Manchester United fans want to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic re-signed

Manchester United played Bournemouth this weekend, and while that isn’t a historically great Premier League clash, there have been moments in the games between the Cherries and the Red Devils that will live long in the memory.

Junior Stanislas scoring directly from a corner as the south coast club overcame the 20-time champions, the delayed final day of the season and Jose Mourinho’s first league game in charge of the club have all been memorable events for one reason or another, but there may be no moment as iconic as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first Manchester United goal.

Indeed, the Swede netted his first strike for the Red Devils against Eddie Howe’s men in trademark fashion as he drilled the ball into the back of the net from around 30 yards.

Three years on and Manchester United elected to choose the former PSG man’s strike as their Goal of the Day as they prepared to take on Bournemouth at the Vitality.

This tweet sparked a response from a number of United fans as they pleaded with the club to bring the 116-cap Ibrahimovic back for one more spell at Old Trafford.

Here’s what the fanbase have been saying on Twitter…

Exclusive: John Hartson says Tottenham will be looking for new centre-backs

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Arsenal striker turned pundit John Hartson believes that Tottenham Hotspur will be actively looking for new centre-backs.

As things stand, Spurs will lose out-of-contract duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen when they contracts expire in the summer, and potentially even in January if they are offered an acceptable fee by another club.

While there hasn’t really been a recent update on the situation with Alderweireld, The Daily Mail reports that the club is in talks with Vertonghen over an extension, although they are apprehensive about offering him more than just a further 12 months because he is 32 years of age.

It remains to be seen whether any compromise can be reached in that regard with the same report saying the Belgium international will use the fact that the 30-year-old Moussa Sissoko was handed a new four-year contract last week as a bargaining tool during discussions.

With Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth yet to really show consistently that they can be starting XI regulars for Tottenham, Hartson wouldn’t be surprised if the club’s scouts are hard at work right now given the situation with the Belgian duo.

The Welshman said: “They’ll have to be proactive in the market because there will become a time in January when they can talk to clubs and leave on a free at the end of the season.

“They will be constantly looking for centre halves now with them two looking like they’ll let their contracts run down.”

Hartson is completely right, and it is looking more and more likely that a more serious rebuild is needed at Tottenham in 2020 given recent results and performances – Pochettino has even suggested as much himself.

Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet will have to deal with Gerard Moreno

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Barcelona will welcome Villarreal to Camp Nou on Tuesday evening and keeping the Yellow Submarine’s prolific attack at bay will play a huge role in their chances of picking up all three points.

Precisely for that reason, one of their defenders will have to bring his A-game to the table.

On the chalkboard

The Catalan giants have suffered two defeats and a draw in the opening five games, including a shock 2-0 loss to Granada at the weekend.

Of course, these are still very much the early days and big teams do tend to bounce back in the latter stages of the campaign but Barca have already reached a point where every victory will be crucial.

With that in mind, Tuesday’s game against Villarreal will be a must-win encounter.

But seeing how they’ve struggled defensively this season, having conceded nine goals in five games, the key battle just might be fought in their backline.

Good defence key

Of course, when you have the likes of Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez in the squad, it’s difficult not to talk about them potentially banging in the goals but keeping a good defensive record will be just as important. For that reason, Clement Lenglet could play a big role.

The 24-year-old French defender is likely to come face to face with Gerard Moreno, Villarreal’s prolific forward who has scored five goals in as many games in La Liga this season. Stopping him from doing his thing should be top of the club’s priorities.

Lenglet, however, is no slouch either. He has tallied 2.2 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game in La Liga this season. Compare this to Moreno’s three shots and 2.8 key passes per game.

Lenglet is also not easy to beat. So far in La Liga, he has only been dribbled past 0.2 times per game while Moreno, on the other hand, has 1.2 dribbles per game. That seems to be an area where Lenglet definitely can get the better of him, especially when adding tackles into the equation.

Both players have participated in every fixture in the competition so far for their respective clubs and are look set to continue their streak – the winner of this battle, then, just might decide the whole game.

Barcelona: Fans react to club’s Frenkie de Jong tweet

Barcelona fans have been comparing Frenkie de Jong to legendary midfielder Xavi in reaction to a recent club post on Twitter.

The Dutchman was signed from Ajax in the summer transfer window to become the Catalan club’s latest maestro, and in a recent tweet Barcelona made reference to his outstanding passing ability and love of doing it.

They captioned an image of De Jong laying on the floor and staring at the grass with: “Each individual blade of grass has the potential to affect passing accuracy.”

Many Barca fans have responded to this by likening the Netherlands international to their former player Xavi, who himself was noted for his love of passing the ball as well as being extremely gifted at it.

Whilst De Jong has a long way to go to reach the heights that Xavi did, there are certainly similarities in how they both play the game.

Xavi himself has previously commented on De Jong’s ability, saying: “De Jong is a footballer who can mark an era in Barcelona. He is able to dominate the game, he sees it easily and doesn’t lose the ball.”

Barcelona fans will likely be hoping that De Jong can go on and achieve close to what Xavi did in his time at the Nou Camp. Here is how some of responded to the post on Twitter, with most comparing the Dutchman to the great Spaniard…

Arsenal need Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin, says Charlie Nicholas

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Charlie Nicholas has suggested to Sky Sports that Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin should start for Arsenal against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

What did he say?

Tierney and Bellerin are yet to feature for the Gunners this term, but both returned to first-team training last week as they enter the final stages of their recovery.

Unai Emery’s side have struggled defensively in recent weeks, conceding seven goals in their last three matches.

Nicholas, therefore, wants to see the two full-backs in the side to face last season’s Europa League semi-finalists.

He said: “I would play Kieran Tierney on Thursday and see if Hector Bellerin could start too. Regarding Sunday’s game against Watford, when you see David Luiz giving instructions with 20 minutes to go, you know you are in trouble.”

“Konstantinos Mavropanos is still game time away from being fit. It would be the end if Shkodran Mustafi was to be brought back. We need to get Rob Holding, Bellerin and Tierney back into the side as soon as possible. I would take a hit and play these players to give them game time and let them get match fitness.”

Too soon to risk them

It is, of course, a boost to the north London outfit that the two wide defenders are approaching full fitness, and the former Sevilla boss will be looking to introduce them to the side sooner rather than later. However, it is too early to risk them from the start.

Tierney has been out since June. That is long enough and means that he has not been through a demanding pre-season, but it pales in comparison to the amount of time Bellerin has spent on the sidelines. The 24-year-old ruptured his cruciate ligament in January of this year and has not played since.

They need to be brought back into the fold slowly, and should certainly not be seen as the answer to Emery’s backline woes immediately. After such difficult periods, the last thing they need is too much pressure, both mentally and physically.

Also, a match against Frankfurt is certainly not a fixture that should be seen as an easy match in which to reintroduce them. The German side impressed in Europe last term and are dangerous opposition.

Yes, both players will be needed in the side in the near future. But shouldn’t be thrown in at the deep end on Thursday.

Give them more time, and then utilise them when they are truly ready.

Southampton fans react as Guido Carrillo joins Leganes on a season-long loan deal

[ad_pod ]

Some Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was confirmed by the club that Guido Carrillo had joined Leganes on a season-long loan deal.

The Argentine was signed from Monaco back in January 2018 for a then club-record fee of £19m, although his career at St Mary’s hasn’t really gone as anyone would’ve hoped it would.

Carrillo has made just 10 appearances for the Saints, scoring a grand total of zero goals – he has just two assists to show for his efforts in a Southampton shirt, working out at £9.5m per goal involvement.

The 28-year-old spent the entirety of last season on loan with Leganes as well, scoring six goals for the Spanish side, and he will now join up once again with Mauricio Pellegrino – the man who signed him for Southampton.

Let’s see how the Saints supporters on Twitter reacted to the news regarding the expensive flop…

Newcastle fans react as Dummett shows support for coaching staff

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has hit back at the notion he criticised the club’s coaching staff, but the Toon Army aren’t buying his latest statement.

It’s been a tumultuous summer at St. James’ Park, and two losses from two games isn’t exactly the best way to calm the tension on Tyneside.

The Magpies were comfortably beaten by Norwich on Saturday, and both Dummett and Yoshinori Muto appeared to criticise the actions of Steve Bruce and his coaching staff.

Dummett had said the side’s warm-up “wasn’t right”, while Muto commented on the isolation both he and Joelinton suffered at Carrow Road.

Now though, the Wales international has tweeted an explanation, clearing things up and claiming that his comment was simply in reference to the players’ effort, which wasn’t good enough. He backed the squad and coaching staff in unison, saying they must “stick together”.

Of course, the Toon Army will take any chance they can get to bash Bruce, and this is just another stick for them to beat him with.

While Dummett seems to baring his soul and revealing the squad’s feelings and support for the gaffer, his message has been met with loads of scepticism.

Just have a look at the Twitter reactions down below…

Arsenal: Henrikh Mkhitaryan is sadly disposable

Arsenal may be forced to sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan to raise funds needed to sign the players necessary to challenge again, as per The Times.

It’s no secret that Arsenal (understood to have a transfer budget of just £45m) will struggle to match the spending power of their top six rivals. Manchester United reportedly (per Raphael Honingstein on ESPN via the Express) have £200-£250m to spend, while Manchester City and Liverpool, both of whom broken their transfer records last season, aren’t exactly sort of cash.

Unai Emery on the other hand has an estimated £45million at his disposal – which is £11million less than what it cost to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last January. That’s £45million to take his current squad – who finished fifth in the Premier League conceding 51 in the process and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round and the League Cup in the quarterfinals – past the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Yikes.

It is expected that in order to raise funds to sign the necessary talent, the Gunners will sacrifice a number of players they deem surplus to requirements. And one name in particular who has been highlighted is Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 30-year-old arrived last January from United as part of a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez go the other way. The Armenia international, who recently missed the Europa League final due to ongoing political tensions, reportedly (also via the Express) earns around £200,000 per week at Arsenal – the same as his former Borussia Dortmund teammate and Golden Boot winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, while Arsenal’s top scorer weighed in at 31 goals and eight assists last term, thus proving his worth, Mkhitaryan scored just six times and fell desperately short in the creative department too, providing just seven; an output that will surely have the club questioning how necessary he is to their future plans.

Slated by Ian Wright on Sky Sports (via HITC) towards the end of the season, who described his move to North London as a ‘nightmare’, they should take any potential money and run.

Arsenal fans, would you be disappointed to see Mkhitaryan go? Who would you sacrifice? Let us know in the comments below…

Dean Henderson’s U21 performance may hurt Sheffield United’s chances of signing him

[ad_pod ]England may have lost to France at the U21 European Championships on Tuesday night, but one man whose stock rose throughout that match was Dean Henderson. For many spectators, it will have made for exciting viewing as England’s potential future number one put in an incredible performance, but for Sheffield United, it may hamper their chances of signing him.The Manchester United goalie had a breakout season last term for the Blades he kept more clean sheets than any other keeper in the Championship. His form at Bramall Lane has had the Yorkshire club clamouring to bring him back for for next season, but Tuesday’s match may have affected their hopes. The 22-year-old was a shining light on a disappointing night and he made an incredible number of saves while also keeping out a penalty from Lyon’s Moussa Dembele.

Henderson certainly showed the world what he is capable of in front of a massive audience, and his showing put himself in the shop window for any side looking for a new goalkeeper.

It may also put Manchester United on alert. David De Gea’s future at the club is far from decided, and it is not too implausible that they would give Henderson a chance next season.

Of course, the Spaniard is amongst the best stoppers in the world, but his form last season wasn’t up to his usual standards, and there have been rumours that he could leave.

It’s no secret that Henderson wants to be a part of the squad at Old Trafford after saying last week that he would give his right leg to play for the Red Devils.

The Blades still have a good chance of landing their target given they could make him a number one in the Premier League, but they shouldn’t be surprised if they face an increased amount of competition for his signature as his impressive performance on the international stage may have put some clubs on alert.
