New Zealand allrounder Grant Elliott has been named as a replacement for Corey Anderson, who has sustained a fracture to his left thumb, for the ODI series against South Africa.Anderson was struck on his hand while bowling during practice. He will be in a cast for the next two weeks, thus ending his chances of making his ODI debut on this tour. Anderson played in all three T20s against South Africa last month, scoring 17 runs in two innings and failing to take a wicket.Elliott, who grew up in Johannesburg, has played five Tests, 37 ODIs and a single T20 for New Zealand but hasn’t featured in an international game since December 2010. He has scored four fifties and a century in his ODI career. He has played only once before against South Africa, in the 2009 Champions Trophy.New Zealand will play three ODIs against South Africa, between January 19 and 25.

Bairstow stars to put Yorkshire into final

Jonny Bairstow played another ebullient innings swept Yorkshire to a 36-run victory against Sussex in the first Friends Lift t20 semi-final

Jonny Bairstow was shunned by England for the first ODI against South Africa on the same ground 24 hours earlier and he made the decision look distinctly dubious as another ebullient innings swept Yorkshire to a 36-run victory against Sussex in the first semi-final on Friends Life t20 Finals Day.England had opted instead for Ravi Bopara, immediately brought back into the side after a leave of absence because of personal problems, but Bairstow reasserted his reputation as one of the most exciting young strokemakers in the country with 68 from 48 balls as Yorkshire secured a place in the Champions League in South Africa in October. Mike Yardy, Sussex’s defeated captain, called it the best innings against his side this season. Not until the departure of Scott Styris, though, did Yorkshire, relishing their first Finals Day after a decade of unfulfillment, dare to believe that victory was theirs. Styris equalled the third fastest t20 hundred in history, an unbeaten 100 from 37 balls, as Sussex overcame Gloucestershire in the quarter-finals and, 37 or not, it has given him a heightened reputation. Even Gordon Gecko, the corrupt financier played by his lookalike, the actor Michael Douglas, in Wall Street, never saw his stock rise as unexpectedly as this. When the offspinner, Azeem Rafiq, kept his nerve and Styris holed out at long off, the entire Yorkshire side ran to congratulate the fielder. Even Ryan Sidebottom, who needs to preserve energy these days, managed a determined 100-yard jog. Sussex still needed 91 from 41 balls and with Styris gone, and five wickets remaining, the game was up. It is hard to recall many occasions when a Yorkshire side has fielded with more intensity.Chris Nash with 80 not out from 58, manfully tried to hold Sussex together. His ramp shot operated efficiently throughout, particularly against Sidebottom, and when Sussex faltered – with Moin Ashraf’s control of the block-hole ball outstanding – it was primarily because he was starved of the strike.Only one another Sussex batsman made double figures as Yorkshire played with concerted aggression and concentration. Luke Wright, back in England’s World Twenty20 squad, had departed by the end of the Powerplay, Wright dragging on against Sidebottom and Matt Prior failing to bulldoze Bresnan over mid-on.”Another not out for Nashy on the telly,” Yorkshire’s fielders chortled as the pressure built on him, but if it was a good sledge it was an undeserved one. When he slogged desperately at a full toss, Sidebottom’s diving deflection ran out Will Beer at the non striker’s end. It summed up his lot.Yorkshire’s top order was suppressed by Styris, a T20 itinerant these days, who broke his journey back from New Zealand with two appearances for Kandurata Kites in the Sri Lanka premier League and who opened up with 3 for 23 in four overs to give Sussex the edge. He even included a maiden, only the fourth in ten years of t20 finals day.His longevity would not so long ago have been viewed as unlikely, his pace so sedate these days – around 65mph – that he was no faster than the left-arm spinner, Mike Yardy, who was bowling darts at the other end. But he was straight and accurate and that was enough to lead Yorkshire into early indiscretions.Andrew Gale tried to chip Styris down the ground as he targeted leg stump, but got no further than mid on. Phil Jaques was bowled, his frustration evident in a Jos Buttler-style paddle sweep. As for Joe Root, his method of transforming himself from a lightly-built and technically-correct championship opener into a t20 threat was to unveil a varied collection of sweeps, the last of which failed to connect with a Styris full toss as he fell lbw.Bairstow then took matter into his hands. If the first half of Yorkshire’s innings belonged to Sussex, the second half belonged to Bairstow; 61 runs came by midway, 111 thereafter. He whistled Styris over square leg for six, whipped Nash’s offspin over mid wicket for another six and in between batted with impressive range of stroke and placement. A considered recovery partnership with David Miller, who was equally forceful until he fell for 47 at long-off, flat-batting Nash, was worth 82 in 10 overs.”After a sticky start we needed someone to play well to get 150-plus,” said Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s captain. “But this guy is in the form of his life at the moment, playing well under pressure. The Champions League is where we want to be, but when you get to the final you don;t want to come away as losers.”Yorkshire were grateful that the England eventually released Tim Bresnan, on the grounds that he had done little more than loaf around during a rain-ruined ODI against South Africa on the same ground 24 hours earlier. But it should not be up for debate. Finals Day is the showpiece of the domestic calendar and release of England players should be automatic. It should be automatic, too, for semi-finals which are quite attractive enough on their own accord to be played as separate entities. If the fixture list does not allow this then change the fixture list.

Injured James Pattinson out of Australia A tour

The fast bowler James Pattinson will not be part of the Australia A tour of England due to an abdominal strain

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2012The fast bowler James Pattinson will not be part of the Australia A tour of England due to an abdominal strain. Pattinson suffered the problem during the final ODI against England in Manchester earlier this month and has not stayed on with the A side, which begins its tour with a three-day match against Derbyshire on Friday.Pattinson is instead expected to resume bowling next week with Victoria, having returned home to Melbourne following the ODI series. However, he is expected to be fit for the one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE next month, having been named in the squad for that tour after he suffered the injury. The Western Australia fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile is set to join the Australia A squad, which had already gained Alister McDermott after he was brought in to replace in the injured Pat Cummins, who suffered a side strain. The tour would have provided a valuable opportunity for Pattinson and Cummins to bowl with the red ball in English conditions ahead of their likely involvement in next year’s Ashes.Instead, the Australia A group will rely on Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Ben Cutting, Jackson Bird, McDermott and Coulter-Nile for their pace requirements. The spin contingent is made up of Nathan Lyon, Jon Holland and Steven Smith. The Australia A series includes four games against county sides and the England Lions over the next three weeks.

India must learn to get tail out – Dhoni

After India’s 122-run loss at the MCG, India’s third first-Test loss on their last four tours, MS Dhoni said it was the batting that let the side down

Sidharth Monga at the MCG29-Dec-2011After India’s 122-run loss at the MCG, India’s third first-Test loss on their last four tours, MS Dhoni said it was the batting that let the side down. The team, he said, also need to come up with ways to run through the opposition’s lower order.”We thought with a 230-odd runs [overnight] lead, if we could get them for 240 or 250, that’s a very gettable score,” Dhoni said. “But I felt 290-odd was also a score we should have achieved. The wicket was good, it was not like there was too much wear and tear on the wicket. I think the batting line-up flopped in both the innings.”First innings, we got off to a decent start. We had a kind of a partnership going, after that we needed to capitalise on it. We were not really able to do that, because of which we were close to 50 runs short. In the second innings, wickets kept falling at regular intervals, which meant getting close to 300-odd runs was more and more difficult. Just that we need to get consistent with our batting.”The Indian batsmen began this year in overcast Cape Town, facing dream spell after dream spell from Dale Steyn who was ably supported by Morne Morkel. Led by Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir, they fought the conditions and the bowling, and managed a draw. That, sadly, was the high point of their Test cricket this year. Since then they have played 16 innings away from home, and have crossed 300 only once. One of those innings was a declaration at 269 for 6, another a score of 94 for 3 in a chase. That leaves 13 innings when India haven’t crossed 300, which is a minimum requisite to compete in most Tests.MS Dhoni: “In games like these, both the innings together, if the amount of runs goes to 90 or 100 for the tail, it’s a big amount of runs to chase.”•AFPFor the England debacle the batsmen could be given some benefit of doubt because of the pressure a toothless bowling attack on them, but here India actually had an attack that matched Australia blow for blow, except for bowling the tail out, where you have to argue captaincy played a big part too. Dhoni agreed about the batsmen’s flaws, but chose to give credit to the Australian bowlers too.”There are a lot of things that could have happened [differently with the batting],” Dhoni said. “But at the same time you need to give credit to the opposition bowlers because of the line and lengths they bowled. A lot of the batsmen who got out, the delivery was close to the off stump. Some of them came in, some of them just held their line. They bowled really well and they pushed the batsmen to play most of the deliveries.”The batsmen had to guess if it [the ball] was coming in or going out. Consistently they bowled well. And session after session, they bowled in the same areas. At some point of time you may commit an error. Maybe that’s what happened in this game.”Dhoni credited the Indian bowling, too, which in turn meant the batsmen needed to clean up their act even more urgently. “The bowlers did their job in this Test,” he said. “We didn’t start off really well in the first innings, but in between we got quick wickets. And we were able to put pressure on the opposition. In the second, when it came to bowling, we started off really well. Overall the bowling department did the job. Just that we need to put runs on board.”However, they needed to find a way to run through the tail as well, he said. “It [Australia’s lower-order contribution] didn’t deflate us,” he said. “It’s something we need to keep an eye on. Even in the first innings their lower order put decent runs on the board. In games like these, both the innings together, if the amount of runs goes to 90 or 100 for the tail, it’s a big amount of runs to chase. We need to come up with ways to get the tailenders out.”The defeat at the MCG, and the England debacle, leaves India with a mixed year. “It was a good year for us as a team,” Dhoni said. “At the same time there were phases we didn’t do really well, the England series being one of the patches where we didn’t win a single game. The World Cup, being one of the most treasured things, gave us immense pleasure to win it, but we weren’t as consistent as were last year. That’s something that does happen in cricket. Overall it’s a good year, that’s what I would say. If we had performed better in England, it would have been a perfect year. It doesn’t always go that way.”

Scotland finish top, PNG and Namibia qualify

Afghanistan, Namibia and Papua New Guinea won their games on the final day of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Ireland, to book their place in next year’s tournament, which will be played in Queensland, Australia. Scotland, Nepal and Ireland, who finished at the top of the points table, had already qualified. These six teams will be joined by the ten Full Members at the World Cup.Kenya Under-19s’ Duncan Allan, who finished the tournament with 455 runs from nine games at 50.55, was named Man of the Tournament. Allan said he was disappointed not to have made it to the World Cup – Kenya, with only two wins, finished ninth on the points table. “It would have been great to be part of the tournament next year. But I learnt a lot this time playing this tournament and I believe am a better player for the experience.”Scotland Under-19s won the qualifying tournament, after crushing bottom-dwellers Vanuatu Under-19s by 130 runs at Lodge Road. It was Scotland’s eighth win out of nine games, putting them ahead of Nepal Under-19s by two points. Nepal also qualified, as did hosts Ireland, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan. Ross McLean’s half-century helped Scotland get to 222, and then Vanuatu crumbled to 92 all out. Offspinner Kyle Smith took 5 for 17 as none of Vanuatu’s batsmen offered any resistance. The pitch, Smith said after the match, aided his bowling. “The pitch was a bit two-paced. So, all I had to do, was to bowl in the right areas. I am glad the tournament went off well for us, as we had prepared well for it.”Papua New Guinea Under-19s continued their rise up the table and secured qualification by picking up their fourth win in five games, this time easily beating Ireland Under-19s at Woodvale Road.Seamer Norman Vanua was PNG’s star with the ball; he picked up two early wickets that started a top-order collapse for Ireland, and when the Ireland lower order was fighting to take their team to a defendable total, Vanua came back and removed the last two batsmen. The 38-run eighth-wicket stand between Adam Coughlan and Barry McCarthy that Vanua broke was the highest of Ireland’s innings, and they only managed 155. PNG reached the target quickly, but not without losing five wickets. A quickfire 30 from Vagi Oala got the chase off to a rollicking start but the run-rate slowed slightly as wickets fell. PNG were always comfortable though and got home in 29.1 overs.Wicketkeeper Dogodo Bau, who was at the crease at the end and had claimed five catches when PNG bowled, was the Man of the Match. “It feels good to be part of the squad that qualified [for the World Cup],” he said. “The pitch was good today, but had something in it for our fast bowlers. We have done well to get through.”Nepal Under-19s stayed in second spot in the points table with a convincing 99-run win against USA Under-19s at the Limavady Cricket Ground. No. 3 batsman Naresh Budayair’s 76 set up the base for Nepal, as they recovered well from 78 for 4. Budayair was ably assisted in the recovery by Pradeep Airee, who scored 57. Krishna Karki then blasted four sixes in his 45 off 17 balls to lift Nepal from 214 for 6 in the 47th over to 264 for 9. USA’s chase ran into early strife as Avinash Karn and Krishna Karki reduced them to 15 for 3 in no time. Steven Taylor hit a quick half-century, but USA kept losing steam thanks to Rahul Vishwakarma’s four-wicket haul, and they were bowled out for 165 in the 45th over.Man-of-the-Match Budayair who had top scored with 76 said once Nepal got Taylor, they were confident of winning. “I thought we had enough on the board. But while Steven Taylor was at the crease, we were a bit wary. Once he fell, we were certain of a win.”Afghanistan Under-19s routed Canada Under-19s by eight wickets in a one-sided encounter at New Strabane Park which secured their qualification in fifth place. No Canada batsman managed to score more than 13 as they were skittled out for 71 by an all-round bowling effort from Afghanistan. Sayed Shirzad, Yamin Ahmadzai and Abdul Naseri picked up two wickets each to leave their batsmen facing an easy chase. Javed Ahmadi and Hashmatullah Shaidi did the needful, racing home in 15 overs despite the loss of two cheap wickets.Ahmadi’s positive, unbeaten knock of 34 from 25 won him the Man-of-the-Match award. He said the win came courtesy his sides’ high quality fielding. “Today’s victory belonged to the fielders. They were just brilliant and ran two batsmen out. When I batted, it was all very simple, since we did not have much to chase.”Kenya Under-19s dismal run in the tournament continued as they lost to Namibia Under-19s by 109 runs at the Drummond Cricket Club. The foundation for Namibia’s total of 314 was laid by captain Stephen Baard’s 89 and Merwe Erasmus’ 51, while the final surge was provided by Gert Lotter’s 35 off 18 balls and Christopher Coombe’s 31 off 17 balls. Lotter and Coombe took 64 runs off the last five overs to ensure Namibia reached the highest total of the tournament so far. Kenya never really went for the total in reply. At the end of 20 overs, though they had only lost two wickets, their run-rate was 2.70, and though they batted out the 50 overs, and Joseph Ochieng got a half-century they ended up losing by a big margin.Man of the Match Stephen Baard said the pitch suited the batsmen. “I had to lead the way for the side. We had to win and win big. It was an easy paced track. The batsmen had it easy during the day. We knew if we posted a huge score, it will become easier to qualify.”
