Warne tells Lyon to stick with basics

Shane Warne has urged Nathan Lyon to simply focus on his stock ball rather than worrying about developing any new tricks as he aims to lock in his place as Australia’s long-term Test spinner. And Warne said a potentially serious shoulder injury to the Victoria left-arm spinner Jon Holland, who he expected to be picked for next year’s Ashes tour, could be a big blow as Australian cricket would need Holland as well as Lyon going forward.Warne, who was at the MCG for his first net session since being named as captain of the Melbourne Stars, said there should be no question that Australia would play a spinner in the first Test against South Africa in Brisbane. The Gabba was Warne’s most successful ground as a Test spinner – he took 68 wickets there at 20.30 – but the seam-friendly nature of Sheffield Shield pitches at the venue often makes four fast men a tempting option for selectors. However, Australia’s desire not to ask too much of its young fast men, combined with the fact that Lyon picked up seven wickets in his only Gabba Test, against New Zealand last year, means he will almost certainly play. Lyon is trying to regain his form in the Sheffield Shield after a disappointing Australia A tour of England this year and Warne believes Lyon, who conceded he had struggled with the avalanche of advice he had received over the past year, should go back to basics.”Graeme Swann does okay [with only] the offbreak and the straight one. I think Nathan Lyon has done very well too,” Warne said. “I think if he can just concentrate on his offbreak and the straight one I’m sure he’ll be fine.”For Nathan it’s just to keep doing well. As a spinner, all you want to do is bowl well. Don’t try too much stuff, just bowl well, and over a period of time you’ll have better games than not. Keep spinning his offbreak, the odd straight one, think about the game pretty well, contribute to the team and that’s it.”Warne believed Lyon and Holland could both play roles for Australia in future and he said he had very impressed with what he saw of Holland last year, when they were both on the Stars roster. Holland had been mentioned by the national selector John Inverarity as one of the two best spinners in the country last week, only to suffer a shoulder injury while fielding in club cricket at the weekend.Holland was due to find out his prognosis after seeing a specialist on Tuesday, but there were strong fears within the Victoria camp that he would need a second shoulder reconstruction, having had one in 2010. Warne said Holland, who usually concentrates on a stock finger-spinner with subtle variations in pace and flight, was the kind of bowler who could provide value to Australia’s Test team.”Jon Holland is a big loss,” Warne said. “I had him pencilled in about 12 or 18 months ago that him and Nathan Lyon would be on the Ashes next year and I was hopeful that both of them would play, especially for the balance of the team when you’ve got guys like Watson, Mitchell Marsh who can play as allrounders, you can play two spinners and one or two other quicks.”It’s a real big loss to lose Dutchy. He’s really improved. I loved working with him last year. We worked on the mindset of bowling, how to approach bowling, and I think he really developed. He had a good finish to last year and he’s been bowling really well. I really feel for Dutch and hopefully he’ll be back as quick as possible because I really think Australian cricket needs him.”

Leeds’ Mateusz Klich jokes about shocking miss on social media

Leeds United are top of the Championship, but they’ve been far from convincing at times this season. One man who seems to have dipped from last term is Mateusz Klich as he’s been unable to recreate the goalscoring form that saw him score 10 league goals last season.

Indeed, the Pole hasn’t had his shooting boots on this season, and he missed a gilt-edged chance to put Leeds 4-2 up on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder skied a chance from close range with less than ten minutes to go. Fortunately, the miss didn’t come back to haunt him as United held on to their lead, and the Pole even joked about his gaffe on social media after the match.

The Pole stated that the ball was on the M1, and while his miss was a shocker it would have been some effort to have reached the motorway as Elland Road is in fact next to the M621.

The 29-year-old jokingly asked anyone who found the ball to send it back to Thorp Arch, but with Klich missing by such a distance it’d be quite hard for anyone to find it.

In other news, Phil Hay has tipped one highly-rated U23 player to leave Leeds.

Why Newcastle United’s 4-2 FA Cup win over Blackburn should be a wake-up call for Mike Ashley

In the end, Newcastle United were able to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup following their entertaining 4-2 third-round replay away at Blackburn Rovers yesterday.

Victory for the Magpies, however, did not come without consequences with Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles both picking up injuries to add to Rafael Benitez’s woes.

The Breakdown

Benitez was already without the likes of Kenedy, Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame for the game, leaving the Spaniard in a delicate situation which could be about to get much worse.

Benitez, however, does not believe Clarke’s injury is too serious, though he remains unsure over the extent of Lascelles’ hamstring problem.

“When it is a hamstring you never know,” the Newcastle boss was quoted saying by Press Association Sport (via BT Sport). “With Shelvey and Dummett we have to wait, and Diame. We have to assess the three of them maybe on Wednesday or Thursday,” he added after explaining a bizarre nail injury Kenedy had picked up.

Ultimately, with all the injuries that are plaguing Newcastle, it really should kick Mike Ashley into making some signings this month.

The Tyneside club were already in desperate need of some reinforcements before the Blackburn game and, simply put, now need them more than ever.

Newcastle fans react to fresh takeover report

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the latest takeover rumour, as reports claim a £300m bid is on its way.

Newcastle have had an awful start to the season, but the latest reports could just put some light at the end of the tunnel.

According to The Daily Mail, a “seriously wealthy” American investment group are willing to meet Mike Ashley’s £300m asking price.

Ashley has lost the fans’ trust with his total reluctance to back the manager in the transfer market, so much so that most of them don’t even believe the takeover rumours.

The Magpies lie in the relegation zone ahead of this weekend’s round of matches, managing just two points from their first eight games.

The 3-2 defeat at Manchester United was particularly disappointing, as the Magpies seemed to crumble as soon as the second half substitutes started, a clear indicator of a lack of squad investment.

Newcastle fans react to £20m Almiron interest

Newcastle fans are all saying the same thing after the latest transfer news, that there’s no way Mike Ashley will sanction a mega-money move for Miguel Almiron.

According to Ed Aarons of The Guardian, both Newcastle and West Ham are targeting Atlanta United’s Almiron.

The 24 year-old, who has 13 Paraguay caps, is valued at around £20m according to Aarons’ report, which would of course break the Magpies’ transfer record, but the rumoured Benitez target is a surprise given they have shown no signs that they are willing to pay anywhere near that amount for one player this summer.

Both clubs are of course seeking a new number ten, and Almiron clearly has the traits to make it in the Premier League.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

The MLS star is absolutely rapid, can play either as a number ten or on the wing, and has grabbed eight goals and 11 assists in 21 league games this season for Atlanta United.

West Ham have already done plenty of brilliant business, and they are seeking a creative midfielder to be the final piece of the puzzle.

Newcastle on the other hand have done virtually no business at all, and Rafael Benitez is desperate for both a striker and a number ten.

Loads of fans are saying the same thing though, not expecting Ashley to splash the cash and smash the record. Plenty are loving the links too though, heaping praise on the electric Paraguayan.

Three reasons Leeds target Lasogga would inspire them to Premier League return

According to reports in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are targeting a move for out-of-favour Hamburg striker Pierre Michel-Lasogga.

The Yorkshire Evening Post says that the Yorkshire outfit have been trailing the 25-year-old throughout the summer transfer window after the centre-forward was deemed surplus to requirements by the Bundesliga side.

A move for a striker looks to be on the cards after Marcus Antonsson left to join Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan deal on Friday, while Souleymane Doukara didn’t feature in either of the club’s opening two match-day squads in the new campaign and could also depart.

This would leave manager Thomas Christiansen with just Chris Wood and Caleb Ekuban to pick from and that might not be enough depth if the Championship side are to win promotion this term, meaning he could step up his interest in Lasogga.

Here are three reasons the Leeds target would inspire them to secure a long-awaited Premier League return…

Pedigree

While he may be surplus to requirements at Hamburg, Lasogga has certainly shown enough throughout his career to suggest that he could be a huge hit in the Championship with Leeds.

Even though he struggled for game time last season – often finding himself coming off of the substitutes’ bench because of injury problems and playing second fiddle to Bobby Wood and Michael Gregoritsch – the 25-year-old is strong physically and decent in the air, but he has also shown what a good finisher he can be too.

He scored eight goals in 30 appearances for the Bundesliga strugglers in the 2015/16 campaign while he netted an even more impressive 13 times in just 20 German top flight matches in the 2013/14 season during a loan spell with Hamburg.

Competition

While Chris Wood certainly didn’t get complacent last season after scoring 27 Championship goals as Leeds narrowly missed out on finishing in the play-off positions, he didn’t have too much competition for the centre-forward position.

If Lasogga – who has proven himself in the Bundesliga caps and has 11 Germany caps to his name –came to the club then the New Zealand international would know that he would need to raise his game and perform at a consistent and decent level every week in order to keep his place in the side.

Thomas Christiansen could even be tempted to partner the duo together if he thought it would work or if the side needed a goal, and you certainly wouldn’t bet against one of the duo finding the net if that proved to be the case.

Statement of intent

With four goals in 11 appearances for Germany and a decent goalscoring record in the Bundesliga when he is a regular starter and fully fit, it would be hard to argue that if Leeds signed Lasogga it would be a huge statement of intent and make some of their Championship rivals sit up and take notice.

If the 25-year-old can show the form he did in the past that earned him a call-up for the current world champions, then he could help inspire the Yorkshire outfit win promotion.

While he would obviously be seen as a signing for the present, there would be little doubt that he would also be ready to make the step up to the Premier League with the club in a year’s time if they have the successful that season the club and fans are hoping for.

In Focus: Exploring options to replace Wenger makes perfect sense

As reported by The Daily Mirror, Arsenal have drawn up a four-man shortlist to replace Arsene Wenger should the legendary manager decide to leave the club this summer.

What’s the story?

Wenger is under fire this week after seeing Arsenal’s title challenge go off the rails last weekend at Stamford Bridge and should the furore result in him leaving the club, Arsenal will be ready for life after the Frenchman.

The Mirror reports that Gunners bosses don’t want Wenger to leave the club and are still hoping he signs a contract extension when his current deal runs out this summer.

With growing fears he could decide to walk away however, they’ve already put plans in motion to land his successor quickly.

Top of their list is said to be Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, but Max Allegri of Juventus, Roger Scmidt of Bayer Leverkusen and Leonardo Jardim are all also on their radar, according to the to the paper.

Is it time to go?

Wenger is undoubtedly an Arsenal legend, having won nine major honours since joining the club in 1996. However, over the last decade the club have hit a plateau and have failed to effectively challenge for the Premier League.

Year after year Arsenal fans find themselves frustrated as their challenge for trophies falls apart, for the most part. There has been the odd cup success but generally the feeling is that Arsenal should be achieving much more than they are.

There’s factors of course, a new stadium build and financial considerations among them, but perhaps a change is what is required to bring the Gunners back to where they want to be.

At the very least, exploring the reported shortlist makes perfect sense, especially if the decision to replace Wenger is taken out of Arsenal’s hands by the man himself. Getting caught short could lead to a turbulent season in his wake.

Five reasons Arsenal should sign this man to fix a long-term problem

Arsenal’s situation in defensive midfield has been a problem for Arsene Wenger for several years now, so we are fully expecting the manager to finally address the problems in this window.

Injuries have struck the Gunners badly once more and it seems as though they need reinforcements going into the second half of the season, as they face somewhat of a challenging fixture list with Champions League and Premier League clashes coming up in February.

As ever, several targets have been linked, but none are better than signing Grzegorz Krychowiak. The powerful central midfield man has proved himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe over the last few seasons and he must be destined for a big move in the next couple of years.

If Arsenal are to take this golden opportunity for the title, Wenger cannot afford to do his customary January dithering and he must make sure he is decisive to help maintain the quality of squad that can win on several fronts.

Here are FIVE reasons Krychowiak would be a great signing…

Coq up…

Coquelin’s form across the last 12 months has been a pleasant revelation for many Arsenal fans, but there are still elements of the fan base that don’t believe he is up to the standards of the club.

Thankfully, signing this Sevilla man could be a huge assistance to the breakthrough player of last season and would allow Wenger the option to play a more defensive system with the two of them covering.

Old Boys club

Flamini and Arteta are both likely to be on their respective bikes come the end of the season and this leaves a gaping hole in the Arsenal midfield ranks.

Both of the veterans might have largely been supporting roles over the last season or two, but their is no doubt that the squad will need extra depth to compensate for the loss of two wise heads, well, maybe not Flamini.

Golden Opportunity

As everyone seems to be saying, Arsenal will never have a better opportunity to win the title than this season.

Wenger must seize this window to make sure his side take full advantage of their chance, which has largely come about from the failings of the other big sides in the league, and make sure they reward Mesut Ozil’s wonderful form with a trophy.

Arsene’s time is up..

Seeing as no one seems to be getting any younger (funny that), Wenger is heading towards the end of his time in management and he really needs to seize his last few seasons.

If Arsenal are going to line-up a replacement, Arsene will want to leave them with the best possible squad and adding class like Krychowiak would be a big step towards that.

From a more personal stand point, Wenger will want to add extra numbers to help him achieve his first PL title in over a decade.

Ball Retention

Krychowiak, much like many Arsenal players, is a master at keeping hold of possession and would be a good platform to pass over playmaking responsibilities to the more gifted players in the squad.

With a pass completion of 84%, the big Pole will happily rotate possession to Ozil, Ramsey or Cazorla rather than risk losing the ball himself.

Messi rejected a cameo on CBSWon't share screen space with CarragherHenry came up with a hilarious reaction after the revealWHAT HAPPENED?

CBS Sports' show host, Kate Abdo, lifted the curtains on Carragher's spat with Messi and revealed that the Argentine declined to make a cameo appearance as he did not want to share screen space with the former Liverpool midfielder, even after he picked the 2022 World Cup winner over Cristiano Ronaldo and hailed him as the greatest of all time. Abdo then also reminded Carragher that Messi had earlier called him 'a donkey' after the pundit criticised the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner for choosing to join Paris Saint-Germain, whereas, Ronaldo chose to ignore him in the same show during a Champions League game while the Portuguese star was at Manchester United.

Henry kept silent but puffed up his cheeks hilariously while Abdo went after Carragher.

However, Carragher refused to back down and humorously alluded to Messi's unwillingness to appear alongside him as a "claim to fame." He then went on to question whether the crowd would prefer his analysis or the presence of the football icon on CBS. Although the crowd backed Carragher, Abdo did not believe them and suggested that the studio audience was lying.

Nonetheless, Messi's recent impact on Inter Miami and American football, notably leading his team to the US Open Cup finals and securing their first-ever Leagues Cup victory, would likely make CBS more interested in having Messi appear on their broadcast.
