Kevin Pietersen marked his much trumpeted return to cricket in England by turning on the Oxford students like a man on a mission as he scored his first hundred in any form of the game since the Old Trafford Ashes Test in August 2013.The largest crowd at the Parks for years were there to watch, perhaps even to flesh out dissertations on controversial figures of English sporting history. He was in blistering form against Oxford MCCU in The Parks, hitting 170 from 149 balls, with 24 fours and two sixes, one of which dented a car parked beside the pavilion, not thought to belong to the CB or a particularly critical adversary in the media. At least one faraway observer suggested on Twitter that this somehow proved that England would have won the World Cup if they had not dropped him, a conclusion that might not have stood up to critical scrutiny.A somewhat tougher test will come when he returns to Championship action against Glamorgan in Cardiff a week hence.Pietersen said: “I’m batting as well as I’ve ever batted in my career. It’s just a case of hopefully continuing that. No-one’s guaranteed runs, but if I play the way I played today, in the same manner, then I think that I probably will score some.”Pietersen has played exclusively Twenty20 cricket in various leagues around the world since being axed by England following the humiliating Ashes whitewash defeat last year. His last first-class match was in January 2014, when Australia sealed a 5-0 thrashing of England in Sydney, and his most recent appearance for Surrey before Sunday was in the LV= County Championship in June 2013.He has given up a deal with Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad – not his favourite Indian city – in order to come back to Surrey as he bids to add to his 104 Test caps with England. Bookmakers have slashed odds on that from around 25-1 to 2-1.Pietersen’s inclusion in Surrey’s line-up attracted several hundred spectators and a number of photographers’ long lenses. They did not have to wait for long.Surrey lost two quick wickets, bringing Pietersen to the middle in the 10th over, 38 minutes into the match. He began in circumspect fashion, reaching 47 not out at lunch before accelerating after the break to three figures. He was twice dropped – the first a difficult opportunity after he had already reached three figures – before eventually falling, caught by Jack McIver off the bowling of Abidine Sakande.Reminded of his most recent ton, he said: “Jeez, that long ago. It’s always nice to get three figures, but it’s the way I started my innings that I’m proud of.”Once I got in on that wicket, it definitely became a lot easier, but it was really tough at the start. That’s what I’m really proud of. My first 40, 50 runs, the way I ground it out, didn’t give any chances and I played in a pretty mature fashion in terms of the situation.”Pietersen was ably supported by Gary Wilson, who finished unbeaten on 119. Surrey put their hosts in for an hour, with the students from Oxford and Oxford Brookes Universities reaching 28 for 4 before bad light stopped play with them 392 runs behind.Chris Tremlett, another England Test player, took three wickets for three runs. Calls for his recall are so far less vociferous.

Taijul suffers injury scare

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was struck on his left wrist while batting in the nets on Monday evening at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. He was taken for an X-ray immediately after the injured area swelled up. According to team sources, however, Taijul is expected to train on Tuesday morning, and the scan is only deemed “precautionary”.Bangladesh are on their sixth day of training at home, and will leave for Brisbane on January 24 for another two-week training camp. Tamim Iqbal, who had a knee operation in late December, will join the team four days later after another appointment with Dr David Young, the orthopaedic specialist who operated on him, in Melbourne.

Mashrafe wants to break ODI losing streak

Bangladesh are famished for ODI success in 2014 and the new captain Mashrafe Mortaza hopes to use the momentum from the Test series to turn things around

Bangladesh are famished for ODI success in 2014 and the new captain Mashrafe Mortaza hopes to use the momentum from the Test series to turn things around. His side has been winless in 50-over cricket this year, losing 12 out of 13 with one game abandoned in June.”We played quite badly this year so I can’t say that we were in a so-so position,” Mashrafe said. “This is the time to comeback especially before the World Cup, so we are all focused. We won the Test series very well. This will definitely increase our confidence, especially for those who played well. This will also affect the whole team because we haven’t played any bad game in the series. The first match against Zimbabwe in Chittagong will kick off Mashrafe’s second stint as ODI captain after the first was ended by injury four years ago. Bangladesh have blanked Zimbabwe in a five-match series in 2006 and have won four out of the six such series played between the two sides. Their current form is also a positive, but Mashrafe was not keen on making predictions.”Captaincy is a challenge, but because the Test series has gone well that might help,” he said. “However, it doesn’t mean that we will win all the five games. We have to play well in the field, like we did in the Tests. Plans will be changed and now we have to execute them. If we can do that all then it will be good.”Firstly, people may have expected 3-0 [in Tests] but no one could say for sure that we would win this 3-0 until it actually happened. We played well that’s why 3-0 happened. Honestly speaking, I am not thinking of 5-0 because the first two matches are important. If we can do well here [in Chittagong], then we can go and confirm the series in Dhaka.”But before that we have to start well. We lost close games this year. I think it’s good to go with one game at a time. Once we win a game then everything will fall into place. So the first match is very important. I won’t talk about the 5-match series. One match is important and then the series.”Bangladesh’s composition might be adjusted to account for dew at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Mashrafe has first-hand knowledge of its effect from when he had stepped in as captain for two T20s against Sri Lanka in January and struggled with the amount of moisture on the outfield. Winter is approaching and temperatures are dropping every day as well, but Mashrafe doesn’t want to focus on external factors.”There is a lot of dew here, which might be a problem,” he said. “But then there are two teams who will have to adjust to the situation. We have to plan and go ahead. And I believe that we can do well. We don’t want to go into the negative side of it all. We have to believe that we have to bowl well in the dew.”We haven’t discussed [our comibnation] as yet. Nothing has been confirmed. Shakib, [Arafat] Sunny or Jubair [Hossain] are genuine spinners so they will face problems in the dew.”

Arafat five sets up Sussex win

Yasir Arafat claimed five wickets against one of his many former clubs as Sussex boosted their hopes of a Royal London One-Day Cup quarter-final place with a seven-wicket win over Somerset in a match reduced to 33 overs per side at Taunton.Arafat’s 5 for 36 from seven overs kept the hosts to a modest 193 for 8 after losing the toss, Colin Ingram top-scoring with 71, while Nick Compton hit 42 and James Hildreth 42 not out.Sussex were set a revised target of 189 under the Duckworth-Lewis system and eased home with 24 balls to spare thanks to an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 94 between Matt Machan, who made an unbeaten 47, and 46 not out from skipper Ed Joyce. After a delayed 11am start was prevented by further rain, play began at 11.40am with the game initially reduced to 44 overs per side. Somerset quickly plunged into trouble as Marcus Trescothick played on, trying to leave the first ball of the second over, bowled by Arafat. The next delivery saw Peter Trego, who had scored centuries in Somerset’s previous two games, caught behind down the leg side and by the time the rain returned after 5.1 overs the hosts were 10 for 2.The action resumed at 1.45pm and, with the sun breaking through, batting looked a good deal easier. Ingram and Compton exercised caution, the latter enjoying a slice of luck on 28 when playing a ball from Chris Liddle onto his off stump without the bail being removed. Ingram swept a six off Will Beer as the total approached the 100-mark, but one run short Compton was lbw to Liddle falling across his stumps, having looked in little trouble. It was 157 for 4 in the 27th over when Ingram ran himself out, calling for a second run to fine leg and beaten by Liddle’s throw to the wicketkeeper. The South African had faced 74 balls and hit seven fours and a six.Hildreth looked in good touch, but was unable to conjure up sufficient boundaries in his 43-ball knock and Somerset’s hopes of a big finish were dashed when Arafat removed Lewis Gregory for 18, Tim Groenewald and Craig Meschede in the final over.Sussex approached their revised target with gusto, Chris Nash pulling a six off Alfonso Thomas in only the fourth over, which ended with 33 already on the board. Luke Wright brought up the 50 in the sixth over by lifting Groenewald over midwicket for a maximum. The opening stand was worth 86 when Nash was run out for 30 off the final ball of the 10th over, setting off for a single dabbed to short third-man and being beaten by wicketkeeper Alex Barrow’s direct hit when sent back. The next over saw Wright, on 42, drive a return catch to left-arm spinner Leach, having faced 32 balls and hit six fours and a six. And Somerset were back in it when Craig Cachopa was caught by Gregory for 5, having skied Leach to mid-on.Leach’s figures would have been even better had Barrow not missed a simple stumping chance offered by Machan on 19, with the total 129 for 3. It was an error the home side could not afford and was symptomatic of a poor fielding display. Several catches went down as Machan and Joyce saw their side to a comfortable success, both pacing their innings to perfection.Afterwards Arafat, who was twice on a hat-trick, said: “After losing our first two games confidence is growing all the time and we now have a great chance of reaching the quarter-finals.”Somerset’s Leach added: `”No one should read too much into this result. The toss was important and it was always going to be difficult batting first, so we are determined not to let it affect the momentum we were building in the competition.”

Abhimanyu Mithun’s burst reduced Odisha to 66 for 7•AFPAbhimanyu Mithun ripped through the Odisha top order to leave them tottering at 66 for 6 before a superb rearguard led by Abhilash Mallick gave Odisha’s total some respectability. With six of the top eight batsmen being dismissed in single digits, Odisha were at 66 for 7 before Mallick began a recovery act with the lower order. Both Alok Sahoo and Basant Mohanty stuck around for over an hour each to support Mallick, who did most of the scoring in the two stands that yielded 106 runs. Mallick missed out on what would have been a maiden century, trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Abrar Kazi on 98. That brought in the debutant Suryakant Pradhan, who slammed three fours and three sixes in a 28-ball 34 that lifted Odisha beyond 200.

On a day of slow progress in Jamshedpur, half-centuries from Rameez Nemat and Saurabh Tiwary took Jharkhand to 194 for 5 against table-toppers Gujarat. This was Tiwary’s fifth 50-plus score in his previous six Ranji innings this season. Nemat and Tiwary came together after Jharkhand lost two wickets in the first hour, and they put on a patient 133 to steer the side to 168 for 2. With less than 14 overs to go till stumps, it was overwhelmingly Jharkhand’s day, but Gujarat hit back with three late strikes to even up the contest.

Mascarenhas hopeful in swansong of sorts

Ivo Tennant15-Aug-2013The biggest day in the English domestic cricket calendar, as Dimitri Mascarenhas puts it, will also be his swansong. Not necessarily in all aspects of the game, but most certainly in the format in which he will always be best remembered. Hampshire’s T20 captain retires at the end of the season, his future at the Ageas Bowl or elsewhere still to be resolved. He is in discussion with Rod Bransgrove, his chairman, about moving into coaching.Echoing 007, he did emphasise that he will never say never again. Mascarenhas might just be enticed elsewhere in the world where T20 is played, which these days is just about everywhere. For the time being, he is concentrating on beating “a very strong” Surrey side and is insistent that Hampshire will not be over reliant on Michael Carberry, the man of the moment, who has scored 496 runs in the competition this season.”I am glad we are playing in the second match at Edgbaston,” Mascarenhas said. “It gives us time to have a look at the pitch. We are not wholly dependent on Carberry, as James Vince has been excellent in two of our matches, but he is our best player and despite being over 30, is only going to get better. They will make for a good partnership for the next three years. If I was picking the England team, Carbs would definitely be in it.”Mascarenhas will be 36 in October, his stubble is greying and his body is creaking. As it is, he reckons the Hampshire physio has prolonged his career by at least one season and possibly more than that. “I am going to miss T20 hugely. I love everything about it – batting, bowling and captaining these great lads. That is why I shall not turn down an offer from IPL or New Zealand or Bangladesh, where I have played before, but I haven’t had one as yet.”Carberry, like Mascarenhas, spoke to Shane Warne when he watched Hampshire’s quarter-final victory over Lancashire last week, and they expect to meet up with him again at Edgbaston if he is commentating on Finals Day. Did their former captain impart any particular advice? “I can’t give away all my secrets,” Carberry said. “But he has had a massive influence on me, launching my career and giving me freedom. The fact that I’m improving is the most important thing. James Vince and I bat together nicely but an England call-up is not on my mind.”There have been other successes. Chris Wood, now very much regarded as a specialist ‘death bowler’ at the end of the innings, as he emphasised in Cardiff at Flt20 Finals Day last year, has only ever played in a winning side on Finals Day. “I get told in advance if I am going to bowl in the closing overs. I think if one shies away from anything in sport, one is going to be on the end of a defeat. But taking wickets at the start of an innings is just as important as not conceding runs at the end.”Trying to be a ‘death bowler’ when the opening batsmen are at the wicket would not work. I would not take wickets like that. I have picked up on the grapevine that the England selectors are looking for left arm bowlers. And my batting is improving – I want to play in all our Championship matches, not just half, and so I have to work on that.”
