Gers receive Siriki Dembele boost

According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers may need to pay just £500,000 if they want to lure Siriki Dembele to Ibrox.

Dembele update

The Gers are said to be interested in taking the 24-year-old north of the border, but it had previously been reported that Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony was looking for £3m for the forward (Rangers News).

However, it has now been revealed that Ross Wilson and co may only need to pay £500,000 for his services, which represents an 83% reduction.

Absolute bargain

This could well be an absolute bargain for the Gers. The London native has been in terrific form in League One so far this term, scoring five and providing seven assists in 19 games (Transfermarkt). Throughout his career, he has 23 goals and 28 assists in 138 games – solid numbers that the man called “brilliant” towards the end of 2020 by Posh manager Darren Ferguson can improve upon (Evening Express).

There is plenty of interest in his services – Celtic, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Fulham and Crystal Palace have all been mentioned alongside the Gers. However, the lure of Champions League football, a competition in which Steven Gerrard’s side should be participating in next season as they lead the Premiership by a huge 20 points (BBC), could give the 54-time Scottish champions the edge. It remains to be see what the future holds for Dembele.

Rico Henry: West Ham must sign Brentford full-back in January transfer raid

David Sullivan must sanction a January transfer for rumoured West Ham United target Rico Henry amid claims David Moyes snubbed a summer deal for the Brentford full-back.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, Moyes turned away the chance to sign Henry in the off-season after deciding to prioritise the arrival of an additional centre-half.

The Hammers were in contention to sign the 23-year-old amid rival interest from long-term suitors Aston Villa, while more Premier League clubs are poised to express their interest in a mid-season swoop once the winter market opens for business.

Henry joined Brentford for what now appears a bargain £1.5m in 2016, and is expected to follow Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma in sealing lucrative top-flight transfers after the Bees agreed £28m and £25m deals for the pair this summer.

West Ham have scouted Henry to assess his suitability for a move to the London Stadium but chose against submitting an offer ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, only to see the Birmingham-born full-back turn in consistently impressive displays in the Championship.

It remains to be seen if Moyes is more open to a move in the January window or if Sullivan does present a formal offer after West Ham lost first-choice left-back Arthur Masuaku for the foreseeable future following knee surgery.

Forget Johnson, sign Henry

Moyes initially favoured a return to wide defensive duties for Aaron Cresswell following Masuaku’s operation, but failed to see the former England international thrive and turned to academy product Ben Johnson for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Johnson stole the show at home to the Seagulls, yet Moyes can find his long-term solution in Henry and not the natural right-back who “ticks every box”.

Henry has shown throughout the season that he can serve as Moyes’ long-term Masuaku replacement, with the former U20 international offering one goal and two assists from 0.3 shots and 0.7 key balls a game over his 20 Championship outings to date, per SofaScore.

He additionally plays 0.3 accurate crosses, 32.5 accurate passes, makes 0.9 successful dribbles and wins 5.2 duels, while helping to eight clean sheets with 1.3 successful tackles, 1.2 clearances, 0.9 interceptions and commits just 0.4 fouls a game.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank firmly believes the Walsall product, who made his senior debut aged 17, is among the best left-back’s in the second-tier, and he’d certainly be a valuable addition to West Ham in January.

“Is he the best in the division? Others must judge that, but he’s definitely up there among the best,” Frank said, via quotes by The Athletic.

“You always love your own children. He’s one of my 25 sons in my squad. Of course, I absolutely love him.”

O jogador é titular do Timão desde 2013.

Ryan Yates was Forest’s most important player on Wednesday

Nottingham Forest are still unbeaten in the league under Chris Hughton, but three draws in four games under their new manager doesn’t make for the most inspiring start imaginable.

As frustrating as these continuous draws have been, Forest have to feel lucky to have escaped with a point against Luton on Wednesday evening as they navigated half of the match with 10-men.

To make matters worse, the Reds were behind for the majority of the match, falling behind in the 22nd minute before Nicolas Ioannou’s dismissal in the 44th minute left them with a real mountain to climb.

Fortunately, they were able to climb that mountain and one man was responsible for their resilient fight back.

Of course, we’re talking about Ryan Yates.

The midfielder made sure that Forest weren’t affected by the red card as he covered every blade of grass during this game, making four interceptions and winning seven duels throughout the match.

Yates then played a part in the Reds’ equaliser arriving at the back post attempting a diving header that put the Luton Town defender under enough pressure to force him to put it into his own net.

It shouldn’t come as much of a shock to see Yates forcing the issue like this, he has been described by Sabri Lamouchi as one of the Reds’ most important players in the past and commended for his workrate.

“He is strong and he can make a difference. He scored important goals last season — he is always on the move and he can be like a bulldozer,” His former manager said.

The bulldozer analogy is certainly a fitting one after his acrobatic header attempt forced Glen Rea into a mistake that cost the Hatters all three points.

Forest do need to pick up more wins in the coming weeks if they’re going to move up the table, but if Yates keeps playing like that, it shouldn’t be too difficult a task.

Cruzeiro confirma a saída do treinador Mano Menezes

Brighton & Hove Albion: Viktor Gyokeres wanted by Swansea on loan

Brighton striker Viktor Gyokeres is being targeted by Swansea for a potential loan move, according to The Argus.

The media outlet reported that German second tier outfit St Pauli, with whom he was on loan last season, are also interested in taking the 22-year-old back for another campaign.

Sweden international Gyokeres signed for Brighton in January 2018 and has a decent return of 14 goals in 31 appearances for the Seagulls’ under-23 side. However, he has played just five times for Albion’s first team and is still awaiting a Premier League debut.

His loan spell at St Pauli in 2019/20 was a promising one, as he recorded seven goals and four assists in 28 matches, although he did not feature in either of Brighton’s recent friendlies against Chelsea and West Brom.

While Graham Potter has the prolific Neal Maupay to call upon in attack, along with young prospect Aaron Connolly, the Seagulls are in the market for a new striker. They have been touted for a move for Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos in recent days and also embarked on an unsuccessful pursuit for Darwin Nunez, who joined Benfica last week.

That would suggest that Gyokeres is not considered first team material at the Amex Stadium, so another loan exit seems a distinct possibility – and Swansea may well be an ideal destination for him.

It was at the Liberty Stadium that Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster flourished on loan earlier this year, scoring 11 goals in 22 Championship games for Steve Cooper’s side. The manager, who led England to Under-17 World Cup glory in 2017, seems to be well able to get a tune out of rough diamonds and may fancy his chances of doing likewise with Brighton’s Swedish centre-forward.

A move to Swansea would also enable Gyokeres to obtain valuable first-team experience in English football rather than going back to mainland Europe. Also, having finished in the play-offs last term, the Swans seem well placed to make a strong push for promotion to the Premier League this time around.

Therefore, the Welsh city could be the perfect place for the 22-year-old to try and follow in Brewster’s footsteps by having a prosperous loan spell which could hopefully see him then challenge for a fixed spot in Potter’s first team at the Amex.

Tottenham Hotspur: Jermain Defoe insists Spurs should sign ex-Chelsea ace

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back to winning ways after beating Arsenal 2-1 at home, but once again they failed to keep a clean sheet.

Tottenham have started to find some rhythm up front, as they have scored three goals in the past three games.

It is no secret the Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun over the course of the season so far, as one only has to see they have conceded more goals than Arsenal, Sheffield United and Premier League champions Liverpool amongst others.

Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe has urged Tottenham to sign Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake in the summer in an effort to tighten up.

Although they stunned Leicester at the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth are on the brink of relegation, as they find themselves three points adrift of 17th-placed Watford.

Ake has been one of the few standouts in an otherwise bitter season for the Cherries, and has been tipped to move to north London this summer, amid interest from Spurs and Arsenal.

“I would love to see him at Tottenham you know,” Defoe told The Beautiful Game podcast.

“He’s got so much potential. Coming from Chelsea it was difficult to get in the team there. He went to Watford, and Bournemouth paid a big fee for him.

“He’s technically good, Dutch players always are. Scores a lot of goals from set-pieces, he is really brave which is good. One of the nicest guys I’ve met in football, you’d even let him date your sister.

“I would love to see him get to the next level and play in the Champions League. I feel he is that good, I’m sure.”

It is hard to argue with Defoe here, as Ake has once again been one of Bournemouth’s best players this season.

The ex-Chelsea ace, who joined the Cherries for a club record fee, has impressed for Eddie Howe’s side, playing 29 Premier League games so far, making 1.1 tackles per game, averaging 1.2 interceptions, and completing a staggering 5.1 clearances on average (via WhoScored).

Mourinho has worked with him before during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely he will play again this season, after he suffered an injury tackling Jamie Vardy in the huge win over Leicester.

Bournemouth’s precarious position has left them vulnerable to a potential exodus of key players, which Daniel Levy could take full advantage of in the summer.

Ake, 25, has received a higher WhoScored rating overall than Davinson Sanchez, and earned the same as Jan Vertonghen, who seems to be heading out the door at any moment.

However, it is worth remembering Blues boss Frank Lampard could still activate a buy-back clause in his contract as he has defensive problems of his own to worry about.

Tottenham fans, do you think Daniel Levy should sign Nathan Ake in the summer? Let us know down below!

Sunderland: Demetri Mitchell emerges as a potential arrival on Wearside

Former Manchester United youngster Demetri Mitchell has emerged as a potential summer target for Sunderland.

Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson is seeking promotion to the Championship in 2021 and he has already made some shrewd signings, bringing in Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien, whilst Tom Flanagan signed a new deal to remain at the club.

Transfer gossip continues to abound, with a recent transfer link to former Everton defender Luke Garbutt, whose preferred position is at left-back.

While interest in Garbutt has been reported, it has been somewhat countered by a claim from The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson, who has said that former Man United defender Mitchell is gaining interest from the Wearsiders.

The 23-year-old has spent time with Sunderland over the last few days after being released by the Old Trafford club earlier this summer.

Having missed most of the last 12 months through injury, it is reported that Parkinson has handed Mitchell the chance to trial at the Stadium of Light, as per The Northern Echo. The report added that Garbutt is due to make a decision on his immediate future in the coming days.

Mitchell’s injury problems of late could be a concern for Parkinson and may potentially sway him towards Garbutt in a choice between the two players.

However, with the ex-Man United man already being given a chance to impress with a trial, he seems to have the edge on the former Everton player – and with Denver Hume already at the club, there only seems a need for one further left-back option at Sunderland.

Sunderland fans, who would you sign out of Garbutt or Mitchell? Let us know in the comments section below…
