Leeds: Winger hopes may depend on outgoings

Any hopes of Leeds United signing a winger ‘likely rely on one of the understudies moving on’, according to Joe Donnohue.

The lowdown

Club Brugge’s Noa Lang and Manchester United’s Dan James have been identified as potential wide targets for Leeds this summer. A long-standing interest in Ryan Kent could also escalate (via The Athletic’s Phil Hay).

Leeds have spent £26.82million so far in the window, securing the services of Jack Harrison on a permanent deal, landing FC Barcelona’s Junior Firpo and bringing in Kristoffer Klaesson as a back-up for Illan Meslier.

There are still more than three weeks remaining in the transfer window, but Leeds’ Premier League opener against Manchester United on 14 August is creeping closer.

The latest

Donnohue says ‘the feeling is Leeds are not quite done in the transfer market’ and expresses confidence that there is ‘money to spend’ thanks to the Premier League’s broadcast deal.

Regarding a winger, he predicts that the departure of Ian Poveda or Helder Costa on loan could lead to an incoming.

Raphinha and Harrison hold ‘dominance over the wide areas’, so any arrival would likely be seen as cover and competition – the exact roles Poveda and Costa currently occupy.

The verdict

A new winger shouldn’t be the priority for Leeds if there is to be only one more addition.

Ideally they would have stronger back-ups to their excellent first-choice pair, but a bigger concern is in central midfield.

Mateusz Klich’s loss of form in the latter half of last season suggests he might be something of a hindrance to Leeds, who should be harbouring ambitions of European qualification but face stern competition.

Kalvin Phillips meanwhile is in desperate need of an adequate deputy who can allow Marcelo Bielsa to rest his star man occasionally without a major drop-off in quality.

A signing like James or Lang may excite fans, but we don’t feel it should be Victor Orta’s top priority right now.

In other news, another Leeds target has emerged.

Leicester City linked to Ryan Bertrand

Leicester City have reportedly completed the signing of former Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand as they continue to bolster their first-team squad.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Foxes have secured the 31-year-old’s services after extensive negotiations.

He tweeted: “Deal completed and confirmed. Ryan Bertrand will join Leicester on a three-year contract plus option to extend until June 2024. Bertrand will be announced as new Leicester signing in the next days.”

Fans will surely be buzzing

After departing his boyhood club Chelsea back in 2015 in search of regular game time, Bertrand established himself as the first-choice left-back at St. Mary’s, making 240 appearances for Southampton in all competitions.

However, the ex-England international left the Saints on a free transfer last month after his contract expired following a six-year spell on the south coast.

Several top clubs across the continent were credited with an interest in the experienced full-back, but it appears as though the appeal of Europa League football and playing under Brendan Rodgers has been enough to secure Bertrand’s signature for Leicester.

The Midlands outfit have already confirmed the signings of Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare, and news that a third addition is imminent will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.

After narrowly missing out on a Champions League qualification spot for the second consecutive season, Rodgers has wasted no time in strengthening the resources at his disposal.

Although Bertrand may not be the most exciting or glamourous purchase of the summer, his potential arrival represents another piece of astute business in the transfer market from the Leicester hierarchy.

He will fill the gap that Christian Fuchs has left behind following his exit and provide cover and competition for teenage talent Luke Thomas while the highly-rated James Justin continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

By securing Bertrand’s services on a free, Rodgers will be able to focus his relatively modest resources on other, more important areas of the squad, giving Leicester a better chance of finally breaking into the Premier League’s top four.

Liverpool dealt Baumgartner transfer blow

Liverpool target Christoph Baumgartner dropped a transfer hint regarding a potential switch to Anfield this summer.

What’s been said?

In a recent interview with German publication SportBild (via Sport Witness), the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim attacking midfielder suggested that, despite being linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side in the summer transfer window, he has no intention of leaving the Bundesliga team in the near future.

The report went on to state that, even if the 21-year-old was keen on a move to the Premier League this summer, it would take an enormous offer for Sebastian Hoeneß to sanction the attacking midfielder’s sale.

When questioned about his future, Baumgartner said: “I definitely extended my contract in March with the intention of playing here next season. I see the best opportunity here to develop myself further. For me, that means continuous performance at a high level, with even more upward strides.”

Klopp will be gutted

Considering how much potential Baumgartner appears to possess, if the midfielder is indeed unmoved by the idea of a move to Liverpool this summer, it is an outcome that will undoubtedly leave Klopp gutted.

Indeed, over his 31 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim last season, the 21-year-old scored six goals, registered three assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of two shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £19.8m-rated man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Hoeneß’s eighth-best performer in the top flight of German football.

As a result of his impressive campaign in the Bundesliga, Baumgartner earned himself a place in Franco Foda’s Austria squad for Euro 2020, where the midfielder proved a key part of the country’s run to the round of 16, scoring one goal and featuring in all four fixtures.

So, at just 21 years of age, the man Alexander Rosen dubbed a “dangerous” player would appear to be someone with an extremely bright future in the game, however, if the £8.4k-per-week midfielder’s latest comments are anything to go by, this future does not appear to be at Anfield.

Hick excels with marathon knock

A triple hundred from Graeme Hick was the highlight of the second day of the latest round of Frizzell County Championship matches. Hick made an unbeaten 315 (386 balls, 2 sixes, 49 fours) against Durham in the Division Two match at New Road. It enabled him to declare Worcestershire’s first innings on 643 for seven, a lead of 523. It was the highest-ever score by a Worcestershire player at New Road, and surpassed John Crawley’s 272 as the highest score of the season. Durham closed on 50 for no wicket, still 473 behind.A maiden double century by Abdur Razzaq provided another batting exhibition, and enabled Middlesex to rack up 633 for seven against Glamorgan. Razzaq made an unbeaten 203 (2 sixes, 19 fours) and Ed Joyce completed a century as Middlesex’s magnificent batting form continued unabated. Spinners Phil Tufnell and Paul Weekes then bagged three wickets each to put the home side on the rack at 173 for seven. In the First Division, Lancashire took a slender first-innings lead after bowling Kent out for 214. Peter Martin (five for 54) played the starring role, while Paul Nixon was Kent’s top scorer with 49. But Amjad Khan and Mark Ealham have taken three wickets each to put the hosts back under pressure, ending the day on 197 for seven, a lead of just 209.Richard Montgomerie and Matthew Prior helped ensure a healthy lead for Sussex over stragglers Yorkshire. Montgomerie made 78 and Prior 85, and Mark Davis and unbeaten 70 to propel Sussex to 392 all out by stumps, a lead of 137.Graham Wagg (four for 43) precipitated a Somerset collapse at Edgbaston. After being handily placed at 121 for three, the visitors were dismissed for 208, and Dominic Ostler (110*) then consolidated Warwickshire’s position, taking them to 236 for five, a lead of 258, by the close. In the other two Second Division games, Aftab Habib led Essex back from the depths of 100 for six at Gloucester. With help first from Jon Dakin and then from John Stephenson, Habib (66) helped Essex to end the day on 283 for nine, still 100 behind. Ian Harvey (four for 59) and Jonathan Lewis (three for 63) were the main wicket-takers.At Northampton, Nottinghamshire extended their first innings to 489, with Paul Franks making 67. But Mal Loye has kept the hosts in tough, with an unbeaten 105, well supported by David Sales with 61. Their third-wicket partnership is so far worth 186, with Northants 248 for two at stumps.

It is advantage India at Port of Spain

West Indies were struggling at 197/6 at stumps on the second day of their second Test against India being played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. They still trail by 142 runs in the first innings with just four wickets in hand. At close of play, Carl Hooper was unbeaten on 30 while Mervyn Dillon was on six not out. Javagal Srinath was easily the best Indian bowler on view with figures of 16-4-56-3.After bowling India out for 339, the home side got off to a brisk start with Stuart Williams smashing the ball to all parts of the field. His fellow-opener Chris Gayle (13) was the first batsman to be dismissed, falling to a well-laid trap, caught at short cover by Shiv Sunder Das off the bowling of Javagal Srinath. Williams, who struck three consecutive fours off Srinath, was dismissed just before the tea interval, caught bat-pad at short leg by Das off Harbhajan Singh. He made 43 off 62 balls, striking eight boundaries.Ramnaresh Sarwan (35), who came in at his customary No. 3 slot, as always promised so much but failed when he looked set for a big score, caught by Rahul Dravid at slip off Ashish Nehra. This brought together the experienced pair of Brian Lara and Carl Hooper in the middle. Lara looked in ominous form, but fortunately for India was caught behind off Zaheer Khan soon after he reached his half-century. He made 52 off 78 balls, striking half a dozen boundaries.Umpire Daryl Harper has had a nightmare of a Test match; he gave Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1) out leg before off Srinath, when the ball had clearly pitched outside the leg. There was more joy for Srinath in the same over, Junior Murray being trapped plumb in front for a duck. The home team had lost three wickets in the space of ten deliveries, and were struggling at 180/6 at that stage.Hooper and Dillon might have ensured that the West Indies did not suffer any further jolts on the day but there is no denying the fact that the Indians will be calling the shots come Sunday. The tourists find themselves in a strong position thanks largely to some dubious umpiring decisions over the first two days of the Test match. It would take a Herculean effort from Hooper to bail West Indies out of trouble on the third day.Earlier, in the morning, India resuming on 262/4 were bowled out for 339 in the second over after the luncheon break. Sachin Tendulkar, resuming on his overnight score of 113, was the first to go after adding only four more runs in the morning. But not before surviving a very confident shout for lbw off the bowling of Cuffy; umpire Asoka de Silva once again ruling in the batsman’s favour after Tendulkar had padded up to it.The whole of the Caribbean must have wondered about this endless run of bad luck. However, with the very next ball, Cuffy had Tendulkar shuffling back and across, rapped on the pads. The ball would have gone on to hit the middle stump. Umpire de Silva after a dramatic pause put his finger up and Tendulkar was finally dismissed for 117 (260 balls, 14 fours).Ratra making his Test debut couldn’t do much with the bat, caught behind of Cuffy for a duck, which also made him his counterpart Junior Murray’s 100th victim as a wicket keeper. Harbhajan Singh too was dismissed for a duck, caught by Cuffy at long leg off the bowling of Sanford. Zaheer Khan (5) played and missed too many times outside the off and was finally bowled by Sanford after playing all over a full length delivery. India were 298/8 at that stage.Srinath and Laxman staged a mini-recovery adding 41 runs for the ninth wicket. Soon after lunch, though, Marlon Black trapped Javagal Srinath (18) plumb in front of the wicket. Last man Ashish Nehra lasted only three balls, caught by Hooper at second slip for a duck. Laxman was left stranded 69 not out (123 balls, 11 fours). Black finished strongly with figures of 17.5-7-53-3, while Cuffy (30-12-49-2) and Sanford (29-5-111-3) also bowled well before lunch to share the remaining four Indian wickets that fell on the day.

Pundit says Fonseca would be underwhelming new Spurs manager

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with several top-class managers, however they have all eventually been ruled out of taking the hot-seat in north London.

Someone who does appear keen though is Paulo Fonseca, with The Guardian reporting on Monday he has agreed to become their new manager, and former Spurs cup final hero Paul Stewart believes that would be an underwhelming appointment.

Fonseca has been in discussions with Spurs about succeeding Jose Mourinho, the man who has replaced him at Roma this summer, and it was a mixed season for Fonseca at Roma as he guided them to a Europa League semi-final but could only see his side finish seventh in Serie A.

There had been a lot of talk about former boss Mauricio Pochettino returning, however having just joined PSG earlier this year it proved to be a difficult deal to sort out and thus, that has led Daniel Levy to the tail end of his list of potential managers.

Spurs are in clear need of a rebuild with star players potentially leaving as well as an ageing backline, so it would be a huge job for Fonseca but before he’s even been given the job. Stewart believes that it would be an underwhelming appointment and he explained why, exclusively to Football FanCast:

“To say the least, it would be underwhelming. Fans thought that Pochettino might have come back and a lot were hoping that it would come to fruition because there are not a lot of options out there.”

When Roma faced Manchester United in the Europa League semi-final, it started well with the Italians looking dangerous in the final third and on the counter-attack, however once the Red Devils settled then Roma’s defensive frailties and inability to retain the ball were exposed for all to see and in the league, it wasn’t much better conceding 58 goals, the most in the top half of Serie A.

Considering Spurs’ squad is not one of the best in the league it could cost over £100 million to make them serious contenders for the Europa League next season.

Pundit claims Bielsa has signed a new deal

As it became clear that Leeds United would not be anywhere near relegation and would comfortably survive, talk turned to the future of Marcelo Bielsa. Former Leeds midfielder David Norris has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that the Argentine has already signed a new deal.

There had been talks about the Leeds hierarchy planning for life without Bielsa and were looking at potential candidates and former Juventus manager, Massimiliano Allegri was thought to be one of them.

However, it is now widely expected that Bielsa will sign at least another 12-month contract which will see him guide Leeds into their second Premier League season but this time with the roar of the Elland Road faithful behind him and the team.

Bielsa has worked wonders at Leeds taking them back into the Premier League and then helping them finish in the top 10 and Norris claims that the Argentine will be staying for at least another season as he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“It didn’t look like he was ever looking to move or was biding his time to see if anything better was out there. It was just never on his list of priorities.

“I’ve heard from inside that he has already agreed on a new deal so that’s just a matter of time now before that comes out, and that’s a massive signing for Leeds because it lets everyone just relax over the summer knowing that he isn’t going to leave.”

Bielsa has earned himself some rave reviews during his first spell in the Premier League, with the current league winning manager, Pep Guardiola, being in awe of Bielsa as he was in shock to find out that the Leeds boss had praised him and his management style.

It is not just Bielsa’s situation that Leeds fans will currently be sweating over as they wait to see if Kalvin Phillips is fit enough to be part of Gareth Southgate’s European Championship final 26-man squad, although it is expected that he will be.
