match in Australia, Ian Bell admitted to underperforming in the past but said his innings was the “perfect template” for how he hopes to open the batting. Bell conceded he had been worried about his World Cup place but was granted a chance to restate his case after Alastair Cook was dropped.Bell had been successful as ODI opener after moving up the order in 2012, without quite scoring the number of centuries his talent demanded. He shifted to No. 3 as England tried Alex Hales as Cook’s partner and then was dropped altogether, playing only two matches out of seven on the Sri Lanka tour, but was told he would return to the starting XI by new captain, Eoin Morgan. With Moeen Ali continuing his impressive one-day form, Bell’s knock, the highest by an England batsman (although the match did not have List A status), was another fillip ahead of the tri-series with India and Australia, which begins on Friday.”Coming out here I didn’t know where I was going to bat or if I would start, so it was nice to have a good chat with Morgs and for him to say I would get first crack at opening,” Bell said.”That filled me with a lot of confidence. It’s nice to have a good start but the big stuff starts on Friday. I haven’t thought about the World Cup, we want to play well in the tri-series, take it a game at a time. There were some good signs this week, some good things to take forward.”Bell’s return got off to a solid start with a half-century against an ACT Invitational XI on Monday, as England amassed 364 for 6. Their positive intent reaped even greater rewards against a stronger Prime Minister’s XI, with Moeen hitting 71 off 49 balls in a century opening stand and Bell batting for all but one ball of the 50 overs. He put the innings down as was one of his most enjoyable.”One thing I’ve probably been guilty of in the time I’ve been opening is getting to 60, 70, 80 but never really gone on and enjoyed myself the way I did today,” he said. “Hopefully I can use that and if I can do that a couple of times this winter, that’s great for the team.”I’ve been guilty in one-day cricket of getting a lot of fifties and not converting enough. That’s what I can do if I bat 49.5 overs or whatever it was. I’ve spoken to Mooresy about that, I believe I can play at the top of the order for England. The thing is converting starts into match-winning scores. Today was pretty much perfect, template-wise, how I’d like to play in one-day cricket.”Having slipped down the pecking order and with England intent on giving opportunities to Moeen and Hales, Bell had been in danger of missing out on the World Cup 15. The late decision to dispense with Cook as captain meant Bell’s experience was all the more valuable and his performances so far suggest he can repay the faith of Morgan and the coach, Peter Moores. Successive victories have also lifted the general mood surrounding the ODI side after a disappointing run of results.”Of course,” Bell said, when asked if he had worried about his place. “When you narrow the squad down and a lot of people have come in and done well… You want it to be competitive, people playing for places. That’s a good thing but it’s nice to get on the tour and start well.”I’ve done a lot of netting in the last month or so but not a lot of game time. It was nice to get a really big score in a competitive game. I’m trying to focus very much on what I’m doing and striking it well, but the way Mo is playing at the minute is pretty destructive. He’s had a great week and we want to start again on Friday.”We couldn’t have asked for better preparation going into the tri-series. It was a good run out for the bowlers as well. A good week for us.”

Clarke could have played England – Warne

Shane Warne believes Michael Clarke is fitter than he has been for five years and should have been picked for Australia’s World Cup opener against England on Saturday

Australia have many match-winnners – Warne

Shane Warne believes Australia have never entered a World Cup with as many potential match-winners as in 2015. “We’ve been favourites a few times,” he said. “But … I can’t remember going into a World Cup with Australia having so many match-winners. There’s probably seven or eight guys who on their own could turn the course of a game no matter what. If you look around the other teams they’ve got two or three or maybe four.”
Australia enter their opening match against England at the MCG having won 13 of their past 15 ODIs against England in Australia. But, despite the talent, Warne said that record would mean little, given the pressure and expectations are vastly different from a bilateral or tri-series. “I don’t think that previous games and history comes into a World Cup tournament. Your mindset changes a little bit in a World Cup. It’s like ‘what happens if we lose to these guys?’ There’s a bit of a fear of not doing that well. But I think the Australian guys are in pretty good form, they’re pretty relaxed. I’ve spoken to most of the guys, the vibe is good in the team.”

Shane Warne believes Michael Clarke is fitter than he has been for five years and should have been picked for Australia’s World Cup opener against England on Saturday. Clarke has been ruled out of the game as he continues his recovery from hamstring surgery, though he is expected to return to the side for next Saturday’s game against Bangladesh at the Gabba.Clarke played in a warm-up match against the UAE in Melbourne on Wednesday; he top scored with 64, bowled two overs, fielded throughout the innings, and took part in further one-on-one fielding drills after the game. But the Australian management decided not to risk rushing Clarke back for the England game ahead of his intended return against Bangladesh.”I think he’s just ready to go,” Warne said at a promotional event in Melbourne. “Obviously the physios and everybody planned a certain path for Michael, they said ‘right this is the eight-week period, you need to do this and need to do that’. They’ve basically tried to break him. They’ve tried to break him with his fitness tests, they’ve tried to break him in all parts of it.”To see him come through with flying colours and be fitter than he’s ever been for at least three to five years, he reckons, being that fit at the moment, he knows deep down now that he’s done. There’s nothing more that he can do. He’s done everything, he’s ready to go. I’m expecting some big things from him. He’s pretty hungry at the moment to play.”When Warne says Australia “tried to break” Clarke, presumably he means it in a positive way, pushing Clarke to the limits to ensure he would not break down in a match. That is understandable, for Clarke has broken down in each of his past two ODIs, as well as his most recent Test. But Warne, a close friend of Clarke, believes Australia’s captain has many years left in him.”Some of the stuff I’ve been reading – you’d think he is 45. He’s only 33,” Warne said. “I think he can still play for a long time. I think that’s what they want, they want to make sure he’s okay. Stick to the program and then he’s got longevity, he’ll make the whole tournament and go on. He’ll play West Indies, the Ashes and keep going until he’s had enough. Hopefully that’s five years’ time because we need him out there.”He’s such a good player. You think back over the last few years, how well he’s done when the side wasn’t playing well. Let alone when it’s just started to come well under his captaincy. I think he’ll be hurting not playing this game. He’ll be itching. It’ll probably make him hungrier to play.”Warne said it was remarkable that Clarke was even in contention for this game, given the severity of the hamstring injury that he sustained during the Adelaide Test in December. Warne compared Clarke’s recovery to that of AFL footballer Nick Riewoldt, who had suffered a similar injury and took much longer to return to action than Clarke.”For me it’s testament to Michael Clarke and his endeavors, how passionate he is about the game and how much he loves playing for Australia,” Warne said. “For four to five hours of doing that work every single day, to get himself right.”I spoke to Nick Riewoldt last night and he had a similar injury with his hamstring and I think he was gone for 14 weeks. To show that he’s basically six weeks ahead of schedule – to someone like Nick Riewoldt who is an elite athlete. He was a little bit worse, but pretty similar. It just shows how hard he’s worked to get back.”

GOLEIROS MARCANDO A DIFERENÇA

FAZ E ME ABRAÇ…

AB de Villiers’ rapid 99 and Farhaan Behardien unbeaten 64 off 31 balls took South Africa to 341 for 6 and thumped UAE by 146 runs

The Report by Alagappan Muthu12-Mar-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

UAE’s slow bowlers had tossed sugar into the fuel tank of the South African batting machine on a sluggish track at the Regional Stadium. But AB de Villiers’ rapid 99 had it purring in no time for Farhaan Behardien to step on the gas in the final overs with an unbeaten 64 off 31 balls to reprise their record of scoring 300-plus every time they have batted first in this World Cup, and thump UAE by 146 runs. You wouldn’t want to be the team that comes up against South Africa after a loss. They have gone down nine times in ODIs in the last 12 months and have won the next game with a vengeance on five occasions – the most recent being a caning of West Indies by 257 runs in Sydney and De Villiers was the clincher again. He repaired a minor top-order wobble by adding 108 off 107 balls with David Miller and built his own innings towards the crescendo that has become a day-to-day occurrence.De Villiers arrived in the 17th over as Mohammad Tauqir, the offspinner, and Amjad Javed, who may as well be called the offcutter, were in the middle of a productive spell. They gave away only 43 runs between the 11th and 21st overs and only twice did the ball reach the boundary. There were five times as many in the first 10, which highlights the skill of the two bowlers and South Africa’s uncertainty against slow bowling.Rilee Rossouw’s stint at No. 3 was a perfect case study. There was no swing for the UAE seamers and they pitched the ball on either side of the good length area for Rossouw to punch and pull. Kamran Shazad, who replaced Manjula Guruge despite a 4 for 56 against Pakistan, was hit out of the attack after twin fours in three of his five overs. South Africa cruised past 50 in the ninth over and Rossouw was 28 off 17. But he was beaten first ball by Tauqir’s offspin and was fortunate his off stump was left standing. The same theme continued for the 13 balls Rossouw faced from the UAE captain, which cost only three runs, and his wicket for 43 off 49.Even de Villiers was briefly tied down – 32 off 41 balls in the 29th over. But it was simply clever batting considering UAE’s death bowling stocks wouldn’t tempt a compulsive gambler and they conceded 101 runs in the final 10 overs.UAE could have bailed themselves out had Javed taken a return catch off de Villiers in the 38th over. Instead, he had to watch his next ball sail beyond the midwicket boundary. There was another six, and three more fours, as de Villiers peppered the fence like an impulsive shopper flicking things onto his cart because he felt like it. Thirty-two off 41 had become 90 off 75 with hardly a fuss.A fifth century in the last 25 innings beckoned, but one short of the mark, de Villiers sliced Shazad’s medium pace to short third man. A crop of school kids clutched their heads in disbelief, but the man himself walked off with a smile. It was his first 99 in 178 innings, and his wicket allowed just enough time for Behardien to stake his claim as a finisher. He doesn’t look powerful and there will be questions over his ability to handle better attacks, but his swipes and hacks were enough to secure five fours and three sixes in an unbeaten 31-ball 64. Mohammad Naveed had begun his spell with a beamer that nearly took down Hashim Amla, but he finished as UAE’s most successful bowler with 3 for 63.A target of 342 against the calibre of South Africa’s pace attack meant UAE’s only realistic aim was surviving 50 overs. There were spurts of brilliance – Amjad Ali’s instinctive pull off Dale Steyn in the first over, Shaiman Anwar’s vicious straight drives against Vernon Philander in the 26th over and Naveed hoisting Steyn into the stands behind long-on – but they were lost amid Steyn and Philander whizzing past the outside edge numerous times, Khurram Khan wearing a nasty bouncer on the ear and Andri Berenger helplessly fending a catch – a stunning one – to Rossouw at point. The latter two incidents epitomised the menace of Morne Morkel, who finished with 10-2-23-2 and conceded only one boundary. Anwar ‘s efforts frustrated South Africa for 64 balls to claim the record for most runs by an Associate batsman in World Cups and Swapnil Patil’s 100-ball 57 took them through to the 48th over. Some consolation during an innings that posed no threat to the target and a day on which they lost seamer Fahad Alhashmi to a knee injury on World Cup debut.South Africa will still be worried about Quinton de Kock, though. He averages 8.83 in the tournament so far and today, he misjudged the pace of 130-140 kph bowlers and appeared similarly unsure of his running between the wickets. His fifth boundary in as many matches took him to his highest score of the World Cup – 26 off 45 – and finally was undone by a canny offcutter from Javed. A tame format has allowed South Africa to carry out of form players and slip into the quarter-finals by beating only one top-eight side, but come the knockouts they will need all hands on deck to prove de Villiers’ claims of being the best team in the world.

'Challenge has been to evolve' – Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene said that he had no regrets about hanging up his blue Sri Lanka shirt for the final time after their World Cup quarter-final defeat to South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Mar-20151:35

Chappell: Sangakkara-Jayawardene an ornament to the game

After Mahela Jayawardene’s final match for Sri Lanka ended in a World Cup quarter-final defeat to South Africa, he said that he would probably be allowing himself a lie-in. Jayawardene and his great friend Kumar Sangakkara were hoping for a glorious swansong in their final World Cup but neither could pull Sri Lanka out of the fire against an irresistible South Africa.Jayawardene has already called time on his career in Tests and T20 internationals and he said afterwards that he had no regrets about hanging up his blue Sri Lanka shirt for the final time.”I’ll probably wake up a bit late tomorrow for a change,” he said. “I will miss it but that’s reality, you know that the time is right for you to leave and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it, it’s been great playing with all these guys, had some great friendships – no regrets.”A famously feisty competitor, Jayawardene only managed one significant contribution at the World Cup – but that was a match-winning hundred against Afghanistan to get Sri Lanka up and running in the group stage. Having made his international debut in 1997, Jayawardene has played through a period of huge change in the game – including the introduction of T20 and the rise of video analysis – and he said that he relished the challenge of constantly trying to stay ahead.”The hardest thing is to evolve with everything, everyday it’s something new – teams developing, they always come up with something new, so for you to survive and to keep up with that you need to keep pushing yourself,” he said. “I think that’s the most important thing, be it mentally, physically, or trying to outsmart someone. That’s been the toughest thing.”I think enjoying that with the group of players in the dressing room, that’s the most satisfying thing. Every cricketer loves spending time with his mates and going out playing cricket. The challenge has been to evolve for such a long period. From where I started in 1997, now I’m finished, the cricket has improved drastically.”Asked if he thought standards had risen, he said: “Definitely, if you take the bowlers, the variations – I don’t think any of those guys, except for one or two bowlers, had that amount of variations in their armoury. Even the batsmen nowadays play so many different shots, so I think skill-wise the game has evolved. The tactics have changed, field settings have changed, the way people look at the game has changed, more analysing – people know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are, so I think that has been fantastic.”Sri Lanka had been billed as the knockout specialists who could press South Africa’s self-destruct button in Sydney but the nine-wicket margin of victory, with more than 30 overs to spare, told a different story. Jayawardene and Sangakkara had signed off in T20 by leading Sri Lanka to that title last year but there was to be no repeat of the fairytale.”No, it’s been tough, we’ve had a pretty good campaign so far, but we did pretty much everything wrong today,” Jayawardene said. “Credit to the South Africans, they bowled really well up front, put us under pressure and we were not able to cope with that. You can’t write your own scripts, we did that in the T20 World Cup but this one was too far for us.”
