Is this Southampton’s gift to the rest of the Premier League?

Football is life in microcosm. An amplified, magnified, footballing version of life, it is the soap opera that keeps on churning.

We have plots and subplots, side stories and other-side stories. We have pantomime villains, rags to riches stories… and we have Jose Mourinho.

And at the moment, the good Samaritan figure is surely Southampton.

Saintly by name and saintly by nature, they’ve been in shocking form over the last few weeks. It’s almost as if Ronald Koeman and his men, standing pasty-faced and trembling in the gaze of the Europa League’s Medusa stare, have turned to stone.

They’ve won only once in their last six games, and their attempt to avoid supping from the poisoned chalice of Thursday nights on ITV 4 has been of enormous help to some of the teams at the bottom of the table. The scavengers down there, feeding from scraps and the odd hard-fought point, have gleefully feasted on the Saints’ poor form.

Hull and Burnley couldn’t manage to help themselves, though. Burnley have gone and Hull don’t look to be too far behind them, and that probably shows what a gift Southampton have given to the others. In successive games, Sunderland and Leicester have been given Premier League lifelines by a Southampton side who could still claw their way into Europe for the first time since 2003. But at the moment, they look like a team caught standing in the doorway of history with their pants down.

Next up, it’s Aston Villa’s turn to humble the formerly high-flying Saints. Villa now know that winning their game at St Mary’s this weekend will see them safe with a match to spare – and they could then focus squarely on an FA Cup final.

What was an awful season for Villa could very easily turn into their best one in years. By contrast, a great season for Southampton could turn into a poor one – lose to Villa and they’d have to go to Manchester City on the last day and look for a redeeming result there.

That’s overstatement, of course. No matter what happens it’s not a poor season for Southampton: they’ve confounded expectations in a big way. But it would be a disappointing end to a season of high hopes. With Swansea breathing down their necks, a Europa League spot – even if 7th place ensures one – does not look certain.

From a Southampton point of view, the only glowing bright spot from these last six games is that Tottenham have done almost as terribly. Spurs have won only once in their last six too, but they did manage an extra point out of those games.

All of this leaves Tottenham only a point ahead of Southampton but with a vastly inferior goal difference. Swansea have capitalised on this to find themselves only a point further back.

And so the soap opera keeps churning. Both Saints and Swansea have a game against Manchester City in their final two. Both Tottenham and Southampton have tricky games against relegation-threatened teams – Hull and Villa – and Swansea and Spurs both have games against mid-table teams with little to play for – Palace and Everton.

But with the form of the three teams as erratic as it is, it’s hard to see any of those games as foregone conclusions. There’s a lot left to play for, but Spurs and Southampton really don’t look like they want it. Terrified of playing in the Europa League next season, perhaps. I don’t blame them.

The Saints and the Spurs are stumbling over the line, and the Swans are gliding up on the rails. It’s going to be an interesting finish to the Europa League chase.

Or maybe that should be ‘the Europa League evasion’. The soap opera continues.

The time is right for Man United to make this transfer decision

From the moment dashes of wisdom white began to emerge upon the peripheries of Robin van Persie’s hairline – most likely due to the stress caused by David Moyes’ nightmare 10 months at Old Trafford – it always felt like the beginning of the end for the Manchester United striker.

Of course, not all of us are lucky enough to reach our 30s without succumbing to inevitable signs of age and many would argue the Netherlands international should feel fortunate he’s cursed by grey hair and not the considerably less envious baldness of strike partner Wayne Rooney.

Yet, those grey streaks, sharply juxtaposing the jet-black shade of his Arsenal years, symbolise so perfectly how RVP had reached the end of his footballing peak and entered into the decline. Next month he’ll turn 32 and amid links with a move to Fenerbahce, Oranje’s all-time leading goal scorer has reached the last major crossroads of his career.

Verging upon the realms of veterancy, for both Manchester United and RVP himself, now is the right time to part company.

Scoring goals has never been Van Persie’s problem; even over the last two seasons – campaigns disrupted by unprecedented change at Old Trafford and relentless injury problems – he’s managed to hit double figures in the Premier League, bringing his United total to 57 goals in 105 appearances.

The older he’s got, however, the more limited the Dutchman’s game has become. At Arsenal, he started off as a winger/forward, with the pace and trickery to play out wide. During his first season at Manchester United, the 6 foot 2 striker described himself as a 9.5 – combining the roles of a centre-forward and a supporting No.9. But last season, RVP appeared only truly useful in a single capacity; hitting the onion bag on a one-in-three-game basis.

If you’re going to impact games in just one way, it may as well be scoring goals, especially if you’re doing it with as much style and technical mastery as the United forward. But a lack of penetration going forward plagued the Red Devils last season and the former Gunners man, in addition to loan flop Radamel Falcao, was amongst the biggest culprits. He lacks the pace to stretch defences, the strength to hold them off or the power to burst through them – which renders you pretty useless in the modern age of one-up-front formations.

Van Persie has always been one for perfection – which I say as an eyewitness of his legendary volley against my beloved Charlton many moons ago – but there became a watershed moment when every delivery had to be pin-point for the striker to make any remote use of it. Although that was never an issue during his Golden Boot winning season under Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s more turbulent form under Moyes and Louis van Gaal made the striker’s dependency on world-class service from midfield disturbingly noticeable. When it’s not provided – and consequentially, when RVP doesn’t score – the Red Devils might as well be playing with ten men.

There aren’t too many world class deliverers at Fenerbahce. But at the very least, Van Persie will be spearheading a side prepared to accept his imperfections, his limits and of course, his never-ending injury problems – providing its offset by a strong tally of goals.

That too, is a significant factor in United apparently deciding to let RVP go. It’s become harder and harder to justify the striker’s salary, believed to be within the region of £12million per year, if he’s sidelined for significant portions of every season, as he has been for the last two. Now into the final twelve months of his Old Trafford contract, it seems unlikely the forward and his club would be able to reach a consensus on future earnings without resorting to an extension submerged in pay-as-you-play clauses. When even a close friend like Van Gaal isn’t interested in entertaining negotiations, the striker must know he no longer represents good value for money.

Not that this spells the end of RVP. The Turkish league is an improving one with a recurring knack for attracting ageing stars. Didier Drogba enjoyed some enchanting Champions League moments during his 18 months with Galatasaray, countryman Wesley Snjeider – also of Gala – is the flagship talent of the division and Van Persie will be well acquainted with Fenerbahce’s most recent acquisition, former United man Nani. In a top flight not so enriched with football’s best athletes, the Dutchman’s technical quality could serve him well for another three or four years.

But most important for the striker is next summer’s European Championship; ensuring his starting status is maintained for what will likely be his last hurrah on the world stage. In theory, an easier task in the Fenerbahce starting XI than on the Old Trafford bench. Whilst it’ll be a shame to no longer see him ripple nets in the Premier League, a final act of world-class netting prowess at France 2016 seems well worth the year-long wait.

Pundit Carragher takes aim at Man United boss

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United would win the Premier League title this season if Pep Guardiola was in charge.

Guardiola’s Manchester City team have a 15-point lead over second-placed Man United in the Premier League table after a record-breaking 2017-18 campaign to date.

Mourinho recently said that he did not have the spending power of Guardiola, but Carragher has rejected the notion that Man United’s squad is not strong enough to win the title.

Indeed, the former Liverpool captain has insisted that Guardiola would be able to win the title with the red half of Manchester, and has branded Mourinho a broken record as the Portuguese continues to make excuses for his team’s issues.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph:

“If Pep Guardiola was in charge of the United squad I believe they would win the title.

“Rewind to the start of this season and assess the head-to-head qualities of the United and City squads. Player-for-player, which would you argue was superior?

“This shows the biggest difference between City and United this season is nothing to do with money. Guardiola is breaking records. Mourinho is starting to sound like a broken one.”

Man United have drawn their last two in the Premier League against Leicester City and Burnley, but will be confident of returning to winning ways at home to Southampton in Saturday’s late kickoff.

Man City, meanwhile, will attempt to win their 19th straight Premier League match when they travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

In Focus: Aston Villa move for Ulloa could depend on Leicester’s January dealings

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are unlikely to push through a January deal for Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Daily Mail says that Villa have asked about Ulloa’s availability as they look to find a replacement for Jonathan Kodjia after his latest ankle injury, and competition for the likes of Keinan Davis and Scott Hogan.

However, the Daily Mail says that even though Steve Bruce’s men and Championship rivals Sheffield United are keen on the 31-year-old, who is unlikely to be allowed to leave by Foxes manager Claude Puel because of the cover he provides.

The report says that even though the Argentine centre-forward has featured from the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks, he is eager to get more game time.

How has Ulloa done this season?

The striker may have been hopeful of more first-team minutes this term after signing a new two-year deal with the club in August, but it hasn’t proven to be the case.

His late substitute appearance in the 3-2 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park earlier this month was his first Premier League outing of the campaign, while he has also come on against Southampton and Crystal Palace since then.

Aside from in the top flight, the 31-year-old has played twice in the EFL Cup, providing one assist in the 4-1 win against Sheffield United in August.

How much of a blow is it if Villa miss out on Ulloa?

It is quite a big one, really.

Bruce looks to need a tall and strong centre-forward to provide competition for Keinan Davis and be able to play the lone role up top well, and Ulloa comes with the added bonus that he has plenty of Championship experience as well.

The Argentine striker netted 23 goals in 50 games at that level for Brighton and Hove Albion previously, and he certainly would have had a big point to prove in the second-half of the campaign.

Is a deal definitely dead?

It may well depend on Leicester’s January activity.

If they fail to sell Islam Slimani or fail to bring in a new striker then Ulloa may well go – whether it be on loan or a permanent deal – but if those two things do happen the 31-year-old is likely to stay until the end of the season as the Foxes look to push for Europe.

In Focus: Manchester United’s Sanchez interest will raise eyebrows, but deal could work

Manchester United have entered the race for Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, according to Sky Italy.

What’s the story?

For months now it has seemed somewhat inevitable that the Chile international would end up at Manchester City.

However, Pep Guardiola’s neighbours have reportedly thrown a spanner into the works by swooping for their top target.

According to Sky Italy, the Red Devils are interested in signing the 29-year-old forward and are willing to offer Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the deal.

The Armenian has struggled for game time this season under Jose Mourinho having made just 11 Premier League starts so far.

The report adds that United are willing to pay Arsenal a higher fee than City are proposing to sign Sanchez in this window.

Could this shock deal happen?

From United’s point of view, securing Sanchez’s signature would be a major coup given that nobody would have seen this coming.

Mourinho’s men have failed to set the world alight this season with their performances on the pitch, but having the former Barcelona star in their ranks would bring an injection of attacking quality.

Sanchez would also be expected to contribute with goals, which means that pressure on Romelu Lukaku’s shoulders would be alleviated.

The deal would benefit Arsenal as well given that they will get a decent player in return, whereas with City, there have not been any suggestions in recent weeks that a player-plus-cash arrangement is on offer.

What would be even sweeter for United fans would be the fact that they have denied their local rivals a chance to strengthen.

Guardiola’s men are running away with the title, but it would be a bitter blow if they were to lose out on signing Sanchez, particularly if they are beaten by United in the race.

In Focus: Fred can be missing piece of midfield puzzle at Man United

As reported by The Daily Star, both Manchester United and Manchester City are locked in a battle for Shakthar Donetsk midfielder Fred in the final days of the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The paper say that while both Arsenal and Tottenham have shown interest in recent weeks, the race to sign the Brazilian is set to come down to the two Manchester clubs over the next few days.

According to the report, the Ukrainian side value the 24-year-old at £50m, meaning he would represent a significant outlay for both clubs.

After United beat their rivals to Alexis Sanchez, it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top for this star, with both managers said to be hugely interested in adding him to their squads.

What can he offer United?

Paul Pogba has been effective this season but arguably doesn’t have the midfield freedom to truly focus on supporting the Manchester United attack first and foremost.

Bringing in a player like Fred would certainly go a long way to solving that problem, his style of play focusing on winning back the ball and protecting his side’s defensive line.

He has plenty of experience under his belt despite being just 24 years of age and was integral to the Ukrainian’s progress to the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League this season.

He could be a perfect accompaniment to the French international and forge a successful career at Old Trafford, especially with ageing defensive minded midfielders potentially on their way out of the club.

HYS: Are you happy with West Ham’s January transfer window, Irons fans?

The January transfer window was a chance for David Moyes to truly imprint his ideas on a West Ham squad he inherited from Slaven Bilic and there was certainly some movement at the London Stadium last month.

Indeed, the Hammers parted with two goalscorers in Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho, bringing in £29.52million, while allowing Reece Oxford and Reece Burke to leave on loan for Borussia Monchengladbach and Bolton respectively.

At the same time, highly-rated midfielder Joao Mario arrived from Inter Milan on loan and Deadline Day saw the Irons complete a late swoop for Preston North End front-man Jordan Hugill, after netting eight times during his last 27 Championship appearances.

Overall, that saw the Hammers take in a total net profit of £19.26million last month according to Transfermarkt. But was that an example of good business from the east Londoners or a missed opportunity to further spend as they look to stave off relegation?

Liverpool fans react negatively to Klopp comments

Jurgen Klopp recently claimed that the depth in his current Liverpool squad was the best that he has had available during his managerial career.

The Reds decided against replacing Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho during the January transfer window, but they did spend £75m on Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool currently sit third in the Premier League table – two points off second-placed Manchester United ahead of this weekend’s home match against West Ham United.

The Merseyside club, meanwhile, have more than one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League following their 5-0 victory at Porto in the first leg of their last-16 European tie.

Klopp has a lot of reasons to be feeling positive at the moment, but his comments about squad depth have not gone down too well with the club’s supporters.

Indeed, the Liverpool fans are not convinced that their current squad is capable of challenging for major honours.

A selection of the Twitter reaction to Klopp’s comments can be seen below:

Benteke shows he can be Crystal Palace’s big-game player at the perfect time

It’s not been an easy season for Christian Benteke. Partially disrupted by injury and undoubtedly influenced by Crystal Palace’s need to avoid relegation, the former Liverpool striker has netted just twice in the Premier League this term, bumping him down to a miserly fifth in the Eagles’ top flight scoring charts for 2017/18.

Benteke couldn’t bring his drought to an end against Manchester United last night as Roy Hodgson’s side missed out on invaluable points in the relegation scrap through Nemanja Matic’s stunning stoppage time winner, but the Belgium international’s Man of the Match performance did suggest he’s coming to form at just the right time for Palace, and that his mindset is in the right place for a tough run of fixtures against top six sides.

That couldn’t always be said about Benteke during his time at Selhurst Park, when his sheer size and style of play as a target man hasn’t always been backed up by his enthusiasm in leading the line, often failing to chase lost causes and switching off in defensive situations.

But perhaps because he was facing such a high calibre of opponent, Benteke brought his a-game last night and was a critical influence at both ends of the pitch; in addition to assisting Andros Townsend for the opening goal, the 27-year-old won twelve aerial duels – many inside his own box – made three tackles and five clearances. Those key defensive contributions were epitomised in the 74th minute by a goal line clearance to keep the scores at 2-1.

[ad_pod ]

Of course, Palace just couldn’t hold on and Benteke couldn’t find his third goal of the season, but it’s important for the Eagles and their star striker to see the positives from last night’s performance.

The good news for Hodgson ahead of clashes with Chelsea and Liverpool is that Benteke has shown can be a big-game player for Palace and he’s prepared to put in selfless performances.

In the relegation zone with just nine games left of the season, there are no free hits for the south Londoners anymore and they’ll need to get something from those games – Benteke looks ready to play a huge part.
