Tottenham fans have lost all trust in Kieran Trippier

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans have lost all trust in Kieran Trippier after his poor recent run of form.

Spurs face Manchester City on Tuesday night in the Champions League and fans aren’t looking forward to the prospect of their full-back coming up against arguably the most talented wingers in the competition.

Trippier was run ragged by Leroy Sane when the sides met earlier in the season and fans aren’t optimistic about his chances of containing the German this time.

The 16-cap Englishman has put in poor defensive performances on almost a weekly basis, meaning that Spurs fans now see his presence on the pitch as detrimental.

Tottenham’s other right-back option Serge Aurier is unavailable for the Champions League clash with City.

In Aurier’s absence, certain sections of the fanbase were calling for either Moussa Sissoko or Kyle Walker-Peters to start against City whilst others have already accepted that Trippier will start and are resigned to a poor performance.

Here’s what Spurs fans had to say on Twitter…

Lewis Page praises Forster-Caskey for his role in road to recovery

[ad_pod ]

Having not featured in Charlton red – first team or otherwise – since early October, Lewis Page was surely thrilled to get 60 minutes under his belt for the Under-23’s on Tuesday against Burnley and could yet be a part of the Addicks’ push for promotion with four games remaining.

Despite the impressive showings of the deputising Ben Purrington at left-back, the 22-year-old has been sorely missed during yet another extended spell on the sidelines – Page missed a whopping 50 games between March 2017 and March 2018 due to a hamstring injury.

The defender hasn’t been alone this time around, though, with Jake Forster-Caskey, who also featured on Tuesday, on a similar road back to fitness. Page has identified his teammate as a huge help during a testing period:

“It’s been good, we’ve been in the gym most days together. It’s been nice because I’ve been doing a lot of running with him, instead of being on my own like I was last time, which was even tougher, so it was nice to have him alongside me, and to return together today.”

Check out what happened when two of Charlton’s best players faced-off in a game of ‘Splat’ in the video below…

Both players will be chomping at the bit to get back into action and have a part in their team’s final sprint to success although they must be careful not to rush back too soon, as that could see them ruled out for an even longer period of time.

Pointless: Wolves fans react to fascinating Opta fouls stat

[ad_pod ]

Wolves haven’t drawn too many blanks in the Premier League this season but they were halted in their tracks by Brighton last weekend, playing out a 0-0 draw against Chris Hughton’s relegation-threatened men.

Nuno Santo’s team had all of the possession but couldn’t break down a stubborn Seagulls side fighting for their lives.

However, despite the action on the pitch being anything but entertaining, it did conjure up a fascinating statistic, as revealed by Opta on Twitter.

It provoked a fair amount of fan engagement but one supporter called the stat pointless and took issue with the fact the tweet had called their side tame.

Another fan made reference to the fact that Brighton had set up to defend all game, posing the question of how you were meant to foul a fleet of buses.

Other individuals claimed they didn’t need to make any fouls considering Wolves had all of the possession.

The Midlands club are currently on a three-match run without winning as they appear to be suffering from a Wembley hangover.

However, they have the chance to get back to winning ways when they face Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Here’s how fans have been reacting to the stat.

The One That Got Away: Wilfried Zaha

[ad_pod ]

It is rare for a player to speak so candidly on a failed move but so strongly does the disappointment still burn within Wilfried Zaha on his difficult time at Manchester United that he has returned to it often, revealing much.

At the start of this season the Crystal Palace wide-man offered a frank account to Shortlist of his miserable two years in the north-west, describing it as ‘a hell’ endured without any support. He has also spoken elsewhere of the depression this drawn-out mismatch caused and been generally critical of the thirteen time Premier League champions for not giving him a fair chance to succeed.

When weighing up the evidence it’s hard not to accept that the 26-year-old flyer has a series of points.

What fascinates about Zaha’s time at Old Trafford is that so little of his torment derived from footballing matters. Granted he was afforded just two league appearances which barely allowed him time to assimilate his team-mate’s names never mind their movement. Furthermore, for a teenager burdened with huge pressures to perform and justify his fee, those 180 minutes amounts to a criminally scant opportunity.

Yet even so, much of Zaha’s woes derived from misgivings off the pitch rather than anything that occurred on it, with rumours soon doing the rounds that the extravagantly gifted winger had an attitude problem which partly explained his lack of first team action.

These whispers it transpired were entirely erroneous and considering that Zaha was a 19-year-old fish out of water surely it was beholden on the club to publicly dispel them? They didn’t. Soon after came another salacious piece of tittle-tattle with many believing that the reason David Moyes was so reluctant to trial his expensive talent was because Zaha had reportedly slept with the manager’s daughter. Again, this was nothing more than a mischief-making untruth, with the Ivorian later insisting he had never even met the girl in question.

The broader circumstances also hardly helped. In January 2013, with retirement looming for Sir Alex Ferguson, he paid £10m for a player who was routinely tearing apart Championship defences as he sought to freshen up an ageing squad for his successor. It then made perfect sense for Zaha to be immediately loaned back to Palace as they chased promotion.

What this ultimately meant however is that the winger arrived in Manchester to a club thrown into disarray and that situation only worsened as United lurched from one crisis to another. First Moyes hopelessly flailed and then Louis Van Gaal struggled to steady the ship and in their plights they perhaps understandably looked more and more to the familiar coupled with their own signings.

This then was hardly the best environment for a youngster with the weight of the world on his shoulders to find his feet.

If that in some way excuses all concerned and suggests that Zaha’s doomed stint at Old Trafford equates to bad timing it shouldn’t. The bottom line is that Manchester United had in their possession an explosive and direct attacker who has since gone on to win Crystal Palace’s Player of the Year award three years running. They played him twice before prematurely giving up on him and signing Angel Di Maria and Anthony Martial to replace him at a combined cost of over £100m.

United may well marvel now at Zaha’s exploits and think what could have been but they have nobody other than themselves to blame.

Jamal Lowe can be the man to replace Dwight Gayle’s goals next season

[ad_pod ]

According to Football League World, West Brom are keen on a deal for Portsmouth’s Jamal Lowe. The player has been magnificent for Pompey this season and would more than deserve a deal at a club in a higher division.

What’s the word?

Lowe has been in stunning form for the South Coast side this term, finding himself involved in 23 goals, netting 14 goals and laying on nine assists in League One.

Therefore, it’s no surprise to see him attracting the interest of one of the Championships top clubs.

Per, Football League World, the winger is being closely watched by West Brom who had also shown an interest in the player back in January. However, in the same month, Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett, via Portsmouth.co.uk revealed that they’d not received any offers.

The report on Lowe suggests that Albion are keen on the player regardless of whether the Blues go up. They currently sit in third place in League One so there is a real possibility that they may be playing in the Championship come next season.

Can he replace Gayle?

Given Dwight Gayle is a striker, Lowe wouldn’t be an out and out replacement for the Newcastle loanee. However, the 24-year-old is a creative force and knows where the back of the net is, meaning that if the Toon man wasn’t to seal permanent terms, Lowe would be a shrewd investment instead.

If West Brom get promoted then Gayle would be a foolish signing anyway, especially considering his awful record in the Premier League.

Jay Rodriguez has also been in the goals regularly in 2018/19 and has a good history in the top-flight. As a result, he should be the man enlisted in a central role from next season if James Shan successfully navigates his side through the play-offs.

For large periods of the current campaign, West Brom have played with just one striker with either Gayle or Rodriguez shifted out wide.

But by signing Lowe, they’d be able to develop more consistency in who plays in what position. His record this term meanwhile speaks for itself and provides evidence that he could help replace the goals left behind by Albion’s talisman.

‘The little genius defies logic’ – Lineker hits nail on the head for Liverpool

[ad_pod ]Liverpool crashed and burned in Catalonia on Wednesday night despite putting in a decent display at the Nou Camp.To say Barcelona’s 3-0 victory flattered the hosts is a resounding understatement, but Jurgen Klopp’s face told the whole story when the third goal went in.The gulf in class between mere humans and the extraterrestrial Lionel Messi was underlined with Barcelona donning a 2-0 lead, as the Argentine stepped up to whip a deliciously placed free-kick into the top corner of Alisson’s goal.In response to the exquisite strike, Gary Lineker hit the nail on the head with his assessment.

If ever there was a time when Liverpool fans could appreciate Lineker’s sentiments, it was immediately in the aftermath of his second and potentially tie-clinching goal.

The last time Messi faced Liverpool was in 2007, when he failed to score or assist in a two-legged tie which the Reds eventually won on away goals.

‘The little genius defies logic’ was a statement which certainly didn’t apply back then but, after years of avoiding the magician on the European stage, the otherworldly lexicon field which he commands across the football media has never been more pertinent to Liverpool fans.

They saw his logic-defying genius in all its glory last night, and it may well prove to be the difference between the two sides across the two legs.

Ander Herrera posts farewell message on Instagram

The 29-year-old’s contract is up and United chose not to renew his deal, leading to outrage from some fans.

Herrera’s time at Manchester United has to be considered a success. He won three trophies, made 190 appearances and scored 20 goals during his time at the club.

Herrera is a grafter and he is loved by supporters for his work-ethic and desire.

In his time at Manchester United he man-marked Eden Hazard out of a game, spat on the Manchester City badge, won Player of the Year in the 2016/17 season and also scored the winner in last seasons FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

There was a point where some United fans wanted him to be made captain because he clearly understood what it meant to play for a club of Manchester United’s stature and he played every game like it was his last for the club.

The Spaniard may not be the most creative player but his work-rate and commitment have always shone through and, if a few other players had the same attitude as Herrera, United would not find themselves in their current situation.

Herrera is looking likely to sign for PSG and United will have to find a way to replace his passion and bite in the midfield if they are to have any chance of competing for the top-four next season.

Absolute rock: West Brom fans pay tribute to Ahmed Hegazi

[ad_pod ]West Bromwich Albion recorded a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the second leg of their Championship playoff semi-final at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night. The Baggies lost the resulting penalty shootout, though, and are now facing another season of Championship football. It will be a very interesting summer transfer window for the club, with a number of players expected to depart and indeed arrive. One of those who could leave is Ahmed Hegazi. The 28-year-old has had an impressive season for the Baggies and he was brilliant on Tuesday night.Indeed, according to WhoScored, Hegazi made eight tackles and won three aerial duels against Villa, with on-loan Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham struggling to make his mark for the visitors.

It was a frustrating finish to a good performance from Albion, and a number of their supporters were keen to pay tribute to Hegazi.

Transfer Focus: Leeds looking to loan Harrison again before spending big

[ad_pod ]

According to an article in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United want Jack Harrison back on loan again next season.

This comes just a few days after it was reported that it would take a bid in the region of £20 million to bring the winger back to Elland Road permanently.

Tried and tested

With Marcelo Bielsa’s system being so intricate and unique, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he wants players in his squad who know what he want.

Harrison proved last season that he is more than capable of playing in the Argentine’s pressing style as he played 39 games for the Whites in 2018/19.

His goal contribution numbers aren’t quite what you’d want from a player who is reportedly on £51,000-a-week at the Premier League champions, but aged just 22 there is time for that side of his game to grow.

Buying some time

With last week’s reports placing a £20 million price tag on the former NYCFC man, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Leeds want to pursue another loan deal instead.

The Sun’s article stated that the Whites were interested in a permanent deal for the wide player, but at that price, of course, finances were going to be an issue.

Another year on loan at the Yorkshire club allows Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta to buy themselves some time. If they are promoted next year that £20 million figure becomes a drop in the ocean due to the money promotion to the Premier League brings with it.

The owner has recently hinted at a spending spree if the club does make it to the top flight next season, and Harrison would undoubtedly be near the top of his shopping list.

If they can bring the City youngster back for another year, it gives him even more time to develop under Bielsa and learn how to optimise his skills to fit the system the Argentine is implementing at Elland Road.

Crystal Palace eye Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Crystal Palace are one of four Premier League clubs keeping a close eye on Liverpool’s Harry Wilson with a view to a swoop this summer.

The 22-year-old has been on fire during his temporary spell with Derby this season and has been a crucial part of the Rams’ hugely successful campaign. Regardless of whether Frank Lampard’s side achieve promotion at Wembley Stadium on Monday, Premier League football in 2019/20 is at Wilson’s fingertips.

What’s the word?

Well, The Sun reports that the Eagles may have to compete with Bournemouth, Wolves and bitter rivals Brighton for the winger’s services – a selection of suitors that suggests he has had a phenomenal season in the Championship – while Derby are also keen to keep him at Pride Park if they secure promotion.

Liverpool will hold out for £25m if any of the aforementioned clubs want to sign him permanently, although they will reportedly be open to another loan move as well, with the player unlikely to find a way into the Reds’ first team.

Losing Wilson next year would be a devastating blow to Derby, but not nearly as devastating as the exit Palace may suffer this summer – star man Wilfried Zaha could be allowed to leave and, if the Ivorian does indeed head out the door, the Eagles will need to get a new winger in. While Wilson doesn’t have the twinkle toes of Zaha, he does have the outrageous, long-range shooting of Andros Townsend.

Wonderful Wilson

The Welshman scored plenty of wonderful efforts from distance in 2018/19 , including a spectacular free-kick that beat David De Gea when the Rams knocked out Manchester United in the FA Cup’s third round.

Which player with “no potential” has just been named Crystal Palace’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video below…

The number seven chalked up 15 strikes and six assists in 48 games across all competitions, averaging out at 0.44 goal contributions per game – a solid output for a player who still has plenty of room to improve.

It’s unclear as to whether Palace would be willing to cough up the £25m required to bring Wilson to Selhurst Park permanently but assuming he will not be a like-for-like swap for Zaha, who plays on the opposite side to the Welshman, then Townsend will have a job to hold onto his right wing berth – both are left-footed and are lethal when allowed to cut inside.
