What Levy has promised Conte at Spurs

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Paul Brown of The Daily Star has revealed what chairman Daniel Levy has personally ‘promised’ Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

The Lowdown: Conte takes charge…

The 52-year-old’s tenure has officially begun and it’s a new era which comes with plenty of promise and excitement.

Calciomercato.it recently claimed that the former Chelsea boss has demanded a €280 million (£239.6m) transfer war chest as he eyes a plethora of Serie A stars and a major Tottenham rebuild.

Meanwhile, The Sun believe Conte will be given a big budget to play with, though not quite as extravagant, with Levy apparently set to grant him a £150m budget to bring in his desired talent.

Now, backing somewhat backing these claims, Brown has shared what he believes to GMS.

The Latest: Brown makes Levy claim…

Speaking to the outlet, Brown has now shared what Levy has personally ‘promised’ Conte at Spurs and it’s quite an intriguing claim which could entice some Spurs supporters.

“He has been promised a fairly big whack, and a good go at things.” said the journalist.

The Verdict: Promising…

If Conte does indeed get the backing required to make Tottenham a force again, perhaps akin to the latter stage of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, they could have all the ingredients to become a European powerhouse once again.

Since reaching the Champions League final in 2019, the club have seen Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo sacked whilst also delaying the rebuild process of a squad in need of a big overhaul.

Pochettino himself candidly admitted that his side needed a ‘painful rebuild’ long before he was shown the door and Conte’s arrival could finally mark the beginning of the process.

He will need help from managing director Fabio Paratici as the Italian duo seek to turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.

Liverpool struck gold over Mo Salah deal

Liverpool’s rise from mid-table obscurity in the early and mid 2010s to becoming an English and European heavyweight once again has been down to several factors, but arguably none have been more important than the outstanding recruitment.

The Reds finished eighth in the topflight in 2015/16, which meant they had finished sixth or lower in six of the previous seven seasons, capping one of the worst eras in the club’s recent history.

Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in October 2015 was a pivotal part of Liverpool’s transformation in the subsequent years, but the appointment of Michael Edwards as director of football just 11 months later was also fundamental in their development.

Under Edwards, the Anfield outfit have brought in the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Fabinho, but there’s arguably one player who has catapulted them back to their former glory more than any other.

In July 2017, Liverpool splashed out £34m to bring flying winger Mohamed Salah to Merseyside from Italian outfit AS Roma.

The Eygpt international has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s most prolific goalscorers in world football ever since. In 209 appearances for Klopp’s charges, Salah has bagged an incredible 130 goals, providing a further 49 assists for his teammates.

His heroics have helped fire the 19-time English champions to their maiden Premier League title, a Champions League crown, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup during his time at Anfield.

Salah’s impressive exploits over the last four years have earned praise from several impressed onlookers, including his current boss.

“He is an outstanding signing, but for sure the way he developed, the way he treats himself, the game preparation, the training preparation, training attitude and all these kind of things, that’s exceptional,” gushed Klopp last season. “That’s a real role model, and he deserves all that, absolutely.”

The African star’s recent success has seen his market value skyrocket to £90m, highlighting just how much of an exceptional job Edwards did in securing Salah’s signature.

With only two years left on his current contract, it remains to be seen if the 29-year-old commits his future to the club, but either way, Edwards certainly struck gold by bringing him back to English football following his rather tepid stint at Chelsea.

Delhi and Mumbai in talks over Nehra-Dhawan transfer

The Delhi Daredevils and the Mumbai Indians have completed the first of five stages of the first-ever IPL transfer. Officials from both teams have confirmed that there has been an expression of interest over a swap between Mumbai fast bowler Ashish Nehra and Delhi batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The IPL transfer window opened on December 22 and Cricinfo had reported that Delhi were “looking specifically” for an Indian fast bowler. “We are pursuing the matter but it’s a long process,” Delhi’s chief operating officer Amrit Mathur told Cricinfo. The ‘expression of interest’ was only the first step of the process. The two franchises now have to reach a transfer agreement after which the players have to sign new contracts. The IPL has to then approve and register the change before the financial details of the deal are hammered out.Nehra played 14 matches for Mumbai during the inaugural season of the IPL and took 12 wickets at an average of 29 and economy-rate of 7.76. Dhawan scored 340 runs in 14 games for Delhi at a strike-rate of 115 with four fifties.

Sarwan and Ramdin clinch thriller

Denesh Ramdin and Ramnaresh Sarwan kept their cool in a tense finish to hand West Indies a 1-0 series lead after a rain-hit game in Christchurch. New Zealand were favourites when the West Indies needed forty off the last four overs, but Ramdin knocked off 21 runs off his next ten balls to put the visitors on course for a win in the match shortened to 28 overs a side. The equation had boiled down to four runs off the last over, after offspinner Jeetan Patel leaked 14 off the penultimate one. Tim Southee, who had sent down an outstanding final over in the tied Twenty20 game in Auckland, was again given the responsibility of bowling the final six deliveries. He gave away only two of the first three balls, but a couple of scampered singles finally broke New Zealand hearts. While it was Ramdin who applied the final touches, it was Sarwan who kept West Indies in the game, anchoring the innings with a calm half-century. Captain Chris Gayle had biffed a 31-ball 36, but two deliveries after launching Daniel Vettori over midwicket for six, he was bowled by a quicker one, leaving Sarwan to shepherd the chase. The wickets kept tumbling at the other end but Sarwan refused to panic. He collected the singles, punished the loose balls, and didn’t buckle under the pressure exerted by a tight spell of bowling from Vettori and Jacob Oram. New Zealand had seemed in control for much of the chase until the final onslaught from Sarwan and Ramdin.West Indies may be pleased with the win but one cause for concern was that there was little contribution from the younger batsmen in the side. In the absence of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who missed the game with a hand injury, the team look too reliant on their two senior batsmen, Gayle and Sarwan.By contrast, New Zealand posted a competitive 152 despite the failure of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor, with four batsmen reaching 25. After opting to field, the visitors got the dangerous McCullum early before rain came down in the seventh over just as Jesse Ryder was beginning to cut loose. Play was held up for four hours.Ryder and Jamie How kept the runs flowing on resumption before Ryder holed out to deep cover off Nikita Miller in the 12th over.New Zealand struggled to regain momentum after that dismissal; they were unable to score more than five off any of the next ten overs. The pressure created by Miller and Jerome Taylor led to the dismissal of several New Zealand batsmen and the hosts slid to 97 for 5 in 22 overs.Oram pulled them out of the rut, taking 17 off a Gayle over, and Grant Elliott’s big-hitting towards the end boosted New Zealand beyond 150. However, with Elliott not having bowled in both matches of the series, the hosts must work out whether they need a specialist batsman at No. 7.

Hodgson secures Yorkshire move

Yorkshire have signed 22-year-old allrounder Lee Hodgson from Surrey on a two-year deal

Cricinfo staff05-Nov-2008Yorkshire have signed 22-year-old allrounder Lee Hodgson from Surrey on a two-year deal.Hodgson made his first-class debut for Surrey in the final game of the 2008 season, against Nottinghamshire, as their relegation was confirmed. However, he impressed while making 63 and Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, had already seen promising signs.”Lee is someone who impressed us when he played for Surrey’s second team at York last year,” Moxon told the . “He is an allrounder who bowls at a decent pace, and has the ability to score runs. He became available at the end of the season and we regard him as a very good prospect and an investment for the future.”Hodgson, who was born in Middlesbrough, is delighted to be moving north. “It’s my home county, and it was my dream as a young lad to play for this club,” he said. “I popped in to Headingley yesterday to undergo a medical and want to move down as soon as I can, as I can’t wait to get started.”

Expansion plans for South Africa's franchises

Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Franchise Review Committee has recommended that the board increases the number of franchises from six to eight with effect from the start of the 2009-10 season. The two new teams would be Border and Griqualand West, and they would be created by splitting the existing Eagles and Warriors sides. The committee, which was reviewing the first four years of the new system, recommended it continue for another eight seasons and that there should be no more fundamental changes to the way it operates. The two new franchises would only come into being if they fulfilled some conditions. Border would need to show that had sufficient sponsorship and would have to prove it covered the area starting immediately east of the Kei River and must include the area formerly known as Transkei. Griqualand West would also have to provide the financial guarantees and show it covered the Northern Cape Province. This expansion would also create the new franchises of Eastern Province who would cover the area starting from immediately west of the Kei, including the South Western Districts, and Free State, who would cover the whole of the Province of Free State but would also be expected to focus on the development of black African cricket especially in the Gold Fields, Botshabelo and Rocklands areas. The other franchises of Titans (Northerns and Easterns), Dolphins (KwaZulu-Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands), Lions (Gauteng and North West) and Cobras (Western Province and Boland) will remain unchanged. The moves still have to be approved by the CSA executive.

There's a lot of resilience in this team – Kumble

Anil Kumble is a man of few words when it comes to addressing the media before, during and after a match but his crisp verdict that India needed to win in Galle at any cost was the most forthright he’s been this series. The last time India trailed a three-match series 0-1 was against Sri Lanka in 2001-02 and this Test could prove to be the most important in recent history, given that a loss here could seriously throw up composition concerns going forward into a busy season.”One down is one down, whether you’re in Australia or Sri Lanka, so it’s a matter of regrouping,” said Kumble. “We’ve done that and spent quality time discussing issues on and off the field, seeing how we can cope and come back. We’ve done that in the past with the same set of players and there is definitely a lot of experience and resilience in this team.”We will fall back on that resilience and I’m sure we will be able to put up a better show and get the right result here. We need to win this Test match. That’s the approach we are taking.”India clearly underperformed at the SSC but before questions started to fly around about who was at fault, Kumble pointed out it was a collective failure. “If you look at the team, overall we didn’t play to our potential,” he said. “It is wrong to point fingers at one batsman or one player. Whatever confidence I can give as a captain and team member, I’ve done that. It is not just the batting line-up. It’s all the members of this team. We are all disappointed at what happened in the last game and we’re looking forward to this challenge.”Perhaps aware that the only sides to beat Sri Lanka in Galle did so because of massive totals, Kumble stressed on batting well. “We will definitely approach this Test in a very positive way. The series is still alive and we’d like to go out and get as many runs as possible. We need a good score and have quality spinners as well to ensure we come into the game,” he said. “It is a good surface for the fast bowlers as well. There will be a bit of swing because of the conditions here. But I’m sure the spinners will definitely come into play.”Coming to Sri Lanka and winning was never going to be easy, said Kumble, but the signs shown in the past four days led him to believe they were hungry to prove they could win. He also said he had no plans to change the batting order, as he had complete faith in the names on the team sheet.India’s combination for this Test will remain “more or less the same as before” and nothing in India’s practice session suggested a change either. The mood was upbeat, with Gary Kirsten, the coach, sharing laughs with India’s batsmen as he handed out catching practice. Venkatesh Prasad was stoic as he monitored the bowlers but there was nothing out of the ordinary at that end of the ground. Zaheer Khan’s departure from practice early was not a matter of concern, said Kumble, as it was team policy to allow a player to leave once he felt satisfied. After losing the toss in Colombo, how crucial would it be here in Galle? “Toss and weather is not something we like to concentrate on,” Kumble said. “Whether we bat or bowl first we need to do a good job – bat well, land the ball in the right areas, take our catches. In the subcontinent the toss plays a crucial role but we can’t worry about it too much.”Last December, when England played Sri Lanka in Galle’s comeback Test, Kevin Pietersen was flipping through the channels one evening when he came upon highlights of The Oval Test in 1998 when Muttiah Muralitharan famously wrecked England’s batting line-up. On the eve of the Test, Pietersen noted how much England’s approach to Murali had improved since then. After being bowled out for 81 in their first innings, England creditably rallied to 251 before rain forced a draw. England’s batsmen allowed Murali only four wickets in that Test, and so Pietersen’s observations were correct in a way.India will hope that their batsmen have improved since they last played Sri Lanka in Galle in 2001 – and that will be a true test of the resilience Kumble speaks of.
