Lamba 85 helps Rajasthan advance

A round-up of the Central Zone matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that took place on April 5, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Apr-2014Rajasthan entered the second round of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy thanks to Ankit Lamba, who scored 85 in their three-wicket win over Vidarbha in the final over in Nagpur. Chasing 158, Lamba nearly batted through the innings, and was dismissed in the penultimate over with Rajasthan needing seven off ten balls with three wickets in hand. Deepak Chahar and Pankaj Singh saw them through with five balls to spare.Rajkot, Mumbai to host Super League

The ten teams that have qualified for the Super League stage will be split into two groups, with Rajkot hosting the Group A matches and Mumbai the Group B games. The final on April 14 will be staged in Mumbai.
Group A Haryana, Goa, Jharkhand, Gujarat, UP
Group B Delhi, Kerala, Bengal, Baroda, Rajasthan

Pankaj was in good form with the ball, taking 3 for 29. Vidarbha’s highest stand was 70 for the third wicket between Faiz Fazal and Amol Ubarhande. Ubarhande top-scored with an exact 50 off 39 balls. Fazal made 36 before he was dismissed by Aniket Choudhary, who took 3 for 22. Pankaj took two wickets in the final over as Vidarbha ended on 157 for 7.Lamba was the mainstay of Rajasthan’s chase and their highest stand was 46 for the first wicket between Lamba and Suryaprakash Suwalka. Rajasthan were 113 for 3 in the 15th over but lost two quick wickets for 11 runs. Lamba was run out, after hitting seven fours and five sixes. The eighth-wicket pair ensured his efforts didn’t go to waste.Uttar Pradesh topped the Central Zone table after thumping Railways by 63 runs in Nagpur. It was a collective effort from UP, who made 150 after batting first even though none of their batsmen made 30. Debutants Digvijay Singh and Upendra Yadav got them going, both scoring 26, before Akshdeep Nath and Umang Sharma contributed similarly useful 20s down the order. They lost nine wickets, three of them going to left-arm spinner Ashish Yadav.Railways’ chase was doomed from the start, with seamers Praveen Kumar and Imtiaz Ahmed striking early before the spinners took over. Left-arm orthodox spinner Praveen Gupta, left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and legspinner Piyush Chawla took two wickets each as Railways crumbled to 87 all out.

Mathews calls for other bowlers to support Herath better

Angelo Mathews has challenged the supporting men in Sri Lanka’s attack to ease Rangana Herath’s wicket-taking burden ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, in Abu Dhabi

Angelo Mathews has challenged the supporting men in Sri Lanka’s attack to ease Rangana Herath’s wicket-taking burden ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, in Abu Dhabi. Herath has been Sri Lanka’s spearhead in the four years since Muttiah Muralitharan retired, and has waged many lone battles as others bowlers were rendered toothless by conditions and the opposition.Since Murali left the game Herath has three times the number of wickets any other bowler has managed, with 129, and he has also been the team’s primary match-winner. Herath has taken seven five-wicket hauls in Sri Lanka’s five wins post-Murali, and his 49 wickets in those matches have come at an average of 13.97.Sri Lanka’s attack is far from settled in the lead-up to the match, with five bowlers vying for three positions around Herath. Offspinners Sachithra Senanayake and Dilruwan Perera will compete for the second spinner’s spot, while pace bowlers Nuwan Pradeep, Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal are frontrunners for the two fast-bowling places.”We all know that Rangana Herath is a great bowler but we can’t just give the burden of taking all the wickets to him,” Mathews said. “We need the help of the seamers and the other spinner who plays. When you compare the Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi wickets, Abu Dhabi has a little bit more pace than the other two. The seam bowlers that we’ve got have a bit of extra pace, so that will help quite a lot here. Our spinners will come into play in all three Test matches, but if our seamers get a couple of crucial wickets early on and a couple of wickets at the end, that will also help.”Mathews was unperturbed by the prospect of facing the opposition’s spin-bowling spearhead Saeed Ajmal, as he banked on his batsmen’s experience to nullify Ajmal’s threat. Ajmal has been effective against Sri Lanka in the past, taking 47 wickets at 29.53 against them, but Sri Lanka have also played Ajmal more than any other team in the past five years. Since 2009, there have been four completed Test series between the teams and a fifth that was cut short due to the terrorist attack in Lahore.”Ajmal has been talked about a lot in the team and we’ve made plans about how we are going to play him. There’s good experience in the team, if you take Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene. Although we no longer have Tillakaratne Dilshan, we’ve got some experienced players. With that experience and because we are at full strength, we should be able play him well, give him no wickets and make big totals.”Mathews played down suggestions that Pakistan arrived in the series as favourites, and instead suggested that the teams were evenly poised. He did, however, concede Sri Lanka may be short of match practice, having played their last Test in March. Sri Lanka Cricket had organised a four-day triangular first-class tournament during the team’s layoff, but those matches had been played in October.”We’ve played some four day cricket before we left to Dubai, and we had some match-practice there, but it’s not as good as playing a Test match. There will be a bit of rustiness – there might be. But that’s the challenge of adjusting from ODI cricket to Test cricket soon as possible. That will be the main challenge for us.”

Rayner's feasts on feeble Surrey

It may have come too late to revive Middlesex’s title prospects, but Ollie Rayner’s career-best haul could well have hammered a nail in the coffin of Surrey’s Division One survival hopes.

ScorecardOllie Rayner destroyed Surrey with career-best figures•PA PhotosIt may have come too late to revive Middlesex’s title prospects, but Ollie Rayner’s career-best haul could well have hammered a nail in the coffin of Surrey’s Division One survival hopes.Rayner made use of a helpful pitch and some hapless battling to claim eight wickets in a remarkable afternoon session which saw Surrey collapse from 72 for 1 to 145 all out. Not only did Rayner, a tall offspinner, claim all his wickets in a frenetic 75-minute passage of play, but he played a part in both the other dismissals, holding on to two good catches. No wonder he later described it as “the best day of his career” and suggested he will end up “the answer to a trivia question”.It speaks volumes for this pitch that 18 wickets fell in the day and 14 of them to spin. This previously used surface has provided copious assistance to spin bowlers and appears to be worsening by the session. Gary Keedy, the Surrey spinner, has already claimed the first five wickets to fall in Middlesex’s second innings and batting fourth looks as if it will be desperately demanding. Middlesex, with a lead of 282, may already be out of sight. Such surfaces render the toss disproportionately important.Indeed, if there was any consolation to be taken from a grim afternoon by Surrey it is that David Capel, the ECB’s pitch liaison officer, departed after the first day declaring himself satisfied with what he had seen. There will be no points penalty for this pitch. That is probably right, too. Despite their success in India, England’s batsmen have a well-earned reputation for struggling against spin and conditions like this may provide valuable experience. Surrey’s panic-strewn innings reinforced the view that few county batsmen are equipped, mentally or technically, for such conditions. It would be churlish not to credit Rayner for an outstanding performance. Gaining bounce – he is six feet five inches – and substantial turn, he utilised the conditions well and engendered something close to panic in the Surrey ranks by delivering so few release balls. In partnership with Ravi Patel, who bowled his left-arm spinner nicely from the Pavilion End, Middlesex’s two spinners soon had a stranglehold on the Surrey batting.Surrey were awful. Barely two weeks after England’s players were alleged to have urinated on the pitch at The Oval, Surrey produced a performance that was every bit as grim. With conditions crying out for occupation of the crease, players lacking confidence in their defence, either prodded around nervously or attacked needlessly. None of the top six, with the exception of the out of sorts Arun Harinath, fell to a defensive stroke and only one or two Surrey batsmen – notably Tim Linley – could consider themselves the faultless recipients of unplayable deliveries. The crucial breakthrough owed much to an outrageous slice of fortune. Bowling to a batsman as accomplished as Hashim Amla must be a daunting experience for a 22-year-old with a handful of first-class games behind him, so perhaps it was nerves that resulted in Ravi Patel delivering a waist-high full toss. Inexplicably, however, Amla thrashed it to mid-on where Rayner clung on a sharp chance.Perhaps the wicket shocked Surrey. It was, after all, only Amla’s intervention that led Surrey to their first victory of the season, against Derbyshire, the other day and with him gone, all the old flaws were apparent. Rayner later commented that Middlesex had sensed Surrey’s fear and concluded they might “cave in” if they could build pressure, but Middlesex can hardly have dreamed they would “cave in” so easily.Rory Burns and Steve Davies were caught by brilliantly by Sam Robson at short-leg as they turned balls into the leg side, Zander de Bruyn top-edged a sweep – a high risk stroke on a surface offering sharp bounce – while Vikram Solanki and Stuart Meaker both drove to mid-wicket in trying to hit over the top.Surrey only passed the follow-on mark due to four byes though Middlesex later confirmed that they would not have enforced it anyway.”I’ve bowled better,” Rayner, Fallingbostel’s finest, admitted modestly afterwards. “But when things go for your way, these things can happen. A couple of wickets there were lucky and the pitch is really conducive to what I’m doing. It’s ragging out there and maybe my height is making the difference. There’s a long way to go, but maybe this will put us back in the title race.”I’m very grateful to Middlesex. They’ve been very patient and stuck with me even when I haven’t been able to take any wickets and my batting has been crap. It’s good to be able to repay them a little.”

Openers lead strong Punjab reply

On what was the first full day’s play in Jamshedpur, Punjab held the upper hand in all three sessions to put them on course to taking the advantage against the hosts Jharkhand

ScorecardFile photo – Jiwanjot Singh was in sight of another big score, batting on 77•ESPNcricinfo LtdOn what was the first full day’s play in Jamshedpur, Punjab held the upper hand in all three sessions to put them on course to taking the advantage against the hosts Jharkhand.Riding on four-wicket hauls by the seamer Siddarth Kaul and legspinner Sarabjit Ladda , the Group A toppers first restricted Jharkhand to a first-innings total of 401. The opener Jiwanjot Singh then continued his dream debut season with an unbeaten fifty, adding two vital partnerships to help Punjab end the day at 150 for 1.As the teams reached the stadium in the morning, they were in for a surprise with the sun shining brightly for the first time in the game. With no fog around, the game started as per schedule. Jharkhand would have hoped for their overnight centurion Ishank Jaggi to continue their march towards a big first-innings total along with Sunny Gupta. However, the Punjab pace duo of Kaul and Manpreet Gony bowled a nagging line to deprive Jaggi and Gupta easy singles. With runs hard to come by at the start of the day, it was easier for Ladda and Harbhajan Singh to take over from the pacers. They maintained the pressure, and a wicket eventually came in the 13th over of the day.Ladda decided to change the angle and bowl round the wicket to Jaggi, who edged one that pitched just outside the leg stump to Mandeep Singh at first slip. With the score at 340 for 7, Punjab looked to wind up the Jharkhand innings quickly. But they had to toil for another hour before tasting success. Gupta and Shahbaz Nadeem survived several edges and leg-before appeals and with lunch around the corner, it seemed as if they would comfortably take Jharkhand towards 450. However, just before the interval, Ladda got Nadeem to scoop one to Jiwanjot at short leg. The Jharkhand innings lasted just two overs after lunch as Kaul sent Shankar Rao’s middle stump for a walk off the third ball after resumption. Last man Ajay Yadav then ran himself out in the next over, shortly after Jharkhand passed the 400 mark. With the visitors in the hunt of a 400-plus total, a good start was required. Jiwanjot, who came into the game with 785 runs under his belt, and Ravi Inder Singh did just that, with their right and left-hand combination not allowing the Jharkhand new-ball bowlers settle into a rhythm. Once spin was introduced as early as the 11th over, in the form of captain Nadeem, the Punjab duo negotiated him well and kept the scoreboard moving, without indulging in any outrageous drives or over-ambitious flicks or cuts. The first error they committed cost them. Ravi Inder got a ball from Nadeem that pitched on the rough created by the bowlers’ foot marks and nicked it to the slips, where Manish Vardhan took a diving catch. But Taruwar Kohli, who played the stroke of the day off his first ball – a straight drive that raced to the fence – then curbed his natural instincts in the last session to make matters easier for Jiwanjot. Jiwanjot has built a reputation of converting his starts into big hundreds. If he lives up to it on the penultimate day, then Punjab could well be in a celebratory mood by the end of Wednesday’s play.

Warne douses comeback talk

Shane Warne has clarified his comments regarding a Test comeback, declaring that he is “not even considering” such a move in the lead-up to next year’s Ashes

Brydon Coverdale06-Dec-2012Shane Warne has clarified his comments regarding a Test comeback, declaring that he is “not even considering” such a move in the lead-up to next year’s Ashes. Earlier this week, Warne said he had been frustrated with the way Australia’s bowlers had let down their captain Michael Clarke during the loss to South Africa in Perth, and if Clarke asked him to make a comeback he was confident he would be able to play to Test standard.Warne, 43, would have to make such a return through club cricket for St Kilda and Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria, but he said on Thursday that was not on his radar. Warne, the captain of the Melbourne Stars, was promoting Friday night’s Big Bash League season opener between the Stars and the Melbourne Renegades, and he said he had spoken to Clarke during the week to clear up any confusion.”I spoke to Pup on a few different matters. That’s all been pretty cleared up about all that sort of stuff,” Warne said. “I’m not asking Michael Clarke. My quotes were all about if you ask me could I do it, I have no doubt that I could. But it’s a big commitment. There’s grade cricket, there’s state cricket, you have to go through that process and hopefully get selected.”For me it’s nothing that I’m even considering. I’m bowling as good as I possibly have for the last five or six years. At this stage right now if you ask me do I want to make a comeback? No. I’m concentrating on the Big Bash.”Warne also dismissed the idea that he could consider playing club or state cricket after the BBL, and said that his commentary duties would keep him busy. “At this stage with my calendar I’ve got the first Test of Australia vs India for ESPN in India [in February],” Warne said. “So at this stage there’ll be no grade cricket.”

Final one-dayer washed out

The final one-day international between England and West Indies at Headingley was washed out as torrential rain lashed Leeds leading to a call-off shortly after 1pm

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jun-2012England v West Indies – Match abandoned
ScorecardThe final one-day international between England and West Indies at Headingley was washed out as torrential rain lashed Leeds leading to a call-off shortly after 1pm. It meant England take the series 2-0 following their handsome victories at West End and The Oval.In 2009 the corresponding fixture was also abandoned without a ball bowled when the Headingley drainage struggled to cope with a morning downpour but this time the weather never threatened to break to allow any action. This was the fourth day of international cricket lost during the tour following the weather-ruined Edgbaston Test that only had play on two days. The lack of action meant no opportunity to look at England’s rejigged side after they rested Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann, a decision that provoked another debate about resting and rotation. The three players will be back with the squad for the Twenty20 international at Trent Bridge on Sunday which concludes West Indies’ visit.Following the Twenty20, England then have five one-day internationals against Australia before the main contest of the season with a three-Test series against South Africa.
