Geraint Jones to retire at end of season

Former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones has announced that he will retire from all cricket at the end of the English summer and has stood down as Gloucestershire captain with immediate effect.

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2015Former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones has announced that he will retire from cricket at the end of the English summer and has stood down as Gloucestershire captain with immediate effect. The 38-year-old, who played 34 Tests for England and was part of the side that won the 2005 Ashes, will remain available for his county in all formats for the remainder of the season but was not named in the squad to face Northamptonshire in the Championship at Cheltenham from Wednesday.”It’s been something I’ve been thinking about quite strongly in the last few weeks,” Jones said, “and I’ve come to the decision that this season will be my last as a cricket player. But it’s on a positive note that I’ve made the decision. Yes the family side has been a big consideration but ultimately it’s about what’s best for Gloucestershire cricket and this squad.”Over the last few weeks I felt there were guys who needed an opportunity and my place in the team was potentially that opportunity. I still want to play a big role in helping the team on and off the field but now is a chance for them to start to formulate the best way forward for this group of players and for Gloucestershire cricket.”Jones made his final Test match appearance for England on the Ashes tour of 2006-07 but has represented Papua New Guinea, the country of his birth, in recent years.Jones signed a two-year deal in October 2014 when joining Gloucestershire from his county of 13 years, Kent. He was named captain of the four-day side, with Michael Klinger absent for the start of the season, and has led in every Championship fixture so far, scoring 400 runs at an average of 26.67.He has also has kept wicket in place of Gareth Roderick in recent weeks. Jones said Roderick’s return from injury was a motivating factor in stepping down from the captaincy.”With him coming back into the side it would have meant someone like Ian Cockbain missing out,” Jones said. “He’s been in and out of the side over the last few years and what was nagging away was that given the security of his place what could he be capable of? We all know what a good player he is in one-day cricket. It also gives the coaches a chance to work out where best to bat these guys and start planning for the future.”Gloucestershire head coach, Richard Dawson, said: “I respect Geraint’s decision and the reasons behind it. He has had a fantastic career and still has a big role to play in the development of the team going forward.”

'We'll do whatever you want' – Moles

While conceding that it was impossible to expect the game’s financial giants to schedule additional series against Associates, Afghanistan’s coach Andy Moles suggested that his team be used as a warm-up option for encounters against Pakistan in particular

Daniel Brettig12-Mar-2015Afghanistan are taking a pragmatic approach to the inequities of bilateral arrangements among cricket’s Full Member nations by selling themselves as the best possible means of preparing for assignments against Pakistan in the UAE or other nations on the nearby subcontinent. On the eve of their first ever ODI encounter with card-carrying “big three” nation and early World Cup evictees England, Afghanistan’s coach Andy Moles conceded it was impossible to expect the game’s financial giants to schedule additional series against Associates during the next cycle. Instead, he said his team was being offered up as a warm-up option for encounters against Pakistan in particular, given they both share a base in Dubai. Some nations have already taken up this concept on various tours and not only against Afghanistan. Australia had scheduled a match against Afghanistan in 2012 prior to a series against Pakistan, while also doing similar against Ireland that year and then with an Australia A tour taking in a visit to Ireland ahead of the Ashes. However, other countries, notably England, have been reluctant to do likewise.”What we’re trying to do is offer teams coming to play Pakistan in the UAE a package where anybody coming in there, why not play us as warm-up games,” Moles said. “It’s great for them to get used to playing against Pakistan, but also for us it’s gold, giving us the opportunity to play against these sides before their tour starts against Pakistan.”So we’re trying to package ourselves so anybody going through to Sri Lanka perhaps might drop into the UAE to see us on the way there to give them experience of playing in our conditions, which would be similar to where they’re going, but also it means we get the opportunity to play against their players.”In all reality people aren’t going to say we’ll go play against Afghanistan – there’s not a lot in it for them, let’s be honest. But if we can package something together that the Full Member nations get something out of it as well as us for playing against them, that’s got to be good.”England are scheduled to visit the UAE to face Pakistan in October this year, and Moles said Afghanistan were open to playing whatever form of warm-up fixtures the ECB preferred to get ready for the Test match encounters. England’s team performance apparatus have other more urgent matters on their plate right now, but Moles is hopeful the offer will be warmly received.”We’ve got to be realistic and try to put something together where we can say to England you’re playing Pakistan in October, come to us a week before,” Moles said. “You want a 50-over game, you want a three-day game, you want a four-day game, you want a Twenty20 game, we’ll do whatever you want.”But give us the opportunity to play against the better players, same for all the other countries coming through the region, and if we can approach it in that way we’ve actually got a package that can not only benefit us, but give the opposition coming through a huge benefit than just playing net practice or a match amongst themselves.”There’ll be competition, because we’ll be trying 100% you can be sure of that, but it will get them used to the weather and the conditions. Hopefully that will be a winning situation and that’s the way we’re going to try to tackle that issue.”While debate about the format of the World Cup itself has bubbled consistently across the tournament thus far, the question of how cricket’s second tier nations can develop in intervening years has also been a sore point. Ireland’s captain William Porterfield has often mentioned the fact his team have only played nine matches against Full Members since the 2011 tournament, and the fact that Afghanistan have never played England in an ODI underlines the point.

No encerramento do turno, o Paraná visita o Botafogo-SP, no Santa Cruz.

O jogo

A primeira etapa teve o Criciúma superior.

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Oct-2014Imran Butt’s 189 was the cornerstone of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited’s five-wicket win over Lahore Lions in Lahore. Butt’s century and fifties from Mohammad Rizwan and Adnan Akmal helped SNGPL take a crucual 138-run first-innings lead despite Bilawal’s 6 for 86.Lions were dismissed for 241 despite Umar Siddiq’s century in the second innings and set SNGPL a target of 104 for their second win of the tournament. Ali Waqas’ unbeaten 43 and Akmal’s unbeaten 29 helped the side brush off a poor start to seal the win.The SNGPL bowlers did well too. Imran Khalid’s 4 for 51 was key in restricting Lions to 232 in the first innings, while Asad Ali chipped in with 4 for 77 in the second innings.Centuries from Iftikhar Ahmed and Adnan Raees and a second-innings haul of 7 for 43 from fast bowler Mohammad Ali set up Water and Power Development Authority’s mammoth 159-run win over Multan Tigers, their third successive victory in the tournament. After being skittled out for 185 in the first innings, WAPDA ended up conceding a lead of 106. However, Iftikhar and Raees led the resurgence, smashing 132 and 122 respectively to help WAPDA declare their second innings at a formidable 354 for 6. Chasing 249, Tigers folded for only 89 as Mohammad Ali, along with Waqas Maqsood, ran through the line-up. Mohammad Ali, who had taken three wickets in the first innings, ended with his second ten-wicket haul in first-class games, while Maqsood added two wickets to his first-innings tally of 5 for 86.United Bank eased to a ten-wicket win over Peshawar Panthers after demolishing the hosts for 98 in the first innings. United Bank knocked off the target of 10 to register their second win.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited fought to a draw against Karachi Dolphins at the National Stadium. Set an improbable target of 563, ZTBL hung on to reach 337 for 6. Adeel Malik responded with 5 for 27 to give Dolphins a 104-run lead.Subhan piled on the runs in the second innings, making his highest first-class score of 207 to lead Dolphins to 458 for 8 declared.

RCB shot out for 70 in big defeat

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:17

Agarkar: RCB will be desperate for Gayle return

Two days ago, when Royal Challengers Bangalore blew a winning position to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders by two runs, Virat Kohli had said his side had lost the game more than the opposition winning it. Royal Challengers repeated the performance against Rajasthan Royals, minus the winning-position part. Within the first 14 deliveries of the match, they lost four wickets, including those of AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh. Just past the halfway stage of their innings, they lost their last realistic hope – Kohli. From 46 for 7, it was somewhat of an achievement to move past the lowest IPL total of 58, but there was no getting back in the game. Royal Challengers posted 70, the third-worst score in the IPL, and Royals completed the formalities for the loss of four wickets. After Kohli was asked to bat, he said he would have done that anyway had he won the toss. What was to follow, however, wouldn’t have figured even in his worst nightmare. This was a pitch with something for the bowlers. There was some seam and bounce, and also a bit of swing. But considering the kind of shots Royal Challengers played, they would have been in trouble on almost any surface.A couple of dots in the opening over were enough for Yogesh Takawale to charge out and heave at Stuart Binny, only to edge a gentle outswinger to the keeper. Kohli walked in and took a wicket off his first ball. His call for a single following a push to off was so late Parthiv Patel, not the best of runners, had little chance of making it across.Yuvraj Singh had a nervy seven-ball stay. He was beaten a couple of times by Tim Southee, and almost yorked himself. Then Kane Richardson trotted in and sent down a 129.6 kph outswinger. And Yuvraj promptly followed it and tickled it to second slip.At 5 for 3, Royal Challengers had their best pair in the middle to combat the crisis. Instead, AB de Villiers played on first ball, attempting a half-hearted back-foot punch without having the width. Kohli needed someone to just last for a few overs. But that was asking for too much.Three quiet overs later, Sachin Rana played on to Shane Watson in the same manner as de Villiers. Albie Morkel is used to coming in at the death to try and hit his big sixes, but even the Powerplay was not over yet this time. His second ball against spin, Morkel went for a big six, and holed out off a googly from Pravin Tambe.Kohli must have surely been fuming inside, but the very next ball, he calmly swatted Tambe for four through extra cover. First ball of the next over, he stepped out and lifted Southee over mid-on. That was about as close as Royal Challengers were coming to a fightback. In Tambe’s next over, Kohli received a half-tracker and pulled it straight to midwicket.Mitchell Starc and Ravi Rampaul helped their side move past 58, before Tambe wrapped up the innings to end with 4 for 20, his best IPL figures. The RCB pair bowled their hearts out, but by the time Starc reduced Royals to 36 for 3, they were already more than half way to their target.

Rampant Ireland retain World T20 Qualifier title

Ireland successfully defended their World Twenty20 Qualifiers title with a comprehensive 68-run win over Afghanistan in the final in Abu Dhabi, thanks largely to blitzed fifties from Paul Stirling and Trent Johnston – in his final Twenty20 match – that propelled them to a mammoth 225.Ireland, who have been in excellent form throughout the tournament, winning six of their seven group matches before thumping UAE in the semi-finals, were rampant from the get go. Electing to bat, Ireland began strongly as Stirling pulled Shapoor Zadran for four off the fourth ball of the innings and upper-cut the next delivery for six over third man.Stirling received ample support at the other end from his captain William Porterfield, who also picked out the boundaries at regular intervals as the pair raced to 68 inside six overs. Ireland suffered their first casualty when Porterfield, having just hit Hamza Hotak through the covers for four, missed a cut and was bowled for a 14-ball 27.That didn’t slow Ireland down in the least though, as new batsman Kevin O’Brien pierced the offside with his first two deliveries for four, and lofted the third for six over the bowler’s head. O’Brien departed for 20, but his 12-ball cameo had already taken Ireland over the 100-run mark in 8.3 overs.Afghanistan would have hoped for a reprieve following the wicket, but Johnston, coming in at No. 4, continued the carnage, as he and Stirling slammed 64 off 32 deliveries. Stirling finally fell for 76 – caught by Mohammad Nabi off Hotak in the 15th over – having hit eight fours and four sixes, but Johnston added 44 more runs with Gary Wilson and John Mooney at a manic pace. Johnston was eventually bowled by Zadran for 62, but it was too little too late for Afghanistan, as Ireland had already amassed well over 200.Set a daunting 226 to win – a record, if they achieved it – Afghanistan began spiritedly, as Mohammad Shahzad took 14 runs of Max Sorensen’s first three balls. At the other end Nawroz Mangal hit 12 off Tim Murtagh’s first 4, as he and Shahzad added 36 in 3.2 overs before Mangal was bowled by George Dockrell – like Afghanistan, Ireland too resorted to spin early on – for 14.Afghanistan tried to maintain the high required-rate and did so for a while, but their progress was halted by wickets at regular intervals from Dockrell and Alex Cusack .Cusack claimed two wickets with the final two balls of the Powerplay to set Afghanistan’s chase back quite a bit. Gulbadin Naib top-scored with 43, but received little support from the rest of the middle order as Johnston made a telling contribution with the ball as well by picking up the wickets of Naib, Samiullah Shenwari and Najibullah Zadran in quick succession – he too was on a hat-trick in one point in his spell – to all but wrap up the game.Seamer Murtagh delivered the winning blow, yorking Shapoor Zadran to seal the title.Despite the crushing defeat, Afghanistan can take comfort in the fact that their spot in the World Twenty20 2014 is well secured, along with Ireland, Nepal, UAE, Hong Kong and Netherlands. Afghanistan have been drawn with hosts Bangladesh, Nepal and Hong Kong in Group A for the first round of next year’s showpiece event. Ireland are in Group B, with Zimbabwe, UAE and Netherlands.

Bonus-point relief for Kohli

Virat Kohli, in his second match as captain, smacked an 83-ball 102 to power India to a tall score against West Indies, but he said more than his innings, India earning a bonus point was more satisfying

Virat Kohli, in his second match as captain, smacked an 83-ball 102 to power India to a tall score against West Indies, but he said that earning a bonus point was more satisfying than his innings.India were in a difficult position in the tri-series before the start of the match because they had lost their first two games – the second against Sri Lanka being one of their heaviest defeats – and needed to win this match to keep their chances afloat. India’s much-vaunted batting line-up had struggled for fluency at Sabina Park, but at Queen’s Park Oval the openers responded with a 123-run opening stand to set an ideal platform. Kohli, despite limited support from other middle-order batsmen, ensured it wasn’t wasted.”We got a good start. It’s a bit of a tricky situation if you go in after a good start,” Kohli said. “You don’t know whether to play yourself in or go after the bowlers. To get a hundred in my second game as captain, I am pretty happy. I was getting good starts, but hitting that one shot straight to the fielder, so I was waiting for this big innings. But more than the hundred, I am happy we won with a bonus point.”Darren Sammy credited Kohli for lifting India’s score beyond 300, but said that West Indies’ bowlers could have bowled better. The fast bowlers were expensive and even Sunil Narine wasn’t able to control the flow of runs, giving away 35 in his five overs.”We have to give credit to Kohli and the Indians for the way they played. We did not bowl as well as we know we can,” Sammy said. “That is one area where we went wrong today. India played really well. They knew they had to come hard at us, to get a win and stay in the tournament, and they did just that.”Chasing 312, West Indies lost Chris Gayle early to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who struck again in his next over to dismiss Darren Bravo. A rain disruption added to West Indies’ woes as the target was readjusted to 274 off 39 overs, but none of the West Indian batsmen stayed long enough to put up a challenge.”The way Kohli played just goes to show what can happen when a set batsman stays in to the end of the innings,” Sammy said. “We had two very good innings in Jamaica when Chris [Gayle] got a hundred against Sri Lanka and [Johnson] Charles got 90 against India to win those two matches for us, but we did not get any real big partnerships going today.”West Indies are still placed at the top of the table with nine points and need to win their next match against Sri Lanka to confirm their entry into the final.”We are still very much in the tournament. Today we lost but there is need to panic,” Sammy said. “We are still at the top of the points table and we have all to play for when we face Sri Lanka on Sunday. We still believe we can win this tournament. We will regroup and look to bounce back when we meet Sri Lanka on Sunday and look to move into the final.”
