Newcastle reportedly scouting Ligue 1 striker Victor Osimhen

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle United are monitoring the development of the exciting Ligue 1 striker Victor Osimhen, according to The Chronicle.

What’s the word?

Osimhen, 20, made the move to the French outfit from RSC Charleroi in the summer for £10.2m and has got off to a flying start in France.

With eight goals in all competitions this season, he has impressed the Toon talent finders and even scored against Chelsea in the Champions League during his side’s 2-1 defeat to the London based-outfit.

The Nigerian forward started at German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg and has become a full international with Nigeria as his player development has progressed.

The Chronicle revealed that the club’s winter talent search is underway as the club’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson looks to form a list of realistic options for manager Steve Bruce during the January transfer window.

Star in the making

Since the arrival of Joelinton in the summer for £40m from Hoffenheim, the Brazilian striker has struggled to settle down in the North East. The former Bundesliga forward has only scored one goal in his first nine Premier League games.

Unbelievably, Osimhen has already scored more goals than Joelinton managed in 28 games last season.

The Brazilian scored seven goals and five assists in 25 starts and three appearances as a substitute. With the Nigerian currently on eight for his goal tally, the 20-year-old is proving to be more clinical as a striker than Newcastle’s No.9.

As both players tower over 6 feet tall, Osimhen has the ability to step in and become the number one striker at the club, while Joelinton could benefit from becoming the facilitator rather than the leading goalscorer.

Having the pressure of being the Toon’s number one supplier of goals, the Brazilian could be better off without the weight of expectation from Newcastle fans on his shoulders.

Man City fans react to Trevor Sinclair’s media agenda comments on talkSPORT

Manchester City fans have joined Trevor Sinclair in stating that there is a media agenda against the club after the John Stones incident with Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard was seen screaming at Stones to get ready as reports across the UK seem to suggest that there is friction between the two.

Guardiola was visibly angry with the centre-back, but Stones told BT Sport after the game (as quoted by The Mirror): “I had them [shin pads] on but I just needed to fix them up properly. Time is of the essence and that’s what he wanted.”

Fans have been quick to jump in on the story and state that there is a slight bend in the approach to their coverage. Certain fans believe that the media “does not like Pep and City”, whilst another supporter claimed it is a “worldwide agenda”.

Sinclair told talkSPORT: “Anything that Pep does or anything that Manchester City players do, the media are all over them,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s a story. That’s why I’m saying there’s some kind of agenda.”

In truth, it was a nothing story, as Guardiola has shown many times down the years to be of the aggressive sorts.

Shouting at his players to get ready as an injured man leaves the pitch is an everyday occurrence for any manager. The boss will ultimately want his players stripped and ready to go as soon as possible.

Perhaps if this wasn’t City, it would not have been covered the way it has.

At least, that’s what some City fans believe…

Aston Villa fans respond to Jack Grealish injury latest

According to journalist Matt Maher, who writes for the Express & Star, Aston Villa will be without Jack Grealish for tonight’s EFL Cup game with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 24-year-old had to be replaced in the latter stages of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City having picked up a calf issue.

However, according to Maher, whilst the Englishman will miss out against Wolves, he could be fit to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Grealish has been in impressive form for Villa at the start of the 2019/20 campaign – scoring four times and contributing four assists in 12 appearances.

And the midfielder had not missed a minute of Premier League action for Dean Smith’s side until he was replaced in the final exchanges against City.

It is doubtful whether Grealish would have been included against Wolves even if he were fit, but it would be big news if the skipper missed out against Liverpool.

Zinedine Zidane could prosper from Real Madrid’s January transfer stance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Even though they were linked to a number of different targets already, it seems that Real Madrid won’t be splashing the cash in the upcoming transfer window, as per new reports coming from AS.

While that’s likely to come as a minor disappointment to supporters, this could still be a good thing for Zinedine Zidane’s squad.

On the chalkboard

As we approach the opening of the January transfer window, rumours start pilling up.

And this is especially true for the biggest European clubs who are always on the hunt to add to their squad with mega-signings, if reports are to be believed.

Of course, Real Madrid are definitely one of those clubs but it seems that Florentino Perez, their president, has decided to “cancel” the winter market and skip it entirely, giving Zidane the chance to make something out of the squad they assembled last summer.

And even though this Real Madrid team does need reinforcement in certain areas, this should be seen as a positive because it could give the Frenchman a chance to solve one of his key issues of the ongoing campaign.

Finding the perfect formula

Zidane and the troubles of finding his starting XI are nothing particularly new.

After all, this issue seems to be a persisting one that has haunted the Frenchman ever since the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign.

And unfortunately for Real Madrid, it’s something he still hasn’t been able to solve to this day.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

In fact, the game against Galatasaray in the Champions League saw the Frenchman use his 12th unique lineup in as many games the Galacticos played until that point.

Clearly, injuries and suspension have played a part in that but it’s still quite a big problem.

Adding new players to that squad mid-season, however, could potentially unbalance it even more.

But with Zidane getting a full season to work with the players that he already has at his disposal, he should have enough time to find the perfect formula he’s been searching for all along.

After all, the Galacticos have spent quite a lot of money on signings already and there is definitely quality in that squad.

Getting them to gel and dance to Zidane’s tune are the details that are currently missing and that sort of thing cannot really be fixed with new people joining them.

If anything, that would make the Frenchman’s job that much more difficult at this particular point in time.

So looking at it from that point of view, this transfer update might still be a blessing in disguise for Los Blancos.

Let’s see if Zidane can make the best of it.

Leeds fans want Kiko Casilla sacked if he’s found guilty of racism

Leeds United fans on Twitter have shown great morals over the past 24 hours as they’ve made it clear what they want to happen to Kiko Casilla if he is found guilty of racially abusing Jonathan Leko.

The goalkeeper has been charged for the incident, and with two Charlton players backing up the claim things don’t look good for the former Real Madrid man.

If he is found guilty, supporters have made it clear that they want to distance themselves from the goalkeeper as they’ve called for him to be sacked.

You can’t help but admire the fanbase’s attitude towards racism. Casilla has been one of Leeds’ most important players this term, but they aren’t willing to back him if he is found guilty of what he is accused of.

Whether or not Casilla is found guilty or not remains to be seen but with a 12 game ban possibly awaiting the Spaniard, it doesn’t bode well.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Crystal Palace scout Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, but they shouldn’t sign him

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Calciomercato, Crystal Palace are ‘following’ Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, who is enjoying a decent campaign with the German side.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the three-cap Netherlands international has found the back of the net eight times in all competitions for Wolfsburg this season, including five goals in ten Bundesliga games.

The forward, who is a shade under 6 foot 6, has been likened to Edin Dzeko by the official Bundesliga website, who detail that Weghorst’s excellent hold-up play, tireless work-rate and willingness to pass to teammates in better positions is vastly similar to the former Manchester City striker’s playing style.

The 27-year-old also has three assists this season, and appears to be a real powerhouse of a frontman.

Two reasons why Palace should avoid a move

At first glance, it doesn’t seem like a terrible idea to sign Weghorst given the aforementioned detail.

However, there are two reasons why the south Londoners should steer clear of a deal.

Firstly, this article by The Athletic reveals that Palace chairman Steve Parish and Sporting Director Dougie Freedman are keen to bring in players who are in their early 20s, with a view to the club’s future.

“The sporting director, Dougie Freedman, and chairman, Steve Parish, were also acutely aware of the relatively hefty average age of the squad. There is a desire to bring in more players in their early 20s with an eye to the future.”

With that transfer vision in mind, it would be contradictory to go and sign a striker who is three years away from his 30th birthday – of all the players in Palace’s first-team squad, only Max Meyer, Wilfried Zaha, Jeffrey Schlupp and the injury-stricken Connor Wickham are under the age of 28.

The second reason is the fact that the south Londoners simply can’t afford to take anymore gambles on players with no Premier League experience.

For example, Alexander Sorloth looked like an exciting addition when he signed from FC Midtjylland back in January 2018, having scored 15 goals in 26 games prior to joining the Eagles.

However, the Norway international scored just once in 20 games before being shipped out on loan.

Palace already have Christian Benteke and Wickham in their ranks, both of whom have failed to score this term, while previous forwards of theirs such as Kevin Doyle, Shola Ameobi, Patrick Bamford and Yaya Sanogo failed miserably – having scored just ten times in 11 Premier League games this season, Palace can’t afford to gamble on a player with no proved pedigree in England and be left burdened with another flop.

Manchester United fans slate Andreas Pereira ahead of his 50th appearance

Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion was a special one for Andreas Pereira, not just because he got a goal and victory.

While there could be a bit of debate about whether the strike was his, due to the big deflection it took on its way into the net, it is set in stone that this was his 50th appearance for the Red Devils:

However, Man United supporters were not so enthusiastic about this landmark ahead of kick-off, feeling that this is a sign of how far their club has fallen down the years, deeming him as not good enough.

The 23-year-old has become a regular feature this season though, starting 10 Premier League games and coming off the bench once.

His performance in the game perhaps backs up the point the fans made, as he was dispossessed 4 times and only managed a pass success rate of 72%.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the landmark, including posts from critical Man United fans, can be seen below:

Leeds fans praise Stuart Dallas after impressing for Northern Ireland vs Netherlands

Stuart Dallas played the entire match as Northern Ireland drew with the Netherlands on Saturday, and many Leeds fans have been quick to lavish him with praise.

In typical Dallas fashion he fulfilled a number of roles on the night, starting off at right-back before taking up a more advanced position as his side looked for a crucial winner.

The Leeds man now has 39 caps for his country, some feat given he had been in and out of the starting line-up for his club side not too long ago, and such an achievement led one fan to suggest he has improved the most of any player since Marcelo Bielsa arrived.

His versatility should certainly be commended as he plays a valuable role in covering multiple positions, something his teammates are unable to do.

The praise he received from the Elland Road faithful shows what high esteem he is now held in, and they will be hoping that he replicates his performance throughout the rest of the season, to give the Whites the best shot at promotion.

Here are some of the reactions to his international display in the Euro 2020 qualifying match.

Crystal Palace fans react after Alexander Sorloth scores quick-fire brace

When you manage to score just one goal in 20 games for your new club, you know your time hasn’t probably worked out for the best. Alexander Sorloth’s spell at Crystal Palace was an entirely forgettable one, making no real impression at Selhurst Park after arriving in a £9m deal from FC Midtjylland back in the winter window in 2018.

The 22-year-old left the club earlier in the summer to join Turkish giants Trabzonspor on loan, where he has fared much better. The striker has scored six goals and provided a further three assists in 11 games, and looks to be a completely different animal.

And on Friday night, he took his new-found confidence into international duty with Norway, striking two goals in the space of three minutes as his country ran out 4-0 winners over the Faroe Islands.

After seeing his remarkable goal-scoring display, Palace fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the forward.

Many supporters of the Eagles questioned why Roy Hodgson simply didn’t give him a chance whilst he was in London, and insisted that his poor run of form for the club was largely down to not playing to his strengths.

Republic of Ireland fans criticise Conor Hourihane’s performance against Denmark

Conor Hourihane featured for 68 minutes as the Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Denmark in Monday night’s Euro 2020 qualification match.

The result means that ROI will need to negotiate the playoffs if they are to book their spot in the finals of next summer’s competition.

Hourihane has featured in five of Aston Villa’s last six Premier League matches, and it was not a surprise that he was named in his country’s first XI on Monday evening.

The 28-year-old was ultimately replaced as the home side looked for a win, though, and a number of the ROI fans have been on social media discussing his performance.

It would be fair to say that the country’s supporters were not overly impressed with what they saw from the central midfielder in the Euro 2020 qualifier.

Indeed, a selection of the Twitter reaction to Hourihane’s display – which was disappointing in the eyes of the Republic of Ireland faithful – is available to view below:
