Bowling headaches aplenty for India selectors

The Indian team for Asia Cup and World Twenty20 will be chosen on Tuesday when the national selectors meet in Bangalore, where the Irani Cup is being played between Karnataka and Rest of India

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Feb-2014The Indian team for Asia Cup and World Twenty20 will be chosen on Tuesday when the national selectors meet in Bangalore, where the Irani Cup is being played between Karnataka and Rest of India. India have lost six of their last seven completed ODIs, and with their bowling and the role of a few batsmen under the scanner, it will be an interesting selection in the World Cup year. Having played only five Twenty20 internationals since the last World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, there is little form to go by when it comes to the selection of the side for the World Twenty20, which, like the Asia Cup, will be played in Bangladesh. In the ODI side, the bowlers remain the perennial problem, but it is the parallel faltering of batting under pressure of high totals conceded by the bowlers that is becoming a new headache. Suresh Raina has scored only one fifty – that too against Zimbabwe – in his last 24 innings, and was dropped midway during the series in New Zealand. His place is likely to be debated after the experiment to send him up to No. 4 also failed earlier in the season. Stuart Binny, who bowled only one international over and didn’t get to bat in the only ODI played in New Zealand, did his chances of going to Asia Cup no harm by smacking 115 not out off 107 balls in the Irani Cup a day before the team selection.Shikhar Dhawan might have signalled possible return to form with a century in the Auckland Test, but the selectors could question the opening combination where Rohit Sharma and he have struggled over the last seven ODIs, all away from Asia. There has been a lot of push from analysts and former players to include Cheteshwar Pujara in the ODI side, and if India are to do that, this might be the right time given the proximity to the World Cup. Pujara himself has said he is keen to represent India at the World Cup. However, his fielding and how much playing ODIs might affect his fitness for Tests will be key factors to the decision. Finding bowlers, though, is a bit of a roulette. India have tried various combinations since the last World Cup with similar and disappointing results. For the T20s, Raina is a shoo-in, and Yuvraj Singh is a key player too. Both have been struggling in the ODIs of late, but are likely to be part of the World T20 side. Bowling will again remain a problem, and it will be interesting to see if India pick Binny, who was considered good enough by Rajasthan Royals to retain.

New Zealand target Sangakkara and Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara are the most serious obstacles on New Zealand’s path to an elusive series win in Sri Lanka, allrounder James Neesham has said ahead of their third ODI in Dambulla. The visitors have not won an ODI trophy in Sri Lanka since their triumph in a tri-series involving Pakistan in 2003, but following Tuesday’s thrilling victory, a depleted team is now one win away from securing the series 2-0.Sangakkara and Dilshan are the most prolific ODI partnership in the past two years, and are also first and third respectively on the individual run chart for the same period. They have cumulatively made 286 runs in the series so far, 263 of them together, where New Zealand have been the most vulnerable in the match.”We’ve been concentrating on Dilshan and Sangakkara at the top of the order,” Neesham said. “They’ve batted well and we spent a bit of time at training yesterday formulating plans on how to bowl to them and perfecting what we’ve been doing already. Hopefully that will work for us in the next game. They are quality players all around the world, and it’s a challenge for our bowlers to come up against them. They’ve had the better of us in the first two games.”New Zealand’s batting has appeared their stronger suit on tour, as evidenced by the successful chase of 198 from 23 overs in Hambantota, and while the team has gained confidence from that victory, the batting unit has been among the runs for some time. Prior to arriving in Sri Lanka, New Zealand hit 307 in the third ODI against Bangladesh in Fatullah, before making 204 in a T20 match.”I think the confidence and the belief in the team has been there for a while,” Neesham said. “Even in Bangladesh we knew we were playing decent cricket, and we knew the results would turn around eventually, so it’s nice to get on the right side of the ledger.”Though the trip to the subcontinent has been largely disappointing for New Zealand, who drew the Tests and lost all three ODIs against Bangladesh, acting captain Kyle Mills said individual performances from emerging players had been a heartening byproduct of the tour. Allrounders Neesham, Corey Anderson and batsman Colin Munro had impressed in Bangladesh, before 21-year-old Tom Latham hit a vital 86 from 68 in the win against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.”A number of young players are putting their hands up going back to Bangladesh, as well,” Mills said. “Some of these guys, six months ago, probably wouldn’t have been in the New Zealand side, but they have played some exceptional cricket. What it does is build depth within the group and forces people to really challenge for spots. In the long run it’s going to bode well for New Zealand cricket.”New Zealand had not been expected to leave Sri Lanka with an ODI series win, particularly given the absence of three key batsmen. Their victory in Hambantota has also foiled Sri Lanka’s plan to use this series to blood young players of their own, and they instead pursue a face-saving win in Dambulla.”It would be sensational to get a series win,” Neesham said. “The boys have been under the pump since the Bangladesh series. Getting a win at the end of that tour gave us a bit of confidence coming into this one. We haven’t won a game in Sri Lanka for a long time before the last one, so winning a series will be massive for us.”

Russell puts spanner in Somerset's works

A whirlwind half-century by West Indian Andre Russell delayed Somerset’s march towards the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals as Worcestershire registered a surprise five-wicket win at New Road.Worcestershire ended a run of three defeats and climbed off the bottom of the Midlands/Wales/West group by overhauling Somerset’s formidable total of 188 for 4 with two balls to spare.Russell led the charge to victory with six sixes in an unbeaten 77 from 42 balls – his highest score on a T20 contract for the county – and Ross Whiteley, newly signed from Derbyshire, was the perfect foil with 43 on his debut. The tall left hander cleared the rope twice in stand of 88 in nine overs before a top edge off Yasir Arafat was well taken by Chris Jones at deep midwicket. The momentum was then so much with Worcestershire that two fours by Russell in the last over from Craig Meschede completed a double over Somerset in the group.Worcestershire lost early wickets but with rain threatening they made brisk progress through Alexei Kervezee, with 32 on stepping up to open, and Daryl Mitchell with 23 until he was leg-before to George Dockrell’s first ball.Somerset had made a bad start when Jones popped up a return chance to Jack Shantry but Worcestershire subsequently conceded eight sixes and 14 fours on a good batting surface.Peter Trego led the way with 62 from only 31 balls and Craig Kieswetter was close to batting through the innings, cruising to 80 from 56 deliveries, before he was caught at wide long on in the 19th over. The pressure exerted by two batsmen targeting the shorter boundaries led to a number of fielding errors as Somerset romped to 61 in the six-over power play.Trego was the chief enforcer, bludgeoning three sixes and eight fours until Worcestershire captain Mitchell appeared as the sixth bowler and beat the allrounder’s attempt to drive his fourth delivery.Jos Buttler briefly showed his flair for the shorter format until he was also bowled, making a complete mess of the scoop shot, but Kieswetter continued on his trouble-free course. Selective hitting brought four sixes and five fours before falling to Shantry with a neat catch by Whiteley.

Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan, two of the three Rajasthan Royals players arrested after allegations of spot-fixing, have applied for bail. A Delhi court will hear their case on May 28. Chavan had been moved to judicial custody till June 4 before he made his application. Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila, the other Royals player arrested this month, were remanded to two more days of police custody. While making his bail plea, Chavan informed the court that his wedding was scheduled for June 2.Royals had already suspended the contracts of all three players and also filed a police complaint against them. The players were allegedly promised money ranging from US$36,000 to 109,000 by bookies for each over of under-performance.Eleven bookies were also arrested along with the three players on May 16. One of the middlemen was identified as Jiju Janardhan, described by the police as Sreesanth’s close friend and team-mate at the Ernakulam club. Delhi Police had registered cases under the Indian Penal Code section 420 and 120B, which deal with fraud, cheating, and criminal conspiracy.

Bangladesh eye series-levelling win

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI in Pallekele

Big PictureThe second-ODI washout may have disturbed the flow of the series, but for Bangladesh it has comes as a welcome opportunity. Bangladesh have never been alive in a series in Sri Lanka going into the third match, but this time they are just a win away from squaring it.They have batted well in patches, Tamim Iqbal’s century and the excellent finish from Nasir Hossain being the bright spots. But this is a big game where the three senior batsmen – Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah – need to step up. Ashraful and Mushfiqur got out in the middle of a mini-collapse in the first ODI while Mahmudullah showed signs of some form . He gave it away after tickling one to the wicketkeeper, but till that point he had batted soundly.Bowling is Bangladesh’s main worry. The pace bowlers were clobbered in a confidence-sapping outing in the first ODI. They cut down on the number of seamers in the second ODI using allrounder Ziaur Rahman as a new-ball bowler. The spinners will give them the best chance of winning, although it goes against the grain at Pallekele. For Sri Lanka, a win is of paramount importance given the circumstances surrounding the players. The team has so far fended off questions about their participation in the IPL, but it is a much talked-about issue. The only way to regain focus would be by winning the series. It is a test for captain Angelo Mathews to keep his eyes set on beating a lower-ranked side and Bangladesh’s current improvement is likely to keep them honest to the job at hand.Form guide Sri Lanka WLWWL (most recent first, completed matches only)
Bangladesh LWLLWIn the spotlightIt has not been a great tour for young Anamul Haque but he has come to the senior team with the tag of “young and hungry”. His only Test appearance was disappointing while in the first ODI, Anamul looked good in bits. Much is expected from him, especially after the century he hit in only his second ODI.The excitement surrounding Kusal Perera is bourgeoning with every shot in his repertoire. But there’s more to him than just playing like Sanath Jayasuriya. He was expected to play a long innings at some point in this series, given the triple and double hundred he struck in two of the three innings before this series.Team newsMathews didn’t hint at many changes ahead of the second ODI and he played with an unchanged line-up from the first game. The weather for the second game of the series offers encouraging signs, but it has rained in the surrounding areas over the last few days.Stats & Trivia Among the top eight wicket-takers in Sri Lanka-Bangladesh encounters, none of them are playing in this series. Nuwan Kulasekara and Abdur Razzak have taken 14 wickets each, among the current bowlers.Tamim Iqbal’s 112 was the highest individual score for a Bangladesh batsman in Sri Lanka and the team’s 259 runs was also the highest in this country.Quotes”We can’t win the series, but at the same time, we can prevent a series loss.”

South Africa search for summer sweep

South Africa stand on the cusp of their most successful period under Graeme Smith, who was keen to finish the summer on a winning note

Firdose Moonda in Centurion21-Feb-2013The last time Graeme Smith captained South Africa in a dead rubber, the team had just won a series in Australia. Little else mattered but Smith batted with a broken hand to try to stave off defeat in the third Test even though it had no bearing on the bigger picture. One of the most marked differences between the current South African side and the one of 2008-9 is that closing the deal at the earliest opportunity is more important to this lot. “We’ve been through some growth periods. Certain things didn’t work then as they are now,” Smith said. “Systems in the team are running a lot better and some processes are a lot more professional. We’ve taken that step that we were searching for.”The focus on being more clinical has paid off. South Africa stand on the cusp of their most successful period under Smith. Never before under Smith’s captaincy have South Africa won all the Test matches in a home summer as they could with victory in Centurion. Never before have they won five in a row as they have now and never before have they been as determined to keep the intensity up.”Being mentally sharp is going to the challenge but I think we will be,” Smith said. “The energy at training was good and we would love to finish our summer of Test cricket on a positive note.”A whitewash will be nothing more than a show of dominance but it is important in establishing themselves as ruthless, especially since South Africa disappear from the Test circuit after this match. Attention will fall on India’s series against Australia and the Ashes and the No.1 ranked side in the world will have to wait until October before they play again. The break in the schedule may rob South Africa of the chance to play at their peak but that is something no-one can control. They would have featured sooner had the July-August tour to Sri Lanka not been turned into a limited-overs only affair and Smith did not show too much disappointment at that. “We would love to have carried on the momentum we’ve started and to keep playing and playing well but when you’ve played for a long time you deal with things as they come.”Smith was even able to spot a positive in the long break before facing Pakistan in UAE in October. South Africa will use the Centurion Test to study their opposition closely in preparation for their return clash. “When we start playing again later in the year there won’t be any time to find our feet again. Hopefully the confidence will be as strong as it is now. The squad is performing well as a group. We’ve got some highly skilled players. Hopefully we can pick up from that.”Growing that legacy is the immediate goal and winning in Centurion will go some way to realising that. It is also the chance for Smith to notch up another achievement. Should South Africa emerge victorious, Smith will have his 50th victory as Test captain, something no other leader has achieved. At Newlands he overtook Allan Border as the captain with the most Test victories and at the Wanderers, he became the only person to captain a team 100 times in Test cricket. The accolades are so regular, Smith doesn’t have the words to describe what they mean to him anymore, except to say he wants to keep going. “I’m running out of things to say. I am looking forward to that number growing even more. It’s a great achievement for me and the guys that I have played with.Hopefully when I reflect back on this one day I can say that as a team we did ourselves proud and not that we left ourselves short. I will be extremely proud to saying I could take South Africa to No.1 in the world and that we could stay there.”

Pensei no projeto e me programei.

– Meu objetivo, agora, é completar cem jogos consecutivos.

O jogo é a cereja do bolo.

Nash proves a point for Kent

ScorecardBrendan Nash last played for West Indies in June 2011•Associated Press

Queenslander Brendan Nash posted his maiden century in county cricket to put his new club Kent in the driving seat at the mid-point of their second division clash with Yorkshire.Australian-raised by white Jamaican parents – his father Paul swam at the Olympics and Commonwealth games for the island – Nash was unceremoniously dropped after winning his 21st Test caps for the West Indies last June. So poorly was it handled that he learned of his axing on the internet. With a point to prove to the West Indies’ selectors, he agreed in March to join a new look Kent side headed up by his former batting mentor in Jamaica, Jimmy Adams. So far, the move is proving to be an agreeable one for both parties, despite the fact that Nash was greeted like a rookie on his first visit to the St Lawrence ground.”On my first day here the dressing room attendant, Dicky Cannon, thought I was here for a trial and sent me to change in the away dressing room,” explained Nash. “That was just after the security guys at the gate had told me I couldn’t park in the ground. I like to go under the radar a bit but not quite that much. I guess as the overseas player there’s an aura that goes with the job title, but all of that will just make me more determined to proceed.”A diminutive and nuggety left-hander, Nash, 34, scored 381 runs in his five matches for Jamaica in our close-season at an average of 63 and he continued his hot form at a chilly, yet sunny St Lawrence Ground. While the weather continued to frustrate many, so Canterbury enjoyed blue skies. For one moment, Nash might have imagined he was back at Sabina Park – although the temperatures never rose above 14 degrees.Playing with an eye-catching blend of patience and counter attack, the Nash left Yorkshire’s attack bemused and frustrated during an innings that will have reminded their supporters of Darren Lehmann, another gritty left-hander who fully earned his classy reputation in the first-class game.Having seen his county’s top-order virtually all make starts without going on, Nash dug in ala Lehmann to nurdle his way to the first 50 of the game from 82 balls, while all around perished. Scott Newman reached the 30s before pushing at one with hard hands to be caught behind, then soon after lunch, Sam Northeast almost walked for an lbw shout after being trapped on the crease by Ajmal Shahzad.Ben Harmison also toughed it out, scoring 43 with due diligence and respect for the quality of the Yorkshire attack before he lost the plot by swotting across the line to also fall leg before. With the ball still nibbling around, out-and-out shot-making was a risky business as Michael Powell (3) and Darren Stevens (8) quickly discovered.Former Glamorgan stalwart Powell nicked one from Ryan Sidebottom to second slip then Stevens, having survived two previous shouts for leg before against Tim Bresnan, perished to the third when umpire Trevor Jesty raised his finger. In mid-afternoon Geraint Jones joined forces with Nash for the most attractive partnership of the match. The sixth-wicket partners adding 77 in 16 overs at a healthy lick of 4.81 an over. Jones was the main aggressor, cracking nine to the ropes in his 49-ball stay for 47, before his leaden-footed smear at one from Sidebottom flew throat-high into the hands of Gary Ballance at slip.Nash ploughed on, unflustered and unhurried to take Kent beyond Yorkshire’s first innings of 247 and to his maiden century for the club. He got there with a late cut against Sidebottom that just beat the fielder at wide third man for the 10th first-class hundred of his career. In tandem with fellowleft-hander James Tredwell, Nash still refused to yield in the final throws of the day and helping Kent to a third batting bonus point shortly before stumps, went in unbeaten on 114.
