West Ham must resist Balotelli urge

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

David Gold and David Sullivan simply have to avoid the pull of signing Mario Balotelli this summer.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the former Manchester City and Liverpool striker has been offered to the club after his contract at Marseille expired.

Now, one feels that this might be a classic piece of Hammers transfer activity.

Balotelli is a recognisable name; he has played for major European clubs; he has Premier League experience; he would sell shirts.

And yet, quite frankly, he’s nothing short of a bad influence.

He has been through a laundry list of genuinely astonishing behaviour, from setting his own bathroom on fire with fireworks to allegedly paying a restaurant owner to drive a moped into the sea.

West Ham are desperate to sign a striker, of course they are. They have lost Marko Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG and have allowed both Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll to leave the club. Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill are the sole striking survivors.

There is, of course, a case to be made for this deal but you won’t find it here.

Balotelli has had his chance in the Premier League and it was categorised by peaks – the majority of his time at City – and troughs – his four-goal spell at Liverpool.

And Arnautovic’s departure should teach both Gold and Sullivan a lesson.

The Austria international was an equally controversial figure and twice asked to leave, doing so firstly in January.

Bringing in another firebrand, another figure who cannot be trusted to keep his name out of the headlines from one day to the next makes precious little sense.

The answer has to be a rather firm no to the representatives who have reached out to the Hammers; Balotelli cannot be allowed to bring his brand of controversy to east London.

Arsenal have missed Sven Mislintant’s presence this summer

[ad_pod ]

Winning a football match with ten men is hard, isn’t it? As is trying to play a game of doubles tennis with just three people. Or trying to play chess on your own.

Park this thought for now.

One club whose fanbase is certainly feeling confused right now is Arsenal.

With an owner who’s situated miles from north London and aiming to run a self-sustaining model, the Gunners are having to endure the punishment of missing out on the top four and losing the Europa League final by entering the summer transfer window with a limited budget.

While missing out on last season’s targets may be forgivable – especially considering Unai Emery has had just one season in the job – the failure to invest in the squad and better the crop for next season seems unacceptable.

If this wasn’t clear throughout social media and fan reactions, the open letter to the Kroenke’s has left spectators in no doubt.

This time last year the Gunners had secured all their targets in preparation for the new season. Sokratis, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner had all agreed moves to the Emirates almost a month before the new campaign kicked off – and this all occurred during a World Cup summer.

With this all in mind, the Gunners’ faithful are right to demand answers and feel frustration towards the lack of activity at the club. Gabriel Martinelli, 18, a youngster with potential but not expected to have a first-year impact – though it’s worth remembering that most thought the same of Guendouzi – is the only player to arrive thus far.

A summer that promised much change has seen failed bids for Wilfried Zaha and Kieran Tierney, with Arsenal simultaneously failing to shake off their deadwood. This time a year ago though, ex-Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat was still in the job, and the fact there is a distinct lack of activity in his absence is absolutely no coincidence.

Arsene Wenger was under no illusions about the understanding and knowledge of the scouting market that Mislintat possesses.

Quoted from Arsenal’s official website, Wenger welcomed the German’s arrival stating: “We are delighted that Sven is joining us. Identifying and developing talent is a core part of our philosophy and Sven has an outstanding track record over many years.

“We look forward to him taking our existing recruitment approach forwards.”

This was the first step towards a restructuring at Arsenal, which would see the appointments of Raul Sanllehi as Head of Football Relations before his promotion to Head of Football, with Vinai Venkatesham becoming the Managing Director of the club after Ivan Gazidis’ departure to AC Milan.

Arsene Wenger was the next to leave as Arsenal dropped the role of manager within their structure and instead looked to appoint a Head Coach.

Mislintat’s work with Arsenal reaped almost immediate rewards. His contacts from his time at Dortmund presumably helped the club to land Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sokratis, while Guendouzi and Konstantinos Mavropanos underlined his astute eye for a scarcely known prodigy.

It’s clear that Mislintat’s work was efficient and aggressive, ensuring Arsenal found their targets and strengthened the depth of their squad.

For years they lacked depth and experience in defence, but in came Sokratis and Lichtsteiner. The Gunners lacked grit and tenacity in midfield, but in came Torreira and Guendouzi. The Emirates missed a goal-hungry attacker, but in came Aubameyang.

Of course, in just two windows it’s extreme to credit Mislintat with total and complete praise for the business conducted during his time in north London, but equally it would be naive to underestimate the value of his presence.

When you compare last year’s window to this one, the Gunners are five first-team players short in recruitment, and it’s the fact no business is yet to be complete this summer that underlines how hard Milsintat’s absence has been felt.

However, hope is not lost. In an enlightening interview Josh Kroenke, he responded to the Arsenal fans’ open letter and confronted their issues (for the most part).

One particular quote should be of real interest to supporters: “There’s been a lot of heavy lifting over the last 12 to 14 months. We have an entirely new structure that we’re really excited about.

“The final piece of the puzzle, as Raul (Sanllehi) said so elegantly in the release a few weeks ago, was our technical director in Edu. I’m really excited about his appointment.”

Edu’s appointment was delayed by his other commitments, and while his job title may not match that of Mislintat’s, the quote from Kroenke loosely suggests that Edu could fill the void left by the departed German.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence then that the transfer market seems to be throwing up Arsenal news with increasing regularity. Reports claim Dani Ceballos and William Saliba are expected to sign for the club soon – pertinently, this news arrives just weeks after Edu’s return.

Mislitant’s departure may have been detrimental to Arsenal’s summer transfer plans, but it seems Arsenal have found their man to steer the ship this summer.

As said at the beginning of the piece, winning a football match with ten men is hard.

Evidently, identifying targets and completing deals without everyone in place to make it happen is equally as challenging.

The elusive “final piece” looks to have finally arrived, and while Arsenal’s window has been a slow burner thus far, they could make a sprint finish now that the appropriate foundations are in place.

Aston Villa fans are fine with news that Aaron Tshibola can leave the club for free

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa are expected to begin trimming down their squad following this summer’s upheaval in which no more than ten new signings have walked through the door at Villa Park.

One player expected to be culled is Aaron Tshibola with The Daily Mail reporting the club have told the midfielder he can leave the club on a free transfer. He has spent the previous two seasons on loan at MK Dons and Kilmarnock.

The 24-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £5m following his impressive performances for Reading in the Championship. Tshibola has only gone on to play a total of ten matches in claret and blue, scoring once.

A number of fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the news with one claiming he forgot the player was still at the club, labelling him abysmal whilst another supporter offered similar sentiments, questioning who he actually was.

Others believed it was about time, stating that Tshibola wasn’t even Sunday league standard. One member of the Villa faithful was willing to pay for his taxi fee from Villa Park to wherever he may end up – The Daily Mail believe there is interest from Darren Moore’s Doncaster Rovers in League One.

Newcastle now have all the tools for Steve Bruce to go old-school

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Newcastle signed local lad Andy Carroll on Thursday, and the manager who once proclaimed “I’m not really into tactics” may now have all the tools to play the good old-fashioned 4-4-2.

On the chalkboard

It is not known what formation Bruce will play in his debut campaign on Tyneside. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has varied his tactics in pre-season, testing a three-at-the-back similar to Rafael Benitez’s, while also deploying a 4-5-1, or effectively a 4-2-3-1.

However, looking back to an article from The Guardian way back in 2011, in which the famous “not really into tactics” quote surfaced, the Magpies boss is described as “unashamedly old school” and unable to influence the game tactically.

With that in mind, the arrival of the 6 foot 4 Carroll has us wondering if Bruce has his sights set on an “unashamedly old school” style of play, once Carroll is fully fit.

[ad_pod ]

The perfect partnership

A traditional target man and a skilful speedster, one little one large, it’s the classic centre-forward one-two punch.

Think Emile Heskey and Michael Owen, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch, or even Carroll himself together with Luis Suarez during their time at Liverpool.

In Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey, Bruce has two tough-tackling midfielders with good work rates and an eye for a pass. In Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron he has two wingers with the pace to burn past defenders and whip balls into the box.

And now, with the arrival of Carroll, he has the perfect target man to partner Joelinton in a 4-4-2.

The Brazilian won 2.3 aerial duels per game last term, which isn’t too shabby in itself, while Carroll averages a whopping 6.2 aerial wins each match throughout his career.

Joelinton also has uniquely well-rounded capabilities with and without the ball though, bearing a striking resemblance to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, dribbling, creating and dropping into space, as well as pitching in with goals.

Pairing the 22 year-old up with Carroll then seems a no-brainer. Carroll is power personified, while his new partner in crime does a little bit of everything, and both of them know how to get on the scoresheet.

We’ve had Wenger-ball. We’ve had Sarri-ball. Is it time the Premier League’s most “unashamedly old school” manager brings us Bruce-ball?

Celtic signing Rico Henry as a replacement for Kieran Tierney is a big risk

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are looking to bring in Rico Henry should Kieran Tierney depart for Arsenal, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Brentford left-back Henry has been earmarked as a potential signing by Neil Lennon should he lose Tierney to Arsenal this summer, per the report. With the English window closing on Thursday we will soon know if the Scot will be a Celtic player for the coming season.

The Bees defender would cost a sum of £7m, according to the report, in what would be a significant outlay for the Celts, even if they do get the £25m that they expect for the services of Tierney.

Celtic have one recognised left-back at the club in Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo, who himself has only just arrived this summer in a £3m transfer from Austrian side Rapid Vienna.

A big gamble

At £7m Henry would be a massive outlay for the club. The Bhoys have brought in Christopher Jullien this summer already and even with a potential windfall through the sale of Tierney, it would be unusual to see such large sums spent by the club in one window – they have not eclipsed £15m of spending in a single window in over a decade.

Whenever the Hoops have spent these sort of sums in the past it has tended to be on central players who will improve the spine of the team, with spending much more reserved for those on the periphery of the game. It would be unusual to see such an outlay on a left-back, but given the swollen fees in football, it wouldn’t be completely staggering.

If he were to be brought in for a fee as big as £7m you’d have to assume he’d want to become one of the top earners at the club. This wouldn’t be ridiculous fur such a big transfer but with a new multi-million-pound left-back already at the club, it would be strange to invest even more wages (and a big fee) into another left-sided defender.

In Bolingoli-Mbombo, Celtic have an expensive acquisition who will expect to play a prominent role, especially if Tierney finds pastures new. The 24 year-old has also made a good impression on his new fans early on.

It would be wise for Lennon to look elsewhere if Tierney goes, perhaps at an experienced free agent who can support Bolingoli-Mbombo, because at £7m, Henry requires a massive outlay for someone that wouldn’t even be a guaranteed first-choice in the position.

Aston Villa fans puzzled with Adrian Durham’s comments on their Premier League hopes

[ad_pod ]Aston Villa’s Premier League season began with the tough test of travelling to Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur and despite the unflattering 3-1 scoreline, they gave a good account of themselves.Dean Smith’s men held their own for the best part of an hour with John McGinn’s ninth-minute strike looking to be enough to cause the shock of the weekend. But those hopes were soon put to bed by a thunderbolt finish from Spurs’ record signing Tanguy Ndombele before Harry Kane netted a brace in the final four minutes.talkSPORT discussed the game on Tuesday…

‘Drive’ presenter Adrian Durham’s comments have sparked quite the reaction from members of the Villa fanbase.

One supporter responded by claiming he would be proved wrong as Tyrone Mings is always incredible and similarly another said that we will see who is laughing come May, wanting people to keep underestimating the team.

Others labelled the presenter idiotic and clueless following his comments.

Newcastle fans react as Dummett shows support for coaching staff

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has hit back at the notion he criticised the club’s coaching staff, but the Toon Army aren’t buying his latest statement.

It’s been a tumultuous summer at St. James’ Park, and two losses from two games isn’t exactly the best way to calm the tension on Tyneside.

The Magpies were comfortably beaten by Norwich on Saturday, and both Dummett and Yoshinori Muto appeared to criticise the actions of Steve Bruce and his coaching staff.

Dummett had said the side’s warm-up “wasn’t right”, while Muto commented on the isolation both he and Joelinton suffered at Carrow Road.

Now though, the Wales international has tweeted an explanation, clearing things up and claiming that his comment was simply in reference to the players’ effort, which wasn’t good enough. He backed the squad and coaching staff in unison, saying they must “stick together”.

Of course, the Toon Army will take any chance they can get to bash Bruce, and this is just another stick for them to beat him with.

While Dummett seems to baring his soul and revealing the squad’s feelings and support for the gaffer, his message has been met with loads of scepticism.

Just have a look at the Twitter reactions down below…

Marco Silva praises one aspect of Everton’s midweek showing but his team need much more

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Marco Silva was impressed with his players in Everton’s League Cup victory over Lincoln City, but they will need to show much more if they are to achieve anything this season.

What did he say

Everton fell behind after 21 seconds against the Imps and although the game was level with 20 minutes to spare, Silva was able to rely on new signing Alex Iwobi to nudge his side in front.

The Toffees eventually ran out 4-2 winners, leaving their manager satisfied with what he labelled a professional performance, implying that all that matters in the cup is a victory.

Speaking to Evertontv, Silva said: “Our team showed one important thing in my opinion – apart from the attitude, commitment and desire – we showed personality.

“We respected ourselves, we respected our fans, we respected the competition.

“It was a good performance in some moments. But, for me, the most important thing was our players were serious, they showed they are very good professionals and they won the game.”

There were further positives for the Portuguese man to take, with his side finally displaying an attacking threat by scoring four, whilst new signings Moise Kean and Djibril Sidibe were handed their first starts, allowing them to get valuable minutes under their belt.

Lucas Digne also continued to impress with a goal and an assist, but there are areas which still require improvement and certain persisting trends, namely their lack of creativity.

More than spirit needed for top-six

There has been much speculation over the summer about Everton’s chances of breaking into the top 6, but so far they have continued to underperform in attack, as they did for much of last season in which they scored only 54 league goals. Pertinently, that was 11 goals below the lowest tally of a top-six club.

Despite playing against a team two divisions below, Everton were uninspiring for large spells. It took until the 81st minute for the Toffees to score from open play and that served to intensify the feeling that they are yet to discover the type of fluid attacking form they’ll need to breach the top-six.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Showing personality, as Silva alludes to, will only get this Everton team so far. Their forward players lack the quality of their rivals in the top-six – Arsenal’s willingness to let Iwobi join the Toffees suggests as much.

Too often they will struggle to break down teams, as they have shown in each of their matches so far, and that is what will separate them from the top teams.

Kean and Iwboi have shown glimpses of his quality while Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison are proven at the club, but are this quartet even as good as the attacking quartets West Ham and Leicester have to offer?

Time will tell but Silva will need much more than spirit to take the Merseysiders in the right direction this season.

Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane facing uncertain future according to pundit

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has questioned the decision to omit Conor Hourihane from the starting line-up following his recent exploits in the Carabao Cup.

What’s he said?

The Birmingham-based club faced Crewe Alexandra last week, and manager Dean Smith rung the changes to give game time to players on the peripheral of his starting XI.

They won the match 6-1 with Hourihane managing to bag a brace from midfield while the likes of Marvelous Nakamba, Keinan Davis and Ezri Konsa all featured.

At the weekend, they returned to Premier League action and were defeated 1-0 by Crystal Palace, their third loss in four Premier League matches.

Hourihane, who started the opening game against Tottenham Hotspur, appeared to do no wrong in that game and proved he’s still raring to go in midweek, but that wasn’t enough to garner a starting spot at the weekend.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bent said:

“Hourihane must be thinking: ‘What is going on here?’

“Yes, he got off the bench but he scored two goals in the week. He must be thinking what does he need to do to be starting, but they’re going to need all hands on deck.”

What else can he do?

The Republic of Ireland international has been at the club since 2017 – making 114 appearances in the claret and blue, but his game time since gaining promotion to the top-flight has been very much sparse, thus making his future unclear.

He was trusted with the reigns in defensive midfield against the Champions League finalists where he recorded an 88% passing success rate and a match rating of 7.06, per WhoScored. His only start of the season so far in the league.

Then to go and do the job asked of him last week in the Carabao Cup by scoring two goals as well as winning the match, he must feel hard done by to have not been selected for the Palace fixture.

They lost another match, and in midfield, it was only really John McGinn, who could come away with any plaudits, scoring a 7.7 as WhoScored’s star man.

Summer arrival Douglas Luiz has only shown his quality in small glimpses whilst Jack Grealish was particularly poor, scoring a rating of just 6.3.

There’s really not much more the 28-year-old can do other than take his chance, if and when he gets it.

Southampton’s fortunes with 3-man defence & 4-2-2-2 compared: Which works best?

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

In just four Premier League games so far this season, Southampton have already used three different systems under Ralph Hasenhuttl, and with contrasting results to say the least.

What were they?

In the opening two fixtures against Burnley and Liverpool, the former RB Leipzig boss adopted a 3-4-3 formation and a 3-5-2 system respectively, in which Ryan Bertrand and Yan Valery started as wing-backs with Nathan Redmond and Che Adams as a two-man strike-force in the latter – Danny Ings joined them up top against his former side Burnley.

In the two most recent outings against Brighton and Manchester United, Hasenhuttl switched things up to a 4-2-2-2 system – supposedly his preferred formation according to Transfermarkt – in which a common four-man backline was adopted with two central midfielders, two wide attackers and two central strikers.

How did they get on?

Well, the two games with three-at-the-back ended miserably with no points amassed, five goals conceded and one scored.

The two fixtures using 4-2-2-2 saw the Saints record a win over Brighton and grab a point against Manchester United.

Whilst it would be easy to say that the 4-2-2-2 system is better based on the aforesaid, let’s put the games under the microscope a bit more.

The South Coast side’s games against Liverpool and Manchester United don’t properly reflect the two systems given the quality of the opposition, so with that said, let’s look at the Burnley and Brighton games more closely.

The Saints embarked on just six dribbles against the Clarets, whilst being far more adventurous against the Seagulls having completed 10.

There was also a huge rise in the amount of tackles – just seven were completed against Sean Dyche’s men, whilst 19 were made at the Amex Stadium.

One notable difference from the two games is that Southampton’s completed dribbles against Brighton came from more dangerous areas in the final third, whereas their dribbles at Turf Moor came from relatively harmless positions out wide – despite the wing-backs, it seems as if Hasenhuttl’s 3-4-3 didn’t offer the width he would’ve hoped for in the right areas.

The bottom line appears to be that the Saints looked far more narrow and unimaginative in a 3-4-3 formation, where there was little space in between the lines for their danger-men such as Redmond to run into and roam around in.

You could also argue, based off those numbers, that the additional midfielder made things too cluttered with little space to manoeuvre in, but somehow still lacked the solidity it should’ve provided with five goals conceded in two games using it.

Hasenhuttl and Southampton seem much more comfortable in the 4-2-2-2 system, to say the least.
